We are in a war. A real war. The forces are good versus evil, light against dark.
Last week, we began exploring Jesus’s parable of the weeds in Matthew 13:24-30. (Check out the full text of the parable here.)
Before we join the battle, we have to be certain we’re on the right side. But once we’re certain we’re on the right side, what are we supposed to do?
Brad Pauquette answers this question as he dives deeper into Matthew 13 and leaves listeners with a challenge: It’s time to wake up.

Evangelists present the gospel differently in different cultural contexts. We see that in Paul’s ministry—he adapted his presentation of the gospel for Jewish, Roman, and Greek audiences.
Some people are especially aware of their guilt before God, so focusing on God’s atonement makes a lot of sense to them.
Some people are especially aware of supernatural influences in the world, so focusing on Jesus’s authority makes a lot of sense to them.
In the American church today, we see a lot of focus on something different but equally important.

There are a lot of interesting ways I hear people address God in prayer—Yeshua, Abba, Daddy God…but not so much the “Fear of Isaac.”
Except in Genesis 31, in which Jacob (Israel) refers to God as “the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac.”
We can find the words “Do not fear” hundreds of times in the Bible. It’s a resonant theme. But it’s not an absolute.

The year is 2008. Melissa and I are in Fontainebleau, Louisiana at the Abita Brewery after a tour.
You see, we had done something really inadvisable. We had decided to take Jesus at his word. When Jesus said, “Sell all your possessions and give to the poor,” and stuff like that, we thought we should give that a try.
We had vague, mostly unrealized ideas about doing ministry on the road, and we just went wherever. We slept in the car in Walmart parking lots or camped at cheap state campgrounds. We stayed with friends and family when it worked.
Throughout our lives, we’ve always heard people say that. I wish I could do that.
Can I tell you a secret? We’re not that special.
There are no actual qualifications for being crazy.
Most people don’t do the things the world calls crazy because they have a really good reason. We decline the life God is calling us into because we have an excuse. A big but.

The apostles didn’t start out to create a community. They devoted themselves to prayer, they waited on the Holy Spirit, and community happened.
A community based primarily on providing community is a fragile thing.
As soon as the community stops doing community like you wanted, as soon as you’re not feeling it, why not leave? Just like a burger restaurant that doesn’t have burgers, why wouldn’t you leave? It would be reasonable (wise even!) to leave.

I have a simple question for you today: Do you believe Jesus?
That may seem simplistic, but a lot of times we focus on a different question. We talk about believing in Jesus.
The thing is, we can believe in God and not know Him. We can have confidence in his existence and in His abilities without having any relationship with Him.
So, here’s a better question: Do you believe Jesus? When Jesus said stuff, do you actually agree with it?

The ancient scholars developed elaborate theories about what the Messiah would look like. They combed the scriptures for clues. They debated, divided, and argued with each other about how and when the Messiah would come.
Then Jesus came.

What does it mean when Acts 2:42 says that the first church “devoted themselves to the Apostles’ teaching”?
They weren’t studying a book, they were learning directly from people who had spent time with Jesus.
That’s still God’s design for the Church today. The way we do church can look a lot of different ways–in a house, in a big building, under a tent–but we learn from those who have spent more time with Jesus.
The same is true for writers. It is good to learn from others. You don’t have to figure it all out on your own.

In some circles it’s just a tent meeting that you plan in advance and invite a special speaker. In other circles, it represents a pining for the great historical revivals to happen again. Still in other circles, it’s a sort of undefinable grassroots momentum.
At its core, the word revival means to bring to life again. It comes from the Latin viva which means “to live.” With the prefix re- we could say it literally means “to live again.”
We want to know, when was the original vival? Is it possible to live from that place of revival all the time?

It’s not uncommon for us to receive this criticism on social media. “Why do we need any more books? I got THE book…the BIBLE. That’s all I need.”
It’s actually not the worst argument we’ve ever heard. The book is by far the most important book we have. So let’s consider it. Do we need other books than the Bible? Why?
If we’re commissioned to create great books to build up the Church and advance the gospel, then we had better be confident that it’s part of God’s intention for His Kingdom.

Sometimes we treat the things that we believe kind of like falling in love. It’s as if we just stumbled into the beliefs that we hold, and they are what they are.

What if I were to suggest that beliefs are just opinions that you decide to hold? What if I were to suggest that you’re in control of them?
