What happens after you've had the courage to begin again?
In this episode of The Unapologetic Executive, I'm sharing what I'm learning in real time as I settle into a new city and navigate one of the biggest transitions of my life. After leaving Brooklyn, a place that shaped so much of who I am, I've discovered that starting over isn't just about finding a new home. It's about creating one.
We're often taught how to build careers, grow our networks, and chase professional success. But no one really teaches us how to build community, cultivate belonging, or create a life that feels like our own after everything changes.
In this conversation, I reflect on the difference between networking and genuine connection, the vulnerability of being the "new person" again, and why building a meaningful life takes patience, intention, and grace.
If you're navigating a move, a career transition, a new season of life, or simply searching for a place where you truly belong, this episode is for you.
In this episode, we'll discuss: * Why leaving a familiar place is about more than changing your address * The difference between networking and building authentic community * What it feels like to become the new person again * Why belonging is created, not discovered * How to embrace the slow, intentional work of building a life you love * A simple mindset shift that can help you create "home" wherever you are
Home isn't something you find.
It's something you build, one relationship, one routine, and one courageous step at a time.

What if beginning again isn't a setback—but an invitation?
After taking a step back from the microphone, I'm back to share where life has taken me, and why this season required me to choose presence over performance.
In this deeply personal episode, I open up about leaving my beloved Brooklyn, relocating, rebuilding my life in a new place, traveling for work, growing my network, showing up for family, and navigating the emotional roller coaster that comes with letting go of one chapter while embracing another.
This isn't an episode about having all the answers. It's about discovering that beginning again is one of the most courageous things we can do.
We'll talk about what it means to grieve a version of yourself, why reinvention is part of every successful woman's journey, and how to find confidence even when everything around you feels unfamiliar.
If you've ever wondered whether you're starting over, this episode is your reminder that you're not. You're beginning again, with more wisdom, more resilience, and a deeper understanding of who you are.
In this episode:
This isn't a comeback.
It's a new era.
Welcome back to The Unapologetic Executive.
This week on The Unapologetic Executive, we're talking about the hidden emotional cost of being the person who always "has it together."
The meetings get handled. The deadlines get met. The bills get paid. The emails get answered.
But behind the polished calendar and professional communication is a level of stress, mental overload, and emotional exhaustion that too many high-achieving women have normalized.
In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, this episode dives into what high-functioning anxiety really looks like for ambitious women, especially Black professional women who are often rewarded for endurance instead of wellness.
We're discussing: • Waking up at 2 a.m. mentally clocked in • Burnout disguised as ambition • Why productivity is not the same thing as peace • Mindfulness practices that actually help • The pressure to constantly perform, produce, and push through • What it means to unburden yourself before your body forces you to
Plus, I'm sharing the real-life practices helping me slow the mental spiral lately, guided meditations, breathing exercises, magnesium at night, and writing purely for emotional release.

Because surviving should not be the goal. Peace deserves a place on the calendar too.

In this episode of The Unapologetic Executive, Ritha Pierre, Esq. takes a direct and honest look at what "shrinking" really means in the workplace, and why it's not just a personal habit, but often a response to environments that demand it.
Drawing from lived experience, Ritha speaks candidly about navigating spaces where she was silenced, othered, and dismissed, not because she lacked capability, but because she refused to compromise her integrity.
This episode goes beyond surface-level leadership advice and addresses the deeper realities many high-performing women, especially Black women, face in professional environments: being labeled difficult for setting boundaries, aggressive for speaking clearly, and unapproachable for taking their roles seriously.
More importantly, this conversation reframes the narrative.
You are not the problem.
This episode is about recognizing the difference between adapting for effectiveness and shrinking for acceptance — and choosing to stand in your power, even when there are consequences.
This is leadership, without apology.
This episode marks a new chapter.
The Unapologetic Executive is an evolution of Freeda's World, not a departure from it.
In this opening episode, host Ritha Pierre, Esq. shares the story behind the shift and why these conversations are more necessary than ever.
Drawing from her lived experience in the workplace, Ritha reflects on navigating environments where she was silenced, othered, and dismissed, not because she lacked capability, but because she refused to compromise her integrity.
She also speaks to a broader pattern: the reality that many brilliant, qualified women are often pushed out of spaces simply for using their voice and standing firm in who they are.
This podcast was created to address what is often left unsaid: the real dynamics of leadership, power, workplace culture, and what it takes to succeed without losing yourself in the process.
Whether you've been here since Freeda's World or you're new to this space, this episode sets the tone for what's to come.
This is leadership, without apology.
So many women say, "I'm not burned out, I'm just tired." But what happens when tired is actually something deeper?
In this episode of Freeda's World, Ritha sits down with Dr. Nikia Smith, a board-certified anesthesiologist, wellness coach, and founder of She Is Fire Forged, to discuss the simmer before burnout. That quiet, constant state of depletion that often goes unnoticed because everything still looks fine on the outside.
Together, they unpack the subtle signs of simmering, why high-achieving women, especially women of color, are conditioned to ignore early warning signals, and what is really happening in the body when we keep pushing past our limits. Dr. Nikia introduces the idea of subtraction over addition, explains how self-worth becomes intertwined with productivity, and offers practical ways to intervene before burnout escalates.
This conversation is for the woman who feels functional but off, successful but stretched, and knows something needs to change before her body forces the issue.
This week on Freeda's World, we sit down with Dr. Brittney Anderson, a board-certified family medicine physician and the host of the Headed to Healthier podcast. Dr. Anderson is devoted to helping busy women create sustainable wellness habits that support real life, not fantasy routines.
In this conversation, we explore what changes in the body through the 40s and 50s, why metabolism can feel unpredictable, and how stress and constant pressure affect both physical and emotional well-being. Dr. Anderson shares practical daily shifts that fit easily into tight schedules and offers grounded guidance for building healthier patterns without guilt or overwhelm.
Listeners will gain clear, compassionate insight into midlife wellness along with simple tools they can start using today.

In this episode of Freeda's World, Ritha sits down with powerhouse attorney, advocate, and changemaker Nadine Jones, former General Counsel, co-founder of The Initiative: Advancing the Blue & Black Partnership, and a proud Howard Law alumna.

In this special episode of Freeda’s World, I introduce a brand-new series, A Seat at the Table. This series was born out of my own journey through work transitions, toxic environments, and the moments that forced me to question whether the “tables” I was fighting to sit at were ever meant for me in the first place.
As Black professional women, we’re often told to climb the ladder, enter the room, and secure our seat at the table. But what happens when that table silences your voice, ignores your contributions, or doesn’t align with your purpose? Maybe it’s time to stop asking for a seat and start curating our own.
I also share details about our upcoming event on Monday, October 27, 2025, in Brooklyn: an intimate evening of curated dining by Chef Nadege Fleurimond, a sommelier-led tasting of Black-owned wines, and an opportunity to connect with fellow Black professional women in a spirit of reflection, sisterhood, and joy. Pull up a chair, because in this series, the table is ours.

This week I am coming to you with a solo episode. Things have been quite interesting these last several months and as we enter into a new quarter, a new season, I wanted to revisit the topics of fear and worry.
Despite what is going on outside, despite our current employment statuses and despite the hardships, we still have to keep pressing on. We still have to be giving even when we are in a time of famine. We have to remember that fear is a result of failing to submit to God. It is a result of our unbelief.
We must learn to trust more and worry less. This is the only way that we can increase our piece and stand in prime position to accept the blessings that are waiting for us on the other side of that door. It's not easy and I struggle with the concept of "what is for you, will be for you" ever day. As many of us continue to face unemployment and receive rejection after rejection. Know that the right opportunity will come your way, you just have to trust more and worry less.

The mind is so powerful. Where the mind goes, the man will follow. If we allow our minds to go to "the dark place", then we will go to "the dark place". If our minds go to a place of confidence, then we will not only be led to confidence, we will be confident.
As we continue to strive in these uncertain times, remember to strengthen your minds. Feed them with positivity and surround yourself with positive people. In this episode, I talk about the dangers of engaging in "if only" and "what if" talk. In order to move forward to the land of confidence, we need to appreciate who we are, what we have, and what we will be in the future.

It's been. a few weeks but I am back! In this episode, I talk about the importance of women being present in the midst of trying times.
As people of color, we find ourselves yet again, in the midst of a war. We are fighting so many elements at the same time. COVID, racism, injustice, gender discrimination. We are going through it all, and it can be tiring. We are tired. But we cannot give up hope, we cannot give up the fight. So let's not. Let's figure out a way to be present and active. This week's episode was hard to get through. I am not happy. What's happening in this country is not ok. I am tired, but there is work to be done. Women of color are seen as the backbone of the community, and we are. We are the backbones of our community. We are the voice. When they kill our men, we are the ones who speak up, while still holding it together to care for children and our community.
We have to be the voice for ourselves. Women are victims of police brutality too. We are being murdered by the hands of law enforcement and this is not ok. On this episode, I air out my frustrations, while urging our sisters to find their voice. Those who can speak, speak, those who cannot there are other ways to let your voices be heard.
We cannot be silent. We need to continue the fight for justice. We need to continue saying the names of the countless women who have lost their lives at the hands of law enforcement. We need to #sayhername.

Isaiah 41:10 says "so do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
We are in some serious times and a lot of us are feeling the effects of the Rona virus. It is not a game in these streets. But in this time of trouble, all we can do is lift our eyes unto the hills because we don't know what else to do. It is so easy to fall into the sunken place. I mean to be honest, can you blame anyone who does. But instead of choosing to be in despair, I choose life. I choose to be healthy despite what my body is saying. I choose to be happy, even though people are dying left and right. I choose to be hopeful because God has brought us through worse.
Our hope is built on nothing less. Everything else is sinking sand. If he we do not have hope, what do we have? Take this time to strengthen your faith. Take this time to be positive and learn a skill, hone in on your craft, be a resource for your community. Choose to live and be productive.

What a week! Coronapocalypse has taken over and many of us are wondering whether we are living in a movie. I personally feel like I am living in a real life episode of the hunger games.
So this week I was placed on an unpaid leave for the next two to three months due to the coronavirus or what I like to call the 'Rona. This hit me hard as I have a growing child. I would have never in a million years thought that this would happen to me because I have always played it safe when it came to work. The one time I take a risk and take a job in a non governmental realm, i'm out on the unemployment line. To say it hurts is an understatement.
But, this is not the time to sit and feel sorry for myself (although you should take at least a day), there are action items that need tending to. On this episode I talk about how it feels to be unemployed as a professional woman of color, what you need to do to offset some of the financial burden, and how to stay positive in the midst of hardship and despair.

Happy Last Wednesday of Black History Month!
On this episode I talk about unrealistic life expectations and how laziness is oftentimes rooted in fear. This year I am embarking on a journey of deeper self discovery. Many of us are bursting with potential. But something is holding us back. That something is likely yourself. I told myself that from this point forward, I am going to claim it all! (in the name of Jesus of course). But in order for me to claim anything, I have to put forth effort. I have to do the work. I cannot expect to eat well without first planting any seeds.
Reflection: What seeds do you need to plant in order for you to reap your harvest?

Happy Wednesday Everyone! It's Valentines day week and I know how that can be for us singles out there. It's suppose to be a day of love but society has us thinking that if we are significant-otherless, we have to be down in the dumps. NEGATIVE. V-day is a day of love that can be shared with anyone we love, including pets! (Shoutout to my cat Chester!)
So as we report to work on Friday, do not get distracted by all of the flowers, chocolates and balloons floating around. Get your work done and plan a romantic evening with yourself and/or your friends and celebrate love your way way.
On this episode I talk about V-day in the workplace and what you can do to cope with V-day as a single. The advice is not lengthy or complicated, it's to just "do you boo boo!"

This week my highlight of the week ended up turning into this week's discussion topic. After weeks of trying to navigate this murky terrain called my job and wondering "what I do this for", it dawned on me that I am without a mentor.
I have always had a mentor, but over the last few years, I have just been going with the flow, learning a new industry and literally just making it. In all my efforts do my job and do it well, I forgot to pick up a mentor in my new field of law. I think before, because the work was somewhat routine (as litigation and arbitration can often be) I didn't feel the need top find a mentor. But now I am not litigating. It's a totally different role. I literally had an"aha!" moment in the shower and it all makes a little more sense now. I am without guidance and I need to get some guidance ASAP Rocky!
So on this episode, I talk about this "aha!" moment and the importance of finding a mentorship and how to properly go about locating your career guru.

The great Aaliyah once said "dust yourself off and try again". Now I am pretty sure when Aaliyah said this phrase in her song Try Again, she was likely talking about love and relationships. But even so, I think that she was spot on.
This week I am talking about the art of trying. I reacquainted myself with the phrase "if at first you don't succeed try try again". I think as professional women of color, we are so wrapped up in public opinion and perception. We are afraid to try new things out of fear of being perceived as someone who is "all over the place", "wishy washy".
There is a difference between being a hot mess and being someone ins pursuit of greatness. Some of us came out of the womb knowing what we wanted to be in life. Purposed from birth. Others, such as myself, are still trying to figure out where we fit in. However, in order to figure it out, you have to try new things. You have to be open minded and you have to be ok with the F- word, FAILURE.
Failure is a part of life. No one likes it. I sure don't. In fact, I hate it. But it is part of the process.
Tune in as I talk about the importance of trying and how "living up to standards" is ruining our lives.

As you can see FREEda's World made it to the new decade and we could not have done this without your help!
On today's show, I will be talking about the concept of taking marginal steps in order to achieve your ambitious goals. If you are anything like me, you are a dreamer. You dream big. You set big goals. But then you become overwhelmed by the very goals you set. Why? Is it because you dreamed too big? Was the goal too great? No, not at all. The issue is not the goal that you set, but the way you are approaching it. The problem lies in the way you are trying to achieve the goal.
If you are thinking to yourself, what the hell is she talking about, then tune in and find out how applying this marginal step approach has already set me on the right path to my own success!

December 4th a Queen was born. It's me, I am the Queen lol. I thank God for allowing me to see another year. There are so many people who do not have this opportunity and for this I am grateful.
I am a BIG birthday person. My love for birthdays is a result of spending many birthdays alone. Often times my birthday was forgotten and I would bake my own cake and sing happy birthday to myself. As soon as I became of age, I began celebrating my birthday every year to the fullest extent of my pockets.
However, ironically enough. As excited as I was/am for my bday, I begin to feel withdrawn, sad and defeated I’m the days leading up. Why? I can only attribute this to some form of birthday blues. In my conversations with random friends and acquaintances, I have come to find that this birthday blues thing is a real thing. It’s not just me (thank God). Tune in as I talk about the birthday blues and how I have tried to overcome this weird phenomenon each and every year.

Happy day before Thanksgiving everyone!
Every year family and friends gather together under one roof to eat, fellowship, give thanks, spill tea and to destroy self esteems. Yes, Thanksgiving, that time of year where you are confronted with all of your faults, failures and disappointments.
For women, this is a time of great anxiety as their love lives, uterus, natural hair journeys and other seemingly odd life choices are scrutinized in front of company.
In years past, I have been a big proponent of the thanksgiving clap backs, but this year, I am trying a new approach. It is that time of year again. Daylight savings and the arctic chill of winter has us feeling like we are in an episode of the walking dead. Many of us are having a hard time understanding where this sudden bout of fatigue, lethargy and unwillingness to be social is coming from. Well my friends you may be experiencing seasonal depression. For those of you sideyeing this post, seasonal depression is in fact a real thing, and it can have some serious effects if not addressed properly.
Now that we have established that seasonal depression is a real thing. What do you do about it? More importantly, how do you function and engage with others in the workplace when you have no desire to do engage with other humans?
Personally, I am so over the angry black girl narrative. But recently I found myself creating a different narrative for myself. The antisocial black girl. On this episode I talk about seasonal depression and detail my workplace human engagement model. Having to engage with co-workers when you are going through depression is difficult. It took everything in you to get up for work this morning. Now you are expected to engage, with people? It's painful. But fear not! Tune in, and learn how you too can maneuver the workplace painlessly while dealing with your seasonal depression.

This week, I am joined by my girl Ruth Jean Marie, who is the founder of The August Project and the creator of a new Nike sneaker called Uprising, which tells the powerful and inspiring story of the Haitian Revolution.
Today's episode is here to not only highlight Ruth's amazing work, but to inspire all us working women out there wanting to make change and create impact in our communities.
Often times, we as professional working women of color are so caught up in the here and now that we forget to dream. We do not make time for imagination. We do not dare greatly because we have convinced ourselves that it is silly envision.
Ruth is a professional working woman out here in these streets. Like Ruth, you too can create. You too can be a visionary, and with hard work and determination, your vision can become a reality.
Challenge for the week: Take some time today to imagine. If you could be anything what would you be? If you could do anything, what would you do? Then, sit back and think about what’s keeping you from from reaching those goals. Finally, put pen to paper and outline what you need to do in order to become that person you are envisioning.

Cancer. It sucks, and more and more young professional women of color are being diagnosed at rapid rates. Unfortunately due to the high cost of medications, the overall cost of living, those afflicted are still forced to hustle and bustle in the workplace.
This week I have the pleasure of bringing on my dear friend and past FREEda Woman of the month, Jaymie Bowles. Jaymie is a cancer warrior currently fighting stage 4 lung cancer. She is a 9-5er and on the side she owns and operates her radio station, WJMS radio.
I have heard of positive people, but Jaymie tips the cake. Tune in as she shares her story on how she is able to remain positive and still be out here working essentially two jobs while fighting cancer. Jaymie's story is nothing short of inspirational and whether you are someone who has been recently diagnosed with a horrible disease, or you just need inspiration to continue moving forward in your daily life, this episode will surely give you the boost you need!

Motherhood. It is something that most women want to experience at some point in their life. The older we get, the more that desire deepens. Unfortunately for most women, the prospect of finding a decent man to procreate with is very slim. Dating in 2019 is a national crisis, leaving many smart, educated women of color wondering if they will enjoy the journey of motherhood.
This week, I have the pleasure of speaking with Nefertiti Austin, author of the recently published book "Motherhood So White: A Memoir of Race, Gender and Parenting in America." In this book, Nefertiti examines adoption and child-rearing as a single black woman confronting gender and racial bias.
I know that in this stage of the game, many of you are considering motherhood but are feeling discouraged because you are single and believe that you cannot possibly do it on your own. This episode is for you! Tune in to hear how Nefertiti embarked on her journey to motherhood as a working, educated, single, black, women, with perfectly good eggs.

In the words of Destiny's Child "It's just emotion taken me over..." (I would continue on with the lyrics but they don't apply here). But I digress. Emotion is a powerful thing. Emotions can take you from zero to 100 real quick. Emotions are a necessary part of life because they help us communicate with one another.
But when emotions go unchecked, when we let them get out of control, they can be the cause of our downfall. A simple misunderstanding or lack of communication can then be escalated to a discipline or worse.
On today's episode I talk about how not to let emotions get the best of you in the workplace. It is not easy cause these colleagues be wildin out. But there are a few things you can do to check your emotions and prevent yourselves from losing your job due to a quick turn up. There is no such thing as a quick turn up at work. In the end you may still have your job, but your reputation maybe forever tarnished. I have had to learn myself that sometimes you just have to take a moment, breathe, assess the situation and then respond accordingly.
How do you check your emotions at work? Feel free to comment!

Well today, we are putting the focus on our sisters in science. This week I have the pleasure of talking with Dr. Stacia Nicholson, PHd. Stacia is a real scientist who recently completed her PHd. in toxicology. She is also the founder of Aliquot The Science Spot, a website where she educates people on current issues in science.
There are so many preconceived notions as to what a scientist is, and what a scientist looks like. Tune in as Dr. Stacia talks about her experience being a woman of color in science and the many challenges she faced getting to the PHd. After talking to Stacia, it is very clear that the struggle is real for all of us women of color, regardless of your discipline. Whether your office is made of 100 employees or 2 employees, the challenges are still very present.

Happy Wednesday Tribe! This week I am talking with my dear friend and staunch supporter Julia Cenatus! Julia and I grew up together in the church and after all these years, I recently found out that she is a blogger!
In March of 2019, I was honored to be featured on Julias blog "Check It Out By Jules". On this episode Julia shares with us her journey to blogging while being a 9-5er and how it all got started. Interestingly enough, it was a workplace issue that jumpstarted her blogging career! You don't say... Lol. It is funny how adversity brings forth talents we didn't even know we had.
Julia has taken her craft to the next level by providing the community with meaningful reviews of her experiences attending black curated events, shopping at black owned companies and more. What sets Julia's blog apart from the others is that she shares her authentic experience from the moment she enters the building to the second she walks out of the door, thus creating a narrative for those of us needing to know all the deets before we engage. What a time saver! If you are busy like me, we don't always have time for surprises!

I think I’m certainly showing my age by the title of this week’s episode but En Vogue certainly was on to something. On today’s episode I talk about non-conformity and how it is ok to go against the grain.
For those of us in our thirties and beyond, it is so easy to find ourselves doing things that we honestly don’t want to do, or engaging in things we can careless about. This can be anything from accepting a role at work that everyone thinks you should accept but you yourself know that it isn’t the right move for you. It can be succumbing to societal pressures of marriage and children when all you truly want to do is focus on your career. It can also be intentionally dimming your light in the workplace, because the culture dictates that you keep your head down and stay under the radar.
In order for we as women of color to truly develop into the individuals we were meant to become, we have to resist the urge to conform. We have to free our minds from the noise of friends, family society and really dig in to ourselves to determine what it is that we truly want. If what you want goes against the grain, then so be it. Take a stance. Be comfortable with your stance and live your life in the way that is best suited for you and your circumstances. Free your mind, and the rest will follow...

On this episode of FREEda's World, I am speaking with the amazing Marjorie Vail! Aside from being my spirit animal, she is also a Haitian sista!
Marjorie forayed into the pageant world in her mid-thirties but has been enjoying it ever since. Her belief is that pageantry can be a great way to promote and bring awareness to a cause and not just about what is on the contestant’s surface. Marjorie had the honor of being Mrs. New York International 2015 where she used her reign to further promote Stillbirth Awareness. Personally affected by stillbirth, losing a son 15 years ago, Marjorie fell into depression for a while and found that volunteering and serving others was what saved her life and sanity. Marjorie holds a MA in Childhood Education from New York University (NYU) and MS in School Counseling from Alfred University. She has been in the field of education for over 15 years. Currently, Marjorie is a Literacy Coach at a Title I school in Brooklyn, NY. Marjorie currently lives in Brooklyn with her husband Roman of 17 years and their son. Think back to that time you were in undergrad or grad school. Do you remember your advisor? Was your advisor a person of color? Better yet, was your advisor a woman of color? Did you feel connected to your advisor? Do you feel as if they prepared you for the workforce?
If I had to guess, I would say that many of you did not have an advisor who was a woman of color at your college or university campus. And although most of us ventured off to meaningful careers, we would have appreciated a little more preparation of what to expect in the real world.
It is imperative that our future professionals be prepared for the professional world. It is important that they know what's up. For me personally, I think about how much further I would be if I had a sista sit me down and give me the real tea as to what actually happens in the workplace. If I was just given a little more guidance as to how to manage expectations, how to work with superiors, how to hold my own. I would be SO much further.
Now of course, I appreciate the struggles of the past because they have strengthened me for the future. But still you know what I mean. This week I am joined by Jennille Cineas, LMSW. She is a licensed social worker, professor, student advisor and the owner of Klips Haircare. On today's show, Jennille will talk about her role as an advisor and how this role is critical in shaping the future of the professional world.

I know that you have all heard the phrase "we all have one good book inside of us". It is true, especially as women of color. Our experiences are rich and they need to be shared. Our knowledge, our wisdom, these are gifts that should not be taken to the grave.
I have heard many say (I am part of the many), one day, I will write a book. But why can't one day be today? Well, one reason is life right? We are out here hustling trying to make it. Working countless hours to pay the bills and live a decent life. We have kids we are caring for, husbands to keep happy. It is a lot. Where is there time to write a book? How would I even start?
Welp! This week, I am with the fabulous, 9-5 working woman by day and creative mind by night, Sheina Cenatus, who is the author of not one but two books. Sheina who goes by Shay Cena will share with us her road to authorship as well as provide tips on how you too can be an author. We do not have to wait for retirement to write your book. Unless you are living under a rock, I am sure you are aware that we are in the thick of election 2020 season. With the presidential debates heating up and the current president acting up and showing out, one can't help but to engage in political discussions.
I mean everyone has something to say about the state of our political climate. I am all for commentary, but political commentary is something different. That type of engagement can get you cut in these streets.
So what about the workplace? Is there room for political talk in the workplace? Should you engage and if so much? Tune in as I discuss talking politics in the workplace and how you should limit it, if not avoid it all together!

On this week's episode I address one of the topics discussed on last week's episode, work anxiety, fear due to lack of job security. (that's right you have to go back and listen lol) In this economy, there is no such thing as job security, regardless of what sector you are in. However, despite our fears, we must still report to work. We have bills to pay and passion projects to fund. Living in this kind of fear is certainly unhealthy and to be quite honest, who wants to go to work with a lump in their throat every day?
Tune in as I discuss some ways to reduce these work place anxieties. What it all comes down to is how much effort are you willing to put in to ensure your value at your place of employment? Long are the days where one can just show up to work. Now a days you not only have to show up, but you also have to show out!

Some of you maybe asking yourselves, "where did Ritha go?" On this episode, I talk about where I have "been", my current mental space and being in the "dark" place. We all have our moments where we struggle with self acceptance and belonging. I think that it is important for people to be transparent about their journeys. I will always say this, Instagram is a liar, and although many of us are not actually stunting and fronting on the gram, it’s all about perception. That picture of you at the beach smiling tells people that you are living it up. Meanwhile you are dying inside. You never know who is watching and listening. But more importantly, you never know who you might be saving with your story.
Call to action: Be honest about your journey. Share not only your successes, but also your losses. Strive to motivate and inspire rather than be popular.

On this episode of FREEda's World, I talk about the importance of having faith and staying the course. When things get tough, most people's knee jerk reaction is to fix the problem. But not all problems are meant for you to fix. Sometimes your troubles come to make you strong and all we need to do is hold on.
For the last few months I have been on the struggle bus. It got bad at one point, and I responded how I normally respond, with my tools ready to fix. But this time I couldn't fix my problems away. I had no choice but to be still and let the maker work things out for my good. I had to exercise faith and I had to stay the course.
It is hard being an adult. And there is something depressing about struggling when your life is seemingly together. It just messes with your mind. Tune in as I talk about remaining positive even while in the storm and the benefits of being still, letting go and letting God.

On this episode of FREEda's World, I have the pleasure of speaking to Professor Tanya K. Hernandez, a former professor of mine at Fordham University School of Law.
Professor Hernandez and I engage in a conversation about her latest book, "Multiracials and Civil Rights: Mixed Race Stories of Discrimination. "In her new book, Professor Hernandez explores the question of how to pursue racial equality in a growing multiracial world. The growth of a mixed race population has led some commentators to proclaim that multicultural discrimination is distinct in nature from racial discrimination that non-multicultural persons experience, and that as a consequence a whole new approach to civil rights law is required."
Tune is as we talk about insights from the book, the global perception of race, discrimination in the work place and much more!

This week we are discussing returning to corporate america after leaving to pursue your passion. Over the last few years we have heard hundreds of stories of women leaving their corporate jobs to pursue full-time entrepreneurship.
These stories are both motivational and inspirational. But what happens when business becomes slow? When priorities and focus change? What happens when you are forced to return to corporate?

Have you ever seen a motivational story that made you second guess your whole existence? Like the story of the young boy who was homeless and was admitted into 8 Ivy league schools and received over $500,00 in scholarships? As great as this story is, doesn't a part of you sit back and think, man, what was I doing with my life? I had a roof over my head a car, parents... What was my excuse?
I am sure that most of us have had tis thought at some point. On this episode I will talk about the young woman Briana Williams who recently graduated Harvard Law School with a baby in tow, and how often times people use these motivational stories to shame and put down others rather than using these inspirational stories to motivate and uplift.
Tune in as I discuss how motivation can backfire and lead to individuals feeling unaccomplished, and unsatisfied with where they are in life.

Welcome Back FREEda Fam for another episode of FREEda's World!
Tis the season for everyone to be in your business. The sun is out, the weather is getting better and people are nosy! Why is it that men and women a like, love to comment on a woman's ability and willingness to have children?
This week I am talking about the pressures professional women of color face when it comes to getting married and having children. Many of us have mapped out our lives. We have clear goals. We have a path. We are trying to stay focused, keeping our eyes on the prize. Some of us do want to get married and have kids at some point.
But our society is relentless. They are so intrusive and sometimes they can be downright insensitive. Tune in as I talk about how friends, family and society as a whole are adding unnecessary anxieties and pressures on professional women to procreate, and how this pressure is affecting our mental health.

This week we are talking about loss. Many of of us have experienced loss at some point in our life. It is not easy and depending on who you lost, the impact on your life can be debilitating.
I lost my grandmother in 2013. she raised me as her own. She was my everything. I literally never conceived a life without her. So when I lost her, my world literally fell apart. I was broken and if I am being honest, I still am broken.
Over the years the grief of losing my grandmother, has really took a toll on all aspects of my life. Work included. So I began to think, how does one cope with death and still be present at work?
A few years ago I was scrolling through social media and I saw that a friend of mines from college had lost her mother. Come to find out, she had lost her father only a few years prior. Not too long after finding out about her mother, I found out that she lost her boyfriend. In my mind, I thought how is this woman able to function let alone go to work?
On this episode, I am joined by my friend Joi Britt, LCSW and host of The Joi of Social Work Podcast. Joi is going to share with us her story of life after loss. She will discuss some of the challenges she faced at work and how she was able to be present at work while dealing with her loss.

This week I am joined by my good friend Jellisa Joseph. Jellisa was recently nominated for a prestigious award. She was so excited for the nomination. However, instead of basking in excitement, the first thought that came to her mind was "do I deserve this".
This form of self doubt is very common amongst professional women of color. We do it all the time! But why? Why do we have such an issue with accepting accolades and awards? Why can't our first inclination be, "wow I did it! I knew I could do it!"
Tune in as Jellisa and I have a very candid conversation about our experiences, the social oppression of women of color by not only "the man" but also by ourselves.
We don't have all the answers, but we explore different ways to not only slay self doubt, but to find ways where we as women of color can do a better job of recognizing and celebrating each other outside of our silos.

FREEda Fam! This week I am talking about the art of no. Often times we do this thing where we say yes to everything. We say yes to more work, we say yes to our bosses, to our co-workers, our friends family, we never say no.
Some times you just have to say NO! Why? because you are not a machine. Saying yes all of the time has consequences. It can hinder your ability to complete your given tasks. It can cause you to burn out. It can make you sick.
With all of that being said, I know it is not the easiest thing to tell your supervisor or your client no. In fact it's scary. What I have discovered over the years is that, the issue is not in saying no. It's all about how you say no. Tune in as I talk about the different scenarios where saying no may be necessary and how you can deliver the message without losing your job.

On this episode of FREEda's World, I recap the hit ABC show Black-ish, season 4, episode 2, which focused on postpartum depression. I also discuss my personal journey with postpartum. Postpartum depression is a real disorder affecting real women. It is nothing to be ashamed of. It is nothing to be embarrassed about. As a community, we must engage in these types of discussions in order to effect change and overcome the stigmas surrounding mental health issues and the black community. *FREEda Woman of the Week: Dr. Natalia Cineas _____________________________________________________________________ Resources: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) The CDC has a feature on maternal depression which focuses on depression among women before, during, and after pregnancy. On today’s show I recap my recent experience attending the first annual Haitian Ladies Weekend, that took place this past weekend in Washington D.C. The Haitian Ladies Weekend is a by product of the hard work and vision of its founder Nadine Duplessy Kearns. Nadine began a tradition of brunching with fellow Haitian Women 12 years ago with the sole purpose of creating a space where women can connect, build and support each other. What started out as five women quickly grew to over 60. 12 years later the tradition still stands, but this time Nadine and her team decided to do it even bigger and host the first annual Haitian Ladies Weekend which included the first ever symposium hosted at Howard University. 175 Women from all over the United States, and Haiti, came together in sisterhood to celebrate, uplift and empower each other. Women are so often portrayed as being haters, manipulative, envious and jealous. It’s not uncommon for you to hear that women do not work well with each other. This weekend was a clear juxtaposition of that. Instead, what I experienced this past weekend was women from different age groups, at different points in their careers, sharing their trade secrets and giving sound advice. It was mentorship on steroids. In this episode, I share some of the highlights and sticking points of the weekend as well as give some of my own sound advice on women empowerment, self love and promoting your personal brand. *FREEda Woman of the Week: Audace Garnett, victim advocate Be sure to check out our website www.freedawomennyc.com to shop for the latest workplace accessories and while your there check out our blog to learn more about who we are, our social impact initiatives and upcoming events. October is Domestic Violence awareness month. On today’s show, I am joined by my dear friend and former colleague Audace Garnett. Audace and I both worked in the Domestic Violence Bureau at the Kings County District Attorneys Office were I served as a Prosecutor and Audace as a victims advocate/ social worker. There is a huge stigma surrounding Domestic Violence, in that Domestic Violence only affects poor and low income communities. The reality is that Domestic Violence affects everyone. It does not engage in class discrimination. Professional women of color are some of the strongest people to walk this earth. We are smart, we are fierce, and we don’t take B.S from anyone. Or do we?... On this episode of FREEda’s World, Audace and I talk about Domestic Violence and attempt to debunk many of the myths regarding Domestic Violence and the professional working women. We explore why it’s not so easy to walk away, what if anything a coworker or supervisor can do if they suspect that someone in the workplace is a victim of Domestic Violence, as well as what resources are available if you or someone you know are a victim. *FREEda Woman of the Week: Fashion designer, Layo Gbadamosi of Layo G Be sure to check out our website www.freedawomennyc.com to shop for the latest workplace accessories and while your there check out our blog to learn more about who we are, our social impact initiatives and upcoming events.
