As baseball celebrates another World Series champion, we decided awhile ago to read the classic baseball book, "Ball Four" by Jim Bouton. A sensation, when it was released in 1970, we discuss how much Bouton's book still shocks and what seems relatively tame nowadays. A must read for baseball fans but Bouton's talent as a writer makes for an interesting read for not just the devoted fans of America's pastime. Along the way, we discuss our history with baseball, favorite moments, and biggest heartbreaks. Enjoy!

This week we are delving into Nathaniel Hawthorne's 1852 novel, "The Blithedale Romance." We didn't know what to expect going into this novel, and we both were surprised by how relevant the novel still is. Special episode this week, as we were lucky enough to interview author Dale A. Jenkins and discuss his book "Diplomats & Admirals." Jenkins' book goes in depth on the failed diplomacy between the USA and Japan, and then moves forward to the attack on Pearl Harbor and the book culminates with the Battle of Midway. We both agree this book is full of fascinating facts and conclusions, well worth the time of any WWII history buff. We hope you enjoy this interview as we discuss the book in detail.

Much like a complex board game, Dorothy Dunnett's novel "The Game of Kings" is difficult to understand but with effort and patience the reader is rewarded with a complex story and engrossing characters. We both agree this book is probably not for everybody but we discuss why we're glad we read it. A large part of why we liked the book is the main character, Francis Crawford of Lymond, a memorable character whose backstory and mysterious methods make for a rewarding tale. Finally, it's in our nature to get sidetracked, so hopefully you enjoy a good digression on Dave Matthews. Enjoy!

We may not act like the literary theory type, but tonight we're giving it our best go. We're discussing the endlessly interesting novel, "The Red and The Black," by Stendhal. A psychological novel rooted in the Bourbon Restoration, Stendhal gives us an intimate portrait of Julien Sorel and post Napoleonic France. We talk about the plot, characters, and our favorite sections but we also discuss the idea of "mimetic rivalry." An idea Matt read about in a book by Rene Girard, and an idea and concept that is very interesting to think about and discuss.

Terry Pratchett was prolific, beloved, and a bestseller many times over and yet neither of us had read anything of his. Well we corrected that this week by reading "Hogfather," book 20 in Pratchett's comic fantasy series Discworld. We discuss the humor and meaning behind this work and discuss Pratchett's impressive output and quality. Highly recommend from both of us.

We're behind and it's the shortest month of the year, so we nominated short stories and novellas for the book of the month! - Minding the gap. We all have notable gaps in our reading, identify 3 classics that you will read in the new year.
- Paving the way- Like how it's probably best to read The Odyssey before tackling Ulysses, is there a work or area that you need to bone up on before tackling a book that's on your tbr?
