Sexual assault can be extremely traumatic for anyone. Today we talk about the highly trained SANE nurses at Piedmont Medical Center who help our detectives gather crucial evidence to help investigate sexual assault cases.
This week, we speak to three recent YCSO Citizens Academy graduates on their experiences during the 6-week program.
The YCSO Citizen's Advisory Board will be comprised of citizens of diverse backgrounds from our four geographic districts. The purpose of creating this group is to strengthen the ties between our agency and the citizens we serve. The role of the Citizens Advisory Board is to bring concerns from the community to command staff and offer suggestions about ways that we can better serve our community. We tried to accomplish this same objective by holding community meetings in the four districts, but the low attendance at those meetings did not justify all of the work that went into hosting the meetings.

On October 30, 2005 two hunters scouting a place to hunt off Pleasant Road and Vista Road in Fort Mill discovered the skeletal remains of a person buried in shallow grave. The person was deliberately covered with tree branches and had been there about a year. Forensic examination found that the person was a Hispanic man possibly from Guatemala. He had defensive cuts on the arm, and neck area. Sixteen years later YCSO detectives are still trying to solve this cold case.
For the 15th year the Sheriff's Foundation of York County held a fundraising golf tournament. Since 2007 $220,000 worth of scholarships have been given to York County students thanks to sponsors and player participation. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. On this Behind the Badge we talk with Victim Advocate Tina Marsh on how victims of domestic violence can break the cycle of violence.
From October 2007 to February 2008 a string of harrowing armed robberies and shootings took place in York County. 14 years ago this month a crime spree began in York County that would put most everyone on edge. Phillip Watts would rob stores all the while shoot two clerks and two customers after they complied with his demands. Watts was finally arrested at a Rock Hill apartment off Riverview Road on Feb. 18 after a DNA match identified him. Wednesday June 29th 1977 around 11:00 AM Eva Jerline DeBruhl was last seen mowing the lawn at her home in the Catawba / Leslie area off Rainbow Circle off Old Friendship Road. At the time of her disappearance Eva was 15 years old with blond hair and blue eyes. She was approximately 5’1” tall 105 pounds and at the time she disappeared wore glasses a pink floral shirt and blue shorts.

Mishelle Calvert was last seen on May 8, 2017, & her vehicle was recovered in Charlotte, NC, on May 30, 2017. Calvert was staying in Rock Hill, SC, for about one month, and was supposed to return to Florida on May 8, 2017. She has not made it to Florida and is not answering her cell phone. She is believed to of been traveling to Miami, Florida, at the time of her disappearance.

On this YCSO Behing the Badge we dive into history and an interesting story from a book written by a local author and historian Jerry L. West called ’50 Ways to Die – Homicides, Accidents, Suicides, Infanicides and Acts of Mother Nature.’ One short story in the book took place 112 years ago of the last execution performed by a York County Sheriff. We also read from the news paper article about the public execution which drew 'hundreds of spectators'.

Starting May 6th at 9:00 P.M. for 17-Days The I-77 southbound bridge over the Catawba River in York County is scheduled for major repairs. During construction, the southbound bridge will have to be closed and southbound traffic will be diverted to the northbound bridge. This closure is planned to last through May 23rd at 5:00 A.M. Harry Caraway was the manager of the Yellow Freight terminal in Rock Hill, SC. His body was found at Yellow Freight on Easter Sunday April, 11 1993. Caraway had been shot to death after an apparent struggle. After 28 years YCSO Detectives are still looking for his killer.

Gene Campbell operated a wrecker service in Rock Hill, SC and disappeared while on a service call. His body was later located on February, 21st 1989, on Winter Road off Neely's Creek Rd in the Lesslie/Catawba area of York County, six days after he was reported missing. Campbell had been shot to death and there had been an attempt to cover his body with tree limbs and pine needles. Campbell was 55-years-old at the time.

On October 4th 1986 Rennie Rinehart was leaving to go to work at the Celanese Plant in Rock Hill around 10:00 P.M. Shortly thereafter she was shot and killed outside, in front of her home near the corner of South Anderson Road (Hwy 21) and Hall Spencer Road in the Catawba community of York County. In this episode we talk with Major Robbie Hudgins who was one of the investigators on the case and Captain Carson Neely on how we investigate unsolved cases today.
September 30th 1918 a tragedy took place in Sharon, South Carolina a Police Officer was attacked, shot and killed in the line of duty. Sharon Town Constable T.R. Penninger was a local Black Smith and the local law enforcement officer. Frank and Mills Moore were served with a warrant for disorderly conduct by Penninger and before they were taken into custody they attacked and shot Penninger. This podcast helps uncover this lost tragedy of the Line of Duty Death of T.R. Penninger.
In this episode of YCSO: Behind the Badge we talk with Major Robbie Hudgins and Retired K-9 Sergeant Randy Clinton reflecting on the night they both responded to the shooting death of Dep. James Brent McCants. On September 25th 1992, McCants stopped a car on Dave Lyle Blvd. in Rock Hill for driving with out headlights on. One minute later a passer by radioed out on McCants car radio "May Day". Hudgins and Clinton discuss the events that transpired before during and after.
