When it comes to race nutrition Chappo is the man to listen to. He has a wonderful ability to wade through the misinformation and present concise, evidence based advice to the athlete. On top of this, Chappo has tested the science on himself and landed on the most practical nutritional strategies that actually work.
This week Haddy and Chappo dive into some nutrition specifics in the lead up to the Sydney Marathon. They cover:
Get your pens out and soak up the pearls of wisdom in this episode. Your marathon PB might depend on it!
Haddy also reviews the Asics Metaspeed Edge+ with Sean from Runnulla. Think he's found his race shoes!
Wolf and Haddy catch up with Steve Redfern for a live recording at Runnulla, hosted by the Godfather Sean Tindale.
Steve chats about his participation in the Sri Chinmoy Self Transcendence 3100 Mile Race, which takes place each year in NY. It involves running around a half mile block in Queens, from 6am to midnight each day for 52 days, to achieve 3100 miles or 4989km! The journey was eventful, he lost 80% feeling in his feet and toes and was still recovering six months after the race!
We also discuss his debut in the Barkley Marathons, one of the more obscure Ultramarathons in the world, which took him eight years to get to the start line. The race requires the participants to complete 5 loops of 20 - 25 miles each, while searching for 13 books hidden throughout the course, each loop has about 5000m of elevation! If that's not hard enough, it was -9 deg C!
Steve's a humble legend and we thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to interview him and share his stories.
Matty and Scott Hazelton catch up to preview the 2023 Lonely Mountain Ultra.
That’s right, it’s back in 2023 and it will be bigger and better than ever. With distances of 11k, 22, 30, 50k, 50m and 100k, runners tackle the foreboding peak of Mount Canobolas (the Lonely Mountain). With the race village pumping below, this year with the completion of capital works, the summit will be transformed into a real party atmosphere with the main aid station perched right at the top.
The village can be spotted 600 vertical meters below. Onsite camping, or a quick drive to town for any number of accommodation choices, why not set aside the weekend of 14th/15th October 2023 and come and run in the Lonely Mountain Ultra. Check them out on Facebook, Insta and of course their website. Entries open with an early bird discount in early 2023.

This week Haddy spends some time on the couch at the Carrington Hotel with Clinical Psychologist Nadine Davies. Nadine shares a rare insight into the psyche of the elite runner and also the practicalities of being married to one (previous guest: Brendan Davies). We get down to the nitty gritty of elite home life, travelling the ultra world and being a podium standard support crew.
She tells us all how best to cope with the disappointment of all those recent race cancellations and some great strategies to deal with the little voice on your shoulder (or the extra one in your head).
We try to untangle the web of Wolfman's personalities with mixed results and we also uncover how crazy you really need to get to become an ultramarathon runner!

From the outside, it may seem like a classic ‘I quit my job to travel’ millennial story but Wolf & Haddy reveal how Jennah has forced her fears into submission and started a new life that has taken her all over the world including living in Kenya for 3 months volunteering with a Maasai women’s group.
JL chats about being a contestant from Australian Survivor, we get behind the scenes and chat to her about the challenges of living rough for two months practically starving!
It turns out she is quite the masochist, taking on two multi day desert ultra-marathons to raise money for charity with very little preparation. She explains how the power of the mind plays such a vital role in getting through these physical challenges and the day to day struggles of life.
During the episode Wolf chats to ‘The Godfather’, Sean Tindale from Runnulla to review the Brooks Ghost. Sean also explains those pink budgie smugglers he struts around in!

Running & racing is a way of life for Chris and his wife Greta who run the family friendly Rejoov Runners from Sydney’s Centennial Park.
Chris has a long affinity with many of Sydney's iconic running events. He first completed Sydney's City to Surf when he was just 9 years old, running 63mins. In 1987 at the age of 13, he ran 53mins and he has competed in every single City to Surf since (over 30 of them) with a PB of 45:44, he has run 25 consecutively under 49mins!
Chris's first marathon was the 1993 Melbourne race. We're not sure why he was so keen to start running marathons at the age of 18, but he loved it and was happy to finish in a 3:13.26.
Chris has gone on to compete in over 30 marathons including Berlin, Chicago, Rotterdam, London, Tokyo, New York and local ones - Sydney, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Melbourne & Canberra with a PB of 2:29:44 coming in 2002 in one of his four Berlin finishes. All his subsequent marathon times since debut have been under 3hrs.
Chris has managed to maintain his longevity with running via a balanced approach to life and to the sport.
At 45yrs, he continues to compete across a wide spectrum of events. Whether it's a 5000m track time trial, 10km road race, half marathon or marathon, or a 100km trail or road race.

The Outback is a large expanse of rough, barren desert that can cause serious problems when exposed day after day to shadeless, intense heat. With a July 2019 start date, we're taking advantage of the cooler, drier months to make the crossing, avoiding extreme temperatures and washed-out roads.
While there is a more direct route connecting Darwin to Adelaide via the Stuart Highway, we've chosen to avoid the more trafficked paved routes in favor of dirt roads. This approach keeps us away from potential dangers like increased traffic, while also introducing the logistical difficulty of scant resupply options and many hundreds of miles without services. More intriguing, yes. More difficult, most definitely.
It's worth noting that we - Katie and Henley - are in no way professionals. Professional goofballs, that's about it! We're just audacious dreamers with a healthy dose of optimism that things will work out and a desire to push ourselves. That said, we are experienced outdoors-people with several thousand miles of solo and tandem travel of this nature, and we have inspired heads on our shoulders. We understand the risks of the project and are responsible and intelligent enough to figure it all out with passion and humility.

The brain limits our endurance capacity before our body needs to physically slow down, essentially the brain is wired to keep us safe, this consequently limits our potential.
Rory shares psychological skills you can train and develop into your daily routine to improve your overall performance. He explains how the brain perceives effort as a threat and identifies how we should change this perception into a challenge so we can embrace it and move toward it.
He talks about finding the ‘flow state’, the optimal state a person can be in when competing.
Rory explains how breathing practices can help manage performance anxiety pre-event.
He talks about managing the ‘inner critic’, the voice in our head that gives us negative feedback. He explains the benefits of reassurance prior to events with self talk such as; why am I hear, what have I got to lose? He explains how to ground yourself in the situation during a race and do a self-check to realise you are not feeling as bad as you think you are.

Sue and Jake take us on an adventure talking about their self supported races they complete that can take anywhere from four to seven days in remote areas involving hiking, running, mountain biking and kayaking. One race they completed recently went for seven and a half days and they had a total of nine hours sleep!
Based on orienteering, these athletes have to choose their own adventure to navigate from one location to another, collecting checkpoints as they go. They travel through remote wilderness in freezing conditions, end up in confined places such as caves, add in sleep deprivation and things can and will go wrong!
