We never mature beyond any of the four stages of prayer we are exploring in this Practice, but the further we progress in prayer, the more we desire to speak to God, to listen to God, and to just be with God. As a general rule, you can gauge the intimacy in a relationship by how comfortable you are being alone together in the silence. This type of wordless prayer has to come to be called “contemplation,” based on 2 Corinthians 3:18. Its most basic meaning is to contemplate: to look, to gaze upon the beauty of God, receiving his love pouring out toward you in Christ and by the Spirit, and then giving you love back in return.

There comes a point in our relationship to God where we desire not just to speak to him, but to listen. To hear his voice. As Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” This is a Spirit-generated desire in the heart of a disciple of Jesus. In Luke 10:39, it was said of Jesus’ disciple Mary that she “sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he said.” This is the primary posture of a disciple of Jesus: sitting at his feet and listening.

Praying pre-made prayers is a beautiful way to pray. It’s where we start our prayer journey, and it's a place we revisit all through our lives. But at some point in our life of prayer, we desire to pray our own words to God-to share what’s on our mind, our heart. Our pain, our joy, our hopes and fears. We can’t help but desire to interact with God in a more authentic, personalized way.

We explore the first stage of prayer: talking to God. When the disciples asked Jesus, “Teach us to pray,” in Luke 11, Jesus replied, “This then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name…’” He gave them a pre-made prayer, or what some call a liturgy, to pray to God. Liturgies can look like praying the Lord’s prayer, singing through the Psalms, or using a prayer app. This way of praying can be incredibly helpful in various seasons of our lives.

Matthew 7:12-14 teaches that the gate to life is narrow and the way is hard, but living a life of holiness leads to true fulfillment. Holiness involves dying to our flesh and living in step with the Spirit, which takes obedience. Jesus paid the price for our sins and gave us His Spirit to empower us, but few can accept this narrow path. The way that leads to destruction is wide and easy but never worth it.

Fasting is a willing abstinence from food for a period of time. It is one of the most abused and least used of all the practices of Jesus. Yet for millennia, it was a core practice of apprenticeship. We live in a culture not only of food, but of excess, luxury, and addiction. For so many of us, the desires of our body have come to hold power over us. In the battle with our “flesh,” we have become its slave, not its master.

Prayer is our opportunity to interact with the Creator God and participate in his work of bringing redemption to earth. Eugene Peterson calls this the “middle voice”. The middle voice means “I am an active participant, but the action did not begin with me. I am joining the action of another”. We as Christians speak in either the active voice or passive voice, but prayer takes place in the middle voice. Prayer in its essence is a deep form of worship to and with the Father.

Mastering a skill is something that can be done through learning, trying and practice. But mastering one’s self is the greatest challenge. We can try to teach self-control but ultimately we will fail. It is the work of the Holy Spirit inside of us that gives us the power to bring our body, thoughts and actions into submission. Gaining control over desires and passions by the work of the Holy Spirit gives us the ability to win at life.

In a culture that preaches “if it no longer serves you” cut it out of your life, there is a lack of faithfulness. Faithfulness to a job, friendship, romantic relationship, etc. We all desire things or people to be faithful to us, but don’t put in the effort to reciprocate that. But faithfulness is often the opposite. As faith is a gift from God, we are divinely persuaded to trust in God even when it’s hard and we don’t understand “why”.

It’s one thing to say you love Jesus, it’s another to desire and submit my daily patterns that enable me to live a life that demonstrates his influence in my life. For apart from Him we bear no fruit in for the kingdom of God.

We can understand this text in both the literal sense of adultery and imagery often used in the Old Testament as those who lure us away from our faith. Adultery is a theme found several times in Proverbs. In these relationships we find ourselves compromising more and more. This can begin by a slow slipping until suddenly, we find ourselves in a dangerous place. Adultery will lead us to death, but wisdom will lead us to life. This passage can help us practice wisdom by identifying and avoiding adulterous relationships that lead to spiritual death.

Prioritizing the reading, studying and applying of God’s Word (the Bible) helps us grow in our knowledge of Him and wisdom to our lives. God patiently teaches us through His written words, and it protects us from believing the lies we are bombarded with daily. Just as our faith is to be lived out in community, raising children should also be done in community. Everyone participates in starting children off in the way they should go. This takes intention, time and effort. When a new family walks into a church community, if their children are loved, seen and taught well, that speaks volumes. Many times, in the Old Testament the community of God is encouraged to tell the generation behind them of what God has done to establish their faith. Prioritizing the spiritual health of our children is an important piece to practicing wisdom in raising children.

One of the greatest things that can happen in the Church is to see people find their fit. Too often we serve out of obligation, guilt and undo pressure. Finding your fit is the best way to thrive not only in your own journey but it helps the church become stronger and more resilient as each part finds it place in the body.

The empty tomb impacts everything: the moment we are in and our future, as well as how we relate to God and what it means to be a follower of Jesus. The resurrection is good news found within a bigger story of what God is doing in our world. The power of The Resurrection is that it did happen and is happening as many are brought from death to life in Jesus. God came near to be one of us, walked amongst us, went to a cross and overcame death for us so that we can be part of His eternal kingdom that one day He will set up in full.

It’s an upside down world when a criminal is released and an innocent man is crucified, but this was the necessary path for Jesus to take in order to unite all things under heaven and earth (Ephesians 1:10). We will unpack the passion/suffering of Jesus' journey to the cross.

Peter loved Jesus. Jesus had brought Peter into His circle because he knew that Peter was someone who would have great impact on Jesus' movement, but Peter didn’t realize what it would cost him to be connected to Jesus and in the moment when the pressure came, he denied Jesus. Counting the cost to follow Jesus is not something we think about if we see Jesus as an add-on to our lives, but when he is central to all of who we are, it will cost us.

Often it’s our selfishness that keeps us from truly understanding who Jesus is. If we hold to a world view that our personal “happiness” is the ultimate goal, then we don’t see Jesus as who he is, but only as someone who can help us get a “better” life. Judas betrayed the one that invited Him to follow, for a few coins

Everyday faith is woven into the fabric of one another. To pray, praise, confess and anoint is the power that props up those that are weary. Faith for others will refresh and encourage the discouraged. We must fight the lies that tell us not to intrude or reveal too much about our sin to others. Life, faith and others will create a resilient faith. Faith is personal but never private.

Every day, there are things bidding for our affection and they feed on our internal desires. This creates conflict within ourselves and in relationships. How we counter the pull of the world is to submit to God, draw near to him, resist the Devil and he will flee. We cannot underestimate the power of the devil in his desire to sabotage our faith.

When we think about faith, we don’t often attach it to wisdom. But, when you look at this section of James, you begin to realize that faith is infused from wisdom that comes from God. James warns against wisdom from below. He calls it earthly, unspiritual and demonic. In this talk we will expose some of the worldly wisdom that stands in opposition to wisdom from above.

You might be familiar with the phrase, “actions speak louder than words”. Well, with faith, this is true. We can talk a good talk, but when the real test of faith is in our actions that reveal our faith. To have our faith mature we need to be living it out as we express it through the patterns of everyday. One writer said, “A workless faith is a worthless faith.”

Your attitude matters to the outcome of faith. Often when facing daily life pressure we carry an attitude that short circuits the work that God is doing to mature our faith. When the trials come, and they will, we need to keep the end results of that trial in mind, crown of life. This crown speaks to the life we can have now, and the life where we receive the crown when Jesus returns.

Seeking justice is a way to seek God’s righteousness. We can also see this as a way of life that seeks the love and peace in all things. Our soul cravings will only be satisfied when we seek to express the fullness of God’s way of life for all those who are marginalized.
To follow Jesus is to seek peace for all. This way of life does not deflect or avoid conflict, but is willing to do the work to make sure that peace is pursued. It steps in with hands down and hearts alert to bring reconciliation to what is at hand. Peacekeepers are the ones that are doing the hard work in work places, families and communities that bring health and strength to the confusion.
