In our ninth episode of the Daily Arrow in Season 1, Kyle Lee, Media Production Coordinator for IVED, led us through the Matthew 23 and a powerful essay from "Keeping the Faith: Reflections on Politics and Christianity" that invited us to pray for leaders in the church. Pride leads to judgment and looking down on other people. Sadly, that culture of condemnation is pervasive in the American church today. One way to be less judgmental is to pray fervently for those we desire to have integrity instead of hurling judgment. So, we invite you to take the opportunity every Sunday to be led through a time of contemplation, devotion, scripture, and prayer that helps interpret the world around you through the lens of Christ and Faith. We can tell a lot about our relationship with God, ourselves and others by reflecting on what we pray for. In many ways, what we hear from God and share with Him privately is amazing an amazing predictor of what our public life with Him will look like. This is especially true in times of conflict and crisis with those we love and care deeply about. And for many Christians engaged in the long, hard work of justice and reconciliation we spend much more time in prayer for people to change rather than God to change us so that we are able to love people where they are. And it is this radical embrace of the other that allows us to participate in the transformation that Jesus does in the hearts and lives of those who disagree, dismiss or do us harm; because we have allowed Him to do that transformational work in us. Join Jonathan Walton, the leader of the IVED Team for a time of prayer, intercession and liturgy to model what this intimacy with God looks like. Walter Brueggemann, in Sabbath as Resistance: Saying No to the Culture of Now, writes, “(Sabbath) is resistance because it is a visible insistence that our lives are not defined by . . . production and consumption of goods.” There is a way in which keeping Sabbath frees us from the anxiety that creeps in and says, “But it’s not finished yet! There’s more to do!” Sabbath-keeping helps us resist grounding ourselves in measuring our worth by the work of our hands, or in multitasking, drivenness, or even moving too fast.
