Money doesn’t always buy happiness and doctors are not immune from mental health issues.

The Medical Journal of Australia recently reported that one in five medical students reported suicidal ideation in the preceding 12 months and 50% of junior doctors experience moderate to high levels of distress.

But it doesn’t stop once you fellow, consultants attempt or commit suicide every year.

My episodes typically focus on improving our financial literacy, today we’re going to improve our emotional literacy because happiness is not directly related to our bank account.

Today my guest is Hugh Van Cuylenburg. He’s the author and founder of the Resilience Project. Through engaging programs and practical strategies, he’s teaching Australians how to become resilient in our new and demanding world. Today my guest is Charlie Tian. Charlie is author of the book Invest Like a Guru.  One of my favourite investing books.

Heavily invested in high flying technology stocks, he got absolutely pummelled in the dot com crash of 2000.

As he picked up the pieces of his broken portfolio and analysed his errors, he discovered value investing..

In 2004 he created Gurufocus where he began tracking and sharing the portfolios of some of the world’s greatest investors. Since then he has moved to provide an in-depth analysis of company financials and some amazing stock screeners.

In today’s interview, we will discuss value investing, Charlie’s journey, his book and how he identifies and invests only in good companies.

Today was my first day back at work since the operating restrictions have been reduced. I’m so glad to be back doing what I love- looking after patients and hanging out with my theatre teams.

So what does that mean for the podcast?

Firstly I want to say a big thank you to all my listeners.

I won’t be putting out 4 episodes a week as I have been for the past 3 weeks but you can expect even higher quality content in the future.

Because of your support I’m now able to invite higher profile guests.

I never thought that my little podcast made on a set of gaming headphones and edited on Garageband would reach so many people. We are about to hit 10,000 downloads.

Those of you who have emailed me, liked and commented on my Facebook posts and shared episodes with your friends have really kept me pushing ahead and creating the content I hope you find useful.

My goal for this podcast has always been to educate and empower doctors to make better financial decisions.

I have my financial planning diploma, but I’m no expert, and neither am I financially free.

What I am doing is learning from experts and sharing that knowledge with you.

You can think of me like a senior med student who understands the system, they can’t actually treat patients, but they know where to look for help.

The upcoming episodes will build on the “5 Pillars of Personal Finance” that I covered in episode 10.

It’s my holistic approach to money.

The 5 pillars has 2 defensive and 3 offensive moves.

We covered the defensive moves with wills in episode 13 and personal insurance in episodes 14a and b.

Now we can focus on the offensive moves- income, investments and independence or financial freedom.

So get ready to dig deep into shares, real estate, venture capital and other cool stuff.

I’m waiting for my first hater but I know that if I stay true to my goal of helping you guys stay ahead in the money game, I’ll be able to sleep well at night.

Between episodes you can check out the blog at medicalmoney.com where you will find the show notes and some of my random thoughts.

As you all know I’m a Swiftie so I’ll finish with a quote from Taylor herself

“No matter what happens in life, be good to people. Being good to people is a wonderful legacy to leave behind”

Thanks again. Stay safe and send me an email if you’d like to connect.

On this podcast we share tips and tactics to help doctors earn, grow and protect their money.

This podcast is recorded on March 28, 2020. Over the past month the world as we know it has been turned upside down.

COVID-19 has infected half a million people worldwide with 23,000 deaths.

Here in Australia, we have three and a half thousand confirmed cases and the end is nowhere in sight.

Businesses have been shuttered and all non-urgent surgery has been cancelled from April 1st.

As an anaesthetist in full-time private practice, I’m effectively unemployed until further notice.

With all this spare time on my hands, it's a great time to start a podcast.

If you’re interested in learning how to optimise your finances please subscribe to this podcast. Also, head over to my blog www.medicalmoney.com and subscribe to stay updated.

If you know a colleague who might also find this information useful please share this with them.

I’d love to get your feedback so send questions, comments and recommendations to me at andrew@medicalmoney.com
