Stop Selling Hours: Build a Valuable Accounting Firm with Ben TowneKenny interviews Ben Towne, host of the Max Value Podcast and a business valuation expert who owns Towne Advisory and Assure Advisors, about why billable hours don’t equal value and how firms can focus on results clients care about. Ben explains shifting fear into manageable risk by taking small steps, sharing how he moved from outsourcing to building an India-based support firm. He describes valuation as a discovery process that depersonalizes the business to assess inputs, cash flow outputs, and uncertainty, and says businesses of any size can benefit from valuation thinking even without a full formal report. Common overlooked value drivers include clean books, transferability, repeatability, dependence on key individuals, SOPs, and revenue concentration. They discuss AI creating uncertainty but enabling “more with more,” and the ongoing importance of trusted human relationships. Jonathan discusses why optimizing employee utilization can be the wrong goal, proposing outcome-based incentives that reward efficiency and accurate estimating. Host Kenny welcomes executive coach, author, speaker, and leadership consultant Rachel Burr to discuss the myths of personal transformation and her book, “Butterfly Goo: The Down and Dirty Truth of Transformation.” Burr explains how social-media “highlight reels” can make change seem magical and unattainable, and uses the butterfly metaphor to show that real transformation requires entering the uncomfortable “goo” phase—dissolving old patterns and rebuilding from core “building blocks.” She emphasizes that people don’t find their path, they build it, and that hitting struggle doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. The conversation covers acting before feeling confident, treating emotions as data, silencing inner “gremlins,” setting goals while holding them lightly, and leading authentically rather than copying cookie-cutter models. What You’ll Learn: THE IDEA: As bleary-eyed workers return to “normal life” back at the office, many are questioning what their new work life will look like. Leaders now face a dilemma: How do we keep our people—and attract new talent? The answer, according to two acclaimed human resources and performance experts, is deceptively simple. Have more fun. THE WHY: “Work” and “fun” have historically been considered polar opposites of each other. But a quick look under the hood of Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work for in America list reveals an undeniable fact: 81% of surveyed employees say the best companies are all fun places to work. Deloitte has gone so far as to label the 2020s as “The Era of Workplace Fun.” THE ACTION: Incorporating fun at work is integral to business success today. It’s simply easier to attract and retain high-performing talent when everyone is enjoying their work, say Bob Nelson and Mario Tamayo, authors of the new book Work Made Fun Gets Done! Easy Ways to Boost Energy, Morale, and Results (Berrett-Koehler Publishers; May 11, 2021).
Highlights: Why a fun workplace requires more than a breakroom Ping-Pong table or free soda in the fridge Proven, easy-to-use strategies and best practices from leaders at Fortune’s best companies, including Cisco, Salesforce, Hilton, Adobe, and many others Tactics anyone can use to bring more joy to their work and make tasks more fulfilling How to engage the newest generations—Millennials and Gen Z, who make up the majority of the workforce—as well as older and burnt-out employees

One in four workers plans to look for a new job in the coming months. Many are unwilling to give up their newfound autonomy and flexibility. Disenchantment with the way company leadership responded to the pandemic and the way in which companies put financial health ahead of employee health and safety also adds to the reasons for departures. Additionally, the pandemic made workers rethink their career paths and they’ve made up their minds to find work that’s satisfying and with a company whose mission aligns with their values.

The Big Idea: Retaining staff is an urgent issue as turnover rates have experienced an uptick to 57 percent. Research shows that a lack of communication between managers and workers is a leading contributor to employees leaving. Creating a workplace culture of transparency and fairness can help buck this trend. The So-What: Building a great organization where people want to work comes down to instilling the elements of an effective corporate culture across the organization — from the front-line worker to the department manager to the CEO. The four essentials include: 1) determining your principal objective; 2) establishing your corporate character; 3) developing consistent management systems; and 4) conducting business ethically. Key Messages: Kohlhepp provides the ground rules for operational effectiveness, reinforced through on-the-ground examples. He shares: How to shape a corporate culture upon which excellence is the standard How to operationalize conduct that aligns with high expectations How to instill directness as a tenet of corporate character How to avoid costly turnover by ensuring new hires are a cultural fit How to lead in a way that effectively earns the trust and respect of staff Learn more about Robert Kohlhepp at robertkohlhepp.com

The big idea: We’ve been through a tsunami of unprecedented business change. We’ve gone virtual. Reinvented our business models. Cut costs. And forged new supply chains. So, what’s on deck next? Reengaging with employees.
The problem? Despite our newly re-imagined businesses, we’re engaging with employees in the same ol’ tired and ineffective ways. The result? According to a startling new report, a whopping 69% of employees have one foot out the door, 52% are on the job hunt, and 71% are more disengaged than the year before.
The key message: Your employee team leaders and frontline managers are now the most valuable players in your business—even more so than the CEO—says visionary leader and Proudfoot Global CEO PAMELA HACKETT. With the right tools, they’re the ones who will reach your people, create a sense of community, spark collaborations, and re-energize teams to fully engage day after day, and with gusto.

Jeffrey A. Martinovich is a First Gulf War Veteran, MBA, and CEO of JAM Accelerator, LLC, a business consulting and incubation firm. Previously, Jeff was Founder and CEO of MICG Investment Management, a billion-dollar wealth management firm. After the 2008 Financial Crisis, Jeff rejected three government plea offers, resulting in a 14-year prison sentence. Yet the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals reversed twice, two U.S. District Court Judges were removed, and after nearly 7 years, he was released to home confinement in May 2020 to begin rebuilding his life. His book is Just One More: The Wisdom of Bob Vukovich. Learn more at jeffmartinovich.com.
The Big Idea: Celebrating other peoples’ success creates an environment of success for everyone. The more we help each other and lift each other up, the more we can achieve ourselves. Why It Matters: We tend to focus on other people’s failures — schadenfreude is all too common. But a mindset of abundance, not scarcity, can have tremendous individual payoffs. Key Messages: We’re accustomed to competing with each other. Instead, we should just compete with ourselves and take every opportunity to mentor, coach, and support others. Like the mutual power of referrals, cheerleading others reflects back on us. The author can also discuss: How to harness the “Starbucks on every corner” approach: collaborating and coexisting to mutually thrive. Why encouraging people to bounce back and learn from their failures grows an achievement mentality for all. Why comparing ourselves to others sets us up for failure. How to set benchmarks against our own past performance to push ourselves further. How the author leveraged his own setbacks to increase his own success.

It’s time to rethink the adage “there’s no ‘I’ in ‘team.’” Actually, the “I” represents influence, which all team members must embrace if they want their team to excel. Some would go so far as to say that influence is the most important facet of one’s personal and professional life. The influence even small actions have will create a ripple effect. Knowing this, we become more consciously aware of the influence we wish to project, which helps us to become the best version of ourselves and, by association, leads to the success of our teams.

In Our Polarized World, Is There Any Hope of Working Together?
This International Expert Says Yes!
Collaboration is hard, even in the best of times. Yet in our deeply polarized world, it’s become nearly impossible. According to the 2021 Edelman Trust Barometer, more than half of Americans—a full 57%—believe the U.S. is in a “cold civil war.” Worse, a May 2021 report reveals that fewer than 4 in 10 Americans feel there’s any real hope of us coming together. But working together to solve today’s most pressing issues doesn’t require us to agree as often or on as many matters as you’d think—or so says Adam Kahane, author-facilitator-expert at Reos Partners.
Join us to learn: • What the most contentious (and even dangerous) situations can teach us about effective collaboration • The single greatest challenge facilitators face—and how to successfully address it • Proven strategies anyone can use to bring people together to create a better world—at work, within organizations and alliances, in our schools, and in local communities

The importance of human connections to work satisfaction became evident during the past pandemic year of working remotely. As employers bring staff back into the office, they have an opportunity to build on those valued workplace relationships. Yet too often leaders reduce interactions with employees solely to measurements of their performance. As a result, many organizations feel sterile and void of passion.
In this week's episode, we talk with Zina Sutch, a leading development and diversity programs for the Federal government for 20 years, who currently serves in the Senior Executive Service. She is co author of: Leading with Love and Laughter: Letting Go and Getting Real at Work.
In this interview you will learn: » What leaders can do to allow themselves to let go and get real » Which leaders epitomize how to create nurturing, caring organizations » How to help teams come together, love one another and have fun

What You’ll Learn: THE IDEA: If you’re in a leadership role today, you surely didn’t get there by accident. You have vision. You’re confident. And you're ready to offer support and lightning-quick responses. But if you don’t effectively communicate these qualities to your people, how will they know you embody them? Frankly, they won’t. THE WHY: Despite leaders giving themselves gold stars in communication, only 13% of U.S. employees say their leaders communicate well, according to Gallup research. And that’s a colossal problem: 93% of workers surveyed by the Brunswick Group report that “leadership that communicates directly and transparently” is what keeps them on the job, bested only by pay and the ability to move up. Steve is the founder and managing partner of EmergeCounsel, LLC which represents and supports new, emerging and entrepreneurial businesses.
After years of experience as corporate counsel for a Fortune 100 company, Steve built and managed an educational technology startup where he was able to license intellectual property from a major research university, create and institute a protective intellectual property strategy, commercialize the resulting products and protect the intellectual property, build and manage a sales, marketing and operations team under a “lean startup” budget, and secure both angel and A round financing and finally negotiated an exit.
His combination of legal, entrepreneurial, governmental and corporate experience gives him a unique, focused perspective on what entrepreneurs who are starting up or emerging their businesses need but rarely have: a) someone who:zealously protects their interest and b) someone who has the empathy to understand each entrepreneur’s vision and motivation as well as their business plan. He can thus co-create and execute a legal plan to protect capital, company and intellectual property interests so you can succeed.

Join us for an insightful conversation about exit planning with Donald F. White.
If you aren’t planning for your succession far in advance of your actual exit, your health or — even worse, your mortality — could force an unplanned exit and all your years of hard work and dedication would depart with you. Too often, gifted entrepreneurs build practices not to succeed (the root of succession), but to cease (the root of cessation) after they exit. Without any backup plan, you have only a cessation plan.
When business owners become as intentional about their succession plan as they are about their business plan, they can experience a smooth closing of one chapter and the opening of another. By giving their exit the attention it deserves, everyone wins.
When creating a plan to Get Things Done there are competing strategies to consider.
Should you follow a MORE IS MORE approach by planning for HUGE MASSIVE ACTION, as outlined in Grant Cardone's The 10X Rule and 10 times the amount of action you believe needs to be taken in order to achieve your goal.
OR
Should you follow a LESS IS MORE approach as outlined in Gary Keller & Jay Papasan's The One Thing where you put laser focus on ONE THING starting small and scaling.

Despite significant investments in collecting data, most organizations struggle to get much value from it. This is not because of a lack of data. It’s a lack of a proper understanding of how decisions are made and communicated. The data may actually be making things worse.
While data can support decisions, it shouldn’t drive them. When companies rely too much on data, they ignore the importance of opinions and gut feelings. The goal is to make effective decisions rapidly. Anything that helps this goal is welcome; anything that hinders it needs to be removed.
Ruben Ugarte is founder of Practico Analytics, providing expertise in data analytics. He has worked with companies on five continents and in all company stages, helping them to use data to make higher quality decisions, boost performance, increase profitability and make their teams world-class. Business psychologist Dr. Roger Hall has one trick: he trains leaders to MONITOR and MANAGE their thinking.
Great leaders first learn how to MONITOR their thinking. If you don’t know what is going on in your head, you aren’t ever going to be able to manage it. Once leaders have learned to spot what is going on inside their heads, they can then MANAGE it. Successful people are first and foremost, disciplined thinkers. Yogi Berra was right. He said, “Ninety percent of baseball is mental. The other half is physical.” He may not have been great at math, but he was right about successful people. Successful, happy people discipline their thoughts.
Better thinking leads to better behavior, which leads to better results. Roger focuses his clients first on their thinking. Once that is lined up, the behavior follows pretty quickly and the improved results follow shortly after. Roger has worked with little companies with only a few people all the way up to big behemoths that dominate their industries. He likes working with people who want to become the best version of themselves.

In The Feeling Economy: How Artificial Intelligence Is Creating the Era of Empathy (Springer International Publishing; January 2021), Rust and Huang shed light on the reality of multiple AI intelligences and the stages of AI’s ongoing development. Backed by rigorous research, the authors share strategies to help business leaders, educators, and today’s workers prepare for careers, organizations, and a world in which AI and HI will collaborate closely—with AI doing more of the “brain” work and humans handling the “heart” work, including social interaction, emotion recognition, nuanced communication, and genuine care for customers.
Grounded in documented facts and real-world examples, not science fiction, The Feeling Economy offers a guide to the emerging future of “feeling jobs” and “relationalization” (personalization plus relationship).
You'll Learn:
How collaborating with thinking AI inevitably changes the nature of human jobs and what business leaders can do to keep up, starting with upgrading existing jobs—including financial analyst, immigration officer, bank teller, and physician—to emphasize people skills.
Why women have a natural advantage in the Feeling Economy—and how to support women’s rise to the top and encourage every woman to leverage her “soft” skills and people-oriented strengths without reinforcing gender stereotypes or discrimination.
How thinking AI is changing consumers—from their product expectations to their everyday life—and how to tailor sales, marketing, and service to meet the needs of emotionally-driven buyers.
How the coronavirus pandemic is likely to lead to an increased use of AI by everyone—for health, business, and personal reasons—while simultaneously reinforcing the need for all humans to be even more empathetic with each other.

Far too many businesses do a poor job of translating their well-formulated strategies into their anticipated results. Whether related to unclear goals, lack of accountability or undertaking activities irrelevant to results, the inability to deliver comes from poor execution.
To actively manage your organization so that everyone is working toward a common vision, strategy and set of priorities requires aligning “seven gears of execution” to alleviate the friction that’s slowing you down. These involve ensuring you have the right people in the right roles with the right capabilities; you align your organizational architecture in the direction of your strategy; you promote a culture of communication; and more.
Sean Ryan is a world-renowned business consultant, speaker, trainer and executive coach, and is founder of Whitewater International Consulting. His new book is Get In Gear: The Seven Gears that Drive Strategy to Results.
