"Be Rabbaniyun (learned men of religion who practice what they know and teach), because you are teaching the Book and studying it" [surah Ale Imran - ayah 79)
Nurtured and enlightened by the Prophetic teachings, the companions had a deep faith which soon shined from the East to the West. Their legacy and approach to understanding beliefs in light of the Quran and the prophetic sunnah was passed down and embraced by the next generations of early Muslims, such as the four imams.
It sometimes came under great threat and persecution, but the courage of scholars such as Imam Ahmad in the East and Imam Sahnun al-Maliki in the West ensured its preservation.
This early approach in understanding matters of aqeedah (creed) has become known as athari (narration-based) or hanbali (in reference to Imam Ahmad for his stance in the defense of the belief of the people of sunnah).
Regardless of their school of jurisprudence, great scholars continued to preserve and transmit this approach. They are such as Ibn Abil-izz al-Hanafi, Abu Umar al-Talamanki al-Maliki, Abu Uthman al-Sabuni al-Shafi’i, Abdul-Qadir al-Jilani al-Hanbali, and countless others.
In this unique podcast, shaykh Hassan al Kettani will lay out the origins, principles and main works students of aqeedah should study to emulate their predecessors.
There is a Quranic secret to becoming true scholar of the scared knowledge... Allah has given us the exact pathway to acquire knowledge and by His permission increase our Taqwa.
In surah Al Imran, Allah says, which can be translated as: "Be Rabbaniyyin because of what you have taught of the Scripture and because of what you have studied." (3:79) Al Rabbaniyyun are those who cultivate and teach people in the correct manner. More explanation of this term is found in sahih Al Bukhari, on the tongue Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him)... and here lies the true secret to becoming a true alim.
Ibn Abbas said, "Al Rabaaniyoon are those who teach the small knowledge before that which is advanced."
So, if you want to progress, start with "small books" which often contain the most important knowledge for Muslims, that which will take you to jannah if you sincerely apply it, or to hellfire if you ignore it. It is this methodology which our great imams have followed for centuries.
Each madhab has developed a set curriculum which takes the student from the beginner level to mastery and understanding of the evidence.
In this unique episode, shaykh Hassan al Kettani will lay out the different books students of Maliki fiqh should study to emulate their predecessors.
Hundreds of some of the most knowledgeable scholars travelled to the city of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and drank from the fountain of knowledge that was Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him).
His most senior students then spread his heritage to the four corners of the Ummah, from Egypt to Iraq, Africa and Andalusia.
In this episode, shaykh Hassan al kettani unveils how the madhab of Imam Malik grew and developed as well as the subtle differences in approach by the different groups of maliki scholars.
Shaykh Safar al Hawali is one of the most significant Islamic scholar and thinker of our age.
In this episode, shaykh Hassan al Kettani reviews his last book: Islam and Western civilisation.
This masterpiece of 3000 pages summarises the thinking of shaykh Safar al Hawali, and most importantly leaves precious and calm advice to the ulama, callers to Islam and the ruling family in Saudi Arabia.
He was arrested alongside his sons immediately after the publishing of his book.
The courageous stance of shaykh Safar for the truth led shaykh Hassan al Kettani to compare him to no other that Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him)
May Allah release him and all those detained unjustly.
