In this episode, Karen Dillon and Rob Cross, co-authors of "The Microstress Effect," discuss the concept of microstress and how it impacts our daily lives. They define microstress as small moments of stress that are created in everyday interactions with people that we're close to personally and professionally. These moments are so small and happen so quickly that they barely register, but their cumulative effect can be enormous.
Rob and Karen categorize microstresses into three buckets:
The hosts emphasize that while these microstresses may seem insignificant on their own, their cumulative effect can be detrimental to our wellbeing. They also note that as we age, we often become narrower versions of ourselves, letting go of activities that once made us who we are. This narrowing of our lives can lead to an increase in microstress.
The episode ends with a discussion on potential solutions to managing microstress, emphasizing the importance of being mindful of the interactions that cause stress and looking for opportunities to shift these interactions.

Ever wondered how our ancient caveman brain can help us nail those sales targets? Well, Dr. Jean Oursler, the results queen herself, and sales whiz Phil Gerbyshak got together for a chat, and boy, did they have some cool stuff to share!
Just Keep Swimming, Folks!
First off, Dr. Oursler drops this gem: "Just keep swimming." Yeah, you got it, that's Dory from Finding Nemo! It's all about keeping your head up and moving forward, no matter what. Pretty neat advice for anyone in sales, don't you think?
Your Caveman Brain: Friend or Foe?
Next up, they dive into this whole "caveman brain" thing. Turns out, our amygdala, the caveman part of our brain, can either be our best buddy or our worst enemy in sales. It's all about the stories we tell ourselves. So, if you're feeling jittery about making that call, remember, it's just your caveman brain messing with you!
Don't Be Shy, Just Ask!
Dr. Oursler also talks about the power of asking. A lot of us in sales kind of wait around, hoping the client will give us a sign. But hey, why not take the lead and ask the right questions? It could be your ticket to more sales!
Party Time: Celebrate Your Wins
They also chat about the importance of throwing a little party for yourself every time you score a win. A lot of us forget to do this, and it can lead to burnout. Plus, celebrating tells your caveman brain you're doing something right. So, go on, pat yourself on the back!
The PB&J of Sales
And lastly, Dr. Oursler introduces us to the "peanut butter and jelly method" in sales. It's all about sticking to a tried-and-true sales process, just like making a PB&J sandwich. Sure, it might sound a bit boring, but hey, consistency can bring in some sweet results!
So, there you have it! Dr. Jean Oursler and Phil Gerbyshak really know their stuff when it comes to sales. They've got some great tips on using our caveman brain, asking the right questions, celebrating wins, and keeping things consistent. But don't just take our word for it, why not check out the full episode and hear it straight from the horse's mouth? Trust us, you won't regret it!

John R. Robertson did as he kept seeing people reacting to issues after the fact. When a âroarâ happens in life there are normal fight, flight, freeze, and appease reactions but what would happen if we ran toward the roar instead of merely reacting?
Instead of treating roars, storms, or crises as something to react to or try to avoid, we can plan for them so that we respond instead of reacting. Sometimes the theme of resilience, well-being, and thriving becomes so clinical, theoretical, or pie-in-the-sky that it is not practical or helpful. Like so many educational approaches, oftentimes the approach tends to be a transfer of information rather than transformation.
Run Toward the Roar reframes thriving and resilience to find and focus on what you love so that you will be faithful and loyal, regardless of the roars that cross your path.

Email replies that show up a week later. Video chats full of âoops sorry no you goâ and âcan you hear me?!â Ambiguous text-messages. Weird punctuation you canât make heads or tails of. Is it any wonder communication takes us so much time and effort to figure out? How did we lose our innate capacity to understand each other?
Humans rely on body language to connect and build trust, but with most of our communication happening from behind a screen, traditional body language signals are no longer visible â or are they? Sales professionals are especially impacted by this, as many of the buying signals traditionally available during in person conversations have been replaced by screen-to-screen lack of communications.

Ever wonder why some people are magnetic, confident in their abilities, in charge of their own destinies, and utterly at ease in their own skin? Whatâs their secret? In a word: Swagger.

This conversation is real, and raw, and it'll give you some swagger, and help you get past those dreaded "swagger blockers" that hold you back.Â
What do you do when self-doubt kicks in? In some ways itâs inevitable. But then again, it doesnât have to be that way. When we focus on what we fear, our fears manifest themselves. When we focus on making feeling good the priority, which helps us reach our goals, we tend to be much more successful. Itâs not that there arenât forks in the road or detours â itâs how we perceive and respond to these that determines whether we start to give up and give in to whatever fears weâre having or use them as a âsignâ that says, âwhoa, stop! Youâre heading in the wrong direction.â Â
Join me for a conversation with Holly Johnson, marathoner and author of How to Make Feeling Good a Priority.
Real leaders will do whatever it takes to solve their problems, even when the process is difficult and frustrating. They have a destination in mind, one that others may not see clearly or at all. They understand that taking a new path is difficult.

There are few one-size-fits-all solutions in sales. Context matters. Complex sales are different from one-call closes. B2B is different than B2C. Prospects, territories, products, industries, companies, and sales processes are all different. There is little black and white in the sales profession.

In a world where digital communicationâemail, tweets and textsâhas taken the place of traditional face-to-face interaction, the underlying subtleties and social nuances that once accompanied real time conversations are now lost behind a screen, and weâre more distracted than ever.
Communicating virtually is cool, useful, and becoming more universal every day. But the actual communication is often quite bad. Indeed, everyone agrees that the quality of human connection we feel in virtual meetings, email, and other forms of virtual communication is awful. Worse than boring, virtual communication very often leads to misunderstandings, because it deprives us of the emotional knowledge that helps us understand context.
How can we fix this? A key problem is that we are busy trying to replicate the experience of a face-to-face meeting in the virtual world, assuming the same rules apply. That is a big mistake. We need to shift our focus and energy to a new challenge, unique to the virtual era.
As communication expert Nick Morgan argues in this essential book, recent research suggests that we need to learn to consciously deliver a whole set of cues, both verbal and nonverbal, that we used to deliver unconsciously in the previrtual era. Indeed, we need to update all our rules of connection for the virtual sphere, rethinking them from the beginning and avoiding the mistake of assuming that they are inherently similar to face-to-face connections.

This book is the result of over twenty-five years of combined experience from Kelly and Robby Riggs-dynamic, occasionally irreverent, always insightful, father (Boomer) and son (Millennial), who work with organizations grappling daily with multi-generational conflict. Through their collaboration, Kelly and Robby share their very different perspectives on the same problems most companies are STILL dealing with, but haven't had the courage or the tools, to address. Issues such as: a shocking lack of leadership skills; the culture-killing generational divide that is demolishing many companies; and the stunning, often unrecognized impact of technology on the workplace.

Harry Mills educates the reader how to reinvent the sales process in Zero Resistance: The Science and Secrets of Supercharging your Sales by Eliminating Buyer Skepticism and Mistrust. For the first time in the history of selling, buyers hold the cards. Google-driven technologies have armed buyers with any time, anywhere access to the choices and information they need to call the shots.
Century-old tell-and-sell persuasive packages of sales tools and techniques, even when dressed up as consultative selling, no longer work. When buyers hold the power and knowledge they resist attempts at direct persuasion. As a result, sales productivity is plummeting. However, psychologists who study influence have discovered a form of influence that's more potent than the many forms of direct persuasion sellers still cling to.
This new, more powerful form of influence is called self-persuasion.
Zero Resistance is the first book to show sellers how to sell more by using the power of self-persuasion to dissolve and eliminate buyer resistance. This book reveals how self-persuasion is the key to engaging and winning the trust of today's skeptical customers.

Kids are natural sales people. They ask. They're curious. Sell like a kid.
Value is only value if the person perceives it as value - at that very moment.
There's a difference between planned and canned. You can't sell to everyone the same way. Find out who you are selling to.
Everybody sells every day, whether we call it that or not.

Selling Boldly System:
In Selling Boldly, you introduce a system for selling boldly - and it's a very simple system.
Is it really that simple?
In chapter 7 you talk about proactive selling versus reactive selling. Can you explain the difference?
In Chapter 23 you say "Silence is money." What does that mean?
How can you really use testimonials to make money?

This conversation was with one of the spunkiest, most giving speakers I know, Neen James. 5 years ago Neen was my "speaker buddy" when I first joined the National Speakers Association. Her book Folding Time was a fantastic book, and when I learned she was writing a new book, I excitedly asked her if I could interview her. She said yes, and this chat is all about that new book Attention Pays.
Show Notes - Attention Pays How can we remember names better?
Neen's advice: Ask them to remind you of their name. Write their name down IMMEDIATELY! Dr. Nido Qubein is the ROLE MODEL for remembering names - the president of High Point University.
Attention Pays
Then we moved on to talk about the topic of her book - attention. Who deserves my attention right here, right now? How do we give our full attention? What is distracting us from paying quality attention?
Attention is transactional - but you can make it intentional - and it isn't hard. It's thoughtful! Sometimes its about eliminating bad attention.
Managing attention is about simplicity - use people's names more. Simplicity is about looking up and looking in people's eyes - listen with your eyes!
People say we have the attention span of a goldfish - this is a marketing myth! Who really counted how long the attention span is?
"We get a choice to pay attention - every single day. Attention creates a moment of significance."

When John David Mann writes a book, I take notice and read it. His latest book The Recipe is a delicious book, perfect for leaders and those interested in building a more cohesive team. John sent me a near final PDF to read back on a Tuesday in May. I fully expected to skim the table of contents, and then put it away until nearer release time, as I had a bit on my plate at the time. Instead, I dug in, and after reading the table of contents and then finishing my work day, I devoured it all that evening. The book is that good!
In this all too brief conversation, John dives into some of the lessons from his latest book, The Recipe. The parable in the book is one we can all relate to, especially if you ever worked in food service. It's about the mentoring of a young boy by Chef, and how the boy overcomes himself to unleash the leader inside him.
John and I also talk about writing content, marketing a book, and much more. It's a conversation you won't want to miss.
John and his co-author, Chef Charles Carroll, also have some fantastic bonuses if you buy The Recipe before October 17th, 2017. I encourage you to go get your copy today of The Recipe, and then dive in to all the bonus materials and the book to take your team and your own work to the next level.
Are you struggling to create content that feeds your network? Wondering how you can be more prolific in writing so people quickly know what you do, who you do it for, and how you can help them? Then you need to listen to this episode, featuring someone I always learn from, Dorie Clark. Her first 2 books were very helpful to me, and to many, and her latest book, Entrepreneurial You, launched this week.Â
In this episode, Dorie pulls back the curtain and shares her secrets for creating great content, and some insights from this book that can help you be more entrepreneurial in whatever you do.

To say Chris Clarke-Epstein is an expert on change is an understatement. She knows more about change than anyone I know. She also knows a thing or two about sales, as she's been doing it for a long time. Â In early 2017, Chris was diagnosed with cancer, and I'm delighted to say that she has kicked cancer's butt into remission. In this conversation, we talk about dealing with change - BIG CHANGE - about sales, about how to add value to people, and so much more.
About Chris Clarke-Epstein Chris Clarke-Epstein, CSP believes if you ask great questions you will get great answers. For 20 years, Chris has asked todayâs leaders thought-provoking questions â pushing them to find new ways to do old things, changing old mindsets to meet new challenges, and supporting those leaders as they search for creative solutions to long-standing problems.

Sometimes you interview someone, and their story just clicks. Talking with Michael de Groot about sharing your story to sell more was one of those times. In this all too brief conversation, Michael and I talk about how to tell better stories on LinkedIn, how whiteboard animations are a core to sales success, and how to unlock the power of telling stories from the heart. All in about 30 minutes. About Michael de Groot, as told by Michael de Groot: It took me a while to discover what I truly enjoy. And when I realised that I have always been interested in computers and more laterally the internet plus assisting people, I can truly say I am now experiencing my dream job. Working for myself of course is the first priority, assisting others to grow is the second priority, everything else just follows.
Staying Alive UK is about just 1 key objective delivered across 2 disciplines. My key objective is coaching businesses and business professionals to become better storytellers.
My business tool of choice is of course LinkedIn and it is the best place to share your personal and/or business story. So this is one half of my business and a major part of my coaching.
The other half is assisting businesses and specifically creative agencies to enhance their storytelling techniques through Whiteboard Animation. An almost childlike medium allowing stories to come alive through hand drawing illustrations and unfolding stories frame by frame. Time to 'Share Your Story'. Jenny Hochschild is an artist. She does physical art and she's an amazing cook. Art is in everything she does. And she loves to share it.
In this all too brief conversation, Jenny shares her art with us, in so many ways. Learn more about her at http://www.mjenniferhochschildart.com
You can watch the video here too if you prefer that.
Jenny Hochschild's Artist Statement I find myself drawn to earth, water and the horizon. It may be that I am looking for something or my curiosity for what is out there is great and so that is my starting point for a painting. It is only in recent years that I realized how much more interesting my work becomes when I focus as much on the foreground space as I do on a point in the distance.
In studying some Japanese art ad block printing, I noticed that the artists often placed an image in the foreground of their composition to draw the viewers eye in and then pull it through to the remainder of the piece. In doing so the artist becomes part of the painting or print as if they are drawing or painting from the view surrounding themselves.
In my own work I have used this technique because I like the depth and perspective it gives to my paintings. Many people have described my work as paintings they feel they could walk in to, sit down and stay a while.
I begin a painting with an image in my mind, sometimes it is from a place Iâve been and either made a sketch or photographed. Sometimes I begin a painting with a photograph to assure the proportions are correct and soon the painting takes on its own life and I simply paint along with its vibrations. Occasionally, I have an abstract image in mind, but always, nature is the life force that pulls it all together.
Clouds have begun to play a large part in my work. They are dreamy and I like the way they want a viewer to watch them and feel the silence of floating through the sky or the power of a summer storm. I think they give a landscape a powerful mood of movement and great depth.
I am a great lover of nature and believe that the natural world tells us all we need to know to survive and live. I believe that beauty and love are the key to happiness and in my paintings I want only to show the joy I feel for life.
I paint because I want to share the way I see the world.

When I get a recommendation for a guest, I listen. When I get two recommendations for a guest - PLUS two introductions to the guest, I know I must talk to this person right away. Such is the case with today's conversation, Joseph Paris, author of State of Readiness. Thanks Karen and Carey!
What is Operational Excellence - and why should you care? I'll let Joe explain it:
Operational Excellence is a state of readiness attained as the efforts throughout the enterprise reach a state of alignment for pursuing its strategies; where the corporate culture is committed to the continuous and deliberate improvement of company performance AND the circumstances of those who work there â and is a precursor to becoming a high-performance organization.â
In this conversation, Joe and I talk about operational excellence, why it matters, and why many organizations would succeed faster if they committed to operational excellence. Learn more at http://state-of-readiness.com

Lisa Haneberg is one of the first people I met in the blogosphere (what we used to call the place where people who had blogs would hang out) nearly 12 years ago. Lisa was a management and leadership blogger who wrote some of the books I used to lead my IT teams many years ago - and are still some of the principles I use today when I'm working with teams.Â
Recently Lisa got the itch to write a fiction book - so she did. And it is awesome. During this conversation, we talk about how Lisa transitioned from non-fiction to fiction author, what is the same about the two genres, and what is different, as well as many other things. I learned a bunch - and I hope you do too!

When any 2 marketers team up to write a book, it catches my attention. When 2 marketers I have huge respect for write a book, I want to talk to them about how they did it, and what lessons they learned in writing the book, as well as what the book is all about. In this winning business conversation, Seth Price and Barry Feldman talk about their beautiful new book The Road to Recognition.
One of the things (and there are many) that I love about this partnership is these guys don't take themselves too seriously. They call themselves "marketing dorks" which is a silly way of saying "these guys are really passionate about good marketing." They complement each other's strengths well and they share a lot about this book.
After you listen to this conversation, you must go get your copy of this book at http://theroadtorecognition.com I have an electronic copy and I love it. It's a gorgeous book to look at, it's easy to read, and it's filled with great stuff you can use to build a powerful brand.

I first met Anh Nguyen when she was in Tampa for her role as an IBM Futurist. We had dinner and a very lively conversation, mostly about life and Houston and Tampa, and connected digitally. We exchanged lots of tweets, lots of Facebook posts, and learned a lot about each other. Since then, I have especially gotten to know Anh even more through the #MobileChat community. And that she feels LinkedIn is a "business only" zone. Which is fun to disagree with her on.
This conversation was a lively one, and we are both glad I do audio only, as the backdrops weren't the best for our video chat. Enjoy this conversation about marketing, social media and #MobileChat with my friend Anh Nguyen.

I first met Jay Jay French at SOBCon in 2009 when he was thinking about writing a book and had never done any public speaking or written much about business. We kept in touch since then and got together for coffee near Central Park one morning, and we talked about so many things, the time just flew by.
Since then, Jay Jay started a column in Inc., went on a 40th anniversary world tour due in large part to the untimely death of their drummer A.J. Pero - and then quit Twisted Sister. To say they were a successful band is an understatement. Gold records. World tours. And more staying power than just about any other band EVER - due in large part to Jay Jay's willingness to change to meet the ever changing business models of the music industry.
In this lively interview, Jay Jay pulls no punches in talking about success and failure, changes and consistency and how he got started speaking. And a whole ton more! Listen in - and pick up a copy of Twisted Sister the Movie.

Time for some truth: I hate being pitched to be on my podcast. Almost always I say no. Except in the case of Louie La Vella. Louie cold emailed me and asked to be on my show, and he was so nice, and so genuine in his pitch, I said yes. I am so glad I did. Louie is a delightful human being. Smart, funny and helpful, with a dash of brash, I like Louie a lot. And I know you will too!
Louie gave Lady Gaga her first interview, has worked with Jon Taffer from Bar Rescue, and hung out with Sir Richard Branson. Whoa!
In this conversation, Louie and I talk about marketing. Why some people get it. Why some people don't - and probably never will. How it's changed. And how you can do it better than your competition.
Louie has been on over 60 podcasts, but he's never been on one quite like this!
Get to know Louie at his website http://louielavella.com
About Louie La Vella Louie La Vella is where the entertainment industry turns to for out-of-the-box bursting ideas. Turning dead venues into packed venues, slow ticket sales into sold out shows, independent musicians into major-label-ass-kicking brands. Taking those amazing stories, experience and knowledge to all business categories.
Hereâs the deal. As a business owner you are smart, savvy and have fantastic success under your belt. Youâre also super busy operating your baby. Stats say that due to the constant changes in social media behaviour, what works in marketing today doesnât work tomorrow. Entrepreneurs of any niche just donât have the time to keep up with changing trends. And thatâs OK.
Persuading customers has become super hard for those that donât keep up to date and study their behaviours. However it is easy for those of us that know exactly how to persuade them.
Get excited. After Louie, your brand will never be the same.

Having a podcast means I get to meet a lot of amazing people. Some I connect with - and they connect with me - and some not so much. When interviewing Keenan, and talking to him on the phone, it became quickly clear to me we would be lifelong connections. Keenan's straight forward approach likely rankles some C-suite executives, but his advice is spot on, and his intentions are crystal clear: to get your butt moving in the right direction with advice you never learned. Hence the title of his fantastic book Not Taught, which is the fastest 90 minute read I've ever had that will take time to implement and achieve. Warning: until you put all of Not Taught into action, you may want to hide from your C-suite leader, as they'll think you're going out on your own or looking for a new job - though that is NOT what this book is about.
Not Taught is all about how the rules of the 20th century no longer apply - and how we can pivot into the next century and succeed because we embrace these sooner than our competition. Meaty, useful stuff.
This episode went way too fast. We covered as much as we could. And we will do this again - soon. You'll want to find Keenan at http://asalesguy.com right away - and start learning from him ASAP.
More about Keenan Keenan is A Sales Guy Incâs CEO/President and Chief Antagonist. Heâs been selling something to someone for his entire life. Heâs been teaching and coaching almost as long. With over 20 years of sales experience, which heâll tell you he doesnât give a shit about, Keenan has been influencing, learning from and shaping the world of sales for a long time. Finder of the elephant in the room, Keenan calls it as he sees it and lets nothing or no one go unnoticed.

You I'm so excited to share this episode with you. Eric Dodge is an amazing musician, terrific speaker, and really wonderful human being. I met him several years ago at a national speaker's association event, and we've been friends ever since.
Why Not Today is one of his best songs, but it isn't just a song, it's Eric's mantra. His way of being. He explains why this means so much to him, and how we can all use that to soar beyond our wildest dreams.
Eric Dodge's music is what makes him famous, but his heart is something you'll notice as soon as you listen to him. And as a bonus, just for us, he performs one of his songs. You won't want to miss this episode!
For more from Eric, visit http://EricDodge.com Why Not Today?!?
More about Eric Dodge Eric Dodge discovered his passion for singing in the most heartfelt of ways. While always having a strong love for music, his greatest fear was to share that passion publicly. On September 11th, 2001, as our great country suffered a terrorist attack, Eric was on a cruise ship outside of Mexico. That fateful day was when Eric made his decision to no longer be afraid. He stepped up to the microphone aboard the ship to share his voice and love of music. He was no longer willing to let his fear keep him from what was truly his gift to the world. He opened up his heart and sang Garth Brooksâ song âThe Danceâ. After his performance, a passenger approached him and encouraged him to pursue a singing career. Just as many others were changed by the events of 9/11, Eric took her words to heart and decided to follow his heart into the world of country music.
Eric has worked with Seth Riggs, vocal coach to the Stars in Hollywood and from there was sent to train with Jeffrey Skouson in Las Vegas. Thanks to these great coaches, Eric began sharing his talents professionally in 2003. Heâs performed hundreds of shows all over the United States and Canada. He has opened for many of Nashvilleâs finest country music stars including: the late Chris LeDoux, Diamond Rio, Little Texas, John Michael Montgomery, Justin Moore, Collin Raye, SheDAISY, Terri Clark, Julianne Hough, Clint Black, Travis Tritt, Lorrie Morgan, Pam Tillis, and Carrie Underwood at the Stadium of Fire â 4th of July Celebration in Provo, Utah in front of over 50,000 people.
Eric has been featured in Americaâs largest country music magazine, âCountry Weeklyâ on several occasions, and on the popular website, Music News Nashville. He was also recognized as âNew Country StarâBest Male Vocalistâ. Eric has also appeared live on many television shows. While performing on Good Things Utah on ABC 4, he met the very popular author and website mentor, Marla Cilley (aka the FlyLady) of www.FlyLady.net. She was so impressed with his performance, she asked him to record a song Titled âWhy Not Todayâ which prompted the release of Ericâs album titled âWhy Not Todayâ. Since then, Eric has accompanied FlyLady to many of her nationwide events where he has performed and been welcomed by thousands.
Eric has recorded many of his albums at OmniSound Studios in Nashville, Tennessee, where he worked with the best producers, songwriters, and musicians. In March of 2006, his first radio single, âAnything for Youâ was released and hit #19 on the New Music Weekly-Independent Artists chart. His second Country album âWhy Not Todayâ reached #3 on Amazons best seller list and his album, âA Christmas Wishâ sold thousands worldwide in its first season released. His fourth album, âHome to Meâ was released in April 2010. Unplugged Journey was a limited release album and was released in November of 2011. A Fork In The Road, a collection of Broadway and other hit songs was release in August of 2012. In 2013 Eric produced his gospel Hymn CD titled Never Walk Alone and in 2014 Ericâs greatest Hitâs CD got released titled Ultimate Collection. In 2015 Eric wrote and released his signature self help book âWhy Not Today? Face You Fears and Chase Your Dreams!â a book about creating the life you were meant to live. Eric Continues to produce and release new music and books to this day and has released 8 full length albums and 2 books to date. In 2013 Eric released his debut book called âBaby Steps to Music Industry Success.â It is a book about Ericâs journey and all the small steps he took that got him the music career and recognition he has today. Eric is also a member of the National Speakers Association where he gives musical keynote events across corporate America.
Eric Dodge is a country boy at heart. When not on stage performing his favorite country songs, you can find him out riding horses or 4 wheelers or camping out at his familyâs ranch. He loves anything outdoors including fishing and hiking. Summer, winter, spring or fall his favorite moments are sleeping outside by the campfire under the stars. From the brim of his hat to the tips of his boots, he is a true country boy.

Michele Payn and I go back nearly 5 years, when I first met her in a hotel meeting room outside of Chicago for a speaker mastermind session. Immediately I loved her style, energy and passion for all things - especially for food.
No, it's not that Michele loves to eat as much as I do (few people do) it's that she is passionate about sharing the truth about food, and in helping people eat the right food.
Think about this: Everyone eats. Yet two-thirds of the U.S. population lives in cities, with many of these individuals never having visited a farm or ranch where their food is produced.
Wow!
In this conversation, Michele shares some insights from her new book "Food Truths," why this matters to her, and how she balances life as a farmer, a mother, and a speaker who travels a ton!
About Michele Payn Michele Payn personifies passion. Known as one of North America's leading experts in connecting farm and food, she serves as a resource for people around the plate. Michele encourages all of her clients and audiences to find people's hot buttons and speak their language - whether it's growing the conversation between farm gate and food plate, developing strategy, or building an advocacy plan. I got to know Brad Szollose when I was looking for a few generational stats to use in a presentation. We're part of a group of speakers who helps each other, and Brad stepped right up to say this was his expertise. I thanked him for the stats, used them in my presentation (with full credit of course) and then started researching him.
HOLY COW!
Brad is a generational expert! He wrote the book on them in Liquid Leadership, and he travels around the world, consulting with companies and delivering programs to young and old, new and experienced leaders, to help them make sense of the confusing mess that can be generational differences.
In this all too brief conversation, Brad shares his insights into these generational differences and how we can lead more effectively by understanding why these differences are true, and by working together to leverage the other generation's strengths.
Brad is also a former stand-up comic, so you'll definitely laugh at some of the things we share.
More About Brad Szollose Brad Szollose is the *award-winning, international bestselling author of Liquid Leadership: From Woodstock to Wikipedia which explores the subject of new leadership styles â mainly how to get the tech-savvy Generation X & Y and analog driven Baby Boomers working together.
But Seriously, WHO is this Guy, and WHY should I listen to him?
Brad Szollose is a business consultant and keynote speaker who helps smart companies understand how much technology has transformed corporate culture and behaviorâŚespecially the behavior of Generation Y Millennials, and how that impacts management, interaction and expectations in The Information Age.
But this is not based on management theory: With a 30 year career as an entrepreneur he knows firsthand what itâs like to grow a company from a simple idea in a coffee shop (without any startup capital), to an internationally recognized brand.
Brad is a former C-Level Dot Com Executive who went from entrepreneur to IPO in 3 yrsâco-founding K2 Design, the very first Dot Com Agency to go public on NASDAQ. His company experienced 425% hyper-growth for 5 straight years, expanded from 2 business partners to 4 with 60+ employees and offices worldwide. At its height, K2 was valuated at over $26 million. His results only management model (ROWE) was applied to the first wave of young Generation Y workers producing great resultsâwinning K2 the Arthur Andersen NY Enterprise Award for Best Practices in Fostering Innovation.

Many years ago I started reading business books. I remember reading First Break All The Rules, Good to Great, Who Moved My Cheese, Love is the Killer App, Radical Leap, and many other great books. I knew there had to be a faster way to get just the highlights of the books I wanted to read, but I really didn't like a lot of the offerings that were out there, so I would try one, and then not use it.
More than a few but not that many years ago, I found one that felt different. It felt different because it was not just a summary of the book, but actionable information I could use. In this conversation, I get to talk to the founders of that company, Steve and Marisa Cunningham, who not only are married, but they work together in their company, Readitfor.me.
How do they do it and stay sane? Why did they decide to launch this awesome book summary service? How does Steve read a book a day? All this and more is answered in this episode of Conversations with Phil!

Adam Toporek is a customer service expert. Not only does he do keynotes and training on customer service, but he has lived it, and grew his family's and his own businesses by delivering great customer service. He gets customer service!
I met Adam last year at a National Speakers Association meeting, and we've been friends ever since. His common sense approach to customer service is refreshing for its simplicity and its honesty. I learn a ton about the right way to do customer service from reading Adam's blog, and listening to his podcast Crack the Customer Code, which is co-hosted by Jeannie Walters, one of the world's foremost experts on customer experience.
In this interview, we crack some customer codes, break down customer service, and share stories of great and not so great customer service.
More about Adam They keep giving Adam Toporek new titles: âThought leader.â âCustomer service expert.â âCustomer experience influencer.â
But he is really just a guy who loves customer service and who spreads his message of Hero-ClassÂŽservice through engaging keynote speeches, high-energy training workshops, and informative writing.
Adamâs business inclinations were demonstrated early on when, as a small child, he disappeared in a department store and was eventually found in the managerâs office playing with an adding machine.
While he has since learned to do what heâs told when shopping with his mother (and his wife), heâs never lost his passion for making sure the numbers add up.

For those who don't know my background, I grew up in Crivitz, Wisconsin, a rural town of 996 people in northeastern Wisconsin. I wasn't the fastest kid, or the smartest kid, or the most athletic kid. In 7th grade, I was one of the worst basketball players on the team. I had generic shoes the other kids called "G-Didas" for generic Adidas shoes. They were Win Streaks, and they were all we could afford.
I didn't believe in myself - at all - in 7th grade basketball. To say I sucked was an understatement. I played 5 minutes a game, if that, and I don't think I scored any points. 8th grade was a little better, and Coach Nelson showed me some sympathy and started me a few games. I averaged 6 points per game. I still had no confidence in my game or me.
It took me until freshman year when I really thought I could be a decent ball player. We practiced hard, harder than I ever had before, and I worked my butt off, in large part because of the belief of my coach, Gary Wondrash. I still believe in myself, and much of that started with Gary's belief in me first. He was a great coach, and I still use his coaching philosophies in how I lead and how I live.
Work hard. Practice hard. Hustle. Don't be afraid to do the hard work. Focus on your fundamentals. Keep improving a little bit more, every day. Learn from your mistakes. Be a good sport. Smile. Sing in the shower.
Easy for him to say. He was the coach. He was my stud coach. He could hit 10 free throws in a row. Heck, he could hit 50 free throws in a row. To say Gary was someone I wanted to be like would be a gross understatement.
But I didn't know his back story, until we had this conversation.
Growing up, Gary wasn't the fastest kid, wasn't the smartest kid, or the most athletic kid. By the time he got to my school as a teacher, he had been awarded all conference in basketball, had set school records that are still unbroken, and he'd impacted some kid's lives.
In this conversation, Gary Wondrash shares his philosophies on basketball, life, and on the value of hard work. On how growing up as the hardest working player on the team helped him be better than his more naturally gifted teammates.
This is one of my favorite conversations, and I hope you'll listen and learn from my mentor, my coach, and now, my friend, Gary Wondrash. He inspired me with this conversation, just like he inspired me my freshman year of basketball.
More about Gary Wondrash * Gary is still a teacher, though not in my hometown. He also is a fitness coach, and teaches older adults the benefits of moving more and eating right. * Visit Gary Wondrash's website to learn more about his fitness coaching and a little more about him. * You can also check out the Tough Kid Challenge, something Gary spearheaded, for kids in the Fox Valley area (in Wisconsin).

One might wonder what chicken wings, sports announcing, nursing, parenting, entrepreneurship, and admissions have in common. If you don't know, then you haven't met Brandon Elliott. I met Brandon several years ago at a speaking engagement I had, and we have been connected ever since.
In this conversation, Brandon and I talk about being a male nurse, how he's overcome discrimination in his work and in his life, how he makes a difference teaching social media to kids in his S.M.A.R.T. program (S.M.A.R.T. stands for Social Media Awareness & Responsibility Training), sports, and a whole lot more.
More about Brandon Elliott As a graduate from the College of Mount St. Joseph Brandon earned his nursing degree while playing football. He was a captain on their undefeated team in 2004 as well. Brandon worked in the hospital setting before finding his niche in long term care. He became a director of nursing services by the age of 26 and is currently known in the Cincinnati marketplace as the nurse liaison for Oak Pavilion nursing center. As a nurse liaison Brandon has become known as a straightforward, responsive professional to the discharge planners in all the area hospitals. He is also using his nursing platform to speak with teenagers about the healthcare field and the wonderful field of nursing.
Here is where chicken wings come in. Brandon's in-laws run a local watering hole, which he takes his turn working.
It is a great place for him to catch up with friends while watching his beloved Bengals and Reds.
Speaking of spare time, Brandon seems to pack a lot into a little. As a graduate and student athlete at Purcell Marian high school here in Cincinnati, Brandon supports his alma mater in several ways. He is a mentor to many of the African-American athletes starting at their first day of school. The most notable role is that of Internet broadcaster for the athletic contests at Purcell Marian.
Brandon proudly represents both The National Black Nurses Association and The American Assembly for Men in Nursing. His spearheading of the annual fundraiser event has made it possible for more scholarships to be awarded for thriving students. He has recently been named the Chair for Social Media/Technology for the National Chapter. It was not a surprise to see Brandon listed as a recipient of the 1st Annual NBNA âUnder 40â award!
Brandon is also the co-founder and CEO of the social media awareness and responsibility training (SMART) program. This non-profit organization was created with his best friend after seeing several student-athletes lose out on scholarships and opportunities because of their social media image and brand. The SMART Programâs mission is to teach students to teach students to use social media in a mature, savvy way, for the purpose of creating a positive personal brand. Our goal is to reach 1 million people by year 2020. 2016 has been great with 40 presentations in the books and over 20 scheduled for 2017!
The most important role that Brandon fills is that of father. Brandon is married to his high school sweetheart and has three very active and pretty daughters, Avery, Macy, and Laney.

One of my favorite things to do is karaoke. I'm not a good singer, but I'm very enthusiastic. Some of my best conference memories are of doing karaoke, and I've even done live band karaoke. So much fun! As I've done this so many times, I've seen good hosts, and bad hosts. I have a ton of respect for those who are really good at being the karaoke meister, the person who helps everyone have fun and cues up the music we sing, and who also sings to fill in the dead air when nobody wants to sing.
The best karaoke meister I've seen is Robb Ellicson. He's just got what it takes to be great. And he's a terrific business person, who markets multiple businesses in addition to his karaoke business. In our conversations, I've learned a lot from him, so it's fun that I get to share him with you.

Charles Lerette aka Hugh Briss is a social media pioneer. He was the first person I remember making social media graphics, nearly 10 years ago now. He's still the first person I look to for guidance on for the right way to use imagery for social media.
With my recent move to Florida, I actually got to spend a day with Hugh, and learned he is even smarter than I realized - and that's saying something. He's a savvy business owner who teaches himself new skills to remain relevant in his niche. Whether it's photography, where he got his degree, creating social media headers, or video, Charles is a smart guy.
Yes, his real name is Charles Lerette. You'll find him online as a photographer with that name, and all his social media identity information online as Hugh Briss. We'll talk about why he did that and so much more in this conversation.

Scott Monty and I first "met" as a contributors to The Age of Conversation series in which hundreds of bloggers wrote a page or two about marketing, compiled it into a book, and gave the proceeds to charity, many years ago. In 2015, Scott and I got to solidify our friendship by meeting at a Social Media Club event in Dallas. In between, Scott worked with Ford to take them from recession to relevance with some of the most interesting marketing that moved the needle.
Scott is also a man who can rock a bow tie. Seriously well. When I think of Scott, I think of that signature bow tie, which is his logo now as well as how he dresses. Super cool!

This episode, I get to talk to someone who I love, have great respect for, and who makes me laugh, all while teaching me something new about life and leadership. It's none other than Chip Lutz, the Unconventional Leader.
I met Chip several years back at the National Speakers Association chapter in Wisconsin, and we have been friends ever since. We've shared a room at convention, he's gotten his certified speaking professional, I moved away to Tampa, and we've kept bantering on lots of things.
What I love about Chip's leadership style is it really is unconventional. He admits there are no secrets to great leadership, and he focuses his message on looking at the common every day things in very uncommon ways. Chip served in the Navy and retired as an officer, after earning the rank of chief in the enlisted Navy. He is remarkable - and he will knock your socks off with his witty humorous ways of talking about leadership.

Leadership is the topic du jour, and few people know it as well as Peter Barron Stark. I've been fortunate enough to spend time with Peter at several National Speaker's Association conferences, and his quietly insightful way of sharing things always leaves me smarter, and wanting more time with him. He is the co-author of Why Leaders Fail with past guest Mary Kelly, which you can listen to here, as well as The Only Leadership Book You'll Ever Need: How to Build Organizations Where Employees Love to Come to Work and coming in 2017, The Only Negotiation Guide You'll Ever Need:101 Ways to Win Every Time, in Every Situation.
To say I got to converse with a master of leadership is an understatement. Peter is straight to the point, with actionable insights, and shares things we can all do to be a better leader.
What I like best about Peter is though he has probably forgotten more about leadership than most will ever hope to know, he is humble and willing to learn from others, as evidenced by his company, and the fact that many of his books have a co-author, which takes his work to another level.
About Peter Barron Stark Peter Barron Stark, President of Peter Barron Stark Companies, is a consultant, coach, speaker, author and co-creator of The Managerâs Toolkit. Peter is one of only a handful of speakers to hold the prestigious dual designation of Accredited Speaker from Toastmasterâs International and the Certified Speaking Professional from the National Speakerâs Association.
Over the past twenty years, organizations around the world have called upon Peter to transform their cultures and maximize the effectiveness of their leaders. He has coached more than 400 executives, managers and supervisors on the art of leading people. Peter specializes in helping leaders improve their communication skills, build stronger relationships, hold direct reports accountable and build a reputation for delivering superior results.
He has been published worldwide in over 300 articles, has written ten books, and created The Managerâs Toolkit, a subscription-based website to help turn managers into leaders. How does someone accidentally get famous? When they show up on a billboard - in Times Square - in her underwear.
If that's all she did, Stacy Nadeau would be worth talking to.
What if I told you that's barely scratching the surface. That Stacy Nadeau is all about building OTHERS up, having a support system, and how to build your own supportive network if you don't have one in your family or existing network.
And though you wouldn't guess it, this is the FIRST ever podcast Stacy has ever done. Give it a listen, and you'll figure out how you can make a difference with your own image, whether you're male or female, tall or short, skinny or not so skinny. Stacy calls this your "Esteem Team" and you can use this in your business and your life.
She also provides some great insights into networking, body image, and why she hired a direct competitor to be her business coach.
And a bunch more than that!
About Stacy Nadeau In the summer of 2005, six women made national news when they appeared on a Times Square billboard, dressed only in their underwear. While other nearby billboards features actresses and supermodels, this one, promoting Dove brand products, promoted real women with real curves and the nation went wild. Doveâs mission was âto make more women feel beautiful every day by widening the stereotypical theme of beauty and by inspiring women to take great care of themselves.â
Suddenly, Stacy, an industrial organizational psychology major at DePaul University, was thrust into the national spotlight. As one of the real women featured in the ad campaign, Stacy quickly emerged as a spokeswoman for healthy body image. She appeared on the Today Show, CNN, Ellen, Dr. Phil, Tyra, and Oprah (twice).
Since then Stacy has committed her life and career to helping women feel great about themselves. Stacy lives in Chicago, IL with her husband, Tim and pup, Dyson. She works full-time as a speaker, consultant, and coach to empower women everywhere.

Pam Thomas is one of the first people I met online, 10 years ago. We've hung out a few times in person too, and to say she is easy to learn from and be friends with is an understatement. She's coached me formally and informally a LOT over the past 10 years, and while she kicks my brain (and backside) with her straight shooting, no nonsense Pam-a-rama style, I never feel judged or like an idiot, which is not the case with every coach.

Michael F. Johnson is an author, a podcaster, an expert in the book publishing world, and one of my favorite mentors. Each week, his podcast Common Sense Comments, makes me think about business in a new way, in 4 minutes or less.
His book Kill the First Tiger is the fastest book I have ever read. Each chapter takes less than 3 minutes to read, though I encourage you to read and implement a chapter a time for your business.
This conversation is no different, though we go a little longer than his usual podcasts do.
About Michael F. Johnson Michael is an author, a consultant and a speaker, offering businesses a common sense look at what's not working to better help them get going so they can do what does work. Bernie Swain has one of the more interesting people I've interviewed. He quit his job to start a speaker's bureau, signed his first deal on a handshake, represented President Ronald Reagan - and now he's written a terrific book.
In this conversation, we talk about taking the risk of starting an agency, how he was able to secure President Reagan as a client, and what's next in his world. We laughed, we shared stories, and Bernie gave us some terrific advice on how to become a success.
More about Bernie, from his about page:
Bernie Swain - founder of the pre-eminent lecture agency in the world, Washington Speakers Bureau - comes from simple, humble, and resilient stock.
His mother, Patricia, grew up working on her parentâs farm, hunted, fished and yet loved to fly; she befriended Charles Lindbergh and other aviators of her time. Bernieâs father lived with his single mother, five sisters, one brother and numerous relatives in a tiny two-room house in one of the poorest mining towns in West Virginia; he spent part of his childhood in the local orphanage.
The couple married and settled down in Arlington, VA, where Bernie and his brother grew up listening to New York Yankees games on the radio and idolizing Bernieâs hero, Mickey Mantle.
Inspired by his high school football coach, Bernie planned on a career in college athletics. He earned his undergraduate and masterâs degrees from George Washington University. In the last few months of graduate work, he met his lifelong partner, Paula, a special education teacher. The two of them started a family during Bernieâs five-year tenure as GWâs Assistant Athletic Director.
At GW, Bernie created one of the first college athletic marketing programs in the country. He also managed the baseball team; its performance was so strong that the team made it to the N.C.A.A tournament for the first time in 20 years. By the time Bernie reached his early thirties, he was well-prepared to become GWâs Athletic Director upon his bossâs imminent retirement.
The year was 1979. Jimmy Carter was President. Headlines of the times consisted of the Iran hostage crisis, Three Mile Islandâs nuclear accident, and Britainâs election of Margaret Thatcher as prime minister. The Bee Gees were popular as was Francis Ford Coppolaâs Apocalypse Now, Tom Wolfeâs bestseller The Right Stuff, and Sonyâs Walkman.
âA friendâs half-serious note spurred us to abandon our careers and risk our familyâs fortune on a preposterous idea.â âBernie
This was also the time when Bernie and Paulaâs friend, Harry Rhoads, sent them the note that inspired all three of them to turn their lives upside down. They quit their jobs to start a lecture agencyâwithout experience, without a plan, and without a single client.
âBernie, you will never be truly happy until you control your own destiny.â âPaula, 1979
The trio started Washington Speakers Bureau from a small supply closet belonging to Chuck Hagel, who would later become Secretary of Defense. For eighteen rocky months, they sat in that closet with their savings running out, unable to compete against the dozens of established agencies up and down the east coast.
âWhat have I done?â âBernie, 1980
Just then, Bernie got his first exclusive speaker, sealing the deal with a handshake. That handshake became a âdefining momentâ for their company as word spread in the small town of Washington. Their roster of speakers started to grow and their market share increased.
âYou gain a certain confidenceâand optimismâwhen you build a business yourself.â âBernie, 1990

Bob Burg is one of my favorite authors and human beings of all time. He is generous with his time and his talent and has taught me so much as an informal mentor of mine for the last 15 or so years. His latest book is Go Giver Leadership (co-authored with John David Mann) and I think it is his best work yet. When I read the book, it actually made me cry, thinking of how wonderful it must be to work for a leader like the leader described in this book. A little about Bob Burg Bob Burg shares information on topics vital to the success of todayâs businessperson. He speaks for corporations and associations internationally, including fortune 500 companies, franchises, and numerous direct sales organizations. Bob regularly addresses audiences ranging in size from 50 to 16,000 â sharing the platform with notables including todayâs top thought leaders, broadcast personalities, Olympic athletes and political leaders including a former United States President.
Although for years he was best known for his bookEndless Referrals, over the past few years itâs his business parable, The Go-Giver (coauthored with John David Mann) that has captured the imagination of his readers.
The Go-Giver, a The Wall Street Journal and BusinessWeek Bestseller, has sold over 500,000 copies. Since its release it has consistently stayed in the top 25 on 800ceoreadâs Business Book Bestsellers List. It has been translated into 21 languages and is Bobâs fourth book to sell over 250,000 copies.
Bob is an advocate, supporter and defender of the Free Enterprise system, believing that the amount of money one makes is directly proportional to how many people they serve.
He is also an unapologetic animal fanatic and serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of Furry Friends Adoption and Clinic in Jupiter, Florida.
The 5 keys of a Go Giver Leader are: 1. Donât get it backwards: donât start thinking youâre the deal. 2. Great leadership is never about the leader. 3. Great leadership is about holding people up. 4. The best way to increase your influence is to give it away. 5. The more you give, the more you have. But Bob and I don't just talk about this book. We talk about sales and leadership, laughter and life, and it's a terrific chat I enjoyed so much. This episode is unlike any I've done before, and it turned out terrifically well. If talking about sex makes you uncomfortable, then this episode is especially for you. Especially if you're a woman.
I talked to Kit Murray Maloney, CEO of O'Actually. Oâactually celebrates sexually stimulating content, products, and knowledge that focuses on enhancing and stimulating womenâs sexual pleasure. The company is dedicated to changing the landscape of adult entertainment to prioritize womenâs arousal by distributing new types of film, audio, visual arts, and literature. Oâactually also shares sexual enhancement knowledge and recommends products that promote female pleasure.
Kit bared her soul (no pun intended) to talk honestly about the importance of women's orgasms, why masturbation is ok, and why porn and pleasure are at opposite ends of the spectrum.
On Porn, Masturbation and Pleasure Phil: Welcome to the show Kit. Tell us why you started OâActually.
Kit: We are here to remind women to owning their own pleasure that is often missed we are here to remind everyone involved that it is important.
Thereâs a real lack of awareness around women's pleasure, and most porn is made purposefully for men. It isnât made for real life.
Phil: Are you telling me porn isnât real life? Ha!
Kit: With the persuasiveness with porn in mainstream life it gets real muddled with entertainment and reality, with the age a young man first sees porn has dropped from 11 to 8. Adults can realize that porn isnât reality but if you are introduced at a young age to sexuality through porn, youâll wind up confused. Not to mention that porn is adult entertainment and made for men to enjoy alone and they are geared towards that stimulus. Because itâs all we have, it gets turned into education or that's thinking thatâs what women's bodies are meant to look like.
Phil: How do we introduce that subject without it being that weird story of the stork or odd story of the birds and bees?
Kit: It does seem we have these extreme porn stories with sex and none of its real. We need to be open and honest factual and truthful. We need to talk about pleasure and we need to be honored. Pleasure is this wildly missing word with sex educators. Iâd like to ask my audience and yours for anyone that has used that word when talking about sex. That used the âpâ word.
Share this: Pleasure is this wildly missing word with sex educators. @KitMalo http://bit.ly/2cRWIxO
Iâd like to celebrate anyone I really think they need to be honored and thanked for bringing that in. We really focus on prevention, prevention of disease, prevention pregnancy, what we donât want to happen, we are lacking the potential the focus and exploration of all the great things of sex and sexuality.
Phil: How did you get introduced to this?
Kit: Back when I was 18 and I was about to go to college and I got affected by the rates of sexual assault on college campus knowing this was arena I wanted to be involved. I went to my college and I was I couldn't hold this negativity into and during this time I experienced my own sexual trauma that I only started sharing. A couple of years ago I realized pleasure is completely missing from the conversation. Heal the trauma A space where we can we all be honest
Phil: Kit, what is your background?
Kit: I was Engaged in Social Activism for about 20 years, accidently picked up a women's study minor. I earned a masters in social economics and gender studies. From there, I got involved with a few early stage businesses and startups.
Phil: You have a podcast. Tell us about that.
Kit: The podcast has been a gift and it combines the things that I intuitively love doing. And I love doing it and learn so much. Iâve had beautiful conversations and itâs been such a gift and Iâve taken it anywhere that I have had questions or been curious. There have been no taboo topics
Phil: Take us through the services that you provide and the products you sell.
Kit: Please keep checking out our site, we are about to have a lot more there it has to be highly curated. Which is hard. And thereâs some exciting stuff to come. There is a surprising amount of women who love to write erotica and I love to give them a space to contribute and to be present and active.
Phil: Itâs not something people talk about. Why do we think itâs such a taboo subject?
Kit: We tell ourselves so many stories as a society and individuals. About sex. And I think we really put sex and women's sexuality into prude and whore dynamic and itâs really hard to navigate whatâs in the middle where are the boundaries. And who am I? I donât live up these clichĂŠs? I donât live up these expectations of people with people who give themselves permission for sex
If you are going to call me a bad name or something, that usually has something to do with the other person than with me.
Phil: Why is it so challenging?
Kit: We are just so ingrained to never talk about masturbation or solo-sex. If we look at sitcoms there is an abnormal amount of jokes around male masturbation and none around about women. I have a great group of women friends and I would have said that we donât have any taboo topics and then I realized we do have those taboo topics; we donât talk about solo sex or adult entertainment.
When we create the space to listen and hear and be honest ourselves we are allowing others to give back to us in that same manner and thatâs what I found with close with whether it be friends or family.
Itâs been great for me, I get to ask all those questions.
Phil: Thatâs kind of scary, right?
Kit: Once we get past that initial uncomfortable part, we get to the business sense. There is the depth and soul to it. and the the genuine holistic part and the importance of orgasms in your daily routine. So many entrepreneurs donât talk about sex, they donât consider it in self care or routines and I am one of the few entrepreneurs that includes it in my talk about self care and routines who has awareness of sex.
I disdain the term work hard play hard. I want to love my work, love my play. I want to genuinely love my life. Now donât get me wrong, I have my bad days, I am human. Itâs not yet truly in the mainstream, to think that. Itâs a mind shift on things, for sure. It doesnât have to be extravagant. Allow yourself to enjoy it.
Share this: I disdain the term work hard play hard. I want to love my work, my play. I want to genuinely love my life. @kitmalo http://bit.ly/2cRWIxO It is deeply important to me and I prioritize things and things comes to fruition for me. Really cool things are possible when you focus on them. And, you have to make choices. There is a balance and trade-offs.
Phil: How can women get started on the path on finding their pleasure?
Kit: We talk about triggers in self development, we can have pleasure triggers. We can pleasure triggers that infuse happiness and pleasure. Just identify one pleasure trigger. It could be anything, and it could change.

This week's episode was a special treat for me. I got to have a conversation with someone I've admired and learned from online for a very long time - but we've never had a chance to talk about anything person to person - until now. Carrie Wilkerson is the author of book The Barefoot Executive and she is one of the most genuine, hard working, smart business and leadership experts I know. Carrie and I talked about: * Her orange car "Tangie" * Her 4 kids, 2 store bought and 2 homemade * Her daughter getting a lime green car - which is way more effective than using "Find my iPhone" for finding a teenager * Her pivot into the leadership space - by writing 1 book a month for 5 months * The Barefoot Executive - and how that got idea and movement started * Her love and pursuit of goals * Carrie's learning recommendation - which is all about the power of 1 - 1 new skill, 1 deficit, 1 growth area or 1 person to study for a whole year!! * And so much more!

While you certainly can just listen to this interview with Mike Robertson, I encourage you to watch it Mike Robertson on YouTube so you can see for yourself the magic Mike does with PowerPoint and Keynote.
Show notes from Is This Mike On? with Mike Robertson Phil: I met Mike Robertson at an NSA conference 2 years ago - and heâs a magician with PowerPoint (and Keynote) too! I knew once I launched my podcast I had to have him on the show, and you'll want to watch the video on YouTube to see just what I'm talking about.
Phil: So Mike â how did you get started with these amazing presentations?
Mike: Sometimes our greatest gift are right in front of us and we donât even see them!!
Letâs start with PowerPoint magic!
I was a graphic designer for 20 years and before that I was into magic! Iâve always had this performance urge.
Five years ago, I wasnât even using slides or even PowerPoint! I started delving into the programs.
Now, I get hired quite a bit to create slides for speakers. I look at the slides as a blank canvas and what is going to enthrall the audience.
It looks like an image⌠like an abstract, an image of modern that you would see in a modern hotel. Only itâs a brick. At a local gas station that has been banged into by so many different doors and as I looked at this image.
As we speakers, we are always looking for stories, looking for the story to tell. And for this one I came up with two.
I came up with you are going to get knocked and bumped around and banged throughout life and as long as you stay the course things are going to be ok.
The 2nd and more profound no matter where you go you are are always going to leave a part of yourself behind leave an impression behind what are you leaving behind damage scrapes beauty artistic.
That shows you the power of something that lasts, something you can do with art.
Phil: Talk to us about the process⌠donât give us all the magic. Do you have to buy another program?
Mike: Everyone has PowerPoint, most people donât take the time to delve into, they just use the templates. Itâs like having a piano and using it to set your drink on! I take the time play around and experiment around with the sliders and confetti effects and scenes. A lot of it is knowing the capabilities of the programs.
Fonts can make a huge difference on your slide, there is a perfect font for everything but no font is perfect for everything.
Learning to think more creatively or artistically vs a whiteboard or chalkboard.
Resizing your pictures instead of just stretching
Every slide you put up is a chance to reinforce your brand
Phil: Do you think many miss the boat with the brand is because they donât know or they don't care?
Mike: They donât know. I hear most people gasp. We tend to forget our audience has just seen the most advanced of all graphics. The slide can become your partner or sidekick in your presentation, but you need to think of it differently. You need to stretch the boundaries.
Phil: Talk to us about magic! How did you get interested in magic?
Mike: I got a magic kit as a kid and then I started checking out books from the library and my dad used to go the convention center in Dallas and there was a magic store next door and he would bring me a new magic trick each year and I would love to stand in front of family and friends and perform. And then at 13 or 14 playing the guitar and the girls loved that and i was a music guy for many years and i loved playing and performing. After all of the things i've dabbled in this is the think i;ve landed in because it satisfies all those urges and lets me use all those skills that i've acquired all the years. We donât often recognize our own gifts. We miss our own gifts because they are part of our own DNA. I look for new ways to channel and new directions. You have to find your niche and expand it yourself.
Phil: How can people get started on finding their own gifts?
Mike: Ask your friends/family. Find what you are good and find a way to use that people arenât using it, that takes you on your own path.

In this episode, Phil is joined by William Powell, The Leadership Advisor, and an expert in human flourishing and on imposter syndrome.
Show notes from William Powell - on Human Flourishing and the Imposter Syndrome Phil: You are an expert in Human Flourishing, which I don't know anyone else even knows about. What is it and why does it matter?
William: Comes from the Greek, focus on the whole person including the environment, when in the work environment when management focuses on the whole person including the environment the whole idea is that human is going to flourish and be profitable
Iâve been applying that across all aspects of my life, my family my business the interconnectedness of everything, how we flourish of our environment .
Phil: How did you get into this, Human Flourishing?
William: I grew up in a poor background, the narrative I told myself and I chased things as a young man that I probably didnât need and more disruptive than i needed and a I met people that were key in changing the direction
I wrote a book, a kindle book, Personal Ecology, about self leadership and ecology and how the environment around influences you and how you influence it. Fell into it and how can i help other people and how can i help other people manifest it
Phil:Let's talk about imposter syndrome. I suffer from this sometimes. You've publicly said you do too. Let's talk about it.
William: Grew up poor challenging and frustrating, my mom was disabled, grew up in the trailer park getting beat up at school for being the poor kid that wore the same clothes and to have such a clear understanding of poverty at a young age. Creating the narrative in my head that made sense to me, even if it wasnât accurate. But to get here⌠the biggest challenge to get here wasn't to get here wasnât to make the money but to overcome the narrative i had developed form that sense of challenge, that was my biggest obstacle. It is my biggest anxiety and even now it still wants to creep out. It isnât the narrative that I want.
Phil: Let's talk about how you cope, what are the strategies you use that are successful or even the ones that donât work and suck?
William: Overcompensate, lizard brain, of course, over coping mechanisms to try deflect and get people to try and cheer you onâŚ. For me, that is my is go to place, when i donât have to take responsibly. For me itâs about being aware that i am feeding myself a false narrative. It may be differ for other people, understanding whatâs your go to place then developing the right place and what's the good self leadership for this, how do I lead the guy in the mirror?
Phil: What are the roadblocks for making things simple?
William: Pace is a big deal. The more I have on my plate the more productive. Legitimately understanding my capacity. For me it was about pace and capacity. The distance between stimulus and response and it may be different for others, you need to know what that trigger is, and no one can say what that is?
Phil: What is the imposter syndrome?
William: Imposter syndrome is defined by whatâs the lie in your narrative and we all have that narrative in our brain that it keeps feeding us. Inside that narrative that you start to tell yourself. Self conscious does not understand sarcasm or self deprecating ways. One of the reasons negative self talk can be so destructive.
Be honest. Admit when you arenât equipped, be willing to be transparent and vulnerable. You arenât allowing others to flourish by not admitting your vulnerabilities. Admit when you arenât good at something.
Phil: One bit of advice for leaders to get started down the path of flourishing and really building others around them better ecology.
William: Look at your organization or team If my people were plants and our culture were environment our process would be the climate they have to exist in would we get fined by the epa or not? Would this help them flourish as a human being? Would this find creative outlets for their passion and develop their skills, well rested and contribute to their organization?

In this episode of Conversations with Phil, I talk to Bernie Borges of Find and Convert, one of my favorite marketing and sales experts. We got to talk in person when I first moved to Tampa, and now, we got to record our conversation so you can listen in as we talk about social business, sales, and more.
Phil: Can you start by telling us about your podcast?
Bernie: My podcast is called Social Business Engine - and we have 106 episodes, itâs mostly large brands, IBM, Wal-Mart, and how they use social media strategically in their business across different functions, not just marketing⌠in sales, human resources, recruiting and internal communications.
Phil: How are you qualified to talk about social business?
Bernie: I have 10 years in tech sales and then transitioned over to marketing, 10yrs in corporate marketing, and my agency is 14 yrs old. Plus Iâve been podcasting.
Phil: Why have a social business?
Bernie: Simply put: Consumers donât want to hear from the marketing department, they want to hear from the people. Click to tweet this quote!
Itâs the job of the marketing department to cross promote and tell stories to show others the good work your company is doing.
Phil: What are you up against if you think you are just going to advertise on social?
Bernie: If you donât have a big brand or big budget then youâve got to get out into the employee ranks and identify the ones that are doing amazing things for your company and capture their stories. Meet those people face to face and interview them, make it comfortable for them to tell their stories and then the marketing departmentâs role is to package it up for telling/sharing.
Phil: Why do you think that more organizations donât do that? Why doesnât it work?
Bernie: They donât know to do that. They havenât thought of that approach, they are working on the traditional model.
Phil: Whatâs the benefit of getting the employee to tell their story instead of the brand?
Bernie: Edelman Trust Barometer has been published every year, and it shows people trust people over the brand. When you strengthen your bond with your employee and you strengthen your relationship with your customer.
Phil: Why is target audience so important?
Bernie: Delivering your marketing content to the audience that has the most probability of sharing your message and influence sales. A B2B seller has to understand the buyerâs journey and understand all the stages of the buyerâs journey and what the buyer needs in each of those stages and all the messages have to align with each stage.
Jason Miller from LinkedIn has coined a phrase âBig rock content.â Make a big rock - then you can slice it up and repurpose it. From creating one big piece of content and through smart persona based marketing you create assets for each persona.
Phil: So whatâs next for Bernie Borges?
Bernie: Iâve been delivering a Social Sharing training program to different companies and now packaging it up to deliver online for business development. Session 1 is the âWhyâ and then sessions 2-4 are all one on one coaching sessions. Once they start seeing the results they really start to understand it.

If you have felt the pain of knowing you werenât fully engaged at work or at home (or both), or if you have an important person in your life experiencing this or perhaps you manage a team that is struggling with disengagement., then this interview is for you!
