The nonprofit organization Itasca Waters is presenting Practical Water Wisdom, a monthly speaker series that seeks to offer scientific insight and practical advice for protecting the waters in northern Minnesota. February’s speaker was Jim Paruk, one of the world’s leading experts on the Common Loon. He has studied breeding and wintering loons across North America for the past 30 years. The 4th annual Iron Range Pasty Fest is serving up hot pasty dinners on Sunday, October 9th 2022 to benefit the Iron Range Partnership for Sustainability (IRPS). Free electronics recycling will be on-site, accepting laptops, desktops, monitors, and some televisions. This fund-raiser dinner features a homemade beef or pork pasty, made with locally-grown potatoes, carrots, rutabagas, and thyme. University of MN scientist Diana Karwan studies the quality of water where it flows over and through forest landscapes. She takes water from our streams and medium sized rivers to identify what she calls the “chemical fingerprints” of these waters. Lynn Anderson is a member of Tamarack Water Alliance, a group that opposes Talon Metals proposed nickel mine in Aitkin County, Minnesota. Talon is looking to expand domestic sources of nickel, a key element in batteries used in the electric vehicle industry. Matteson has been charged with gross misdemeanor for allegedly conspiring, aiding, and abetting criminal trespass on critical public infrastructure pipeline during the movement to Stop Enbridge Energy’s Line 3 pipeline. The North Country Scenic Trail is a 4,600 mile foot path that stretches from North Dakota to Vermont. The NCT follows a scenic route through the prairies, forests, and lake-country of northern Minnesota, including an urban route through the heart of Grand Rapids along the Mississippi River.
