There’s a moment in nearly every foster mama’s journey that hits harder than expected. It usually doesn’t happen during licensing classes or even during the first hours of welcoming a new child. It happens after a few days, when the adrenaline wears off and real life kicks in. When the child starts showing signs of trauma. When your biological kids start acting out. When the caseworker misses their visit or when the bio parent sends a letter that leaves you in tears. It’s then that you realize: no one prepared you for this.If you’re there right now—or you remember it vividly—I want you to know you’re not alone. I created this post because I wish someone had sat me down before my first hard week and told me what to expect, what to ignore, and what to lean into. So here it is—my honest list of what I wish every foster mama knew before her first really tough week.Apply HERE for the Fearless Fostering Group: https://forms.gle/UAtaNxBNHJfyc3hF7

If you’re a foster mom, chances are you’ve found yourself in emotionally charged, high-stakes moments more than once—moments where your child is melting down, or a visit doesn’t go as planned, or something triggers your own trauma. These are the moments when your nervous system goes into overdrive, and every part of you wants to react. But here’s the truth: Regulation always comes before connection. And that means you must be grounded before you can effectively support your child. In this post, I want to walk you through five trauma-informed grounding techniques specifically for foster moms navigating tough moments. These aren’t fluffy feel-good suggestions—they’re practical tools you can use when it feels like everything is spiraling out of control.Apply HERE for Fearless Fostering: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfF8P5eedeg3Wd7xdwaTOISWoyXX3LyZEsWsjjx11sI9bZUkQ/viewform
Foster care isn’t static — it’s a system that’s constantly shifting based on politics, policy, funding, research, and public awareness. And in 2025, we’re already seeing some significant changes that every foster parent (especially moms on the frontlines) should be aware of.Whether you’re new to fostering or have had multiple placements, these updates matter. They impact how long kids stay, the kind of support you receive, and how you advocate for your family and your foster child.Let’s break down what’s new in foster care policy this year — and more importantly, what it means for you as a foster mama.APPLY for Fearless Fostering HERE: https://forms.gle/KXbNKLUUEynwU2fy8

If you’re reading this, you probably already know that. You know the wild swings from hope to heartbreak, the late-night worries, the unspoken fears. You know how it can feel like everything is happening at once — or not at all.And in the thick of all of that? There’s the messy middle. It’s the part that doesn’t get as much attention:✨ When the honeymoon phase of a new placement fades and the real work begins.✨ When reunification plans shift and change, leaving everyone reeling.✨ When your child’s trauma shows up in ways you didn’t see coming.✨ When you’re doing everything you can — and it still doesn’t feel like enough. This “messy middle” is where most of foster care actually happens. And it’s also where so many foster mamas feel stuck.Today, I want to share why this season feels so hard, and some gentle, real-life ways to find your calm — even when it feels like the chaos will never end.
Absolutely LOVED this talk with my pal and former Fearless Fostering member, Christi Chatman. In addition to being a foster mama, Christi is a therapist and big believer in therapy (especially embodied therapy for all that we hold in our bodies) for foster mamas. She shares her foster care journey thus far, what was painful and frustrating, as well as encouragement for how to persevere and heal from the wounds of foster mama trauma. When you begin your foster care journey, you prepare for a lot of things. You prepare your home. You prepare your heart. You prepare for trauma, transitions, and the unknown. But almost no one prepares you for one of the most sacred, painful, complex, and often overlooked relationships in foster care:The relationship between you and your child’s biological mother.Join the Foster Mama Lifeline here: https://stan.store/fearless_fostering/p/reclaimed-mama-community-pfdw5q2kFree Resources here: https://stan.store/fearless_fostering
If you’ve ever stood face-to-face with a child in full-blown meltdown mode—screaming, hitting, crying, or shutting down—you know the pressure.Your heart races. Your brain scrambles for the “right” response. And suddenly, you’re the one feeling completely dysregulated. This is one of the hardest truths about parenting—especially in foster care:You can’t support a dysregulated child unless you know how to regulate yourself. And that’s not easy when the moment feels personal, chaotic, or just plain exhausting.Let’s break it down:What regulation actually is (and what it’s not)Why foster parents are more prone to dysregulationReal strategies you can use in the momentWhat to say when you freezeAnd how to recover when it doesn’t go well (because sometimes, it won’t)First 5 Scripts Freebie: https://stan.store/fearless_fosteringFoster Mama Lifeline Community: https://stan.store/fearless_fostering/p/reclaimed-mama-community-pfdw5q2k
When I first started parenting kids from hard places, I thought I was prepared.I had read the books.I had attended the trainings.I had even practiced my calm voice in the mirror (true story). But nothing fully prepared me for the moment I was in the middle of a screaming match with a 6-year-old who had flipped a table over, while my heart was racing, my voice was shaking, and I was thinking,“What am I doing wrong?”The truth is, nothing. I wasn’t doing it wrong—I just didn’t know what I know now.If you’re navigating frequent meltdowns, power struggles, or total shutdowns, you’re not alone. These behaviors can feel overwhelming and even scary at times. And most of us were never taught what to do with them—especially in the context of trauma. So today, I want to share with you the 3 things I wish I knew sooner about handling hard behaviors. These lessons have completely shifted how I show up as a foster mom and a therapist—and they might just do the same for you.Join the Foster Mama Lifeline here: https://stan.store/fearless_fostering/p/reclaimed-mama-community-pfdw5q2kMore freebies and resources here: https://stan.store/fearless_fostering
If you’re a foster or adoptive mom, there’s a good chance you’ve felt it.That deep, nagging guilt that whispers:You’re not doing enough. You should have handled that better. You shouldn’t feel this way. They deserve more than you can give.I call it the guilt spiral—and it’s a space so many of us end up in, often without even realizing it. It starts small, with a moment of self-doubt. But it snowballs quickly, pulling us into a pit of shame, anxiety, and relentless pressure to be everything for everyone.I’ve been there—more than once. And I want to talk about it today because I know how lonely and exhausting it feels to carry guilt silently. I also know that it doesn’t have to be this way.In this post, I’m sharing why the guilt spiral happens so often in foster and adoptive motherhood, how it affects us (and our families), and most importantly—how to get out of it.Let’s breathe some truth and grace into this together.Join the Foster Mama LIfeline Here: https://stan.store/fearless_fostering
When I began fostering, I felt like I had prepared as much as any human possibly could. I read all the books. I watched the webinars. I went to the trainings. I talked to seasoned foster parents. I even practiced “holding space” for imaginary scenarios in my head. I was ready—or so I thought. But no amount of preparation can fully equip you for the lived experience of foster parenting, especially in that first raw, vulnerable year. Now, years later, as a therapist who supports foster and adoptive moms, I can look back on that time with a bit more grace. I see the mistakes I made—not with shame—but with curiosity and compassion. Because those missteps were also my greatest teachers. Here are the biggest mistakes I made in my first year of fostering—and the lessons they taught me.Join the Foster Mama Lifeline here: https://stan.store/fearless_fostering/p/reclaimed-mama-community-pfdw5q2kFind free resources + more support here: https://stan.store/fearless_fostering
As a former school social worker and someone currently serving as a long-term social work sub in a public school, I’ve had a front-row seat to how schools function behind the scenes. I’ve also witnessed how challenging it can be for foster mamas to advocate for their children in the school system. Many foster children enter school carrying the weight of trauma, attachment challenges, and emotional stress, all of which can affect their ability to learn and thrive in a traditional classroom setting.Join my Foster Mama Lifeline Here: https://stan.store/fearless_fostering/p/reclaimed-mama-community-pfdw5q2kGet more support and freebies here: https://stan.store/fearless_fostering
Fact: Foster care disproportionately affects families of color. In this episode, I'm having a SUPER raw and real conversation with foster mama and foster care advocate Gaile Osborne. Gaile is the executive director of the Foster Family Alliance of North Carolina and has learned firsthand that most of us well-meaning foster mamas DO have work to do when it comes to being anti-racist and educating our extended family and friends to do the same.Learn more about the Alliance here: https://www.ffa-nc.org/Get more support, including my Foster Mama Lifeline Community here: https://stan.store/fearless_fostering
As a foster mama, you carry a weight that few truly understand—the sleepless nights worrying about your child’s emotional well-being, the endless advocacy to ensure they get the right support, and the deep emotional investment in their healing. You’re juggling doctor’s appointments, IEP meetings, sibling visits, birth parent relationships, and behaviors that other parents don’t have to navigate. And through it all, you’re expected to keep going. But have you ever stopped to think about what it costs you to stay in this cycle of exhaustion? Most of us don’t. We push through, telling ourselves that our kids need us. That we’ll take a break later. That we don’t have time for self-care. That we just need to be stronger. But burnout isn’t just a bad day or a rough week. It’s a long-term depletion—and it has real consequences for your health, your family, and your ability to show up as the mom you want to be.Get the Foster Mama Survival Kit here: https://stan.store/fearless_fostering/p/solutions-for-foster-care-stress

Many people outside the foster care community have this misconception that fostering is a way to make money. In fact, for 60% of foster parents, it brings more financial strain than they anticipated.Grab the PLR bundle here to start your digital product journey today: https://stan.store/fearless_fostering

Picture this: a home filled with laughter, love, and children. It’s the ideal image of foster care, but it’s not always the reality. There’s a side to this story that often goes untold: the unseen struggle of foster mamas. The glossy image of happy, harmonious families is frequently just a veneer the shields the true reality. Behind closed doors, foster mamas grapple with a myriad of challenges. It’s a constant tug of war between providing love and care and dealing with the emotional and mental strain that inevitably accompanies the role. The silent battles of these brave women are often overlooked. The sleepless nights, the worry, the constant state of hypervigilance - it can take a toll.Download my Foster Mama Coping Skills Class here:https://stan.store/fearless_fostering/p/foster-mama-coping-class

Perhaps you fear becoming too attached to a child who might leave. Or maybe you’re worried about dealing with a child’s trauma, not being equipped to handle their hurt, their past. Imagine the feeling of being judged, misunderstood, or even criticized for the way you handle situations in your foster home. It’s a common misconception: this idea that there’s one, and only one right way to be a foster mom. It’s a myth that’s been perpetuated, creating undue pressure and judgement on the very shoulders of those who’ve chosen to open their hearts and homes to children and families in need. As a foster mom, you’ve probably felt the sting of scrutiny, the weight of expectations pressing down on you, the guilt creeping in when your methods differ from those of others. I’m here to tell you it’s ok. It’s ok to be different, to have your unique approach. Get your Healthy Boundaries Guide here: https://stan.store/fearless_fostering

If you’ve been a foster parent for any length of time, or even if you’re considering foster care, maybe you have asked yourself this question at some point: “how do I foster well?”
Parenting is no easy task, with ANY child, regardless of how they came into your family. But when a child in foster care enters the equation, there are certain best practices, things that every foster parent should know to help make the situation as easy as possible, for both your foster child (or children) and you.
Whether or not you consider yourself a Christian, or a person of faith, I think it behooves us to know what the Bible says about foster care. And even though the words “foster care” aren’t in the Bible, the Good Book has a LOT to say on the matter. But please don’t take my word for it – let’s look at a few passages together and see what we can see.
No matter how you slice it, foster care is full of unknowns. Just when you think you DO know something, you find out something totally different. Find out what you can do to control what you CAN control.
The Fearless Fostering Podcast is coming soon! Lots of actionable advice for foster moms or prospective foster moms (and dads!) coming your way. I want to share more of my personal foster care and adoption journey, but I also want to interview other foster and adoptive mamas, as well as bring you the same quick, applicable mental health advice you know and love. Thanks for being here, and I invite you to stick around! The best is yet to come! :)
As a therapist who works primarily with women, I hear about mom fears and mom guilt A LOT – but a common source of these often comes in the form of this question: “how do I keep my anxiety from affecting my kids?”
If you’re a mama and a worrier, this is the post for you. But even if you’re just one of those, stick around – I promise to make it worth your while!
First, let’s talk about WHY mamas tend to worry so much about how their own anxiety may affect their kids. We’ll start with the most obvious two reasons: we love our kids and anxiety sucks.
Most of the women who come into my office for help with anxiety, as well as many students in my Fear Less course are caregivers. By the very nature of how they spend most of their time, their main focus is on others, namely their spouses and kiddos. They also truly see motherhood as a huge gift and a huge responsibility. AKA, they’re super nervous they’re doing it wrong. Or they’re worried if they get enough things wrong, they’re going to ruin their kids. Sound familiar?
I can definitely relate, especially in my earliest years as a mama.
But now that I’ve been in the parenting game for over a decade (not to mention the foster parenting game!), I feel a lot more comfortable and at ease in my role as a mama. I’m not saying I do everything perfectly (or even close! ha!) all the time, or that I never have a mom fail, but I do feel confident enough to be able to share a few rules of thumb for not letting your anxiety trickle down to your kiddos. A few of them will probably surprise you! Let’s get started…
When I first began to study mindfulness, one of my immediate thoughts was: this is great, but how does mindfulness work for moms?
Being a mama, after all, is my most important job, and one that I just knew mindfulness would help me with, but I wasn’t sure how. A brief Google search helped me to stumble upon the work of Dr. Shefali Tsbary, in particular her book entitled The Awakened Family.
Dr. Shefali’s work is based primarily around the idea that as we parents become more aware of our own inner child and inner struggles, we can stop parenting from a place of reaction to those emotions and parent the unique child (or children) right in front of us. So often, we let our own tribulations and traumas from growing up dictate how we parent, when in reality, what our kids really need is for us to be as attuned to them as possible, just as they are, each and every day.
Mindfulness and self-awareness are powerful parenting tools, to be sure, but having been thrown back onto the foster care roller coaster before I was “ready” (aka before MY perfectly planned out plan) has caused me, in recent months, to “forget” some of the other benefits of mindfulness for moms.
As I began to receive nasty emails from my kids’ bio mom, I began to worry more.
As we were assigned (yet another) new social worker, I began to worry more.
As I heard less and less from anyone at DCF or our daughter’s lawyer, I began to worry more.
All this worrying came was happening below the surface of my consciousness, and I really didn’t see it affecting my day to day life very often. Until one night, or early morning rather, my husband noticed I was wide awake at 4 am.
“What’s wrong?” he whispered.
“I can’t sleep; I’m worried about what the social worker said today when she brought the baby home from her visit.”
“What did she say?”
“She said that they had a really good visit and that she was surprised how well her mom did with her.”
“Ok…..”
“AND, that makes me worry that we’re not going to be able to adopt her.”
“Cathleen, she didn’t say we couldn’t adopt her. All she said was that it was one good visit. There’s so much more to this situation.”
And that’s when it hit me: he just CBT’d me! Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is the main way I teach people to overcome anxiety.
Let me assure you that even those of us fully versed in the treatment of anxiety can find ourselves letting our worries have a little too much power in our lives. The good news? When you’re fully versed in the treatment of anxiety you return to what you know and you practice what you preach. Again and again and again.
The next day, I actually did some of the CBT and Mindfulness modules in the Fear Less course. I made room for journaling and mediation in my day. And in making space for stillness, I had an epiphany – that’s usually when epiphanies happen, right?
Am I living life so scared of losing what I have that I’m not spending any time enjoying what I have?
I think it’s so easy for women, but especially mamas to let those pesky “what ifs” creep in and take over their thought life. But when we do this, we miss the magic of what is happening in our beautiful, messy, chaotic lives RIGHT NOW. And even if life feels a little too messy and chaotic right now (I feel that!), it’s still beautiful because it’s HERE. It’s OURS. It’s ever-changing, but right now it’s like this. And worrying it away is a huge waste of that gift.
So to get myself back on track, I breathed deeply for a while and I prayed: Help me to enjoy the blessings of THIS day without worrying whether or not they will be here tomorrow.”
Let me guess: life is feeling a little crazy for you right now, and maybe you’re wishing you knew some ways to avoid burnout (if you feel you could be heading in that direction).
You too? Whew, that means I’m not alone (and also, it means you’re not either).
This whole 2020/pandemic on the rise again/election/parenting/foster care/school unpredictability/daily life stressors thing has got me feeling like almost every single emoji at once.
When I feel so many of these feels (and emoji faces) start to creep into my daily existence, I do what I tell all my clients and students…do the work.
Wait, WAIT! It’s not THAT kind of work! It’s the work of taking care of YOU, the work of figuring out what you need and actually GIVING that to yourself. Don’t know what you need? Again, you’re not alone. So many people don’t know how to answer the question of what they need because they have never truly given themselves permission to ask that before. In all honesty, it might take you some time to figure out what you need to do the work of taking care of you and readjusting your sails a bit to make life feel more manageable.
If you feel yourself heading toward burnout (aka you notice yourself having a short temper with the people you love, you feel tired all the time, you feel symptoms of anxiety like tightness in your chest or a lump in your throat, to name a few…) AND you want to know the exact ways to avoid burnout that I recommend (and that I practice!), here you go…
So many of my clients (and friends!) remain undecided about whether or not they should take anxiety medication, and I totally get it. It’s a big decision. I remember feeling a little unsure about starting medication for my PMDD way back when.
It’s totally normal to hesitate when you’re thinking about putting psychotropic drugs in your bod. Believe me, I get it.
I also want to clarify (before we get too far) that this post in no way takes the place of meeting with a therapist and/or doctor or psychiatrist in your area. I can’t help you make the decision whether or you not you should take meds for your anxiety – only your personal treatment team can do that. Just sayin 😉
What I can do, however, is give you a few things to consider to help make those meetings a little more efficient. AKA, I can help you think things through a bit ahead of meeting with your therapist or doctor so that you feel you are making an informed decision that is 100% in your best interest.
The question I’ve been getting more and more the past few days as I’ve been going live on Instagram and Facebook is: “How do I deal with pandemic anxiety?”
Sure, there are lots of other, more specific questions wrapped up in that one, such as:
“What if schools don’t open up in the fall?”
“What if schools DO open up in the fall?”
“What if my kid won’t wear a mask?”
“What if my family and friends won’t wear a mask?”
“What if my family and friends keep trying to make me wear a mask?”
And so on, and so forth.
These are uncertain times, to be sure. I mean, the fact that you’ve heard that phrase eleventy bajillion times by now is proof, right? But the truth is, there IS a way to deal with pandemic anxiety that will help you significantly reduce your discomfort and help you feel more peaceful, regardless of whether or not Great Aunt Millie decides to wear her mask.
And I’m about to let you in on a little secret: the best way to deal with pandemic anxiety is the same way to deal with ANY anxiety – with a structured, evidence-based plan that will help you calm down your amygdala.
My a-what-a?
Your amygdala, my friend. It’s the little almond shaped part of your brain responsible for emotion and behavior, but its claim to fame is that it’s the part of the brain that gets activated when you feel fearful. The amygdala is where the “fight, flight, or freeze” response is processed, and man oh man, can that be uncomfortable.
But whether your fear is based on a global pandemic (is that redundant? one can never be sure these days…), or while you’re waiting for those test results from the doctor, or literally anything else…your amygdala is what we are dealing with first and foremost.
The good news? You don’t need anything drastic like a lobotomy or magnetic therapy or even medication or therapy to de-escalate that little almond shaped piece o’brain.
You simply need to learn the tools that have been proven by neuroscience and psychotherapists time and time again.
Since therapy (and essentially all of life) has migrated online these days, I decided to make it super easy (and affordable!) for people to learn these very tools.
That’s the heart behind why I created, Fear Less, my new online course that’s available now through July 16.

Whether you feel inundated with guilt over things you can’t control, anxiety about things that may or may not happen in the future, or unexplained sadness when a disturbing “what if” scenario suddenly springs to mind, we have all been there at some point or another. What separates a normal amount of intrusive thoughts from something worthy of a clinical diagnosis is what you do with those thoughts when they happen. A person with OCD or another type of anxiety disorder will typically be run away with these thoughts, making their present task extremely difficult or downright impossible. So let’s spend some time chatting about coping skills, shall we? There is so much to share about these unwanted thoughts, but for today’s episode I will stick to the basics.

Marmee March is, without a doubt, my favorite literary character of all time. And not only that, but I kind of want to be her. She is full of kindness, goodness, wisdom, and grace. She is loving, just, and sweet. I doubt she ever had a #momfail. Well, actually she admitted to Jo that her temper needed some work back when she had four extremely little women running around the house (and who amongst us can say otherwise?) So add humility to her list of honorable traits. Like Mary Poppins, Marmee is, in my opinion, practically perfect in every way. I’m currently re-reading Little Women for, like, the 5th time and I just never get tired of it. I love the character development, the emphasis on the March family’s bond, and how the relatability of the book has stood the test of time. But most of all, I love Marmee. God bless her. Upon my current reading, I’m noticing yet again the sage wisdom Marmee offers, but also how she was wise beyond her years when it came to self care. If you will allow me to be just a bit liberal with Louisa May Alcott’s beloved text, I would like to share three self care lessons straight from the immortal Marmee March.

The truth is, no matter what the circumstances are around a friendship ending, it’s never fun. So even if others tell you (or you tell yourself), “it’s their loss,” it’s also yours. Aside from losing a person whom you used to share so much with, you’ve also lost what was. You’ve lost how things were when things were good, and I must say, that is probably the most difficult loss of all.
For all of my friendships that have ended, I am thankful to have so many more that have stood the test of time. And my guess is you do, too. In this episode of the Self Care Bestie podcast, I'm sharing my best advice for dealing with all the feels you have when a friendship ends.
