This is a mix I put together just before Christmas that takes on board various strains of modern acid house and acid techno. In all honesty, it’s pretty similar to Post-Millennial Acid Frenzy, but even more current, as all of the tracks were released in the last two or three years.
I apologize for taking so long to put this mix on the blog – my well of inspiration when it comes to writing has kind of dried up recently. But not my interest in doing mixes! So expect some more stuff as the year proceeds. Meanwhile, here are some acid-themed videos to enjoy.
Get right on one, matey.

For the 8th edition of my Squat Rocking series of mixes dedicated to the sound of the UK free/squat party scene, I decided to shake things up a little. The previous instalments have covered the core sounds of the scene: acid techno/trance and hard techno, but with this mix I wanted to tip my hat to dark drum n’ bass, a crucial element of the free party scene back when I was a regular attendee in the late 90’s/early 00’s. The drum n’ bass dj’s on the free party scene regularly aired some of the nastiest, filthiest, most gruesome tunes … perfect sounds for stomping about to in a gloomy warehouse! I’ve tried very hard to capture that vibe in this mix, which covers 15 of some of the most no-holds barred techstep bangers in my collection. Enjoy!

Here’s my second Escape From Samsara tribute mix; I actually posted this a while back on Soundcloud, but haven’t got around to writing a blog post to accompany it. The last few months have been pretty hectic so I kind of let blogging slide.
Anyways, this one takes off right where part 1 finished; it starts at about 150 bpm and then builds over the next 105 minutes to a frenetic 170 bpm finish. In terms of artists featured, this one is even more Samsara-esque than the first one, featuring as it does the residents Beamish and Oberon (as well as some of their side projects), and regular guests like Mark Sinclair, Lab 4, Cybernaut, K90, Orange Peel and more.
The concept is very much to capture the unique vibe that those parties had back in the day. I hope that I have managed to do so! I still remember vividly my first time at Escape From Samsara at the Fridge n Brixton in autumn 1996 – the music was pounding, everyone everywhere was dancing, and even though I was a teenager and I felt awkward and young, the vibe was friendly and welcoming. It was an amazing introduction to rave culture and to being part of that world. 20 years later it is still a treasured memory. I know times change and all, but I hope that teenagers who are getting into the rave scene today can experience the same kind of fun.
If you want a taster of that vibe in its pure undiluted form, I hope this mix (and its predecessor) will give you that, but if you want video evidence of such, please check out the following clips from the Carry On Regardless parties that the Escape From Samsara and Pendragon crews were responsible for throwing out in Wales in the late 90’s:
so that’s where they went … my dubplate copy of Rapture by Lab 4 … a treasured possession!

So the 780 project somewhat petered out …
On the plus side, I am very pleased to present the first of two tribute mixes to the mighty Escape From Samsara, the legendary London hard trance club night that has been going strong for over 20 years now (although these days more one-off events than regular parties). For many years it was a weekly fixture at the Fridge club in Brixton, and indeed it was the first club I ever visited, a few weeks before my 16th birthday in the autumn of 1996. What an amazing experience that was!
That’s why I am quite chuffed to have done a monster 50 track tribute, with 210 minutes of music. This first part starts at about 135 bpm and then works its way up to 150 bpm, and then the second part goes from there all the way up to 170 bpm!
Along the way I’ve tried to capture the essence of what made Samsara so special – I’ve used both European and UK records, and across the two mixes I have tried to make sure that I have included tracks and remixes by some of the favorite live acts and dj’s associated with Samsara, such as Lab 4, The Secret, Cybernaut, K90, Choci, Nuw Idol, Mark Sinclair, and the residents Beamish and Oberon.
If I get a bit more time, I will try to write this all up in more detail, but until then I hope you enjoy the sounds!

This is the mix I recorded for the recent Hardcore Summer Bash 2016. It’s a selection of absolutely slamming old skool happy hardcore tunes from that period in 1994/1995 when hardcore split from jungle (I recently covered the transition point in Drop The Hammer 12), so expect plenty of tearing breakbeats layered over stomping kickdrums, all accompanied by a plethora of vocals, stabs and pianos. So many pianos.
Why Everyone Needs to Fall in Love with Happy Hardcore
At any given moment in time, the world is full of scorned music genres … (however) there is one genre that stands alone as the most mocked, most misunderstood music scene out there: happy hardcore. The scene seems like a moment in dance history that most would rather forget, something that has been abandoned to cultural dead time and is now destined to forever be associated with all those other sources of moral panic from the 1990s, like joyriding, solvent abuse and Sunny D.
Musically, it’s a punishing mix. Take 170 distorted bass drum thuds a minute, parping synth stabs, breakbeats that rattle around like broken washing machines and sling in vocals that sound sung by kids on pills. It’s perhaps not tough to see why it’s widely regarded as rave’s Pompeii – the sound of the dance music that set the agenda for British youth culture in the late 80s and early 90s collapsing after battering itself with one too many handfuls of eccies.

Sorry for the delay in getting new mixes up – life has kind of gotten in the way over the last few months.
Anyways, here’s the latest little mix – it’s 100 minutes of what I would define as real trance music. Hypnotic, driving, melodic electronic sounds, with a minimum of soft beats and endless breakdowns with twee vocals and twinkly arpeggios. Music to lock into, music to drift to, music to make you dream.
Enjoy!
PS: I just passed 100,000 listens on Soundcloud – thanks for listening!

Here’s a ragga jungle mix that I threw together yesterday as a teaser for my set at Kulturhaus Kili tomorrow.
This mix is 15 tracks of classic ragga jungle – music which is always fun to listen to and mix with. Some of these tracks were a bit tricky to mix with, since the beats are so wild and untamed, but basically I think it holds together quite well.

So it’s been a little while since I did a mix, which basically boils down to some stuff happening behind the scenes in my personal life that has meant that I have had less time to do mixes. Which is a shame, because it’s knocked me right off the pace of The 780 Project. Now that I’ve opened a small window up time-wise, I decided to leap through it whole-heartedly with this mix, which is 30 tracks of across-the-board bass pressure. I just threw this together as a bit of fun, but it includes new and old, and everything from electro to breaks to techno to proper old skool rave. Good times!
Expect another fresh mix this weekend – that will be a jungle mix as a teaser for my set at Kulturhaus Kili next week.

Hey! This week I am super-pleased to drop a tribute to the one and only Addison Groove, Bristol’s main man for juke-influenced bass antics.
What’s juke?
It’s the Chicago-born super-fast, super-syncopated electronic music style that, along with its associated dance style footwork, has spread in recent years far beyond its origins in the ghettos of Chicago’s West Side and South Side.
What Addison Groove has done has taken the juke template, slowed it down a bit, and then applied the methodology to other styles of dance music, like dubstep, electro, and house. I’m a huge fan of his music, and in fact I probably enjoy the fusion style a bit more than the straight-up original juke style of artists like the late DJ Rashad (his XLR8R podcast with DJ Spinn was pretty awesome, though).
So anyways I decided that the moment was right for a short tribute mix. It’s Friday afternoon, I can’t really be bothered to write up a big detailed blog post, so here are the tunes, and I hope you enjoy them.
Have a great weekend!
