Since 1979, C-SPAN has been providing unfiltered access into the inner workings of American democracy. Until recently though, the network was funded entirely by the cable industry and had never attempted to fundraise from private donors.
However, the disruption produced by cord cutting necessitated innovation and late last year C-SPAN launched a development program to generate support from the channel's loyal audience which values their unfiltered, unbiased approach politics.
C-SPAN's first ever Development Director, Molly Connors, joins Dan to share her story and go behind the scenes to discuss what it's been like to launch a fundraising program for legacy brand.
Topics covered in this fascinating chat include:
Molly's origin story in fundraising, how her new position at C-SPAN brought her career full circle, and how helping to launch a digital program for PBS prepared her for the position
C-SPAN's three critical donor cohorts and how Molly and her team identified them
What is the value proposition that drives those cohorts to give and the importance of unique value propositions for different groups of donors
TONS OF TACTICAL INSIGHTS, including C-SPAN's channel and engagement strategy and clever hacks for increasing DAF and digital giving (Hint: You'll want to add your postal address to all of your donation pages after listening to this interview)
The value of donor stories and helpful tips on how to solicit them
C-SPAN's surprising success on TikTok and reaching younger donors
Plus, so much more...
This interview is a great listen for fundraisers and non-profit leaders who enjoy founding stories as well any fundraising professional who is interested in tactical hacks for audience development, donor engagement, content strategy, and so much more.
Fundraisers who have been able to successfully start a program from the ground up have a rare and invaluable perspective which is why we are so grateful to Molly for sharing her time and wisdom.
We really enjoyed this conversation and, got a ton of value out of it, and believe you will too.
Thanks as always for listening to the Dynamic Non-Profits Podcast and enjoy the show!

Fundraising thought leader Dave Raley drops by the show for a casual chat about innovation...more specifically what's holding innovation back in the nonprofit sector.
Much deeper than a philosophical discussion, Dave and Dan dig into innovation tactics and shifts which can benefit nonprofits of all sizes (some of which require little to no overhead to implement).
Dave also touches on the role of leadership and why understanding your "working genius" type holds the key to driving a culture of innovation.
Dan also asks Dave how his background in direct mail influences his approach to innovation and they have a brief side car discussion about strategies and techniques which overlap between direct mail, email, and other channels.
This is a fun and valuable listen for fundraisers and nonprofit leaders who are passionate about driving innovation or who are interested in taking stock about the state of innovation inside their own organization.
Please rate and review Dynamic Nonprofits if you get value out of Dan's interview with Dave Raley. It's the very best way to support the DNP mission to advocate for an unsiloed approach to fundraising.

We cover a lot of ground on the Dynamic Nonprofits Podcast, but some of our favorite discussions are when we deep dive into tactics and practical tips that can help transform your fundraising program.
If you're an email fundraiser, or just a fundraiser who shares our passion for A/B testing, you'll love Dan's conversation with email GURU Jay Schwedelson.
Jay's combination of passion, candor, and practicality make for an entertaining discussion that will provide you with pages full of tips that can transform your organization's approach to email (some of which are surprisingly simple and counterintuitive).
Topics Discussed Include:
Why open rates still matter and how to improve them with emojis
Breaking News: Why opt-outs are actually a GOOD thing
Optimal send times (Spoiler: They're not on the hour)
Why your call to action is leaving donations on the table
Shockingly simple advice for how to make sure your email newsletter is opened and read
Plus, so much more including how Jay's direct mail background informs his perspective on email and why Linked In Newsletters are the next great frontier for donor engagement.
It's a conversation that is as entertaining as it is informative (Dan and Jay even talk a little bit about reality TV towards the end). If you do walk away with some helpful advice, we hope you'll pay it forward by rating and reviewing the Dynamic Nonprofits Podcast on your platform of choice (but especially Apple Podcasts). There are a lot of books about fundraising, but one in particular has driven conversation within the nonprofit sector this year - The Generosity Crisis.
Co-Author Nathan Chappell joins Dan to look back on a year of The Generosity Crisis and what he's learned from '10,000 conversations' since the book's release.
They discuss what's driving the crisis and focus on solutions for solving it, some of which are surprisingly human and practical. Nathan also talks about radical connection techniques that nonprofits can borrow from commercial brands (who borrowed them from us first) and shares his inspiring fundraising industry origin story.
Dan's conversation with Nathan is the perfect compliment for those who have read the book and for those who want to quickly catch up on year's worth of conversations about it.

Dan shares his thoughts from last week's Multi-Channel Mini-Con and discusses the ongoing renaissance in nonprofit / fundraising education.
There's a trust crisis in America. According to Gallup, trust is down in institutions ranging from government, to the media, schools, and just about everything in between.
Unfortunately, non-profit organizations aren't immune from this decline in trust. In fact, the Edelman Trust Barometer shows that non-profits are now trusted less than businesses for the first time in 40 years.
The trust crisis has real world implications for non-profits and the beneficiaries they serve as demonstrated by RKD Group's new study "Non-Profit Marketer's Guide to Trust". Their findings show a direct relationship between a donor's level of trust and their willingness to give AND maximize contributions over their lifetime.
Amanda Wasson, RKD Group's Executive Vice President of Client Services, joins the show to deconstruct this pressing research. We deep dive into RKD's findings and, as importantly, walk through actionable steps non-profits can take to build and enhance trust with their donors.
The non-profit sector can't wish the trust gap away, but we do have the tools the close it. Take your first step towards closing the trust gap with donors by listening to this interview with Amanda Wasson.
If you get value out of our conversation with Amanda, please rate and review the Dynamic Non-Profits Podcast. Your feedback is appreciated and will help more dynamic fundraisers discover our content.

He also discusses his recent trip to the NIO Summit in Dallas and the upcoming Multi-Channel Mini-Con.

Kevin Gentry has been a staple in the fundraising community for nearly four decades and his Fundraising Tips newsletter is a weekly must read for many in the sector. Kevin joined the show to discuss getting back to basics and how classic direct marketing techniques hold the keys to helping non-profits thrive during a time of great uncertainty.
However, our off-the-cuff conversation covered much more ground than that...
The Conversion Covers:
Kevin's origin story as a fundraiser and how we can help more talented individuals discover the non-profit sector as a career choice
The value of mentorship programs, both for the mentor AND the mentee
Why attending in-person events is so critical for professional development at all career levels
The origin story of Kevin's "Fundraising Tips" newsletter which has been running strong for 15 years and how he's improved it by actively listening to readers' feedback
The advantages of publishing original content and advice for fundraisers who aspire to be thought leaders
The mutual benefits of providing value to others
Tactical Advice Includes:
Why your non-profit should strive to "Go Big" in 2023 and how basic direct marketing techniques can help make that happen
Applying the "Human Action Model" and the three steps necessary to get someone to take a desired action
Richard Viguerie's "Four Horsemen of Marketing" (positioning, differentiation, benefits, brand,)
The risk in deferring to tightening up mail plans and writing off donors who haven't given recently
Why direct mail continues to be effective in a digital era
The value of getting feedback from donors and understanding how they perceive your brand
This is a classic conversation about the fundraising industry that is also packed full of tactical advice for fundraisers and non-profit leaders. Regardless of what causes you work with or where you are in your career, you're sure to benefit from this discussion with Kevin Gentry.

What's the difference and why each are critical to maximizing your program's impact- Donors' resilience in the face of economic headwinds and how donors budget giving into their annual spending plans - Reasons why some donors increased giving in 2022 - How to build loyalty through multi-channel engagement - Generational differences in giving and the important role younger donors (and even non-donors) play in building a successful program Plus, so much more in this conversation which will give you unique insight into giving and inspire many test ideas for the year ahead. How much is the right amount to ask donors for?
Michael Gorriarán,President @ Arjuna Solutions, joins the show to answer this fundamental question. Dan and Michael discuss how Arjuna applies behavioral economics to determine the optimal ask amount for creating long-term relationships with donors which maximizes their lifetime value potential.
Topics Discussed Also Include:
How behavioral economics also help non-profits determine when and often to mail individual donors (important in an era of inflation and declining response rates)
Why behavioral economic modeling takes a clearer picture of donors than transactional data or wealth screening alone
The importance of optimizing ask amounts across channels (Did you know that asking donors for different amounts on and offline can hurt LTV?)
How to break down barriers and silos which prevent cross-channel collaboration from happening (a favorite topic of discussion on Dynamic Non-Profits!)
Budgeting solutions that can make non-profits more nimble
Plus, so much more!
Michael also shares his family history in philanthropy and the lessons he learned working at Microsoft that can increase the impact of the non-profit sector.

Fundraising through gaming and livestreaming has become a multi-billion dollar revenue channel by marrying tried and true peer to peer fundraising psychology with modern technology, but it remains a mystery to many experienced fundraisers and a medium which is labeled with misconceptions by those who don't game themselves.
Think your donors don't game? Think again, studies show that there are over 200 million gamers in the U.S. alone many of whom are in their prime earning and giving years (those millennials who grew up playing Tetris on NES now own homes and have families of their own - And many still game in their free time).
Gaming and Livestream fundraisers present non-profits with a unique opportunity to engage valuable donors who may not be reachable through traditional direct response channels, but knowing where to begin can seem daunting.
That's why I was thrilled to invite April Stallings onto the show. April is Gaming and Influencer Community Manager for Make-A-Wish International. A lifelong gamer herself, April helps to cultivate a community of gamers, content creators, and influencers who are eager to raise funds from their followers and get more wishes granted for children.
In this eye-opening discussion, April covers:
Who games and why it's a valuable channel for non-profits of all types to explore (April helps bust some serious gaming myths)
How to recruit content creators and influencers who are willing and able to raise money for your cause
The importance of cultivating relationships with those creators and not looking for one-offs
Her methods for vetting potential creators and why influencers with smaller followings can be the most effective fundraisers
Some tips for non-profits with files built from traditional direct response channels to find and engage gamers who are already donors
Why gaming is just part of streaming and the growth of chat streams
Plus, much more...
Our conversation with April will be a fun listen for gamers and a valuable one for fundraisers who want to know first steps for starting a program of their own. However, it will be equally valuable for traditional direct response fundraisers who are seeking to broaden their knowledge about one of the fastest growing channels in the industry.
If you do get value out of our interview with April, please pay it forward by rating and reviewing the Dynamic Non-Profits Podcast and subscribing to the show. It really does help boost our rankings and helps us connect with more dynamic fundraisers like April, Dynamic Non-Profits is available on Apple, Spotify, and wherever great podcasts are heard.

When it comes to caging donor data, time and accuracy are money and delays and poor data hygiene can cost non-profits a lot in revenue and delayed decision making.
The importance of lockbox and caging services have come to the forefront for many organizations since the start of the pandemic, but the mechanics of these vital services remain a blind spot for many seasoned fundraisers.
Since 2005, Engage USA has been striving to provide clients with "obsessively accurate data" through the use of innovative technology, transparency, personalization, and a never ending mission to change expectations about data quality in the non-profit space.
Their founder, Dennis Hoffman, joins the show to give DNP listeners an education in Caging-101 and talk about the role cagers can play in breaking down data and strategy silos.
Topics Discussed Include:
- How Dennis' experience as a direct mail fundraiser inspired his pursuit to perfect non-profit data hygiene
A 101 overview of how caging and lockbox services work (including, "Why do they call it caging anyway?")
The role technology has played in creating faster, more accurate caging
Data which cagers can help capture (in addition to donation) that can help streamline and integrate fundraising (For example: Did you know cagers can help retain and catalog survey responses and comment mail?)
How cagers can help nonprofits take advantage of emerging payment methods such as e-wallets
The answer to the TRIVIA QUESTION: What percentage of donations are still made via check? (Listen through the entire interview for an answer which may surprise you)
Plus, much more
If fundraising is a V8 engine, caging is the oil which keeps it going. Enjoy my conversation with Dennis Hoffman as we shine a light on a part of the industry which is sometime unsung but is always absolutely vital to the success and optimization of nonprofit fundraising.

Why non-profit "branding" is a myth
Why outer envelopes are so critical for success in fundraising and how to fully optimize their impact
Tips for expressing gratitude to donors

Label and paper availability have been among the biggest headwinds facing fundraisers in 2022. We wanted to know where things stood and where they were going so we decided to go straight to the source. Alan Rich has been President of Nova Label Company for close to 4 decades and knows the ins and outs of labels as well as anyone in the business.
Alan was super generous with his time and shared his comprehensive knowledge on a number of topics including:
The state of label availability along with the root causes of the shortage
Tips for planning around label availability issues
Why a labor strike in Finland (Yes, Finland) is impacting your mailer's ability to get labels
Why labels are here to stay as a fundraising premium (Hint: There's a group of donors who LOVE and value them)
Trends in label artwork, why more mailers don't experiment with their artwork, and test ideas for art
The false choice between Art versus Science in fundraising and how the right artwork can expand the reach of your mail piece
Why it's beneficial to include your production partners in your strategy discussions
Plus, much more!
An experienced voice can be reassuring during uncertain times and we thank Alan Rich for lending his to Dynamic Non-Profits listeners. Fundraisers who mail packages that use labels will benefit from Alan's advice and perspective, but so will other fundraisers who want to better understand why labels are so effective in fundraising.

Dan talks about the critical mistake that many organizations make by assuming donors don't want to give early in the year and provides some advice on how you can connect with donors who prefer to give outside the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.
Paper shortages, production delays, and supply chain issues are all the talk of the non-profit sector heading into 2022. Dean Hart, President @ MWI Direct has been working in paper and production for nearly 3 decades. He joins Dan in this special interview to talk about what's driving the shortages, delays, and price increases and how mailers can plan around them for the coming year and beyond. Topics Discussed Include: * The current state of the paper supply * Short term and long term factors which created the current shortages * How demand for shipping materials impacts the availability of envelopes * Structural challenges that paper suppliers are facing * Impacts of labor and raw material inflation on paper prices * How production timelines have been impacted by issues with materials and labor * What stocks of paper are most available right now? * Shifting from an optimization mindset and aligning your 2022 plans based on what allows your organization to stay in the mail * The value of unsiloed information sharing and communication to help your mailer overcome paper and supply chain issues * Why you shouldn't bank on supply issues resolving themselves quickly and why this could be the "new normal" * What may surprise you most about the process of making paper Dean also shares his thoughts on innovations in digital printing and how print vendors can help bridge the divide between direct mail and digital fundraising. Our conversation with Dean Hart is a deep dive into the paper and supply chain crisis which will help you understand the root causes of how both are impacting the non-profit sector but, more importantly, is filled with solutions to help you navigate around them and fundraise with confidence into the future. One of the things which makes the fundraising world special and unique are the grassroots fundraising movements which are striving to improve donor communication, retention, and non-profit best practices from the ground up. It's this grassroots mentality which provides the sector with a lot of it's energy and helps push the innovation envelope.
Recently, the Donor Participation Project caught my attention as one of the more successful and influential grassroots movements out there which is why I was thrilled to welcome their host, Louis Diez, to the show. The Donor Participation Project's mission is to improve donor retention through education and the sharing of information with the goal of closing the gap with the 20 million U.S. households who have abandoned giving since 2000.
In addition to facilitating discussion and research with DPP's over 1,000 members, Louis is also Executive Director @ Muhlenberg College giving him a unique perspective into the strategies and techniques which are getting donors to give and continuing giving.
We covered a lot in this discussion including:
The backstory behind DPP's founding and mission
Why optimization alone isn't enough to grow giving and why building community is the key to bringing in new donors and retaining them
5 critical steps to build "Deep Community" with your donors
Why non-profits should trust and empower their donors to be community ambassadors
How to scale community building
Louis also talks about how his background in music has helped him become a better fundraiser and shares his thoughts on the industry's most pressing issues.
Community has become a big buzzword in the non-profit world (we talk about the problems with buzzwords too!) which is what makes this discussion so unique and valuable for fundraisers. Louis doesn't just talk about the importance of building community with your donors, he provides tangible steps and measures to actually do it.
This interview with Louis Diez is an invaluable listen for any fundraiser who wants to get ahead of the case studies and white papers and find a hidden edge to help improve relations and retention with their donors.
I hope you enjoy my conversation with Louis. If the interview brings you value, please pay it forward by rating, reviewing, and sharing the show with your friends and colleagues. Most non-profits seem to be focused on one of two things. Either, maximizing value from "traditional" / longtime Baby Boomer and Silent Generation donors or "getting younger" by finding ways to connect with Millennial and Generation Z donors.
Both are important goals, but overlook the critical role that Generation X plays in the generosity landscape.
Born between 1965 and 1983, Generation X is the "Latchkey Generation" which is frequently forgotten by marketers and fundraisers alike.
However, the "Forgotten Generation" is forgotten no more thanks to a first-of-its-kind study produced by RKD Group The Non-Profit Marketer's Guide to Generation X. Their work reveals that non-profits are making a costly error by overlooking this educated, affluent, and generous generation which bridges the divide between digital and analog.
Justin McCord, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing @ RKD Group (and fellow Gen-Xer), joins Dan to discuss this groundbreaking study which will change the way you think about generational fundraising.
In this special watch-a-long episode (download RKD's study here), Dan and Justin go through the report's comprehensive findings and talk about what separates Generation X from their generational peers including:
The identity split which defines Generation X
Similarities and differences among the generations
Charitable giving behavior among Generation X
The values and attitudes which drive those behaviors, and much, much more...
Justin and Dan go beyond the study's surface findings and also talk, about actionable channel, copy, and data suggestions which can help you incorporate Generation X into your fundraising strategy.
It doesn't matter what generation you're from. Whether you grew up calling home on a payphone or an iPhone, this conversation will change the way you think about Generation X and how its donors can help grow your organization today and for decades to come.
Don't, don't, don't, don't, don't you forget...to download The Non-Profit Marketer's Guide to Generation X and watch along with this enlightening, fun, and informative interview with Justin McCord.

The "hidden" value in small gifts
Why major donors start with low dollar gifts
How small donor programs can generate valuable leads for major giving
Low retention rates for small donors and how to improve them
The missed opportunity with thank you letters and acknowledgements

Jim Langley has helped revolutionize how major universities fundraise by building a program that prioritizes active listening, empathy, and responsiveness over brand and sales pitches. He has also become a thought leader on how non-profits can retain the effective aspects of donor centric fundraising while removing the problematic elements which have fueled the rise of the Community Centric Fundraising movement. In this timely discussion, Jim details the differences between donor centric fundraising practices which build deep and positive relationships with supporters and "egocentric" tactics that create problematic power structures between non-profits and their donors. The ongoing debate between the merits of donor centric and community centric fundraising is a healthy and robust one which at times has become contentious within the fundraising sector.
