Each week, we’ll be talking to and learning from some of the best in the comms business… and trying to break down what is working and what’s not anymore when it comes to getting a message out and getting heard.
In our sixth and final episode in Season One, we turn our lens on our communities and explore effective ways people are using communications to make a difference in and engage with their communities. We feature a bang up bench of long-time communicators, including Raleigh's digital visionary when it comes to parks and recreation, Cara McLeod, Go Triangle Comms Director Mike Charbonneau, ABC11 Anchor/Reporter Joel Brown, Wake County Commissioner Sig Hutchinson and INDY Week Editor Jeff Billman. Listen and learn as they share their professional wisdom on what tactics and strategies are working today to tap into and be heard in our communities.

Among the hardest places to actually be HEARD these days - ironically - are political statehouses. North Carolina's is no different. In this podcast, we bring on one of the best political reporters the Tar Heel State, WUNC radio's Jeff Tiberii, as co-pilot and turn to an array of political practitioners and powerhouses to figure out the best way to influence policy-makers and have an impact on Jones St. (home to the NC Legislature). We interview Jane Pinsky (Exec. Dir. at the NC Coalition on Lobbying and Government Reform) about how to sell issues to lawmakers AND Rep. Graig Meyer (a Democrat from Orange and Caswell counties). Meyer is one of the best communicators in the legislature - on social and in person. Both he and Pinsky share critical tips on breaking through the noise at the General Assembly. We also talk with opposition researcher Matt Duffy, field operations go-to Kathryn Vandegrift and long-time comms veteran Mitch Kokai. Their insights are invaluable when it comes to political campaigning and communicating.

In Episode 4, we dive into some of the hardest stories to sell to the local media, voters or (sometimes) ourselves - stories about the Environment. We talk to professional environmental advocates to find out what's working best for them when it comes to earning media, changing minds and moving the policy needle. Guests include Upper Neuse River Keeper Matt Starr and Environment NC Executive Director Drew Ball. Interviews on this episode include top state environmental Lobbiest Dan Crawford and one of the top environmental legal minds in the country, Frank Holleman with the Southern Environmental Law Center. Our hope is that the wisdom in this 45 minute conversation will help everyone do a better job of standing up for the Environment - from committed evangelists and professional advocates to weekend warriors eager to make their occasional elbow grease go a little farther.

In our third episode, we explore the matter of race. One of the hardest thing for a lot of people (of all races) is talking about issues where race is front and center. We pull in professional communicators to help talk about how to talk about talking about race. Tru Pettigrew helps law enforcement around the country better understand communities they serve; Kerelle Sampson is an Executive Producer in television news; and Mitch Kokai is the communications lead at the conservative John Locke Foundation. Through their insights and experience as well as a lineup of amazing and diverse interviews (including Sen. Floyd McKissick Jr., Al McSurely and Angella Fraser), we explore ways to better communicate around and about race. Listen to this critical conversation, learn from the extended interviews below and then join in online - @campsightsc (on Twitter and Facebook).

Again, we're joined by a wonderfully insightful cast: Raleigh business and political stalwart Joe Stewart as well as veteran journalists / communications pros Amy Johnson and Tamara Gibbs. We cover a ton of ground when it comes to how businesses are effectively getting their messages out in today's noisy environment.
