On this episode of Hazard Girls, we welcome Dr. Hannah Shows, Artificial Intelligence Specialist at Haynes Beffel & Wolfeld LLP. When Dr. Shows was in tenth grade, her geometry teacher told her he would be placing her in a remedial math class “as a favor to her” because she would never use math in her future, he unknowingly set her on a course that changed her life. When she arrived at college she opted to take the more difficult of the available math classes to prove to herself she could do it. It was in that class that she found her love for math and math education thanks to a more accessible, open, and diverse teaching style. Since then she's never looked back. During her Ph.D. studies, Dr. Shows was working as a programmer. It was there she realized one of the things she loved about the work she was doing was the communication aspect. Her work required her to facilitate collaboration between multiple technical and clinical departments. Overcoming the significant communication barriers between departments is where Dr. Shows found her passion for communication combined with mathematics and engineering. Outside of her role at the law firm, she helps bridge similar, highly technical communication gaps. Her social media, particularly Instagram, serves as a science communication platform where she helps people overcome the fear and loathing that often comes with math. Her goal is to create a community and foster communication in the interest of changing the landscape of STEM education while growing inclusivity in an often gendered space.   During their discussion, Dr. Shows and Emily touch on unlearning gender code-switching, keeping your femininity when entering traditionally male-dominated fields, strategic gender-typing in the workplace as a norm enforcement mechanism, and strategies for converting bystanders into allies. Joining us in conversation today is Kuma Roberts, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at Arrowhead Consulting. Tune in to learn the difference between ‘DEI’ and ‘D and I’, and why the focus has shifted from the latter to the former. You’ll hear why everyone has something to contribute to the conversation around diversity, and how it doesn’t begin and end with skin color. Kuma is more concerned about policy than changing hearts and minds, and believes that when the culture of an organization changes, hearts and minds will follow. Next, we discuss fears organizations experience around communicating their values around diversity, and why it is necessary to overcome this in order to become successful. Kuma unpacks the business case for diversity and inclusion and reveals that much of her wisdom in this arena stems from her own years of experience. We discuss employee perception, inclusive language, pronouns, and email signatures, before exploring the role of top leadership buy-in on a personal and company level. Kuma explains what tokenism is, how to avoid it, and why prioritizing diversity can’t be understood as ‘helping’, but goes far deeper than that. Join us today! Learn more about your ad choices. On today’s episode, Michelle tells us the story of how she came to build a hugely successful business, offers listeners expert advice and encouragement, and gives us some key insights into the world of mergers and acquisitions. She offers listeners a valuable piece of advice: ask yourself why you entered your industry, before emphasizing the importance of doing due diligence before starting a business. Next, Michelle introduces us to the idea of buying an existing business rather than starting a new one in order to reduce risk, and tells us why the worst time to sell a business is during a catastrophe and the best is when it is thriving. We touch on Michelle’s book, Exit Rich, and the importance of building a business as an asset that you can sell. Michelle expands on this idea, highlighting the value of changing your mindset around entrepreneurship to create a machine that can run without you. She also outlines a core lesson in her book, known as the 'Six P’ method: people, product, process, proprietary, patrons, and profit. Tuning in, you’ll hear about the life cycle of a business, with Toys R Us as an illustrative case study, we dive into some of the main reasons businesses fail and, lastly, Michelle tells us why the failure rate for startups has decreased so drastically: innovation. If we only rely on the people who are being disenfranchised to solve that disenfranchisement, then it will never change. In today’s episode we speak with Director and Filmmaker Jen McGowan whose recent feminist horror, Rustcreek was lauded by Harper’s Bazaar as being “Exactly What Hollywood Needs Right Now”. Jen is the founder of Glass Elevator, an international skill-sharing, networking, and jobs resource for professional women in film and television. The organization has over 4000 members and has been featured in Forbes as well as named Best in LA by LA weekly. In our conversation, Jen shares how she originally trained as an actor because she was good at it and enjoyed it, but realized that she didn’t find the working life of an actor fulfilling and decided to pursue directing in order to have a more active career. She worked her way up by starting out in production roles that are generally more open to women. Jen reflects on how it was only once she actively started pursuing directing that she realized she had never worked with a female cinematographer, sound engineer, or first assistant director in her working life. Later we discuss Glass Elevator and how it has helped women connect, and we hear some of the success stories of women who have found work through the platform. We also speak about the #MeToo movement and why disenfranchised people alone can’t solve disenfranchisement, the dominant culture needs to get onboard. For all this and much more, join us today! Kate Day has had a long-standing love for the environment, in all its forms. Whether as an arborist or eco-research assistant, she always puts her best foot forward to ensure that our natural resources are protected and preserved. Kate's devotion to environment and community led her to Indonesia with Mercy Core where they work tirelessly on community projects related to sustainability. The Dovetail Workwear team was founded when three friends saw firsthand how poorly made most women's garments are in comparison with their male counterparts. Though many companies have taken it upon themselves to put out '”pink and shrink” versions of men’s wear claiming them to be female attire, these outfits don't offer any real solutions because they're not tailored for our bodies. This business was founded to create workwear that empowers women across many industries, making the apparel a tool of its own. The founders say they made their startup funds from pre-sales with friends and family as well as continuing research into solving problems for female workers in jobs like farming or construction, and the quality of their products is helping make women, and in part their communities, thrive. Not only does clothing have the power to impact our confidence and productivity, but, in industries like mining, it is also essential for keeping people safe. However, when items are designed only with men in mind, they can do the opposite of what they are intended for when worn by women. Our guest today, Alicia Woods, knows this all too well. As a woman working in what is considered a non-traditional role for her gender, she spent years stuffing her work boots with socks and avoiding drinking water so she wouldn’t have to use the bathroom when going underground into the mines. After one particularly unpleasant experience she decided that something needed to change, and she went about designing a coverall specifically for women. A few years later, after a very successful experience on Dragon’s Den, Covergalls was born! Join us today to hear Alicia’s story, her goal of disrupting the entire workwear industry, how Covergalls has grown (and is still growing!), the education and advocacy work being done by CG Aligned Consulting, the consulting branch of Covergalls, and why clothing is one of the essential elements to consider for the creation of a more diverse and inclusive workforce. Many factors prevent women from being represented in the trades, one of these being the perfectionism a lot of girls feel very early on in their lives. Not only does this stop them from trying new things, but it also makes them believe that being skilled should come naturally. One non-profit, Girls Build, is looking to overcome this by building curiosity and confidence in girls through introducing them to the world of building. Joining us today is Founder Katie Hughes, who shares her own journey to becoming a carpenter. We learn more about the summer camp program the organization runs and why they introduce girls to numerous trades. Katie also shares how they ensure inclusivity by reaching a wide spectrum of girls. While the camps teach practical skills, Katie talks about how trades get girls to embrace failure, think creatively, and work in a team. Although getting girls into the world of building is a desirable outcome, the confidence they gain to expand their horizons is what’s ultimately most important. We also hear about Katie’s new book, Girls Who Build, the inspiration behind it, and the story of how it came together. To hear more about this inspiring project, be sure to tune in today!
