This episode feels so bittersweet, because it’s going to be my last one for a while. This has been an extremely hard decision for me, because I’ve built an incredible community since starting my podcast. Whether this is the first episode you’ve tuned into, or you’ve been with me from the beginning, I just want to let you know how truly, TRULY grateful I am for you, and how near and dear you are to my heart! I don’t think this will be goodbye forever in this space, but more of a goodbye for now.
While a podcast pause is happening, we’re also talking about the elephant in the room today. I’m not necessarily making fun of myself here (but...I kind of am too). I recently had someone comment on my weight - specifically, telling me I’ve gained weight. Even though this was really difficult to hear, it’s also true, because I HAVE gained weight. Fortunately, I already know how important it is to take care of our inner child, and do the necessary work to care for and love ourselves and not relying on others to do so. Ultimately, I want you to know that you are ALREADY enough, and worthy, and loved - no matter your weight or size. Please continue to show up as your unique, vibrant, and magnetic self, because no one can take that away from you!

I am beyond excited to welcome today’s guest, Waylynn Lucas, to the podcast! We’re diving into what life can look like when you follow your fire, instead of taking the ‘normal’ path that looks just like everyone else’s. Waylynn’s story is fascinating; she’s had a variety of unique life experiences, and she hasn’t been afraid to pursue different passions on her journey. Waylynn’s energy, spirit, and no-nonsense attitude is one-of-a-kind, and she is truly a light in the world.
Waylynn Lucas is the cookbook author of Sunny-Side Up, more than 100 recipes from the essential egg to the perfect pastry. She is the encouraging but honest judge on Food Network’s hit show, Cake War. Her love of country life and the outdoors has brought her back to the basics of food and life, where she now owns and operates a wholesale bakery, Butter & Barley. She strives to deepen her culinary knowledge, expand her homestead to gardens, cheese making and raising her own food. She also wants to be the voice to bridge the gap between farmers, ranchers, and the restaurant-consumer world, and connect the people back to their food on a wholesome and educated journey. Waylynn hosts women’s horsemanship and country culinary retreats with her gal pal and best friend, as well as offering life and success coaching in a business they call Grit Grace Grow.

I have a very fun episode to share with you today! My good friend, Emily Reuschel, is joining me on the podcast, and we’re talking about something we both TOTALLY nerd out about - habits!
Since we’re approaching the end of 2023, Emily and I thought it would be beneficial to dive more into habits and share some tactical tools and takeaways to help you re-evaluate your current habits, or re-establish new ones all together. We both feel very passionately about habits, because they can really enhance the FULL 360 view of your life. The power of tiny habits has majorly impacted our businesses, health journeys, and personal growth journeys.
Emily Reuschel is a farmer’s wife, mom of three, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, podcast host, and the leader of retreats and masterminds that propel rural women toward their truest, most-aligned goals and priorities. She helps other rural women get clear on what they want, release the inner dialogue that tells them it’s impossible, and go after the goals that are keeping them awake at night …. without giving up the small-town life they love.

Hi, my name is Kiah and I am a recovering people pleaser. I’m introducing myself like I’m at a people pleasers anonymous meeting and honestly, if those groups don’t exist maybe they should.
As a people pleaser, I have had a tendency in my life to keep my thoughts and feelings to myself because I didn’t want to rock the boat, upset people, or just generally be uncomfortable. I saw my thoughts and feelings as a me problem and I didn’t want to burden anybody else with them. There are some problems with this which we’ll get into in a second, but as a recovering people pleaser, one of my main goals I’ve been working on is being brave with my words.

Social media… What a wonderful, terrible place. Am I right? I have a love-hate relationship with it. I’m so grateful it is a way that I can connect with so many of you, I have made some of my very closest friends through social media, and I’ve also learned a lot in the space.
But, it can also be a source of a lot of stress and anxiety for me. It can feel like keeping up with joneses as a small business marketing online and lord knows it can lead me down a spiral of comparison and yep, envy.
BUT, it’s not all bad. In fact, I’ve come to realize that some of these uncomfortable emotions, like jealousy, can be really helpful when we stop long enough to get curious and learn from them, which is what we’re chatting about today. And it’s not just something we feel scrolling social media either. Let’s dive in!

It might sound silly to some people, but back in high school (and long after) I had a personal rule to never let my legs show above my knees. Along with that rule, I had several other rules on a long list of conditions for my own self-acceptance. I have since been working on overcoming those rules, and I am celebrating myself for loving and accepting my body in lots of different ways. Seemingly small ways that actually mean a lot to me. And I want to celebrate you for the steps you’re taking too.

In today’s episode, I have the honor of chatting with powerhouse guest, Jessie Jarvis. Jessie is a fellow rancher, a new fellow podcaster, and today we’re covering topics such as family heritage, business advice, and the necessity of courage and confidence.
Jessie Jarvis was born and raised on her family’s cattle ranch in Southern Idaho, which at an early age, instilled in her the importance of a strong work ethic, and a deep appreciation for American agriculture and the western way of life.
In 2020, Jessie founded Of The West, a job platform that focuses solely on jobs in the agriculture and western industries. As someone who has been on all sides of the spectrum—as a job seeker, a business owner, someone looking for various service providers, and as a freelancer—Jessie deeply understands the obstacles one must navigate when job hunting or looking to hire for employment or project purposes in the agriculture and western industries.
She, her husband Justin, and their two children are proud to be the third and fourth generations carrying on their family ranching operation.

If you’re listening to this in real time, we are just a couple weeks away from hitting the middle of the year. We typically think about setting goals and casting big visions for our lives and our careers at the beginning of a new year, but I think it’s important that we make time throughout the year to check-in with ourselves, check in on our progress, and reevaluate if we’re still going in the right direction or even climbing the right mountain. Things change, and it’s okay for our direction to change as a result of that. But if we keep just our heads down and never assess how we’re feeling and if the path we’re on is still even aligned, we may reach the destination only to discover we wish we had gone a different direction. So, this week, let’s ask ourselves some check-in questions and explore how we can set some aligned intentions for the rest of the year moving forward. Let’s dive in!

In this episode, I have the joy of welcoming a long awaited guest, my very own husband, Brent Burchett! When I first started this podcast about two years ago, I asked Brent to be a guest on the podcast and much to my dismay, he said no! He then agreed that if I made it to 100 episodes, then he’d be a guest on the show. So here we are! 100 episodes into the Climbing with Coach Kiah podcast and he kept his word.
Brent Burchett serves as Executive Director of the San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau. His 15-year career in agriculture and public policy has included service at the local, state, and federal levels of government, including the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, Kentucky Soybean Association, Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council, Kentucky Secretary of State, and the Office of U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell. Burchett is a proud graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture and the Martin School for Public Policy and Administration. He grew up working on his family's grain and tobacco farm near the western Kentucky town of Murray, and lives today in San Luis Obispo with his wonderful wife, Kiah.

“Compared to what?” This was a question my grandpa would always ask us when we chatted.
Even if all I was asking him was “how are you doing?” It was a powerful lesson in perspective, in realizing that everything we think, believe, and feel is always in the context of what we’re comparing it to. So in today’s episode, I’m challenging you with this question and the power of perspective.

Today we have a special guest coming to us all the way from Texas! On this episode, Katie Beal Brown shares her journey and advice of building a brand that celebrates your roots.
Katie Beal Brown is a fourth-generation West Texan, born and raised in Midland, TX. Growing up, some of her fondest memories were from the time spent with her grandparents out on their family’s ranch in Far West Texas near Fort Davis.
With years of experience at industry-leading agencies, she set out on a new venture to build her own brand, Lone River, celebrating her roots in West Texas. Lone River pioneered the tequila-style hard seltzer category with its introduction of Lone River Ranch Water and more recently Lone River Ranch Rita. Lone River now leads the tequila-style seltzer category as the #1 Ranch Water in the U.S. Katie continues to lead the business on a day-to-day basis, as CEO of the brand and works closely with Diageo leadership to build further on Lone River’s success.

This year, I planted my very first garden, or as I like to call it, my “yarden.” I’ve partnered with my local farmer-owned co-op Farm Supply Company for the process. What you need to know is that historically, I don’t have a great track record with plants. I either drown them with too much love and water or just forget they exist entirely until they shrivel up and die. I’m working on finding the happy in-between.
I took on this project to prove to myself once again that new habits can be formed, identities can shift, and maybe I do have a green thumb after all! Time will tell. But so far, things are going better than expected and I've learned a lot, not just about gardening, in the process, but also about myself. So in today's episode, I'm sharing 5 things my yarden is teaching me.

I recently got home from Emily Reuschel’s ASCEND retreat which brings rural women together who are ready to find community, growth, and step into the next chapter of their lives. This is a really exciting week for me. As I'm recording this, I'm getting ready to head to Fort Worth, TX. I have been chosen as an honoree of this year’s Cowgirl Magazine Cowgirl 30 Under 30. As I’ve been preparing for this amazing opportunity, I noticed a lot of feelings of imposter syndrome coming up in me. Things like, “Do I even deserve this award?” and, “Am I worthy of this honor?” So while I know these aren’t true, I also know I'm not the only one who has experienced these feelings. So today I'm digging into imposter syndrome and some ways to overcome it.

As a dreamer, I tend to get caught up in the future, dreaming of big bold audacious dreams for my life. It’s great, but constantly living in the future has a tendency to steal my attention from being present in the moment. Aware of that pitfall, one of my guideposts for this year has been to romanticize my life. Not the one I’m creating for myself in the future, but the one I’m living in right here and now.
The 5 Ways to Romanticize Your Life are:

This might be a weird question… but does your wardrobe spark joy? How do you feel when you open up your closet? Do you have some clothes you love, some that fit, some that don’t, some that are sentimental, and maybe some you call you “goal” clothes for when you can finally fit into them? Does your closet make you feel shame? If so, then it’s time for a refresh.
What would it feel like to open up your closet and feel joy? To feel peace? To feel ease? Let’s talk about how you can create those feelings in that space for yourself.

I have broken up with my scale. Here’s the thing: scales aren’t bad. They are a hunk of metal and plastic, there is nothing moral about them. They are an inanimate object that’s job is to provide data. And that data isn’t even bad! Whether it’s higher or lower than you’d like, it’s simply a string of numbers measuring a mass. Now, all that said, our relationship with this totally neutral object may be anything but neutral. And I think our society has been conditioned to put more weight into what it says, pun intended, than is actually helpful for our overall health. Today I’m going to discuss 7 ways to measure health without a scale. So, if you are exploring the idea of breaking up with scale while also still wanting to focus on your health, this one is for you!

Here we are. The last podcast episode of the year! It blows my mind that we’re wrapping up another year. I think people feel a mixed bag of emotions about the end of the year. I want us to embrace the perspective of gratitude; gratitude that you’ve come this far, that you’ve overcome 100% of your hardest days, that you’ve grown so much over the past year, and that you have the gift of another year. As we wrap up this year, I wanted to do an episode that reflects on the best of all the things in 2022.

I’m a big believer in ending the year by creating a vision for the new year ahead. BUT, before we jump the gun and dive into 2023, let’s take a moment to reflect back on 2022. Growing up as a closeted gay kid in the Midwest, Derek sought to find relevance through achievement. It worked. He rose through youth leadership organizations through his mid to late teens, and eventually, started a career in leadership development and training in the food and agriculture sector.
Derek created his relevance through his relationship with his career. Ultimately, achievement didn't suffice as the antidote in finding self-love and self-trust. Throughout Derek's 20s, he's unpacked and explored the belief systems of his life through the lens of a gay kid growing up in a rural America.
Today, Derek continues that lifelong journey of supporting others by digging deep to live a life full of joy and abundance, be that in their career, leadership journey, or overall life.
In this episode, we cover:
How self love is a constant journey that we have to strive for every day
How better the workplace would be if we felt comfortable and safe to show up as our whole and true selves

I wanted to keep this week’s episode short and sweet, because I’d love for you to spend more time with yourself and the people that you love than with me. Let’s pretend this episode is twice as long, but the second half you just hang out with yourself in reflection, how does that sound?
This, of course, is the season of gratitude. If you’re listening to this the day it’s released, tomorrow is Thanksgiving. But before we get there, I just want to hold space for you to slow down and take a few deep breaths to tap into how you’re feeling today and in this season. Whatever comes up for you, allow it without resistance. Feel what needs to be felt.

Some things never go out of style. Like taking pride in a job well done, building upon your family legacy, remaining steadfast in faith and honoring the past while making room for the future.
Today’s podcast guest, my dear friend and singer-songwriter Jenna Paulette, understands all of this and reflects it in her music — a Texan cowgirl who came of age amid the gritty realities of ranch life, introduced to the time-tested genre of Country music as young as she can remember. Her path has taken her to Nashville, countless stages across the country, and ultimately signing a publishing deal with Brad Paisley’s Sea Gayle Music earlier this year.
Today you are in for a treat as we chat with Jenna about her journey of doing what she loves most, writing and playing country music while staying true to her country roots.

In today’s episode, I am bringing my friend Kori Dover onto the show. Kori is the California Beef Council's registered dietitian and resident health professional, providing evidence-based education, resources and communication around beef nutrition.
She is also the voice behind GFree Kori, where she explores gluten free and guilt free living as a food lover and mom who happens to also be a registered dietitian with celiac. As Kori says, “there is no one-size-fits-all model in health, nutrition or with food. We create connections, celebrate and honor our cultures with food, and eating well should not leave you unsatisfied and hungry. Most of all, food and eating should not be based on fear."

Today’s episode is straight from my journal. Lately as I've been traveling and speaking, I've been doing a lot of self reflection and talking through my thoughts out loud. I’ve been going through a bit of a funk and am finally getting some clarity as I've processed things. Taking the mess in my mind and putting it outside of me - whether that’s through a conversation with someone or onto paper in my journal - has been exactly what I've needed.

Today I get to introduce you to an incredible woman, Carey Portell, who I met in person while I was speaking at a Red Angus Convention in Boise, ID. I was blown away by her story and her heart and I knew we needed to bring her on the show to share with you. As a keynote speaker and author, Carey motivates and inspires her audiences to break through limitations, learn to believe in oneself, and tap into their higher power as a source of inspiration. Her message teaches us to thrive despite challenges and arrive with an attitude of gratitude on our path to success.

In this episode, we continue our conversation all about mental health. Today I’m introducing you to Jason Medows. Jason was born and raised on his family’s cow calf operation outside of Cuba, Missouri. He grew up playing football and baseball and was involved in his local 4-H. In 2002, Jason left the farm for St Louis College of Pharmacy. He graduated in 2008 with his Doctor in Pharmacy and returned home to work at a local hospital and continue the cow-calf operation he started in college. It was at that local hospital where he met his future wife, Keri. Fast forward 12 years and they have four boys and have purchased another farm of their own. In 2019, Jason began his podcast, Ag State Of Mind, where he combined his medical background with his passion for agriculture to help break the stigma surrounding mental health in agriculture. In this episode, I am chatting with Beth Probst. Beth is a plus-size, mediocre runner who started running after a few too many mojitos and declaring to her friend's she was training for a half-marathon (she was not). A few months later she crossed the finish line. After a decade of racing, she published her first book: It Could Be Worse: A girlfriend's guide for runners who detest running. In addition to tactical running tips for plus-size runners, this is a story about an ordinary gal redefining what success looks like - and the power of showing up for yourself.

This last weekend, Brent and I had two of my nieces, McKinley and Cora, for a weekend sleepover. We crafted, had a movie night, countless kitchen dance parties, we cooked together, went to the beach, went to the toy store, had ice cream, went on nature walks, and got glammed up and fancy for a photoshoot. Not only did we all have a BLAST, but they also taught me so much as well. In this episode, we’ll chat about:

In this episode, I chat with my new friend Alex Youdim. Shortly before his 40th birthday, in the height of the pandemic, he was laid off from a job he loved and broke up with his girlfriend after 5+ years invested in each and finally decided to take control of his life. In the year and a half since, he’s refocused on himself, his health, and his mindset. Along the way of losing 120 pounds and counting, he has found a version of himself that he loves and for a long time thought was lost.

On this week’s episode of the podcast, join me in a candid conversation about before and after photos inspired by a weight loss company that recently stole mine. To be honest, I have mixed feelings about them. I waver between seeing them as a powerful tool to inspire and connect with others while also struggling with how to make sure they aren’t unintentionally instilling more shame and perpetuating the problems that diet culture has created. We all have a lie of “once.” I’ll finally be happy ONCE… once I lose the weight, once I have the ring, once I buy the house. But most of the time what we truly want isn’t the thing, but the feeling we think the thing will give us. For me, the story was always weight loss. That’s what I thought I wanted. But what I actually wanted was acceptance, self-love, romantic love, self-confidence, freedom, joy, and energy and to keep up with my nieces.
We don’t want THINGS, we want the feeling we think the things will give us.
But here’s the kicker…
Feelings are born of thought, not circumstance. MINDSET is everything.
How you think and feel about yourself influences the way you show up in every aspect of your life. What you THINK. Impacts how you FEEL. Which determines what you DO.

It’s that time of year when people might start backsliding on their goals. Instead, let’s talk about how failure is an inevitable and vital part of our journey to success. It’s time to RETHINK failure. It’s time we start fabulously failing forward, my friends.

‘Tis the season of joy, family, giving, and gratitude but sometimes the holiday season can also bring with it sadness, anxiety, depression, and grief. Thankfully, the good news is that the very thing that can help us navigate those uncomfortable emotions happens to be built right into the season: gratitude.
I started my own personal development journey with gratitude FIRST, establishing the habit of writing down five simple bullet points of gratitude each morning. This simple practice, which I have now been implementing for three years strong, has quite literally changed my life.

In honor of October being National Women’s Small Business Month, I am dedicating the next four episodes to women entrepreneurship. I’ve found that whether it’s the journey of health or business, the underlying factor that determines our success is the same: mindset.
We’re kicking off this series with my own entrepreneurship story. The journey to becoming Coach Kiah has been anything but a straight path. Growing up I never intended to become an entrepreneur, but over time my heart (and homesickness) eventually pulled me in that direction. There have been lots of unexpected twists and turns along the way and in this episode, I share with you the story of how it all unfolded.

In this episode, I’m going to get fired up talking about a topic that is extremely important to me - how to break free and ditch diet culture. Dieting and the culture that surrounds it has stolen years of my life and precious energy, causing me to feel deep shame about my body and hold myself back from simply living and loving myself as I am. I’m not going to stand around and watch other women and men fall victim to the bullshit lies the media and diet industry has sold us all these years so that together we can change the legacy we leave for the next generation. Can you tell I’m passionate about this? Let’s dive in!
