In this episode, we dive into a powerful shift in financial thinking: it’s not just about saving money—it’s about knowing how to use it. After decades of being told to “save, save, save,” many people reach retirement feeling anxious about spending the very money they worked so hard to build.
We explore why having a purpose-driven plan matters, how to confidently spend without fear, and why retirement should be about doing what brings you joy—not just watching your investments grow. From real client stories to practical insights, this conversation highlights the importance of living intentionally and making the most of your time, health, and resources.
We also discuss the risks of having a “disinterested spouse,” the emotional side of financial transitions, and why planning isn’t just about numbers—it’s about preparing for real life.

In this episode of The Retirement Planning Happy Hour, Eric Douglas and Chris Vaughn break down how global events—like war, geopolitical conflict, and political uncertainty—can shake the markets and create short-term volatility.
With recent tensions in the Middle East making headlines, many investors are wondering: What does this mean for the markets and for their portfolios?
In this conversation, we explore why markets often react emotionally to uncertainty, why headlines tend to focus on negative news, and how investors should think about volatility during times of global conflict. Historically, markets tend to dip during periods of uncertainty and volatility, but they often recover once clarity returns.
We also discuss why long-term fundamentals matter more than short-term fear. Even during global conflicts, the economy continues moving forward—people keep working, spending, and businesses keep operating.
Most importantly, this episode highlights why having a well-structured financial plan matters. When your portfolio is designed properly—with diversification, income planning, and long-term strategy—you don’t have to panic every time the headlines get loud.
If you’ve ever wondered how geopolitical events impact your investments—or how to protect your financial future during uncertain times—this episode is for you.

In this episode of Retirement Planning Happy Hour, we take a deeper look at the true purpose of money—and why misunderstanding it can quietly sabotage both your finances and your happiness. Money doesn’t create problems; it amplifies them. When money becomes the goal instead of the tool, it often turns into an idol—whether you have a lot of it or feel like you don’t have enough.
We explore timeless biblical principles around money, including the often-misquoted idea that money is the root of all evil, the parable of the talents, and why fear-based hoarding can be just as destructive as reckless spending. You’ll also hear why genuinely happy people don’t make money their top priority—and how purpose-driven planning creates balance between enjoying life today and preparing for tomorrow.
This episode challenges the idea of chasing arbitrary numbers and instead focuses on using money intentionally: to create joy, fund meaningful experiences, build legacy, and serve others. If your financial plan is only about “more,” you’re missing the point.

Plus, we explore how election cycles, consumer behavior, and long-term historical trends can help investors stay grounded during periods of volatility.

In this episode, we break down the truth behind so-called “passive income” strategies like dividend-paying stocks and annuities. While income can feel comforting, it often comes with hidden tradeoffs—reduced growth, higher taxes, market risk, and complex fee structures that many investors don’t fully understand. We explore how dividends are taxed, why high yields aren’t always a good sign, and how relying too heavily on income-producing assets can increase long-term risk.
We also dive deep into annuities, including income riders, benefit bases, and the concept of “phantom value”—numbers that look great on paper but don’t represent real, accessible money. This episode highlights why guaranteed income isn’t free, how insurance companies manage risk in their favor, and why growth still matters even in retirement.
If you’re building a retirement plan or evaluating income strategies, this conversation will help you understand the real costs behind the guarantees—and why balance matters more than payouts.

In this episode, we break down the biggest myths surrounding passive income and why “passive” doesn’t always mean easy—or risk-free. Many investors believe real estate and high-yield opportunities are simple paths to steady income, but the reality is far more nuanced.
We discuss the true definition of passive income, the tradeoff between passivity and cash flow, and why more convenience often means less income. From rental properties and short-term rentals to REITs and alternative investments, we explore the hidden risks, liquidity challenges, and opportunity costs most people overlook. You’ll also learn why real estate feels safer than stocks—and why that perception can be misleading.
If you’re building income for retirement or evaluating passive income strategies, this episode will help you think more clearly about risk, return, and what “passive” really means.

In this episode, we break down one of the most overlooked truths in retirement planning: your income plan is the engine that drives everything else. Most people jump straight into investments, but without knowing how much income you need—and how long it must last—your financial plan is incomplete from the start.
We unpack why every dollar in your portfolio needs a job, why investments can’t be chosen until your income strategy is set, and how to avoid retiring into a lifestyle that falls short of what you envisioned. We also dive into the realities of wealth transfer, why families lose money during inheritance, and the crucial conversations parents should be having with their children long before assets change hands.
Whether you're nearing retirement or planning decades ahead, this episode will help you understand why income first, investments second is the smartest—and safest—path to financial freedom.

In this episode, we break down the real reasons why so many people make costly mistakes in financial planning—and why emotions, not the markets, are often the biggest threat to long-term success. From chasing trends you don’t understand, to panicking at dips with no real news behind them, to following the “lemmings” of Wall Street, we explore how emotional decision-making can sabotage even the best-designed portfolios.
We dive into the emotional cycle of investing, why euphoria is actually the point of maximum financial risk, and how institutional money managers can unintentionally trigger fear-driven sell-offs among everyday investors. You’ll also learn why headlines about bubbles, rumors, and volatility often distort reality—and why your plan should always guide your actions, not the noise of the moment.
If you’ve ever wondered why you react to the markets the way you do, or how to keep emotions from wrecking your financial future, this episode gives you the framework to think clearly, plan confidently, and stay disciplined when the market tests you most.

Most financial mistakes don’t come from bad luck—they come from misunderstanding risk. In this episode, we dig into one of the biggest blind spots in financial planning: private equity and the myths surrounding “exclusive” investments.
While wealthy investors get early access to the best opportunities, the average investor only sees the deals that have already been passed on by those with the deepest pockets. And by the time these funds reach the general public, they're often illiquid, highly volatile, and far riskier than people realize.
We break down why so many Main Street investors fall for these traps, how lack of liquidity can leave you financially stuck, and why understanding who said no to an investment matters more than the investment itself. If you want to avoid catastrophic losses and build a financial plan that actually works, this episode is a must-watch.
Protect your financial future by planning smarter, not riskier.

In this episode, we dive into the misconceptions surrounding the term “financial advisor.” Today, many insurance companies encourage agents to get licensed so they can present themselves as advisors. While that may sound legitimate, much of the guidance they provide still ties back to the products their company sells.
We’ll explore the critical differences between investment advisors and financial planners, why validation is not the same as strategy, and how overlooking pitfalls can leave gaps in your retirement plan. More importantly, we’ll break down the mistakes people make when they confuse product-driven advice with true planning.
If you’re serious about building a secure financial future, you need more than investments—you need a complete plan. This episode will help you spot red flags, understand the difference between sales and strategy, and avoid costly missteps.

In this episode, we unpack the question: Where do we actually learn about money? The truth is, most of us never had formal lessons in school about saving, debt, or investing. Instead, we learned from our parents, from what we saw at home, or—sometimes—from painful mistakes as adults. Whether through arguments about bills, small childhood purchases, or late-night financial stress, those lessons stick with us and shape our money mindset.
We’ll break down how early experiences influence lifelong financial habits, why letting kids make small money mistakes can save them from larger disasters, and how shifting from a “spending” mindset to an “ownership” mindset changes everything. You’ll also discover why advice from experts like Dave Ramsey works for some, but isn’t one-size-fits-all—and how to apply financial wisdom in a way that truly fits your life.
If you’ve ever looked back and thought, “I wish I had learned about money sooner,” this episode will help you understand where those lessons really begin and how you can rewrite the story—for yourself and the next generation.

In this episode, we uncover why inheritance planning is far more than just receiving assets—it’s about understanding the rules, taxes, and strategies that ensure you keep more of what’s passed down. Many families are surprised by how account types, tax laws, and timing can drastically impact the true value of what heirs receive. We’ll explore special rules for spouses inheriting IRAs, how inherited Roth accounts should be managed for maximum tax‑free growth, and why communication before someone passes is critical.
You’ll also learn about common mistakes, like failing to sell assets with a stepped‑up basis or missing the 10‑year rule on inherited IRAs—errors that can cost tens or even hundreds of thousands in unnecessary taxes. Whether you’re planning your own legacy or preparing to inherit, this episode will help you make smarter, tax‑efficient decisions.

In this episode, we break down one of the most critical shifts in modern investing—how the traditional relationship between stocks and bonds is changing. For decades, bonds acted as the safety net when stocks fell, providing balance and protection in diversified portfolios. But recent years, especially since 2022, have shown a troubling trend: stocks and bonds moving down together.
We’ll explore why this positive correlation is happening, how it impacted the traditional 60/40 strategy, and what it means for moderate and conservative investors nearing retirement. If you're relying on bonds to hedge your portfolio risk, this is a conversation you can’t afford to miss.
Whether you're building your retirement plan or reassessing your current portfolio, this episode will help you understand why diversification isn’t what it used to be—and what you can do about it.

In this episode, we dive deep into one of the most essential strategies in financial planning—diversification. While many investors chase headlines and compare their returns to the S&P 500, true success lies in building a portfolio that’s balanced, resilient, and aligned with your goals. We’ll break down sector diversification, strategic long-term investing, tax diversification, and how to manage risk in retirement through smarter allocation.
You’ll learn why different investments in different types of accounts (taxable, tax-deferred, tax-free) can have dramatically different outcomes—even if they hold the same assets. We’ll also explore how diversification shifts as you transition from growth mode to retirement income planning, and why not all investments belong in every phase of life.
Whether you're decades from retirement or approaching it soon, this episode will help you build a portfolio that stands the test of time—through every market season.

NEW EPISODES! This past Saturday we premiered one of our new episodes of the Money Puzzle TV Show. This week Brian Ramsey and Chris Vaughn are talking about the biggest expense you're going to have to in your lifetime. And I'll bet you spend hardly any time during the year talking, discussing, or planning for it. People think that during retirement, the big expense is going to be medical expenses. But taxes far, far outweigh that. We found that the average person pays $480,000 in taxes over their lifetime. That is a significant amount of money that people just don't plan for it at all.
This week on The Money Puzzle Podcast Eric Douglas & Aaron McAndrew discuss some of the questions they are seeing in client appointments. With the market the way it is we cannot stress enough the importance of a financial plan. Having a financial plan in place and not letting the investments dictate what your decisions are, letting the plan dictate what investments you have and what investments to use. That's the purpose of planning, which is making sure you're not going to run out of money and retirement, and then you can fund as many of the goals that you have as possible.

This week on The Money Puzzle Podcast we explore “Is there anything good about a recession?”. A recession is not necessarily fun but when you look at just like a natural economic cycle, the evolution of the economy, the evolution of a business cycle in and of itself, a recession is a part of a healthy economy. Correct? Because as things go up, they get to a saturation point and they then need to come down to correct themselves.

This is the intro episode as we rebrand the podcast to The Money Puzzle. With the new year and another forthcoming announcement we'll be making as we receive a few more details, we decided it was time to refresh the podcast a bit. The name stems from an analogy we use quite a bit with clients in the office. Putting together a financial plan resembles very much the idea of putting together a puzzle. Each puzzle piece represents a different part of your life. Think about things like your investments, retirement accounts, taxes, wills, trusts, time horizon, risk tolerance, and insurance policies. These are all pieces of your puzzle that need to fit together to form a clear picture that illustrates how best to achieve your goals, whatever they may be. Thanks for listening to the show, and please share with any friends or family that may benefit from listening to anything we have to say.

In this week's episode of Peace of Mind Radio, we look at an article we came across that tries to quantify the negativity in financial news media, juxtaposed against the performance of the S&P 500. The disparity was quite alarming, but provides some level of proof that what you see and hear in financial media isn't quite so different from traditional media outlets. To understand the big picture, you really need to filter out the noise and focus on what's truly important. Are you sticking to your individual financial plan, and are you achieving your goals? If the answer to those questions are both yes, the rest is nonsense.
