Tracking the Draft with Craig Button is a weekly 45 minute podcast hosted by Dean Millard featuring former NHL General Manager Craig Button who is currently the Director of Scouting for TSN. We will focus on the upcoming NHL draft in a number of different ways.One segment, titled Top Shelf Talent will feature a projected 1st round pick. Another segment will focus on players projected to go after the first round, titled The Next Wave. Time Machine will be a segment where we look at past drafts with stories from Craig and comparisons to a current draft prospects. A short Prospect News segment and a trivia contest will wrap around the draft discussion between Craig and Dean.

With the 2021 draft just around the corner we focused on the likely top pick as well as two players who could be later first round picks.
Owen Power has been a tower of power all year as the #1 prospect. The Michigan Wolverine solidified his top spot at the men's World Hockey Championship helping Canada win gold. I asked Craig about his offensive potential and more.
Zach Dean skated with Gatineau of the QMJHL this season and looks to be trusted, safe player that will help in both ends of the ice. He might not have high end skill, but he rarely makes mistakes and will be strong down the middle.
Shai Buium is off to Denver University in 20222 and was excellent for Sioux City in the USHL this season. A terrific decision maker who is calm under pressure, there is a lot to like about him.
We also discussed how players who lost a year of development should be judged and evaluated heading into the draft and somehow got talking about bullring!

The 2021 draft is full of defenceman at the top end, which reminds me of the 2012 draft, but this year it's the 1995 draft that Craig thinks of. We discussed Matthew Beniers being one of the more complete players in the draft - not flashy, just effective - and some of the names he gets compared to. Samu Tuomaala is a sniper from Finland who has a more complete game than people give him credit for and showed that during the U18s. Aatu Räty is one of the more talked about players in the draft, as he was ranked number 1 last year and now is at the back end of the first round for a lot of scouts.
Craig also unveiled his top 6 of his top 64 which comes out July 8th on TSN and some fun mock drafts he and Bob McKenzie will be doing.

Luke Hughes is part of a log jam of defencemen near the top of the draft. A great skater with confidence, but what will his offensive production be like? He's heading to Michigan next year so his development curve is on track. Brennan Othmann has a great shot, hockey IQ and uses his size to protect the puck well, but some question his skating. Does Craig? What was a season spent in the Swiss League like for the one time Flint Firebird of the OHL? Fabian Lysell has a ton of speed and only needs an inch of space to blow past defenders and create a scoring chance. He played most of the year in the SHL and while he didn't produce points, he did earn valuable experience.
We also discussed how the Tampa Bay Lightning have built a potential Stanley Cup defending team by drafting well in rounds 3-7 and we remembered Tom Kurvers, a hockey legend in Minnesota, a 1986 Stanley Cup Champion and a past Hobey Baker Award winner for the great man he was.

From a smooth skating defenceman to a skilled forward and a all around glue guy who can play on the top line we jumped around a bit this week. Craig and I also discussed Jack Eichel's trade value and Cole Caufield in the playoffs.
Simon Edvinsson is the type of player you pay to watch skate. His mobility allows him to defend, but what about his offence? Craig and I offer some comparable that NHL and UFHL GMs should be excited about.
Fyodor Svechkov was a steal in the UFHL futures auction, going for just $20 and now a projected first round pick, means profit for the scout who owns his fantasy rights. Craig compared his all around game to one of the best Russians to ever play in the NHL.
Xavier Bourgault might not be the flashiest player, or a guy at the top of draft lists, but Craig feels he has the right game to be a really good NHL player and potentially on a top line. There are first line stars and first line complimentary players and Bourgault has a lot of 'glue guy' qualities to his game.

We are just over 7 weeks until the draft and we continue to track players leading up to it. This week it's a Canadian Dman playing overseas, a Canadian forward playing in the U.S.A and a Swedish forward playing in his home country.
Brandt Clarke is a big blue liner who Craig has ranked #2. He normally plays in Barrie but this year was skating in Slovakia. Kent Johnson was a freshman at Michigan in the Big 10 of the NCAA this season. He projects as a strong centreman but did play the wing this year. Oskar Olausson is a Swedish forward who does a lot of things well and could very well outplay his expectations with his slick hands. I also asked Craig about improving skills and the lack of combine right now.

This week we discussed what might be coming from the Oilers system that could help add depth. The three prospects/NFTs we explore are Jesper Wallstedt, Chaz Lucius and Anton Olsson. Wallstedt is the top rated goalie for the draft and I asked Craig when he might be ready. Lucius is a pure goal scorer who is going to the University of Minnesota to develop after an injury plagued season. Olsson is a Swedish defensemen who might have a chance to outplay his expectations, but could settle nicely as a #3 blue liner.

This week Craig and I discussed the importance of the recent Under 18 World Championship during a season with so few viewings. However basing so much on one viewing can be dangerous. Zachary Bolduc of Rimouski has always been a goal scorer, but this year developed his game even more. Isak Rosen has an NHL calibre release and Benjamin Gaudreau was a bright star on a struggling Sarnia team last year and led Canada to gold at the U18s.

Craig has revealed his Top 32 for the 2021 draft with a top 40 to come later one and we zeroed in on three players that made the grade. Matthew Coronato has been getting a lot of buzz in the UFHL and NHL scouting communities and rightfully so. A terrific goal scorer who is off to Harvard University. Sebastian Cossa is one of three goalies who made Craig's top 32 and his numbers were incredible with the EDMONTON OIL KINGS this season. He looks like a goalie, not the Michelin Man in net and he makes saves as opposed to just letting the puck bounce off him like a trampoline. Dylan Guenther is Sebastian's teammate in Edmonton and at one point was touted as a potential #1 overall pick for 2021 and while Craig still sees him as a top line player, he might be more of a complimentary top line player, who will still go very high in July.

A special day for this week's show as we are previewing the final of the World Under 18 Hockey Championship between Canada and Russia. It's a rivalry on ice that is terrific no matter the level and when it's best on best it's Top Shelf! This week we explored two star players on each team not eligible until the 2022 and 2023 drafts.
Ivan Miroshnichenko scored two beautiful goals against Finland in the semi-final by freezing the Finish goaltender each time, it's a high end skill that not a lot of players have. Shane Wright has done everything right at this tournament and before and Craig thinks he would go first overall in this year's draft if he was eligible, so I asked him if Wright is a generational player. Matvei Michkov has an astonishing 11 goals in the tournament so far and isn't draft eligible until 2023 so think about what he could do to the all time record book with his patience and unpredictable (from a defenders POV) offensive abilities. Connor Bedard is a guy who most think will go first in 2023 and for that reason he was granted exceptional player status in the WHL, becoming the first player to ever do it. He's not making the decision makers look bad, as he dazzled in the semi-final and we used the term AI when discussing his attack.

With Craig in Texas for the Under 18 World Championship we came up with a fab five pack of players taking part. From Brandt Clarke an offensive dman who has #1 defenceman written all over him to Simon Edvinsson who might not be as offensive as Clarke, but the Swede will be very valuable to an NHL team with his mobility and size when it comes to moving the puck and defending. We chatted about a couple of Russians in Fyodor Svechkov and Nikita Chibrikov, two highly skilled but different forwards. Svechkov has a really good all around game, while Chibrikov has a higher offensive ceiling, but both have made an impact in the tournament so far.
To end the segment we brought it back to Canada and looked ahead to the 2022 draft with Shane Wright. The Canadian captain scored an even strength, power play and short handed goal vs Sweden, displaying his all around game, and Craig had a comparison to one of the best players in the NHL right now.

It was the World U18 edition this week as we took a look at 5 players who will be suiting up for team Canada next week in Texas. Three of them are eligible for the 2021 NHL draft, the other two are for 2022 and 2023 respectively.
Francesco Pinelli, Brett Harrison and Conner Roulette will play various roles while wearing the Maple Leaf, and some of it might be different from what they do on their regular teams. Connor Bedard is the top pick right now for the 2023 draft, but don't suggest to Craig he's too young to play a top role. Shane Wright is being considered as the top pick in 2022, like Bedard he received exceptional player status in the CHL, but hasn't played this year as the OHL has been shut down to due Covid19. Will that have an impact of his play at the start of the tournament?

It was all about NHL bloodlines on this episode as we focused on three players whose fathers suited up in the NHL and had successful careers. Josh Doan is currently playing for the Chicago Steel and soon will be playing for his home state school at Arizona State University. Chase Stillman will be a member of Canada's upcoming Under 18 team and spent some time playing in Denmark while the OHL has been shut down. He's certainly not afraid to challenged defensemen one on one. Red Savage is part of the U.S. National program and will play at Miami University next season and projects to be a really smart, two way forward.

I asked Craig how many players he thinks have a realistic chance at going first overall in 2021 and who they are as we discussed the players in question. The three forwards we discussed from three different countries all have a unique skill set. Dylan Duke can flat out score. James Malatesta projects to be a smart winger, while Dmitri Zugan won't be a first round pick, but is tracking to be a valuable asset to a playoff team down the road.
We also chatted about the trade deadline from a team evaluation of it's own prospects to how Covid 19 and quarantines might impact this year's trade deadline.

Justin Robidas is a point per game player right now in the QMJHL with Val-d'Or and while he doesn't do anything spectacular he also doesn't have any holes in his game. He thinks the game really well, much like his father Stephane who played almost 1000 games in the NHL. Dultak Scouting Service owns this NFT in the Ultimate Fantasy Hockey League.
Aatu Raty was leading the hype machine at this time last year as the number one pick. That's not the case right now, but don't mistake that for thinking he won't be a very good player. Smart scouts let others discuss the numbers in Liiga or the fact that he was cut from the World Junior team in Finland - Joe Thornton's rookie season and Marty Brodeur not making Canada's WJC say hello - while others rely on his game to game improvements in a pro league. Nikita Chibrikov is going to be a fun player to watch, whichever team is lucky enough to take him. His ability to change gears and push back defencemen when crossing the blue line is fantastic and then he really goes to work. We focused on 3 guys who likely won't be top 5 or top 10 picks but have the potential to make some people ask, 'how'd they get him there?' Logan Stankoven was purchased as an NFT for $520 in the scout auction and while he's dropped in a lot of rankings, Craig always comes away impressed by the Kamloops Blazer of the WHL.
Cameron Whynot has already doubled his point production from his rookie season with the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL, and Craig sees a current Toronto Maple Leaf blue liner when he watches him play. While not physical, Whynot is steadily getting better in all areas. Matt Coronato simply scores goals. 36 in 39 games this season with the Chicago Steel of the USHL and Craig relates how some scouts complain that all players do is score goals with a hilarious story about Ken Holland.
We also debated a top 5 pick for $1000 in the USHL vs 10 NFTs for $100 from rounds 3-7 and beyond. I asked Craig about his scouting plan the rest of the season and how to spot subtle plays by skaters or goalies.

We kicked things off discussing that a July draft looks like it's happening and how that impacts everyone involved. Don't ask Craig to put an asterisk beside this draft though, everyone is in the same situation. We also chatted about potential changes to the NHL draft lottery and whether it's being motivated by the 'good of the game' or 'the good of my team' when it comes to GMs in the NHL.
The three prospects we profiled are Sasha Pastujov, one of the best passers in the draft and a guy heading to Notre Dame of the NCAA next season. Same Tuomaala of Karpat J20, a winger who's never met a shot he's afraid to take, but it's not just the shot, it's the positions he gets himself in to take those shots. Zachary L'Heureux is a player that maybe isn't the same type of power forward that a guy like Josh Anderson or Tom Wilson, but he still has plenty of power and skill in his game. Think of a cross between Matthew Tkachuk and Brad Marchand.
I also brought up with Craig about being patient as a General Manager, whether that's in the NHL or the UFHL or any fantasy hockey franchise. Knowing your own team better than anyone is the first step, which allows you to be patient or pounce on an opportunity to improve your team.

The future of the 2021 NHL draft is up in the air and Craig and I discussed a few different possibilities as well as 3 top notch players for whenever it's held. William Eklund is having a terrific season as an draft aged player in the SHL. Corson Ceulemans reminds Craig of a current Golden Knight, while Carson Lambos took on huge responsibilities on the back in in Winnipeg last year for the WHL's Ice.
I also asked Craig if there is a clear cut #1 for 2021 and we chatted about an expansion team in the Ultimate Fantasy Hockey League selling for $10,000 USD, and of course this isn't your Dad's fantasy league. This week's show was awesome as it was mostly about goalies. We took a look at a sure fire first rounder and some others who will be knocking on the door as well as a NCAA free agent who's nickname should be shut out.
Jesper Wallstedt is a Swedish goalie who will go in the first round, it's just a matter of whether it's inside or outside the top 10. He's playing in the SHL right now. Sebastian Cossa is the back stop for the Edmonton Oil Kings and some have him ranked in the first round. He has massive size which scouts drool over with goalies. Triston Lennox just missed being drafted last year and despite being undrafted, he's the Toronto Marlies roster for AHL games this year, a first for me to see a situation like that. Dryden Mckay is currently stonewalling the WCHA of the NCAA. His Minnesota State Mavericks are undefeated in conference play and he has 8 shuts outs this season.

We discussed how good entry level contracts can be huge in the NHL and UFHL (no fans to complain about rebuilds) providing those players can play, the NHL is not a development league.

To me the NHL has an opportunity to do the right thing by the prospects, scouts and teams by pushing it back a year and then making it a back to back weekend summer event. As for the players in 2021 we chatted about there was a common theme between Luke Hughes, Matthew Beniers and Mackie Samoskevich. We also weighed in on some of the moves Duckman's Domination made in the UFHL this week that involved adding picks and prospects that Craig recommended.

As the World Junior Hockey Championship draws closer players and coaches from different countries have been ruled out. We discussed how things will work when teams start arriving later this week to prepare for the bubble. We also looked at the tournament through the eyes of Maple Leaf and Jets fans, both teams have some serious talent and may be torn during a couple of games of who to cheer for.
As for the three mini profiles, we looked at a big Swedish forward who you might see in the tournament. Oskar Olausson tore up the J20 league in Sweden to start the season and was quickly promoted to the SHL. Ryder Korczak just missed the 2020 draft and it gives him another year to impress scouts, which he did last year on a really bad Moose Jaw team. Sean Behrens is going to be that player that teams regret passing on because of his size. The American defenceman simply controls the game and is the type of player that allows coaches to sleep at night.

In our three mini profiles we looked a sniper in Brennan Othmann who has duel citizenship in Canada and Switzerland. A tenacious forward in James Malatesta who scored 20 plus goals as a rookie in the QMJHL. A skilled Swede who gets knocked for his defensive play and has Craig pulling his hair out.

As we wait for seasons to get going we are doing mini profiles and chatting about the news in hockey. This week, it wasn't good as the world lost Howie Meeker and Jeopardy host Alex Trebek, both had a massive impact on TV and Alex Trebek even did some narration in the 60's of some Stanley Cup matches. Craig presents a tribute to both in Jeopardy style.
We also paid our respects to those who have fought for our freedom on Remembrance Day here in Canada and discussed Russia sending a U20 team and winning the Karjala Cup in Finland.

While we make our way through the current hockey season or off season for some we are giving you glimpses of what you can expect for the 2021 draft and beyond. This week we started off discussing the Coyotes renouncing the selection of Mitchell Miller following a massive amount of public pressure regarding the disgusting acts of bullying that continued past the act Miller was charged for. The Ontario Government's announcement of no body contact for the OHL season seemed awfully premature over the weekend, and it was. We also chatted about the situation some Junior A teams are facing as CHL players are looking for a team to suit up with until their leagues start.
The five players we took a look at ranged from defenceman of Canadian and Russian heritage, a scoring Swede and Canadian and an all around American centre that simply fits anywhere in the line up.

In our final show before the NHL Draft we jammed in 6 mini Top Shelf Talent segment. We discussed Lucas Raymond who Craig called a sneaky goal scorer and is known more for his playmaking abilities. Hendrix Lapierre might have been a top 5 pick if not for injuries and will be a player to watch during the first round as he could go high or slip to a contender. Connor Zary and Seth Jarvis are both Western Hockey League goal scoring forwards who are both vying to be the top WHL player selected while William Wallinder is a big, smooth skating blueliner from Sweden and Dylan Holloway has speed, size and strength, a pretty good combo for a centre.

In Top Shelf Talent we explore one of the top goal scorers in the draft as Alexander Holtz spent the year playing against men in the SHL and doesn't need a lot of space to score. In the Next Wave it was Dmitri Zlodeyev who played in the MHL for Moscow and the Russian winger is an all around solid player who knows what he's capable of and does it really well. He likely won't be a top 6 guy but with a willingness to improve he'll be a dependable player for whatever organization grabs him and he could be one of those guys you wonder about if he slips. Tyler Tullio of the Oshawa Generals in the OHL showed he could score and also play with top end guys after a trade brought in a Predators first round pick. In Time Machine it was USNDT centre Thomas Bordeleau who received praise from Craig for his ability read the game and create advantages as well as use his skating to keep opponents thinking. Zion Nybeck is a small shifty winger who put up 1.6 points per game in the Swedish J20 league and Craig explained the competition in that junior league as well as what Zion does and what will need to happen to develop. Cross Hanas of the Portland Winterhawks has some flare for creativity but might now have enough finish to be considered a top goal scorer at the next level. He can be an effective forward though, once he starts adding muscle to his good size frame.

Noel Gunler has a wicked release that seems to fool goalies quite a bit as the puck is there on his stick one second and gone the next. However Gunler himself has a knack for disappearing just as much as the puck does off his stick. Some see him as a first round pick, but Craig isn't sold because of how inconsistent he has been. Tyler Kleven meanwhile is a big, mobile shut down defenceman, something every team wants. He's not going to be a big point producer or a top pairing guy, but skates well and could be a penalty killer at the NHL level. He's also going to the University of North Dakota where he's have plenty of time and access to the latest technology to put muscle on his frame.

Jack Quinn of the Ottawa 67s is the top goal scorer in the draft according to Craig and when you get a look at his game it's not hard to see why. His anticipation skills are off the charts, whether it's getting in behind the defence or following up on a play and getting a tap in. He scored more than 50 goals this year in Ottawa and also had almost 40 assists so don't overlook his play making abilities. I asked Craig about any problem areas in his game and the answer makes you wonder why other scouting platforms don't have him rated as high as Craig.

Craig calls Jack Quinn the best goal scorer in the draft but warns not to forget about his creative side when it comes to setting up teammates. His anticipation is off the charts and Button can't find any deficiencies in his game. That can't said the same of Noel Gunler who has been called "polarizing" and "wildly inconsistent" so Craig told us his reasons why. Gunler has a terrific shot, but won't be able to use it in the NHL until he starts putting forward more consistent play. Tyler Kleven on the other hand gives you all he has, which is a lot when it comes to shutting down opponents. He isn't going to provide offence, but will will a back end roll on the blue line and could help out killing penalties. These guys are valuable, especially when they skate as well as Tyler does. He's also off to UND where he will get plenty of time and space to add muscle to his tall frame. In Time Machine Craig compared a current Brandon Wheat King with a one time Leaf and current Avalanche member, and some former Wheat King names came up in conversation as well. For 2021 we looked ahead at Zachary Bolduc who is ranked 14th by Craig right now for 2021 and Craig told a terrific story about how he ended up there and what he will do after Alexis Lafreniere moves to Broadway. Our trivia question involves UND and our poll question @DuckMillard is about the best pure goal scorer in the draft.

Tyson Foerster is a sniper from the Barrie Colts and while he gets a lot of hype for his left side face off dot set up on the PP set up, he can score from just about anywhere. In the slot, with a deke or on the rush. He can also pass the puck really well and set up teammates, but doesn't get enough credit for that. For Craig that sounds a lot like Corey Perry who Anaheim took 28th overall in the 2003 draft - for some the best ever. Craig has Tyson ranked 15th, but who knows on draft day, he might slip and some team will get a gift fall in their lap they weren't expecting. FYI, the Ducks also picked up Getzlaf in the 03 draft. Perry by the way is a member of the Triple Gold Club - Olympics, World Championship and World Junior Championship.
As for the 2021 draft, we jumped ahead in time to chat about Swedish rearguard Simon Edvinsson who is one of many back end prospects in his draft class. He's big and skates really well which brings to mind Victor Hedman for Craig.

JJ Peterka could make it three German born players taken in the first round of the NHL Draft. Tim Stutzle could go second overall and Lukas Reichel who is ranked 33rd on the Craig's List. Peterka is 42 and if teams value a Rickard Rakell type player he might hear his name called on day one. He's a smart hard working player that could find his way onto some top lines in the NHL like the way Chris Kunitz and his 4 Stanley Cups did.
Charlie Desroches is at the very end of the Craig's list ranked 103, but don't mistake that for a lack of potential. In fact the more I learn about this player the more I think he's going to be a late round player that develops at the CHL and AHL level and turns into a valuable defender. These are the types of players who never stop working on their game and thus never stop developing their whole career and these are guys you win with.

It's hard to nail down exactly what Jamie Drysdale does best because the Erie defenceman does everything so well. He's one of the best skaters in the draft, he's dangerous with and without the puck and if you forget about him in the offensive zone you can expect to be fishing the puck out of your net. He has top pairing #1 dman potential, so that means he has to produce offensively and Craig explains how he will do that using a Hall of Fame former Dallas Star as a reference.

This week on Top Shelf Talent Craig and I discussed the top ranked defenceman on the Craig's List Jamie Drysdale. He's a player that's hard to describe what he does best because he does everything well. Craig has projected him as a #1 blue liner which is different than a Top 2 blue liner and we gave our opinions what separates them. Drysdale is a danger with and without the puck and Craig pulled out a Hall of Fame when describing him.
The Next Wave brought us a German forward who isn't flashy but can make those around him better. John Jason Peterka could make it 3 Germans taken in the first round and while his stats in the DEL this past year don't show a lot, his play does. A current Anaheim Duck came to mind for Craig when thinking about JJ. Charlie Desroches is a small defenceman who plays in Saint John and he's the type of player Craig would want in his system if he was drafting. Give him a few years and he could become a very valuable part of a blue line, maybe even better than scouts are thinking right now.
In Time Machine Craig made the comparison of Tyler Foerster a sniper with the Barrie Colts to a former London Knight drafted in the 2003 NHL Draft who once scored 50 in the NHL. We also went ahead in time to scout Simon Edvinsson, one of the many talented rearguards available in the 2021 draft. This youngster is a smooth skating Swede.
Also some Erie Otter trivia and news about Mason McTavish training in Switzerland, the WCJ without fans and NCAA letting players suit up in junior leagues.

Topi Niemela is a smaller blueliner who's very presence in the Liiga surprised and impressed many this year. He's a puck mover, but might not put up massive points in the NHL, however he also played a smaller defensive role this year.
Kasper Simontaival is also a smaller player, but the forward has dynamic skill and when he starts weaving up the ice you can't help but be excited. He's also a player who has worked on his overall game and was awarded with some PK time this past season.

It was so much fun to welcome in Jokke Nevalainen, the Head European Scout for Dobber Prospects to the show this week. Craig Button and Dean Millard had a chance to hear a different perspective on players. We focused on players from Finland for obvious reasons and started with Anton Lundell in Top Shelf Talent who is ranked 16th on the Craig's List. Is he the safe pick in this year's draft? Does he have more offence than what he has shown? In the Next Wave we started with the 46th ranked player on the Craig's List. Topi Niemela is small blueliner who surprised a lot of people by sticking in The Liiga. He's a puck distributor who had to play a more defensive role and both Craig and Jokke had interesting and different comparisons for him. Ranked 51st on the Craig's List is Kasper Simontaival has dynamic skills who worked on his all around game quite a bit this year and he could be a guy that leaves fans wondering how he slipped out of the first round, if a team doesn't step up and take him earlier. In Time Machine Craig took us back just a few years to compare Joni Jurmo a Finnish blue liner to his countryman drafted in 2012 Esa Lindell. Does Jokke see the same thing? We also went forward in time to examine Aatu Raty a little closer.

Lukas Cormier skates for the Charlottetown Islanders and skates well. He joins the play offensively and almost becomes like a 4th forward or a rover. He's not the biggest guy but either was Torey Krug who actually went undrafted and has scored double digit goals three times in his NHL career.
Meanwhile we skipped ahead in time to take a peak at former first overall WHL bantam pick Dylan Guenther. The Edmonton Oil King forward will challenge for the top player out the west and make his way into the top three overall conversation next year.

Drew Commesso had elite numbers in net for the USNDT against teams in the USHL and from the start of the season until things were shut down he continued to improve, not just his numbers but his fundamentals in the crease. He also has some options for his future as he's slated to attend Boston University where he will be afforded the time he needs to develop, and if he changes his mind the Quebec Remparts hold his QMJHL rights and can boast one of the greatest goalies of all time as their Head Coach and GM.
Alexander Pashin is a small speedy skilled forward who could go on to great things, if he makes better decisions. If the happens he could be a home run as he plays on the edge and his edge work and hands are dynamic.

Quinton Byfield is the 3rd ranked player on the list and Craig described how big or small the gap is between Byfield and Stutzle. He also cautioned strongly against judging Byfield foley on his World Junior Championship tournament as you will be 'making a big mistake'. Byfield has man size and is very strong, tough to handle when standing still and even tougher when he gets a head of steam going. We also paid tribute to another Top Shelf Talent from the early 80s as Dale Hawerchuk lost his battle with cancer this week, a more humble superstar might be hard to find.

Before Craig Button and Dean Millard dove into this week's Top Shelf Talent, they paid tribute to the Top Dog of the 1981 NHL Draft Dale Hawerchuk who passed away this week. A more humble super star there might not ever have been. As for the 2020 Top Shelf Talent, it's Quinton Byfield of the Sudbury Wolves who is ranked 3rd on the Craig's List. How big is the gap between Byfield and Stutzle according to Craig? Also what impact should one tournament have on a player and what are the first few strides like for the power centre? In the Next Wave it's a goalie from the U.S.A Hockey in Drew Commesso. He had elite numbers in the USHL and is ranked 75 on the Craig's List. He is heading to Boston University and is also a draft pick of the Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL where Patrick Roy does just about everything. Alexander Pashin is a RW who plays for UFA and while he lacks size at 5.07 and 154 pounds he plays with a bit of an edge and uses his edges on his blades really well. Ranked 47 on Craig's List, once his decision making matches up with his hands and feet he could be a home run for any team that takes him in the 2nd round. In Time Machine Craig went to an undrafted player currently with the Boston Bruins who has scored double digits from the blue line three times and compared him to Lukas Cormier of Charlottetown of the QMJHL while taking a peak at 2021 in the form of Edmonton Oil King forward and WHL Rookie of the Year, Dylan Guenther. Our trivia was about the Sudbury Wolves and player movement as well as why the QMJHL is starting their season so early was discussed in news and notes.

In Time Machine Craig is looking at a two time Stanley Cup champion who was a second round pick 9 years ago with a sharp shooting left winger from Finland. TSN's Director of Scouting sees some of Brandon Saad in Roby Jarventie when it comes to dependability and the ability to play with really skilled players. As for the 2021 look ahead we discussed defenceman Owen Power which produced a comparison to former Hart and Norris Trophy winner Chris Pronger. Power could challenge Aatu Raty for the top pick next year.

In The Next Wave we feature a defenceman from the USNDT who is off to Michigan and play for the Wolverines. Jacob Truscott uses his wheels to defend and his mobility comes in handy when starting the play out of his own end. He has the potential to make people wonder why he was drafted so low if he ends up in the 2nd round. Jack Finley is a big centreman who plays for the Spokane Chiefs. He is a tough guy to move from in front of the net and Craig says he has 'finishing hands' when in tight. Like most young guys going through a growth spurt things can be awkward, but Finley could be a force when he gets comfortable with his body structure.

Craig described Evan Vierling as a player similar to Christian Dvorak who might not have received as much attention as his former London Knights teammates Mitch Marner and Matthew Tkachuk but was ultra skilled in his OHL days. Vierling seemed to really improve after an early season trade from Flint to Barrie. We also looked into the future at the top dog for the 2021 draft Aatu Raty.

The Next Wave brings us players expected to be taken after the first round of the NHL Draft. TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button has Daniil Gushchin ranked 49 on the Craigs List and Connor McClennon 77. Gushchin reads plays really well and uses anticipation to create scoring chances. Conner McClennon has a terrific shot and Craig thinks he can score 50 in the WHL possibly next season.

Top Shelf Talent features players ranked in the top 40 on the Craig's List from TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button. Dawson Mercer is ranked 17th by Craig and was on his way to a terrific offensive season before Covid19 cancelled the CHL campaign. He played a role for Canada at the WJC and when he returned to Chicoutimi picked up the offensive pace he set pre tournament. He rose up the ranks as the season went on and was nominated as the 'Personality of the Year' in the QMJHL.

In The Next Wave on Tracking the Draft, former GM and current Director of Scouting for TSN, Craig Button and I discuss players who are projected to go after the first round, where great players, superstars and Hall of Fame players have been taken. Gunnarwolfe Fontaine, aside from having an all world name, has a lot of skill and Craig thinks if all 31 teams pass on him again, they'll be paying for it later on, literally when he's a coveted college free agent. The former member of the Chicago Steel of the USHL is off to Northeastern where Craig feels he will have plenty of time to develop even more skill. Carter Savoie had 53 goals in 54 games this year for Sherwood Park in the AJHL is bound for the mountains in Denver as he'll try and fill the net for the Pioneers. Craig thinks he's one of the best in the draft at doing that and admits he doesn't have him high enough on the Craig's List at 48. Craig Button is the Director of Scouting for TSN and joins Dean Millard each week for Tracking the Draft. Episode 2 features Yaroslav Askarov in Top Shelf Talent the best goalie since Carey Price according to Craig who has the goaltender ranked 7th on the Craig's List. The Southpaw has a sparkling international resume for the most part and like a lot of young players stumbled a little at the WJC, but it was what he did after that tournament, much like how a goalie reacts after giving up a goal, that impressed Craig the most. Gunnarwolfe Fontaine and Carter Savoieare in The Next Wave and both destined to play in the NCAA next season. Fontaine - who easily has the best first name in the draft and maybe all of sports??? - is off to Northeastern where Craig thinks he is going to develop so well that if he's not drafted will be a coveted free agent in years to come. He passed through the draft last year and Craig thinks that was a mistake by all 31 teams, so don't expect him to be a free agent after this season. Savoie is planning on being a Pioneer in Denver, another school with a reputation for developing good players and the Sherwood Park Crusader does the hardest thing in the game very well. He scores goals, in fact Craig called him one of the best scorers in the draft and admitted he doesn't have him high enough at 48. In Time Machine on Tracking the Draft, former GM and current Director of Scouting for TSN Craig Button tells a story regarding a past player and the NHL Draft while relating it to a player in this year's draft prospect pool. Craig took us back to the 1994 NHL Draft. There were some pretty big swings and misses in the first round (Edmonton Oilers I'm looking in your direction) but the Dallas Stars hit a home run in the 5th round taking goaltender Marty Turco. He won 275 games and twice led the league in GAA and save percentage while with the Stars. Turco's confidence had Craig thinking about Guelph Storm goaltender Nico Daws.

Jake Neighbours of the WHL's Edmonton Oil Kings is ranked 43 on Craig's List and does a lot things well and thinks the game well enough to play with guys above his talent level. What's holding him back and who Craig thinks of when watching him play are some of things we chatted about with Neighbours. Egor Sokolov is a big right shot left winger who plays for Cape Breton of the QMJHL and has terrific hands. He has been passed over in the draft once but that seems to have motivated him quite a big. He was hunting 50 goals this year when the season was cancelled and finished with 46 in 52 games while adding 46 helpers.

Craig Button is a former GM in the NHL, a Stanley Cup Champion and the Director of Scouting with TSN and joins me each week to discuss prospects for the NHL Draft. This week we explored Jake Sanderson a defenceman from the USNDT who is committed to play for the University of North Dakota. His father Geoff played over 1100 games in the NHL and put up 700 points and while Jake is a great skater like his dad, he's a different kind of skater. Craig Button has a lofty comparison for Jake if he produces offence at the NHL level. Jake Neighbours of the Edmonton Oil Kings is a player that is strong, smart and plays with a little bit of an edge. His ability to play well with skilled players gives him the opportunity to play high up in the line up. Egor Sokolov is a big Russian right handed left winger who plays for Cape Breton. He has terrific hands and was approaching 50 goals before the season was cancelled. He's also improved his game quite a bit after being passed over in the draft last year.
