This is an important issue for hunters and shooters that is only going to become more prominent throughout our lifetime. Lead is toxic, and has been banned in many industrial applications. Lead is still used in the majority of ammunition, but we are seeing increasing bans on lead hunting ammunition. Is this an attack on gun rights and hunting and fishing opportunities? Or is this a chance for hunters to help the environment? I am torn on the issue. I discuss all this and more. Continuing on the Ballistics Basics series (Check out episode 72 on Twist Rate if you want to start from the beginning), Pliny describes the differences between internal, external, and terminal ballistics. Every projectile in flight has three major periods of ballistics that can be analyzed, and different features or properties are emphasized based on the desired outcome. Too many hunters and shooters gloss over the science and the "but why", as they learn about shooting.

In this episode, Pliny discusses some of the difficulties of reloading when components are in high demand and hard to find. With a little bit of creativity and flexibility (As long as you are still being safe and conservative) you can use some unusual combinations to still achieve the results you are wanting. Pliny got started loading 9mm practice ammunition, but quickly ran out of small pistol primers. When some small MAGNUM pistol primers started showing up in retail stores, Pliny was able to use them by reducing the powder charge to create a safe working load.
DO NOT ever duplicate someone's recipe without "working up" and conservative testing. Always be safe and conservative when reloading, especially when using unusual combinations that are not recommended in any reloading manual.
Daniel and Pliny went out on an impromptu fishing trip, and ending having to fix a trolling motor, outboard motor, and have a lot of issues with tangled lines. Despite all the struggle, they still caught a channel cat on a jugline, cooked up a great meal, and had a good day.
The offseason is the perfect time to tweak and tune and practice with your hunting bow. I started off just wanting to put on a pair of fresh strings, then after talking to the guys at a local proshop and chasing some compatibility concerns, I ended up changing a lot more. This felt a lot like the kids' book "if you give a mouse a cookie". One change led to many more; I ended up swapping my strings, arrows, quiver, stabilizer, and rest. I used half of my sight from last year and "frankensteined" it to another sight body to have a sight that is both a beefy multi-pin and a mover when needed. Hopefully you can make some tweaks to your bow and get out and start practicing before the season starts to draw close.
First, forgive me if this sounds like it was recorded in a tin can. This was a Zoom meeting that captured the webcam audio instead of the audio from the nice mic. In planning a hike, Jared was asking me a few questions about boots and sock. We took the conversation online, because I imagine a few of you have had issues with blistered feet as well. Hopefully this helps!
In this episode, Pliny reacts to a negative comment about a hunt, and about how the Adventure One crew is unethical or just a bunch of pretenders. It is easy to be a Monday Morning quarterback and review things in hindsight, but the position of claiming the moral high ground and disparaging others is ofter not realistic, nor helpful to hunters who are actually in the field getting it done. This is the first time I have ever recorded an episode about a negative comment. I generally try to stay positive, but there absolutely is some stuff in here worth discussing.
Pliny and Daniel get a little rowdy and remove some of the filters when talking about what hunting (or direct meat acquisition in general) means to each of them, and how there are many different levels of interaction and meaningfulness. We also discuss the place for and temptation of cheap gear, when high-quality equipment can serve you much better in the long run. Of course, this discussion meanders through jokes, memories, and examples from deer hunts, hog hunts, and chasing Nilgai antelope on public land.
I am kicking off a new mini-series called "Ballistic Basics" where I explain concepts, measurements, and important practices or theories related to shooting. Most of these concepts will have an emphasis or practical application in long-range rifle shooting, hunting, or reloading, but most will also apply to shooting a variety of weapons and disciplines. In this first "Ballistic Basics" episode, I am discussing twist rate: what the term measure, what it measures, why it is important, some historical examples, and even how to measure the twist rate of your own gun. In this episode, Pliny discusses how people in Texas can now carry a handgun (concealed or openly) without a license, including who can or cannot carry, and places and signs that restrict the carry of weapons. He places this conversation in the general timeline of Texas firearm progress. Texans now have options, and Pliny explains the advantages of carrying without a license, as well as carrying with an LTC. This podcast is not legal advice and should not be interpreted as such. If you want to learn more about the License to Carry, or how to stay legal while carrying without a license, please ask an instructor at a professional gun range near you. These instructors are often the most knowledgable (often even more than the attorneys) on these subjects and can explain them well.
On a recent hunt, I successfully took a whitetail doe with a very effective neck shot. I tend to do this about once a year. I also tend to kill multiple wild hogs each year with a shot to the head. Yet, head and neck shots are often viewed as taboo or unethical in the hunting community. Like many things, there are a lot of wrong ways to do it, and a few right ways to do it. While I would never recommend taking a head or neck shot to a brand new hunter, I enjoy having the option. In this episode, I discuss when and why I do it, with some helpful guidelines in making that decision.
This is the third and final episode of the TENIENTE series. Pliny and Daniel discuss the final days of the hunt in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, chasing whitetail deer and Nilgai antelope. The guys enjoy one of the tenderloins from Daniel's bull while telling stories of this challenging hunt.
The is the second episode of our three-part TENIENTE series in the lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge. After Daniel's quick success on day one, things started to get much tougher. We discuss deer sightings, hunting in thick brush, buying more coolers, and switching from hiking gaiters to thick snake gaiters. We hope you enjoy this episode and stay tuned for the next one!
Pliny and Daniel were drawn for a South Texas public land hunt where they were allowed to take whitetail deer, feral hogs, and exotic Nilgai Antelope. This Is the first episode of a three-part series telling the stories of the hunt, including the triumphs, failures, and funny moments along the way. Pliny met up with the guys from the Hooked Hunting youtube channel for a rugged archery elk hunt in the backcountry of Idaho. This was a six-day hunt with everything on our backs. Archery equipment, public land, no outfitter, we were determined to get it done in the most rugged way possible.
While I did not end up narrowing a bull, this still turned out to be a powerful and challenging adventure in the mountains. In this episode, Pliny tells the story of the hunt, with a bit of reflection along the way. Daniel and Pliny reflect on a recent adventure where they hunted hogs, tested new gear, shot long range precision rifles, dodged thunderstorms, shot pistols, and ate great food. Add in a bit of ranch work on cameras and feeders on a new permission property in west Texas and it made for a great weekend!
I just shot in my first long range precision "sniper" style shooting match. I don't really see myself as a competitor, but this seemed like a fun way to give myself some pressure to continue to improve my shooting in the off-season and to continue to learn about long-range shooting.
In this episode, I describe the match, my own personal performance, and what I learned from it. I hope this inspires you to get out and shoot more, and maybe even fine some form of shooting competition (pistol, rifle, bow, or shotgun) in your area!
Daniel and Pliny get together over beers to discuss a rifle build concept - combining a lightweight hunting rifle with a match-accurate long-range precision rifle. The rifle on the table is a Christensen MPR with a Nightforce NX8.
In this episode, I discuss some principles of Everyday Carry and how a mysterious chemical called tritium can enhance the capabilities of everyday objects by making them more visible in the dark. Tritium is highly regulated, but is ultimately very safe and has a lot of great applications.
This one is way out in left field, but I know many in my audience are patriots and preppers, and generally concerned about what is happening to this country and what is happening to our money. I may do more topics like this, or I may never cover it again, all depending on response. Eight months ago, there was a national coin shortage. We have nearly all forgotten about it. Why did it happen? will it happen again? Are we being told the truth?
In this episode, Pliny recaps a recent hog hunt and then talks through the anti-gun executive actions just announced by the White House. These actions will not improve public safety, and will not reduce crime. To gun owners, some of these are completely meaningless, and some are extremely worrisome, likely another step in restricting law-abiding and safe gun owners in the United States of America.
I quit my job in the hunting industry. Before starting my new gig, I took a few days to go enjoy the outdoors on my Southwest Texas hunting lease. I looked for turkeys, had a great hike, shot my rifles out to 600 yards, killed a boar with my bow, weathered a hail storm and cooked some good camp food. This was a great reminder of what it is all about.
Pliny and Daniel travel out to the rocky Trans-Pecos region of West Texas for the last weekend of Texas general deer season. This is a new spot that neither has visited before, with a tiny bit of e-scouting, the guys hope to knock down some deer in this last hurrah at the end of the season.
Kyle and Pliny discuss recent cooking and hunting, with some gun season success and some optimism for the remainder of the season.
In this episode Pliny discusses his muzzleloader setup for hunting whitetail deer. This includes the "origin story" or the reason why someone would choose to hunt with a muzzleloader in 2020 when modern rifles are much easier, and typically more accurate. Pliny tells the story of a small buck he killed with a muzzleloader, which was special since it was his first deer harvested on public land.
Striving for increased reliability and accuracy, Pliny experimented with several different loads to find a bullet and power combination that was reliable, powerful and accurate. Now it is gun season and Pliny has that same muzzleloader slung over his shoulder, trying to knock down a buck.
Pliny, Kyle, and Daniel push through the struggle on the last day of the Laguna Atascosa Adventure. In the morning, they team up and go all-in on a spot that held Nilgai antelope the night before.
Later that day, they scout a completely different area, and one of the guys gets an "up close and personal" shot at a wild hog, right at last light.

Well, folks, I got the monkey off my back and got my first whitetail down for the 2020 season. I know you probably shouldn't start the story with a spoiler like that, but I am excited that I got one down, and honestly, that is probably why y'all want to listen to this episode.
In this one, I describe each sit of my opening weekend hunt. There were some frustrations, and some mistakes that I learned from, but ultimately It was a success. I was running my camera and will be putting the hunt on youtube, so keep an eye out for the video!

Welcome to another episode of "Big Game Basics" where I discuss specific elements of big game hunting. The first BGB episode was about the moon; this episode "the wind" is critically important to the way big game hunters move and hunt. For as long as men have been hunting, understanding, and working with the wind has been a critical part of the potential for success.

The Big Game Basics series is focused on short topical conversations relating to particular aspects of hunting deer and other large game animals. In each episode, I pick up a new topic that is often talked about in the hunting community and attempt to boil it down to a lesson that you can actually use. This series is great for new hunters, as well as experienced hunters just wanting to brush up on the basics. Some of these topics are very scientific and factual, while others are just my own opinions and preferences gathered through observation and experience.
In this short episode I discuss how the moon phases can affect big game hunting. Is a full moon good or bad? Does the moon phases affect the rut?
A quick recap of Pliny's Montana elk hunt and some valuable lessons learned about gear and making the shot count. Unfortunately, I did not kill a bull and come home with loaded coolers. I was extremely close, and one little step that I forgot was the difference between elk steaks and tag soup.

Unfortunately, a lot of southern hunters proudly serve their friends and families deer meet that is tough, chewy, bitter, or even bloody and metallic tasting. It is not appreciated, and can turn people away from venison and deer hunting.
Take proper care of your meat to ensure that it is delicious and tender. There are obvious many different methods, and some work better in different areas, and on different animals. In this episode, I describe my process of caring for meat and still letting it age and tenderize, even in the south where it is usually too warm to hang meat. When your meat is properly handled, aged, and stored the only challenge that remains is not overcooking it.

Pliny and Kyle talk about a recent trip to do some work on a property prior to deer season, including setting up stands, feeders, and cameras. On this trip we also hammock camped, shot a steel barrel with a broadhead, caught some bass, broke a crossbow, and had a lot of fun!
Daniel and Pliny get together for some cold beer and pork tacos and tell stories from the recent hog hunt in central Texas. Shooting pigs is always fun, especially in the off-season when you have new gear to test out, new buddies to take hunting, and want some extra meat.

In this episode, I urge people to be more aware of (and more personally involved in) where the meat they consume actually comes from. If it is purchased in a store, it didn't come from the store - be aware of what it is, how it was cared for, and how it got there.
I purchase fruit and vegetables and ingredients from the store, but I try to source as much of my meat personally as I can. To me, this is one of the biggest reasons why I hunt deer and hogs in Texas. I also advocate fishing, and trading. Any way you can be closer to the food source, with fewer factories and processing facilities involved is always good.
Another episode for rifle dorks. In this podcast episode I discuss the details of my long range precision rifle setup. With the goal of hitting small targets at significant distance, I wanted an extremely accurate rifle that is fun to shoot and doesn't break the bank. My goal wasn't to build a "budget" gun, but I wanted to keep the cost reasonable, and still get awesome results. I discuss everything from the ammo I use to to optic, the bipod, and even the sling. In this episode I am joined by Kyle and Mario who tell the story of their successful south Texas Axis Deer hunt. Axis are beautiful, jumpy, and delicious. They are an exotic so they have not season or limits. They are often found on high fence ranches, but are not free ranging in much of south-central Texas.

Hey adventurers! it has been way too long since my last episode. A lot has happened, including a trip to south west Texas with Daniel where he was able to tag a great doe and I was able to shoot my buck. Unfortunately not all went as planned with my buck. This is the story of what went wrong and what I was able to recover from it.
Pliny Kyle, and Daniel have some laughs while Kyle tells his hunting story where he doubled up on whitetail on a morning hunt from the ground in central Texas during general season. This is at least the third time Kyle has shot a double since he has been hunting whitetail deer.
Nate returns to Adventure Talk Live (the video version of the adventure talk podcast) to tell fishing stories from the mountains of Colorado and and the gulf coast of Florida.

In this episode, I prepare for gun season and describe my deer rifle, including the features and the though processes and research behind selecting those features. I focus on how I set it up, the ammo, optic, and sling that I use, and why this is a great combination for my style of hunting. I have been bow hunting for the last few weeks, but it is now time to turn my attention to my trusted boom stick and put some more deer meat in the freezer.

I got back from Idaho and went to test my bow before the Texas archery opener. When I went to test my bow, my peep fell out. This quick story is about turning a last minute equipment failure into confidence when heading into the field.

It is great to have a day away from work, but the root of independence day means much more. Think about your liberties and freedoms - how you are expressing them, or letting them fall away. I took a trip down to my south Texas deer lease. My goals were to build a box blind for rifle season and to build a feeder setup, designed to feed corn and protein through the summer - of course with cameras on it the whole time. In this episode, I discuss my plans and tactics, and tell the story of my recent trip.

In this short episode, I discuss reason for hunting coyotes from both a sporting perspective and a view on conservation and assisting ranchers. Coyote hunting can be very challenging and equally beneficial when applied appropriately.

I am joined by Kyle and Paige to tell fun stories from our Michigan Whitetail hunt. This was the first time Kyle or I had hunted in Michigan and this was Paige's first whitetail hunt, so of course there were funny moments and struggles, but we all ended up with deer on the ground and full coolers headed back to Texas.
