DJ Kalif

Techno DJ Kalif begun his musical journey in his hometown of Brasilia in 1997. He quickly started to make a name for himself, before moving to Dublin, Ireland. After a few months, he was discovered in a fairly empty open bar event, by Derek F, founder of the famous Fusion parties, who invited to play at a warehouse party on the same night. Kalif rapidly took-off from there, playing in Dublin’s main venues like The Kitchen, Switch, The Temple Bar Music Center, alongside the main DJs in the country and worldwide legends, such as Christian Smith, Umek, Claude Young, DJ Marky, Renato Cohen, Marco Bailey, and many more. Playing all over the country, he would often play memorable sets in France’s top clubs, such as at The Rex, in Paris.

In 2003, Kalif decided to move to Rio de Janeiro. Restricted to playing in a smaller techno scene, he continued his musical journey, with some trips back to Ireland, and also Holland. In 2008 he released his first independent album, Banzo. A more authorial work, not necessarily for the dance floor, going from more abstract and chilled ambient, up to more intense techno and breaks.

In 2009 he played a memorable last set in Clandestino Club in Rio. Disillusioned with the direction dance music had gone, generally speaking; the role of the DJ de becoming way too popularized, and tired of many aspects of the scene, he preferred to “retire” from the professional circuits.

Kalif has decided to get back playing the music he loves: techno. For pleasure...and not worried about algorithms and fame. As Chuck D puts it:”fame is fake, and it fades, and then you’re fucked”.
