House Of The Dragon is one of the biggest shows on TV and the sound of the show is one of the big reasons for that success. Al Sirkett (Re-Recording Mixer/Supervising Sound Editor), Barnaby Smyth (Foley Artist /Foley Supervisor), Ruth Knight (Sound Editor) and Doug Cooper (Re-Recording Mixer) joined me for an in-person interview to talk about the immense challenge of building the world of Westeros through sound. They also discuss the many different kinds of fire recordings they used, and some keys scenes including The Battle of Rook's Rest, The Red Sowing and Blood and Cheese's mission. Arcane is a ground breaking animated series, especially when it comes to how the show used music and sound design, working together, all the way through the process. In this special conversation from the Riot Games Campus, in California, Supervising Sound Editors (Eliot Connors & Brad Beaumont) sat down with the series composers (Alex Seaver and Alex Temple) to talk about how each of their contributions, inspired the way the others approached their work. They discuss how the musical themes evolved throughout the series, how the sound design had to be based in organic sounds and their desire to make the sound live up to the impressive visuals of Arcane. If you enjoy this episode, go back to eps 309 for more Arcane talk, with the re-recording mixers Penny Harold & Andy Lange. SPONSORS:

Hospitals are really hard to create sound design for. The walla and general soundscape of a hospital is very different than any other location, because they are dense but not necessarily loud. Plus there are lots of medical machines that need to be accounted for. In the new HBO emergency room drama, The Pitt, this challenge is amplified as the show takes place entirely inside an especially intense ER. Supervising Sound Editor Bryan Parker and Re-Recording Mixers Ed Carr & Todd Grace, tell us how they used the sounds of The PItt to increase the tension, emotions and payoffs..... all with almost no score in the series. No detail was left to chance, as a map of the fictional emergency room was used extensively by the sound team, to motivate panning and what kind of sounds are heard by the audience. The use of sound design to draw you into the story is one of The PItt's greatest triumphs.SPONSORS: Check out one of Sound Ideas latest libraries The General HD vol 6, which brings over 4000 new effects, to add to your arsenal of sounds: from the deepest depths of the ocean, to the highest peaks of mountains and well beyond. Penny Harold and Andy Lange tell us about their work as the re-recording mixers, on Season 2 of the hit Netflix animated series, Arcane. This is a show with intense dialog, massive sound design, soaring songs, and a bombastic score. Wranglng all of these elements into a cohesive whole, was a fun challenge. Arcane's groundbreaking artwork and visual style, made it a tall order to match that level with the series' soundscape. I love a good book about sound design or other aspects of the audio post industry. Think of this episode as a summer reading guide for the audio nerd. The authors of 3 recent publications about sound, get together to talk about their books, how they decided to write them and how to best use them as resources. Emi Paternostro talks about his book "The Pro Tools Post-Audio Cookbook", Gina Zdanowicz discusses "The Game Audio Strategy Guide" that she co-wrote (with Spencer Bambrick) and both Andrew Knight-Hill & Emma Margetson are here representing their book "Art of Sound: Creativity in Film Sound and Electroacoustic Music"SPONSOR: Sound Ideas Annual Memberships put Sound Ideas’ full range of over 600,000 sound effects, music tracks, and production elements at your fingertips with three tiers to choose from based on your Sound Design needs. After over 300 episodes talking mostly to sound editors and re-recording mixers, let's get to know what the people we work in parallel with, are going through in their gigs. Tim talks to two successful music supervisors, Jody Colero and Michael Perlmutter, about the trials and road blocks that they encounter overseeing the music in high end series & films. They discuss how important a good music editor is, important ways they can save the post production process time and money and why it is important to get picture editors clearable music early on. Plus, the perils of people hoping they can get an expensive song on the cheap, because their brother's, best friend's, wife used to date the bass player from the band. Spoiler alert: it rarely actually works out.SPONSOR: Sound Ideas Annual Memberships put Sound Ideas’ full range of over 600,000 sound effects, music tracks, and production elements at your fingertips with three tiers to choose from based on your Sound Design needs. For the film Becoming Led Zeppelin, a documentary about the formative years of the group, the sound of the band was one of the most important elements. Supervising Sound Editor Nick Bergh had to figure out how to get the best possible audio quality from source material that was over half a century old. From tracking down quarter inch tapes in Australia, to finding the perfect pressings of albums, and having the National Archives hand deliver historical recordings, extraordinary efforts were given to make everything in the film sound it's authentic best. Nick tells us about how he personally did all the audio transfers, how he dealt with mostly mono material for use in an IMAX mix and lots more.SPONSOR: Sound Ideas Annual Memberships put Sound Ideas’ full range of over 600,000 sound effects, music tracks, and production elements at your fingertips with three tiers to choose from based on your Sound Design needs. The Listeners is a BBC series, that is not an easy project for any sound team to take on. The plot revolves around a mysterious sound that only a very small number of characters can hear, but it is intense and intrusive for those that can experience it. Over the coarse of the 4, hour long episodes, the ones that are being effected by the mysterious hum search each other out and try to band together for support.  They find relief in each other, but to the outside world they look suspiciously like a cult of people, with a loose grip on their sanity. So how do you represent this idea on screen?  A constant sound that only a few people hear, but they hear it so intensely that it over takes every part of their life?  That was the riddle presented to Steve Fanagan (sound designer/supervising sound editor), Michelle Cunniffe (re-recording mixer) & Louise Burton (Supervising Dialogue Editor).SPONSOR: Sound Ideas Annual Memberships put Sound Ideas’ full range of over 600,000 sound effects, music tracks, and production elements at your fingertips with three tiers to choose from based on your Sound Design needs. Robert Egger's latest film, Nosferatu, is loaded with dread. That feeling of dread is largely delivered by the amazing sound design created by Damian Volpe (Sound Designer, Re-recording Mixer & Supervising Sound Editor), Steve Little (Supervising Sound Editor, Dialog Editor & Supervising ADR Editor) and the rest of the sound team. Egger's instructions were to base everything on organic sounds, so eerie ambiences were built out of the actors breathing and machines were built to create haunting winds. They also discuss the voice processing that was done to create the iconic voice of Count Orlock and lots more. Director Steve McQueen's new film, Blitz, is full of stunning visuals. The audio team was tasked with coming up with sounds that could match, and often exceed, the beauty of the images they are accompanying. The war surrounding our main characters is often happening off screen, as the bombs are raining down as a catalyst for the human drama happening in underground shelters and tube stations. The team had to dream up the sound design of steam trains, massive fires and explosions galore.  All of this while creating a realistic sound scape for 1940s London. James Harrison and Paul Cotterell both served as Blitz's re-recording mixers and supervising sound editors and they are joined in this talk by production sound mixer John Casali. This episode is sponsored by Sound Ideas, check out their 50% off sale happening now until Jan 31st: www.sound-ideas.com Notes: https://tonebenderspodcast.com/295-blitz/ Podcast Homepage: tonebenderspodcast.com This episode is hosted by Timothy Muirhead

Gladiator II is the massive sequel to director Ridley Scott's award winning original film, released in 2000. This time everything is raised up a few notches though. The sound team of Paul Massey (Dialog/Music Re-Recording Mixer) Danny Sheehan (Supervising Sound Editor), Matt Collinge (Supervising Sound Editor & SFX/Foley Re-Recording Mixer) and Stéphane Bucher (Production Sound Mixer) had to equal, and even exceed, that levelling up with their sound work. So much detail and effort went into making the crowd reactions in the Roman Coliseum, almost narrate the emotions of the battles. The production sound team and the audio post team had to work hand in hand to create this impressive feast for the ears. This episode is sponsored by Sound Ideas, check out their 50% off sale happening now until Jan 31st: www.sound-ideas.com Notes: https://tonebenderspodcast.com/294-gladiator-ii/ Podcast Homepage: tonebenderspodcast.com This episode is hosted by Timothy Muirhead

Wicked has music that swings from massive orchestral pieces, to delicate underscore. There is sound design adding comedy, tension and fear. On top of all that, there is the singing, recorded live on set, that really brings out the emotions of the story. Production sound mixer Simon Hayes tells us how they captured the vocals on a busy set and supervising sound editors Nancy Nugent Title & John Marquis discuss building up the sounds to create the sonic world of Oz. Supervising music editor Jack Dolman, discusses how the music all came together from pre-records to the final edit. Wind is hard to do sound design for.... really hard.  What can sound like a huge powerful gust, when you are out in the world with a microphone, is often a major let down when you get back to the studio to listen. So I jumped at the chance to talk with the Twisters sound team to learn how they tackled the winds in this tornado focused film. Supervising sound editors Bjorn Schroeder & Al Nelson are joined by re-recording mixers Chris Boyes & Pete Horner, as well as assistant supervising sound editor Sarah Shaw, to break down how they designed the swirling wind (and lots more!) in this blockbuster adventure film. The Palme D’or winner from this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Anora is the latest film from director Sean Baker. Anora is also one of my favourite movies of the year so far. Co-supervising sound editors (and also the re-recording mixers) Andy Hay and John Warrin discuss how they molded the sound of this film. The film was largely shot docu-style with lots of overlapping dialogue and real life sound obtrusions, and a significant amount takes place in dance clubs with loud music blaring. These combined to make sound edit and mix particularly challenging.Check out www.sonicdays.com to register and learn all the details on this amazing sound conference happening in Kolding, Denmark from Nov. 19th-21st.This episode is brought to you by Sound Ideas, check out their latest sound effects library Just Wind. https://www.sound-ideas.com/Product/2400/Just-Wind-Sound-Effects-Show Notes: https://tonebenderspodcast.com/283-anora/Podcast Homepage: https://tonebenderspodcast.com/ Tonebenders Host This Episode: Timothy Muirhead

At the premier of Saturday Night at The Toronto International Film Festival, Director Jason Reitman made a special point of telling the audience that the sound team "put in a lot of work into making it feel like they didn't do any work at all". This is not the kind of film that you would think would have tricky sound obstacles, but that was not the case at all. Supervising Sound Editors Will Files, Lee Gilmore and David Butler, join production sound mixer Steven Morrow and music editor Chris Newlin to talk about the challenges they faced on this film. The Sounding Board 4.0 has just been announced by The Cinema Audio Society and The Motion Picture Sound Editors! So that makes it a great time to push out this talk from last year's Sounding Board, that was moderated by Tonebenders' host Tim Muirhead. We have all heard many interviews with Re-Recording Mixers, so as a contrast, this panel focuses on the rest of the important mixers involved in the audio post process. Foley Mixer Gary DeLeone (and his Foley Artist, Michell Kohen), ADR/Loop Group Mixer Jesse Dodd and Scoring Mixer David Boucher all get a spotlight to shine on their craft. How do you use sound to amplify feelings of awkwardness and discomfort? In The Curse the sound design is tasked with making the viewers skin crawl in a very unusual way. In the new film Música (on Prime) we go into the musical mind of Rudy Mancuso. We learn how everyday sounds are re-contextualized into rhythms and music in his brain while he goes about his day. Because the POV of the film changes from what is real to what Rudy is hearing internally, the sound design and mix are extremely important to sell what is happening to the viewer. Re-Recording Mixers Christopher Aud (also Sound Supervisor) and Aaron Glascock take us through how the action "was recorded on set as if it was an orchestra" using up to 100 microphones, placed perfectly to capture each sound clearly. We're launching a crowdsource!

The purpose of this crowdsource is to generate a lot of source material from which to algorithmically generate walla crowds of varying densities and compositions.  The goal is to be able to generate not only large gatherings of walla, but also the much more challenging 4-12 person groups that are often needed in post and games.

For this library you’ll bet setting up and recording one side of a real-live phone conversation with someone that you enjoy speaking to.  To do this, we’ll be using earbuds on our phones during the recording (no speakerphone)  The pauses and breaks in your natural speech will be pretty key to keeping the cadence of the walla sounding natural.
