Dear Mom Genes,
I am currently pregnant with my third kid and I am noticing the different challenges that this pregnancy has vs. the past pregnancies. I hear everyone talking about the importance of self care during pregnancy, but honestly I don’t have time. How is this even possible? What does self care look like when your life doesn’t feel like yours anymore? What if I am upset with my body, because it is in pain and is sore and tired? I need your advice. Thank you! Dear Mom Genes,
I have struggled with being overwhelmed, exhausted, and feeling stuck in my new phase as a mom with two young children. I feel like the world is passing me by and each day I am just trying to survive. I want to learn to thrive, but the things that will make me feel alive are the self care hobbies (I miss my book club), activities (I miss yoga), and behaviors (I just want to sleep and cook a decent meal!) just don’t feel feasible. How can I practice self care even while I am struggling with what is probably postpartum depression? Love, Exhausted Mama

This week we are chatting about life after chronic dieting. When we let go of the routine, rules, and structure that diet culture offers as a safety net for eating, we are often faced with the unknown of how to be a mindful eater. We know that diet culture is toxic and the rules ignored our body attunement, but how do we switch gears? Especially when dieting has offered us reliability in an unreliable life. We share tips for mindful eating, offer journal prompts to explore the fears of letting go of dieting, and how to let go of control over our bodies to find body trust.
Our amazing listeners also wrote in and in this episode we will answer the following question:
Dear Mom Genes,
I am over it! I have dieted for, literally, my entire life. I was put on a diet by my parents as a kid and have just continued that cycle throughout my entire adult hood. Now that I have given up on dieting I feel lost and very scared about the unknown as well as what my future holds. Am I capable of doing life without dieting? One of the main reasons that I am rejecting dieting is for my kids, because I don’t want them to grow up with the same lifestyle that I had, but I feel pretty lost. What is next? HELP! In this week’s episode we elaborate on the type of hunger that is labeled “emotional eating” and help you define your understanding of what this entails and how to increase your awareness around emotional urges to eat. We give tips on how to separate out food and feelings and when using food as a coping skill is normal versus problematic. We explore the beauty that food offers through pleasure and connection and why emotional eating has increased during the pandemic. We believe that emotional hunger is a biologically normal hunger and that food is a beautiful gift, and we hope that the education surrounding this topic in this episode helps you find peace and enjoy food freedom.
Our amazing listeners also wrote in and in this episode we will answer the following question:
Dear Mom Genes,
I am really confused on the definition of emotional eating. I feel like people demonize this term, but I also don’t want to be doing it wrong. If I am eating because I am sad or lonely, is that wrong? Or what about if I am celebrating a holiday or birthday with my kids? Can I eat the cake even if I am not hungry? I feel like there is a lot of negativity around emotional eating and that we shouldn’t be doing it or else we are not doing intuitive eating correctly. Can you elaborate? Thanks for your help, Emotional Mama.

Did you know there is more than just one simple “hunger” that we experience? In this episode we explore three types of hunger: physical, logical, and emotional. We explain each type, give examples of how this may appear, and give you tips on how to be more in attunement with the type of hunger you may be experiencing. We encourage curiosity and mindfulness as you navigate understanding your bodies cues and give education on how to increase your non judgemental stance towards your hunger.

Dear Mom Genes,
I am learning so much about how to listen to my body’s signals to finally break the diet cycle. I’m more in touch with my hunger cues, learning to understand when I feel full, and even aware when I’m wanting a snack when I’m feeling bored or sad instead of hungry. But I still have times when I get a little confused if what I’m feeling is physical hunger, if I’m just in the mood for a certain food, or if it’s emotional eating. Can you give more details on the types of hunger so I can keep learning to differentiate? Love, Hungry Parent

We interview Deanna Belleny Lewis, MPH RDN about how her work in public health and her passion about diversifying the field of nutrition has led her to debunking myths about healthy eating. Deanna shares her definition of health and how she helps clients navigate finding a relationship with nutrition that works for them, regardless of resources and finances. Dear Mom Genes,
Thank you for all you are doing and for providing the information and education you have thus far. Though I feel inspired by your mom bod messaging I am conflicted about some of the food information you are providing. I do believe in ‘providing variety for my family’ and having ‘everything in moderation’ however; I do want to eat healthy and take care of my body. That being said, the information that is available out there about healthy eating is so confusing. I’m worried that if I follow what the internet is saying my family will be super limited. But I also don’t always trust what is in all foods. Can you provide some insight into what healthy eating actually is? Thanks for your help! Mama Greenie

We are exploring how diet culture has hijacked this term and the glorification of restriction in our culture makes it easy to jump on the elimination band wagon without doing the proper medical or psychological evaluation needed to determine what is best for your body. We give you reflection questions to ask yourself before experimenting with elimination diets or testing out gut health myths from both a dietary and psychological angle.

In this week’s part 1 episode of “Does My Child Have an Eating Disorder?,” we discuss the nature vs nurture of the development of eating disorders or a disorder relationship with food and bodies. We explore how food can be a coping skill that is learned and genetic, the pressures that we receive from the world that can impact our relationship with food, and we discuss why eating disorders have increased during the pandemic. We offer tangible ways of breaking the diet legacy in the home and how parents can provide a safe home that is preventative to the nurturance of an eating disorder. We give parents tools on how to connect with their child by understanding their underlying emotional needs through reflective questioning and listening.

In the Division of Responsibility a parents chooses: the “what,” the “when, and the “where” while the child chooses the “if” and “how much.” Keira identifies how this can look in real life settings and the challenges that occur in the division.

The “Myth Busters” Series
In this week’s episode we are chatting all about kids and nutrition by busting the myth that “kids today aren’t eating enough healthy foods.” As Mom’s ourselves, we know that one of the biggest stressors on parents today is how to feed their children so we are explaining the psychology behind this fear and pressure and interviewing the RD’s of Sunny Side Up Nutrition, Anna Lutz, MPH, RDN, LD and Elizabeth Davenport, MPH, RDN, LD @sunnysideupnutrition.
Feeding our children becomes our primary goal as soon as the child is born, so it is natural that parenting begins with this obsession of how, what, and how much our children are eating. Feeding our baby is also a form of attachment bonding for both the child and parent and a parental instinct absolutely takes over when we suddenly become insanely preoccupied with our children’s input and output (remember having to track number of wet diapers in the hospital??) This natural, survival instinct ignited in parents combined with a culture obsessed with health and beauty and longevity, makes the perfect recipe for wanting to be perfect in how we feed our children. We find that this fear is mostly from the parents worried that they are not doing a good job or are projecting their own insecurities about food or their body onto their kids. So as a result, they pressure their child to eat a certain amount, eat specific foods, disregard their internal cues and preferences and monitor their bodies. What we are hoping for parents to get out of this episode today is trust. Trust in yourselves as parents, but mainly trust in your children.

The “Myth Busters” Series
In this week’s episode we are switching gears from busting myths about adult bodies and chatting about kids bodies by busting the myth...that “kids today aren’t healthy!” This myth is one that most parents are so confused by: are their kids healthy? Is the food we are feeding our kids nourishing them? Are kids today too sedentary? Should parents be DOING something about their kids health?
This is obviously a complicated myth to completely pull apart with multiple layers about the food industry, weight and BMI, and the overarching concept of health, so we touch on all of these but focus on how this myth has narrowed pediatric health to just diet and exercise. We are going to give you a brief history of this myth’s origins and then we are interviewing a passionate myth buster on kids health: Virginia Sole-Smith, author of The Eating Instinct and the newsletter Burnt Toast. A healthy child is more than the number on the scale: it is a child who can be in their body with confidence and self-respect, regardless of their abilities, size, race, or socioeconomic status.

The “Myth Busters” Series
While we love chatting about the more generalized diet culture messaging, our clinical work and passion is in the treatment of Eating Disorders. We are passionate about helping bust stereotypes of Eating Disorders in order to help all people get the care they deserve and help providers become more proficient in their treatment approaches. The myth we are busting in this week’s episode is “eating disorders only happen to thin white women” and interviewing psychotherapist Nichomi Higgins, LMFT for further exploration of the harm perpetuated by this myth in society and treatment settings.
We are taking a look at how healthism is rooted in white supremacy and how this white centered definition of health and nutrition is harmful due to its lack of awareness of all cultural food beliefs and by the definition of what is a disordered relationship with food. Eating Disorders occurs in everyone b/c everyone has to have a relationship with food to survive. This, in addition to a diet culture centered in the definition of the white beauty ideal as well as a society rooted in racism and oppression of so many bodies, perpetuates a complex relationship with food. For more on the nuanced ways that this is expressed in our society as well as in treatment center care, check out this week’s episode.

There is no body liberation and acceptance without all bodies being free to exist without prejudice, so anti-racism, and acknowledging the privileges you hold, are crucial topics to always be centered in the body acceptance conversation. Today’s myth that we are busting is “there is no hierarchy of bodies,” or the thought that, even if there is, “I am colorblind and I accept all bodies.”
Now, we are two white podcast host’s so we acknowledge that our white privilege and lack of lived experience of being on the receiving end of racism definitely does not render us able to cover this topic effectively. So we are honored and thrilled to have our guest, Christyna Johnson, RD @encouragingRD join us to bust this myth! We highlighted the concept of how colorblindness and denial of inherent racism have continued to allow people to ignore racial discrimination, which continues to harm and impact people experiencing both macro and microaggressions as a result of the color of their skin. We explored how this impacts the interpretations of health, nutrition, and beauty on systemic and individual levels as well as how providers in the medical and mental health fields can be improve their care through unlearning and listening.

The “Myth Busters” Series
Oh, exercise. It’s kind of a curse word we mutter at times, and other times it’s a declaration of self care. We all have a complicated relationship with exercise thanks to an appearance obsessed culture, so today’s myth that we are busting is: “Exercise is for weight loss! So, If I’m not going to lose weight, I don’t want to exercise!” So we are going to chat a little bit about how we hear this myth express itself and then we are welcoming body positive fitness instructor Holly Max @fatbarrebabe to help us bust this myth even more!
Since guilt and shame are common themes in all of the most commonly expressed myths about exercise, we knew we had to help bust this myth by neutralizing exercise, or joyful movement as we prefer to call it, so that we can get it back to the root. Exercise is a celebration of your body, not a punishment or a way to change your body. By shifting the goal from external change to internal motivation of mental health clarity or de-stress or, gasp, FUN, we lose any expectations on ourselves and allow movement to connect us to ourselves. If that sounds challenging, then listen to this episode where we explain how to do this and give you journal prompts for further exploration.

The "Myth Busters Series"
In this episode we are busting a myth about how pervasive the beauty industry is and how it can impact our relationship with our bodies and our self worth. We do a lot of episodes on busting myths about diets or food rules, but what about all those fancy words like “wellness industry?” and “but it’s a lifestyle change?” as well as all the products we are constantly being sold to change our appearance. So this week we are busting the myth that “we are not selling beauty products, we are selling a lifestyle change!”
While the diet industry can be easy to spot due to its primary focus being weight loss, the wellness or lifestyle industry is extremely varied: it includes lotions, face products, makeup, fitness clothes, vitamins, supplements, and the list goes on. As we navigate people’s MLM pitches, influencer’s product advertisements, or pop up ads on social media, with the underlying message that using their products will buy you a level of health and wellbeing, the difficult part to discern is what is true and what is not? What is fake advertising, what is new found science, and do we even need any of these products? Is the bottom line messaging of the wellness industry the same as the diet industry in that we live in a culture obsessed with beauty, bodies, sexuality, and appearance and whether it’s a diet or a face cream, they are all selling the same thing: change your body, feel better. We are excited to be taking a closer look at this entire industry with the host of the “Your Body, Your Brand” podcast Kai Prins and ponder whether or not the wellness and beauty industry are really all that different from the diet industry?

The "Myth Busters" Series
A part of body acceptance (especially for Mom’s) is grappling with wondering if we are sexy or attractive and feeling confident in our bodies as sexual beings. So the myth we are busting in this week’s episode is “I cannot be sexually confident if I am not body confident.” We truly believe that all bodies are sexy BUT we also believe that to feel sexy or to be sexually confident isn’t actually about your body at all - it’s much more about a general sense of body attunement, knowing your body's needs and wants, and having radical body liberation and body neutrality. So we are going to share our thoughts on this myth and then we are interviewing Amber Allen, LMFT.
We believe that body image starts in the mind, not the body. Therefore, when we are able to heal from the negative societal messaging that we have internalized about our bodies, we are able to be more mindful about what feels best for us and attuned with not only our bodies but our partners bodies and the connection, as well. A journal prompt that we encourage you to consider as you navigate healing your body attunement in this area is “what are the values of beauty that I need to continue to release in order to become more body positive about my sexual body?”

The "Myth Busters" Series
The impact of stigmatization and discrimination on one’s body trust and body attunement is significant, which is why continuing to dismantle body hierarchies in our society must be at the foundation of the body positive movement. When one is navigating our society in their gender identity or sexuality, a relationship with one’s body and food intake can be impacted. We are passionate about busting myths so that all bodies can be safe to exist in this world, so this week we are busting the myth that…. “cisgender is the gender norm and the typical family system is a heterosexual household.”
Discrimination, confusion, shame placed on us by others, and bullying all impact our nervous system. As you will hear in our interview this episode with Neathery Falchuk, LCSW, CGP @ampleandrooted, this assault to the nervous system can impact one’s ability to be a mindful eater. Neathery discusses the importance of a sense of connectedness and belonging which helps calm our nervous systems, offers a safe space for our bodies to exist, and has a direct correlation on our relationship with food and movement. We encourage all of you listening to continue to receive education on what it means to be an LGBTQ+ ally, connect with organizations or communities that support the mental health and physical protection of this community, and make your home a safe space for ALL bodies.

The "Myth Busters" Series
In this episode we are talking about all the myths surrounding pregnancy and weight gain because, let’s face it, once you become pregnant - your body suddenly becomes open to LOTS of discussion from other people. It’s the cultural norm, in America at least, that pregnancy and weight gain go hand in hand in multiple conversations. How much you should gain, how quickly you lose it, how quickly you get that pre baby body back - the pressure is on in our diet culture. So the myth we are busting today is…….”everyone should gain the recommended weight range during pregnancy!”
We will give you our thoughts on the origins of this myth and then we are excited to welcome Lynette Broom, RD to help us explore how narrowing a healthy pregnancy down to weight gain ignores the fact that all bodies are susceptible to complications from conception to post birth due to genetic factors or other health measures such as access to resources, prenatal care, support during childbirth, and mental health. And yet, our typical diet culture narrows all of these factors down to how many pounds you gain as your baby grows inside of you. This is harmful and anxiety producing for any parent to be. We want all parents to feel empowered to advocate for themselves and define health by what works for them so we hope this episode is a great tool for that process.

The “Myth Busters” Series
Since 95% of dieters will regain the weight in 3-5 years, a stat thrown around often, why do people still fall for diet pitfalls? Let’s face it, when people see the captivating “success stories” on commercials, hear their friends talk about how many inches they lost, or get an ad for a new gym membership challenge, people often secretly wonder if this will finally be the answer to body satisfaction. So today….we are busting the myth that “diets are effective for permanent weight loss.”
In this episode we cover both the nutrition science and the psychology of why diets may work short term for weight loss BUT why diets don’t work long term. We also interview the fabulous Dalina Soto, RD to discuss the physical and psychological harm of dieting as well as the harm that white beauty and nutrition standards have on non-white cultures and races. If you are feeling tempted by another ad, image, or challenge we highly suggest you listen to this episode to dive deeper into what exactly you may be tempted by emotionally and the physical repercussions that will occur from the fad diet.

The “Myth Busters” Series
This week we are diving into why the commonly used BMI scale is outdated and harmful by busting the myth that “the BMI is an effective measuring tool for health.” We cover the history of the Body Mass Index (BMI), which was created 200 years ago by studying a small group of white European men and then creating a tool that measured fit ness in order to categorize the population and prove that white males were a superior species during the height of race science.
In this episode, we go deeper into the history of the BMI creation, it’s racist roots, and explain how it became mainstream in our society today. We interview social and health psychologist Dr Jeffrey Hunger on how the BMI scale and weight stigma negatively impact people. We offer tools for families to use in their home to decrease weight stigma and ways to advocate for yourself and your children at the doctor’s office if BMI and weight is a focus of the medical care. The bottom line is that BMI was never intended as a measure of individual body fat, build, or health (or be inclusive to different genders and races).

The "Myth Busters" Series
Today we are unpacking the concept of healing a relationship with food and finding peace with food and your body by looking at anti diet messages from an angle of accessibility. There is no body liberation until all bodies are safe and there is no food freedom until all bodies are fed and nourished equally. Therefore, the myth we are busting in this week’s episode is: “healing one’s relationship with food simply means healing from diet culture and learning to honor your body.” It is imperative that the work in the eating disorder field and anti diet space always unpacks the limitations that so many face in their access to food, shines a light on food accessibility, and calls out the racism that is inherent in diet culture.
We are honored to welcome Shelby Gordon @fit.flexible.fluid to this episode and help us discuss how simplifying anyone’s relationship to food - both from a fad diet perspective of “try this and you will lose weight,” to the anti diet perspective of “just honor your hunger and cravings” is a massive disservice to everyone who is learning their own, unique relationship with their body and food in a society with unequal access to food and a diet culture based on racist beauty ideals. Healing a relationship with food needs a community angle: feeding one another, providing for one another, honoring one another’s needs and perspectives, changing the societal messaging, offering access to resources to all, and shifting from a capitalistic, individualistic perspective to a communal one is where true healing will occur.

The “Myth Busters” Series
This week we spent an entire episode on the term “intuitive eating.” We know it is quite the buzzword in the anti diet world today and is frequently used (and misused) on social media, so in this episode we are busting some of the common myths we hear about intuitive eating such as: “Intuitive eating means eat whatever I want, whenever I want it,” “If I give myself unconditional permission to eat, I will never stop,” and “Habituation means to binge on the food until I’m sick of it.”
We are going to give you the official definition of intuitive eating from the book by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, give you a brief summary of the original message of intuitive eating and principles associated, and discuss how fear based thinking drives these myths.
We are honored to have the amazing co-author herself, Evelyn Tribole, join us this week to bust these myths with us and remind us about how a relationship with food and a releasing of diet culture messaging and body fears is a key component to making peace with food! Evelyn also speaks to parents on how to avoid power struggles at the table and how to heal the family diet legacy by embracing the belief that “all bodies are worthy of dignity and respect, we don’t gossip about bodies and the same with food. We don’t denigrate foods and we don’t reify them” (Evelyn Tribole, Ep. 48). If there are any questions you have about how to become, and raise, intuitive eaters, this episode is for you!

Today we are going to be giving some love to an often exiled food group - sugar. Poor sugar...it is cursed at, drooled over, bemoaned, and craved. It never gets the neutral love that it so deserves! And the reason why is exactly the myth we are busting today, which is…….”eating sugar is unhealthy for you.”
In this episode we do a brief history lesson on how sugar has been viewed throughout time, address the myths about sugar addiction, and discuss how the diet mentality of labeling sugar as bad impacts us physically and psychologically. We also interview the super fun co-hosts of the Let Us Eat Cake podcast, Hannah Robinson, RD and Ali Eberhardt, RD about the differences in types of sugar, how our brains react to sugar, and how to find peace in our relationship with this culturally scorned but scrumptious food!

The “Myth Busters” Series
Today we are busting the age old diet myth that in order to manage your weight it’s a simple math equation of “calories in vs calories out,” or calories expended. The reason this myth is so popular is because it gives people a sense of control. By counting, calculating, tracking, and monitoring: BAM, the solution will be what they desire. The marketers sell the apps, the memberships, the programs by saying “come join us and we will make something complex more simple so you can find control since your relationship with food is confusing and chaotic.” But there are some major flaws in this approach that we unpack in this episode. We review the history of the word “calorie” and it’s origins in the field of industrial agriculture, explain metabolic compensation as well as what to do about food labels. We interview Vincci Tsui, RD @vinccird and she unpacks the science behind why calories work in a lab setting but do not translate to our bodies in simple math! Our bodies are not science experiments and food freedom means letting go of external factors of calorie counting and numbers!

The “Myth Busters” Series
This week we are busting the myth that “our bodies are supposed to stay the same weight, post puberty, throughout our whole life.” While this myth may seem easy to bust, it is extremely common to have the subconscious belief that our ideal body was in a previous tier of our lives. This belief leads us to treat our bodies as enemies that have betrayed us and keep us from true body acceptance. In this episode, we offer education on what happens to our height, weight and shape during puberty as well as in the life tiers that follow. We share from a dietetic and a therapeutic perspective on how we help our clients navigate busting this myth for themselves by sharing our philosophies on the changing body throughout the lifespan. Embracing change, challenging cultural messages and socially constructed body hierarchies, and celebrating the cycle of life by embracing our bodily changes is where true freedom, and appreciation for the human form, lie.

The “Your Story” Series
In our last episode of this "Your Story" series, we are excited to be sharing with you all a passionate conversation we had with Ivy Hsu, actress and nurse, that really showcases that healing one’s body physically and healing from our sick diet culture is possible. Ivy will share her story of being in the entertainment industry as a young adult and the horrific pressure she received while working, but then about the hope and healing that came as she gave herself permission to be free to be herself and became a Mom.
From the unique southern culture of Texas to the entertainment industry of Taiwan, diet culture continues to have intense support of thin bodies, prioritize restriction over nourishment, and preach that “thinner is better.” Ivy’s story highlights how external pressures in our society greatly impacts body attunement both mentally and medically. Values and beliefs about food and bodies are pervasive across the globe. No matter the country you live in or culture you are surrounded by, we hope that creating compassion for your body and identifying the values you want for yourself and your family will help you heal.
Highlighting other’s stories can bring to light the pressures that that person is feeling and maybe somewhere, someone is listening and can relate, be motivated for change, and be inspired to rewrite their family and cultural legacy. We hope that from this series of stories that you feel inspired to do the same.

This week we are excited to be shifting our story narratives from parents to a daughter! Tershone Phillips, host of “The Right Mistake Podcast,” is joining us to share how her body image was challenged at the pivotal tween years and the protective measures that her parents took to help her maintain her confidence. We know parents can’t solve or control everything, as much as we wish we could, but we love the perspective of what we can try our best to accomplish in the home environment to raise confident kids inside and out.
Where we are raised can greatly impact our body story, as we discuss this week, due to the sub cultures that vary from community to community. We are grateful for our listeners from all over the world and, as you all listen along with us this Season and rewrite your body story, our journal prompt for you is this: how was where you were raised, where you currently live, and the sub cultures that come along with your geographic locations, contribute to your lived experience in your body?
No matter where you live, as parents it will be crucial to attempt, to our best abilities, to have our children exposed to various places and people to build kindness and awareness of diverse body sizes and shapes, races and ethnicities, religions and cultures. We are excited to hear Tershone chat today about her story, how her parents were a support to her, and give some great insight to us listeners who are parents about how we can keep our kids focused on what really matters!

Today we are welcoming Mom and advocate Mia O’Malley, who shares her story of a lifetime of dealing with fatphobia and body sized stigmas in the medical community and from loved ones from a young age. We are passionate about not only helping parents navigate body acceptance for themselves but also teaching them how to help their children find body acceptance so another generation is not impacted from weight stigma and body shaming.
We hope that hearing Mia’s story allows people to see the long term journey of healing that occurs when children’s body trust is interrupted and how painful that is. We also love Mia’s story of hope and how her healing actually began once she reached that “promised land of thinness” at her wedding, only to realize that it wasn't so idyllic after all. And now she has turned her story into advocacy for plus size Mom’s through fashion, positive birth experiences, and plus size babywearing. We hope this inspires many of you to learn to love and trust your body at any age, no matter what your childhood experience is. Healing is possible!

The “Your Story” Series
In this week's episode with Isis Freeman-Dirkson we discuss how the many layers of who we are, in addition to the lived experiences we have due to social constructs, can impact our body trust. We explore the power in healing our body image through logical thinking of understanding our body’s genetic components and the lies of the media BUT….healing the trauma in the body is so hard.
We discuss a concept called Wise Mind that is taught in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, which is a therapeutic modality that teaches skills on how to handle tough emotions with less reactivity. DBT teaches that there are two parts of our brains: the logical side (the facts of a situation) and the emotional side (the feelings, assumptions, and fears arise from a situation).
We find peace when we merge the two - we acknowledge our pain and our suffering AND we hold on to the knowledge of our genetic blueprint or life experiences that have impacted our body. It’s a constant merging of both facts and feelings so our brains and our bodies begin to work in unison to heal.
Your journal prompts for this week: What are the facts about fatphobia, weight stigma, our genetic makeup, societal expectations, family messages that are held in our brains? What are the emotions about how all those facts make us feel, the judgemental comments we have received, the beliefs we have about ourselves as a result of trauma or discrimination?

The “Your Story” Series
Today we are excited to welcome Vanessa Linn Hillis and hear their story of body acceptance or, as they bring up, the concept of body neutrality. This interview really dives into the many social constructs, especially gender ones, that impact our body story. We are all born as just bodies and souls and then social constructs, opinions of others, fears and skewed values from loved ones, all impact our awareness of our bodies and the development of our relationship with our bodies. Vanessa’s story highlights how commonplace it is for those assigned female at birth to have a negative body image and to participate in disparaging conversations with other females about our bodies, which confuses us in our pursuit of body neutrality, body trust, and appropriate separation from our body as our entire identity.
On the surface, it might seem as if one’s relationship with food and exploration of their gender identity seem unconnected, but, as you will hear Vanessa share, the nuanced connection is one that needs to be studied more and spoken of more often. Overall, the discomfort one feels of being in one’s body can come from a variety of sources and healing this discomfort comes from exactly what we are discussing this season: how one’s body story was developed and what steps they are taking to rewrite the story in a preferred narrative that makes them feel empowered, free, and the author of the story.

Today we are stoked to hear from Julia Parzyck, an eating disorder recovery coach and body-acceptance influencer @fitfatandallthat, who joined us to share her story of healing and touch on the important piece of healing that includes putting a critical eye towards the wellness industry, diet culture, and redefining the term “healthy.”
Many people think that those in the anti diet world over analyze language and that don’t promote health - but what people fail to understand is that we are SO passionate about health. What we truly want to critique and overanalyze is how the subtle comments about our bodies and others bodies, about good foods and bad foods, about healthy weight vs unhealthy weight, and about simplifying healthy to really mean skinny absolutely destroys the key foundation to health. The true foundation of health is decreased body shame, flexibility with food, awareness of our unique genetic makeup, and realizing that our bodies are just a vehicle to our souls. If our souls cannot freely fly because they are weighed down by our insecurities and obsession with our appearance, then we are not healthy.
As you listen to Julia’s story, and as you navigate healing your body, try to keep this reflection prompt in mind: what piece of your food or fitness routine do you need to take a critical, anti diet lens to in order to explore your intentions and cultural messaging?

Today we are chatting with Dubhe Ferrer about how to channel positive thinking and challenge both familial and societal stereotypes. So often in our discussions with people, we hear them say “I want to be body positive, but how?”
It takes a great UNLEARNING and RELEARNING to help us find body positivity, so surrounding yourself with affirmations, watching who you follow on social media, reading books that educate you on the systemic oppression that fuels diet culture, and being mindful of your conversations are all tools toward helping with the relearning process. If you find your biggest obstacle in finding body positivity is feeling you or your body doesn’t DESERVE that, then finding help from a professional can help you with uncovering the roots of your self worth.
While body positivity is a trendy term these days, it may seem overwhelming to try to learn to love your body, so we want to introduce you to a concept called body neutrality. In short, body neutrality is rooted in acknowledging what your body does, not how it appears. This is where we challenge you to try to have grace for your genetics and body story by acknowledging the strengths your body has as well as the experiences it has been through and move about the world in a way that brings you joy.

In this week’s episode we are honored to hear from Kylie Mitchell, a non-diet dietitian over @immaeatthat who helps make eating and being in your body less complicated. In this episode we discuss one of the big misconceptions that we hear about intuitive eating and body acceptance, which is that intuitive eating means you can eat whatever you want and not care about your body. The reason why this myth pops up is because it seems to be the opposite of diet culture messaging, when really intuitive eating is all about self care, body attunement and the nuanced pieces of gentle nutrition and joyful movement.
We define self-care as a whole body experience that includes honoring your physical, emotional, and mental needs. This means that sometimes your body wants veggies and sometimes it just wants ice cream, sometimes your body craves movement in a variety of ways, and sometimes it craves rest to heal and recuperate - and all are great options for self care.
As you listen to Kylie’s story, and as you navigate healing your body, try to keep this reflection prompt in mind: how do I learn to take care of my body and listen to it so I can feel truly at home in it?

The "Your Story" Series
In this week’s episode we are being joined by a mother daughter team! Dr Lesley Williams and her 9 year old daughter Leyla discuss the book that was written by Dr Williams after her daughter’s experience with body shaming at school.
As you know, this season’s theme is “Your Story” and we are excited about the angle of this episode because we are hearing two stories in this interview. We get to hear Leyla’s body story that she has already begun to write in her short life as well as hear the story from a Mama’s perspective about what it is like to watch her daughter’s story unfold. It brings to light the importance of having a home environment that is inclusive, that discusses bullying, confidence, race, and cultural narratives in age appropriate ways, and yet we touched on how there is still a bigger, badder, world out there that will impact our children regardless of the environment we create at home.
A big piece of this story for us as parents is learning how to love on our littlest ones and guide them to the best of our ability, but knowing that we cannot protect them for everything, just to prepare them. As Dr William’s book is called, “Free to Be Me,” we hope that this next generation is even more free to be themselves than previous generations and that society continues to heal in so many ways.

The “Your Story” Series
We are excited about today’s interview with Sandra Olinger, who is both a music and Mom blogger, as she chats about body image and her Latina heritage. Our conversation really brought home the idea that “body image starts in the mind, not the body.” Body image is a mental exploration of how we view ourselves and healing comes not from external change or validation, but from internal dialogue, self perception, and acceptance of our genes with a g and jeans with a j.
Doing this work of healing our body story, exploring the layers of societal messaging, racism, fatphobia, and family messaging is so important to understanding the influences on our body image so we can reframe and heal. While we know that the power of positive thinking doesn’t change an entire system of injustice, sharing our stories and doing the healing work internally focuses on the only thing we CAN change: our perception of ourselves and our internal narrative.
This hard, but necessary work, leads to living with more freedom with our relationship with food, our relationship with movement, and our activities of daily living. Learning how to have body positivity, or at least body neutrality, is a key component to our mental health and will help us answer the tough questions that our children ask as they grow up and notice others’ bodies and hear the confusing messages about health and nutrition in schools and in our judgemental society.

The “Your Story” Series
This week we are sharing the story of Jen McLellan, known for her work in advocacy for plus size birth. We discuss this week how the stigmas that those in larger bodies receive in health care, and the lack of willingness from medical providers to see plus size bodies as beautiful, strong, worthy and equal to other bodies, leads to an increase in poor medical care. This can range from inappropriate touch, exaggerating statistics of high risk, making inappropriate recommendations of weight loss due to the doctor’s own bias or denial of natural childbirth.
Our theme in this season is understanding how our internal dialogue and core beliefs impact our body image and body story and we love how Jen spoke on this in her interview this week by sharing how she first had to own the mantra “I am worthy of good health care” in order to then advocate for herself to find and receive the health care that respected her body. This is such an important point to make because healing our relationship with our bodies always has two parts: one is personal and the other is societal.
While our podcast, Jen’s podcast, and so much of the #bodypositivity on social media is aimed towards healing society, we know that that is a huge mountain to climb. And so, the healing that comes from within is the ultimate first step. Do YOU believe you are worthy, that your body is worthy of care, and that you are worthy of being an amazing Mom, no matter what your body looks like? Phew, those are your journal prompts for this week and we hope that listening to Jen’s story will inspire you in your process!

The “Your Story” Series
Welcome back to Season 2 of Mom Genes! This season we are opening up the platform for those that are feeling inspired to share their stories. As clinicians who have sat with hundreds of clients in a sacred space of vulnerability and doing challenging work in their healing process, we know that every single individual’s experience, definition of recovery, and journey of finding food freedom is unique as well. We are so passionate about this field of work and this season because we know that the power of sharing one’s story can be a beautiful step towards deeper healing.
Before we launch our season of personal stories, we wanted to bring on an expert in a therapeutic technique called Narrative Therapy. This method of therapy is powerful in helping people deconstruct the discourses and problems they might face in order to construct their new preferred story and we thought our listeners may want to hear from a therapist who practices primarily from this form of psychotherapy so they can understand the power in their thoughts, narratives, and story telling.
Today we are welcoming Amber Kramer, AMFT who, as a narrative therapist, approaches therapy through a collaborative and non pathologizing lens where the client is the expert in their own life. Check out our show notes for journal prompts so you can join us this season in writing your body story and finding healing!

We wanted to dedicate a short episode to our listeners to say a big thank you from the bottom of our hearts and send you into summer with a massive cheer: WEAR THE BATHING SUIT!!
We know that most of the body positive, “wear the bathing suit” advocates are usually white women in thinner bodies - and that is not exactly helpful or reassuring for the vast majority of people who are living in marginalized bodies in a judgemental world. The reason why we still encourage bathing suit wearing, joyful moving, community gathering summer activities is because being connected to our bodies and each other is where true freedom in life lies. It is a privilege to enjoy activities that require bathing suits, so keeping our privileges in mind will help keep perspective when diet culture and societal norms start screaming otherwise.
In this week’s episode we share the definition of body liberation by Jes Baker @themilitantbaker and give 3 quick tips to help Mom’s enter summer with body liberation.
Our last takeaway challenge for you is this: put on the suit, enjoy your family, and take the photo. Please don’t forget to tag us on social media (oh and use one of our fun GIF’s by searching for “Mom Genes” in the search bar) and share an episode with a friend to keep the love (and listens) flowing this summer!

How many of you Mom’s are self-conscious of your stomach? Society loves to sell us the appeal of a flat stomach from a very young age, which makes belly acceptance a piece of body acceptance. Not only do our bellies soften as we age but our skin loses flexibility and, if we became Moms via pregnancy, our stomach has gone through some crazy changes!
In this week’s episode we are going to discuss your belly from the outside, in - what you can see in your jeans and, if those jeans fit differently, how you can practice self-care and body acceptance. We cover four common concerns that people have with the external appearance of their changed belly and the science behind those visual changes:
We also interview Jasmin Steiner, self love advocate and personal trainer, on how she has learned to accept her changed belly by decreasing the value she put on her body’s appearance. She shares how she had to release her subconscious belief of her body being her contribution to society by realizing that she was “more than her body.”
Our takeaway question is: If genetics hasn’t given you a flat stomach, then I want you to consider WHY you value that, where that message comes from, and what you are giving up in exchange for living in dissatisfaction with your belly.

In today’s episode we focus on the genes (the internal, genetic components) of belly acceptance and education. Our society blatantly sells women’s attractiveness in the form of a flawless, flat stomach with just a touch of abs and anything less than that is immediately sold ab workouts, one piece ruched bathing suits, and mom jeans. A significant piece of breaking the stigma of the Mom bod is accepting the softened abdomen. We cover four common concerns many people have with their bellies and give education and tips of what to do next! The four areas we discuss are:
This episode is stock full of information and specific tips of how to heal your belly from the inside out. Culture and the “wellness culture” love to offer us fear filled stats about belly fat and it’s harm. As we discuss these facts, we hold the Health At Every
Size mentality while offering biological information about abdominal fat to help you understand your body and the TRUE definition of health. As always, body acceptance (or in this case, belly acceptance) is at the forefront of our talk and we encourage our listeners to love the skin you're in!

We wanted to offer a space for three different Mom’s with various backgrounds and recovery journeys to share their story and honestly discuss how becoming a Mom added another layer to their recovery process. We are grateful for their vulnerability, their strength, and their courage as they navigate busting diet myths, letting go of body image ideals, coping with their feelings without using food, and showing up to their recovery day in and day out!
In Part 3 we welcome a Mama of one who has jumped through many hurdles in her recovery journey and, through these hurdles, has found true peace. She shares her history of body image challenges based on her family legacy and how she found healing and is now fully recovered Mom of one!

In this episode we talk about recovery from disordered eating and diet culture through the lens of unearned privilege. Healing requires access to resources of finances, time, insurance, and community support which can be challenging for many humans and an obstacle to achieving recovery and food freedom. We unpack the stereotypes of eating disorders as well as identify how stigmatizations and lack of privilege impede the identification of the need for help and the ability to access help as well as increase isolation for those suffering. We also interview Gloria Lucas, founder of Nalgona Positivity Pride, on how she came into her work of creating a platform and resources for people of color who are struggling with troubled eating, poor body-image, and access to services due to low-income. No person is exempt from cultural pressures and all people need to explore their relationship with food, so this episode is an important reminder that everyone has a story.

In this episode we are discussing how negative body image is affecting kids younger and younger. In a study done by “The Confidence Code,” girls’ confidence drops by 30% between the ages of 8-11 years old and that study didn’t include the impact on males, who are also being slammed by gender stereotypes and being bullied for their bodies. We explore how education and open dialogue about body inclusivity can help soften the effects of the bullying and cultural narratives that our children may receive. In our interviews we discuss specific parenting tips on how to handle these difficult situations and offer resources to help you navigate this topic.
This is such an important, under discussed topic so we are featuring two interviews today! We interview a Mama who shares her personal story of her son being bullied with sexual innuendos about his body shape and the challenges it held for her as a parent. She shares the impact on her as a mother and the mirror it held up for her own journey of body acceptance.
We interview Jessica Sanders, author of “Love Your Body,” an illustrative book for children to introduce them to the language of self-love to help build resilience while representing and celebrating diverse bodies and encouraging them to appreciate their uniqueness. Jessica explores why it is imperative for children to be introduced to a variety of body narratives and how to guide your child through beauty ideals and break the idea of a “normal body.”
Our takeaway question is: What is one way you can shift the body dialogues that you are having with even your littlest ones?

Teens are bombarded with diet culture messaging from the world. The advertisements, peer pressure, bullying, and developmental insecurities that teens face can foster negative body image, eating disorders, and lowered self-esteem. All of these factors impact a teen’s relationship with their body and create a powerful inner narrative. So what is a parent to do?
We interview Dana Suchow, positive body image advocate and eating disorder expert, on how parents can provide empathy, shared experience, and strong core values to develop a safe home environment. Teens will be susceptible to body image distress whenever they step out the door, so creating a family value system that goes beyond our bodies and food can be imperative to helping our children (and ourselves) fight through the messages that we are going to hear.

Your teen is bombarded with diet culture messages, surrounded by influential teens and their family food beliefs, and is at a peak age of body image concerns and hormones. This will definitely cause distress to so many Mom’s because it will break their hearts as they watch their teens struggle with their self-image and it will bring back memories of their own body image struggles and pressures they have experienced to uphold the beauty ideal.
This week’s episode discusses body positive, intuitive eating based resources where parents can learn more about how to support their teen’s development physically and emotionally. We interview Katie Bartels, RD about how she guides her clients and their families around tricky nutritional dilemmas such as sport and school schedules, prom and swimsuit season, and pressure from our health obsessed culture. Dieting will permanently affect your child physically and emotionally, so our hope in this episode is to provide listeners with the information and mindset to help their teen fight against societal messaging.

“Mom Genes” disclaimer: watching your teen navigate their body image journey and sort through all the messages they receive about nutrition will be an extremely challenging parenting phase. We hear from so many Mom’s about how you feel torn between the internal dialogue in your head that tells you to watch your calories and the Mama bear that comes roaring out when you hear your teen start counting theirs.
In this episode we are tackling how to help your teen navigate all the confusing messages they will receive about nutrition and lifestyle choices as well as how to appropriately use the word “healthy” so you can guide your teen to food freedom with confidence. We bring on Nicole Cruz, RDN and expert in child and adolescent nutrition, about how she helps her teen clients and their parents find peace with food in the home and at school. Do you struggle with using the scale to measure your worth, worry about how your food choices will impact the number on the scale, or justify your daily weigh-in as a way to “just keep an eye” on your weight? Even a casual relationship with scale can impact our self-worth and keep us from honoring our hunger and fullness so today we are tackling the impact of the scale on our mental and physical health. We interview McCall Dempsey, founder of “Southern Smash” and Eating Disorder advocate, about her recovery story and how it has become her mission to help people break up with the scale. We answer the big question: “should Mom’s get rid of the scale?” and explore how stepping on the scale, and altering your food intake as a result, will be something your children observe and subtly absorb. McCall gives us specific examples of how to find freedom from the scale and a fun challenge to turn your scale into art then get out the sledge hammer and smash the worth right out of that piece of metal! May we find freedom by stepping off the scale and instead doing the deep, inner work to heal our insecurities without changing our body.

We want our Mom listeners to find body peace through education about your genes and learning what it means to treat your body (and jeans) with kindness. So, while we often discuss the lack of control we have with our genetics on this podcast, today we are going to talk about an area that you actually do have control over.
Here at Mom Genes, we believe that you have a choice in how you treat your body. We discuss what “body kindness” means to both of us podcast hosts professionally and personally and we interview Rebecca Scritchfield, author of the book “Body Kindness.” She discusses many areas of how to be kind to your body in a diet culture driven world, acknowledges obstacles to body kindness based on privilege and access to resources, and offers comfort to the Mom’s who may be struggling with body kindness due to feeling their body has betrayed them. Rebecca gives specific examples on how to make the choice to have a better relationship with our bodies so that we can pass along body positivity to our children. As Mom’s, our children do not have the choice of how we talk to ourselves or treat our bodies but if we can give our children the gift of raising them in an affirmative body environment then we can create a strong future for them.

In this episode, we are talking about one of life’s greatest inconveniences and yet one of it’s greatest gifts…..your period. Since our podcast is all about exploring what you cannot control versus what you can control, we wanted to dive into this topic since our hormones and cycles are driven by our genes and yet the implications of those hormones on us physically and emotionally are so crazy making that we wondered if there is anything in our control. We are all about education of your genes to help you with your body acceptance journey, but we know that tips and tricks to get through a monthly pain in the ass….or should we say, uterus, might be beneficial.
We interview Amanda Montalvo, RD whose focus is on helping women navigate their cycles, care for their bodies, and find what works best for them. We have candid discussions about gentle nutrition, the clinical definition of detox, how to heal your body without buying into the wellness culture messaging, and how to support your body through it’s monthly cycle with rest, movement, and nourishment. We also sync up in our cycles mid-convo, discuss period privilege and the flaws in the women’s health care system, and develop a new hashtag #bleedandchill that we are pretty sure will go viral.

Part 2: Joyful Movement
For many Mom’s, the terms “joy” and “exercise” don’t go together since our bodies are worn down, our time is spread too thin, and self-care is pushed to the back burner. Finding what movement feels like a celebration of your body and brings you joy can be very perplexing for Mom’s, so in this episode we offer tips on how to increase attunement with your body so you can find your stride. We also explore how to adjust your expectations depending on your phase of life or physical needs while identifying your wants and needs so you can carve out space to take care of yourself. We interview married couple and running coaches, Erik Stanley and Jacque Peppler, of “Trail Roots” about how becoming parents has challenged their lifestyle, business, and relationship. Jacque shares the difficulties Mom’s face with their expectations of themselves regarding their time, bodily changes, and types of movement they can participate in. Erik talks about the common partner response of “let’s just fix it,” and how he learned to listen to Jacque’s internal struggles to support her journey of making time for movement. This is a unique, thought-provoking interview that will touch your heart and hopefully leave you feeling less alone.

In this episode we explain that shifting the focus means exploring how exercise is feeling in your body vs what it is doing to your body. If you are an exhausted and stressed out Mom whose only motivation for exercise is focused on body change, you will quickly fizzle out. We give Mom’s three alternative motivations for exercise (strengthening your mom mind, your mom bod, and your mom bonds) and explain the benefits of each one. We interview Laura Spruyt, ambassador for “Run Like a Girl,” about how she seeks adventure and connection with the outdoors in her movement. The possibilities are endless and if joy is at the center, there is no wrong way to get your groove on!

Is the Dad bod something that men fear? Do men feel they must maintain a certain physique as they age? We have been in the “Mom Bod Series,” so today we are spreading the love to the Dads and exploring the stereotypes associated with a Dad bod! We discuss the stigmas and stereotypes men, and those who identify as male, may experience as their bodies age and change. We interview Aaron Flores, RDN on his thoughts about the pressures men experience to express masculinity physically and emotionally. Aaron explores how suffering silently takes a toll on men’s mental health and relationship with their bodies and food. Aaron gives tips to men on how to explore their body image messaging, support their partners as they navigate their relationship with changing bodies, and set the tone in the household for body positivity.

The Mom Bod Series Hop on the Mom Genes magic school bus, because we are taking a trip to middle school health class to get a refresher on a woman’s cycle then stopping by biochem to explore irregular periods, hormones, and insulin levels. We interview Julie Duffy Dillon, RD who specializes in PCOS in her private practice and on her podcasts “Love, Food” and “PCOS and Food Peace” about how to find peace with your genes and jeans if you have PCOS. Julie dives deep into why cutting out carbs and sugar and chronic dieting only aggravates the already inflamed and fatigued PCOS body. We ask Julie to bust the biggest PCOS myth of all: do you have to cut carbs and sugar to manage irregular insulin levels and irregular hormone levels? Julie explains why your body needs these foods and how deprivation increases your symptoms and offers alternatives to elimination diets. Julie Duffy Dillon, RD

Your body, your boobs. Today we are tackling the topic of feeding your baby, the anatomy of your boobs and it’s impact on breastfeeding, and why on earth do our boobs change size and shape postpartum and as we age? Disclaimer: this isn’t just about breastfeeding, because we know (and share in our personal examples) that there are many ways to feed your baby but, let’s face it, your boobs are a big piece of your journey of body acceptance and nourishing your child so they deserve a feature (or double feature!) in our series on the mom bod! We interview Lauren Archer, postpartum doula at "Love of a Little One," on how she coaches new parents to navigate their relationship with feeding their littles.

In this episode, Rachel and Tina discuss the stories our families pass down about weight, body size, how we carry babies and give birth, and how easily we lose/gain weight.
