How do you write a book as a teacher? What do you need to do to become an author? A little more than ten years ago, I was asking myself these questions and desperately trying to find the answers. I felt pulled to put a children's book into the world, and then a book for teachers. If you are a teacher who has ever wanted more than just teaching in the traditional classroom to be a part of your legacy, you don't want to miss this episode. Learn how I got into writing books when I knew absolutely nothing about publishing and why putting a book into the world was important in my journey as an educator.

What do you think of when you hear "school leadership?" Being an effective school leader goes beyond test scores and the management of behavior and staff. Although those are important elements, how you impact those around you in your words and actions accounts for the most important parts of school leadership - and you don't have to be an administrator to have an impact. In this brief summer series episode, I share the leadership interaction that impacted my teaching career the most and how you can influence through leadership without leaving the classroom.

My first two years of teaching were rough. While I was a great student in college, navigating being a new teacher and a young adult with an anxiety disorder left me in turmoil and wondering if I was meant to be a teacher. I look back on this time in my life and wish I had someone I could have confided in who would have told me I could turn things around. If you are a new teacher wondering if things will get better personally and professionally, this episode is for you. Too often, we discount young adults who are just starting out instead of giving them the support, space, and guidance to become who they are meant to be. You can learn more about my experience with panic attacks and beginning my teaching career in this post and podcast episode.

When most teachers hear the word ‘observation,’ it doesn’t exactly bring a sense of excitement or growth. It brings pressure and performance, and for many teachers, the feeling of being judged rather than supported.
But what if observations could actually do what they were originally intended to do: help teachers grow, reflect, and feel more confident in their practice?
In this conversation, I’m joined by Craig Randall, who specializes in trust-based observation models that aim to shift evaluations from a ‘gotcha’ moment into something far more meaningful and human-centered. We’re talking about why traditional evaluation systems often miss the mark, how trust completely changes what happens in a classroom, and what teachers can do (even within imperfect systems) to make observations feel a little less performative and a lot more productive.
Craig Randall is the developer and author of Trust-Based Observations, an Amazon number-one bestseller in five countries. Craig has spent the last 30-plus years in education working as a counselor, coach, teacher, and principal.
Craig spends the majority of his time training school leaders in Trust-Based Observations (TBO), building mastery, and transforming the world of teacher observations to a model of trust and support that fosters growth mindsets, cultures of trust, and creates collective teacher efficacy in action.

Do you feel like you have too many tabs open right now as a teacher? Stressed out and overwhelmed from the noise, stuff accumulating in your classroom, and hearing your students say your name on repeat? How do you combat the sensory overload and avoid starting your summer break on the brink of burnout? In this episode, you'll learn why it's important to address overstimulation instead of powering through the insanity and ways you can manage the craziness, no matter what the end of the school year throws at you.

Have you ever felt unappreciated as a teacher or discouraged by the current classroom conditions and expectations? Teaching can often feel like a thankless job, and many are leaving the classroom because the hours and demands of teaching have led them to choose another path. This episode, recorded during Teacher Appreciation Week, looks at what matters more than appreciation, because change and appreciation, in the form we seek, may never come. If we want to continue doing well for our students and honor ourselves, the validation needs to come from within.

Do you feel like you don't have a voice as a teacher to share your perspective or initiate change? Ever wonder if speaking up will have consequences or will be pointless because you're "just a teacher?" If there is anything I have learned this school year, it is that having a voice is a choice. What matters is how you choose to use it. In this episode, I share my TEDx experience, my journey from unlikely teacher to having the platform I have today, and important aspects that separate professional, grounded voices of reason from those that just make noise. I am proud and honored to share my TEDxWVU talk with you at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kc7xHSF8gt0&list=PL7CCzOG03NMQOuqec_dJcXrLf7mgYIZq4

If you've ever felt like you just have to keep on checking things off your to-do list right through Spring Break, this episode is for you. Whether your spring break is an entire week or just a few days, teachers look forward to a break from the classroom routine... only to fill their schedules with more work while they are off. While doing things that you've wanted to get accomplished is good, the urge to always be productive has its downside. Listen to learn why using Spring Break to be reflective on your own needs is important before heading into the end of the school year, and why teachers have a hard time with the pressure to be productive, even when they are away from the classroom.

Taking time off as a teacher can feel as stressful as just sticking it out and teaching through the sniffles, but you can't live your life just during the summer. In this quick episode, I'll unpack why teachers struggle to allow themselves to be absent from the classroom and what to do to make the process of leaving your class in someone else's care for a day (or two) easier.

When students don't use classroom materials correctly (or with care), it becomes harder to teach. Getting your class to "play nice" with the supplies you have in your room (many that you have bought with your own money) can feel like a game you can't win before the holidays or in the lead up to Spring Break. What do you do when your students misuse or destroy the supplies in your classroom? Listen to this episode before you head back to the classroom - it may save you from having to pull a crayon out of a pencil sharpener!

When students back-talk the teacher or engage in other disrespectful behavior that disrupts the classroom, it can leave you feeling even more overwhelmed and exhausted, especially as student behavior issues increase right before Spring Break. What should you do when students do or say things that hurt your heart and throw the class off task? In this 50th episode, you'll learn why kids back-talk and act disrespectfully, a plan of action so you can keep control of your classroom while correcting the behavior, and a script for how to address the student behavior that allows you to keep your rapport with the child while also being firm and adhering to consequences. This episode will help you get through those tough times in the school year before breaks and at the end of the year when emotions run high and regulation runs low!

The winter months of teaching can leave us questioning our purpose and feeling exceptionally drained by classroom demands. It's easy as a teacher to let guilt creep in when the weight of expectations and overwhelm leads us to the brink of burnout. In this bonus episode, I share my interview with Elizabeth Peterson on her Enjoy Teaching Again Podcast about why teacher burnout isn't your fault - and what you can do to change the narrative. There's a lot going on in the world that is making our most vulnerable students fear for their safety. They see things on the news, on social media, or even down the street where they live (maybe even at their front door) that are scary and violent. It's a lot for an adult to process, much less a child. This is a short episode about what to keep at the forefront in your classroom during troubling times to help your students feel safe. Please know that what you do every day, beyond what you teach, to help your students grow and become the people they are meant to be, matters more than you will ever know.

It's no secret that artificial intelligence (AI) has changed how we can access information and perform tasks. While you may find the benefits and risks of using AI debatable, its ability to make the completion of work more efficient, for better or worse, is hard to deny. But what if you are a teacher who wants your students to learn how to write, and they use AI tools to complete their assignments instead of applying what you teach? Along with how social media has impacted communication, AI may feel like an impossible struggle when teaching your students to write and apply grammar skills. In this interview with national literacy consultant and author Patty McGee, we discuss how to teach students grammar in the availability of AI and strategies to make writing instruction relevant in the digital age. You can learn more about how to integrate grammar instruction in the content area and more of Patty's resources at www.pattymcgee.org

One of the greatest challenges of my teaching career and personal life has been learning to manage my panic attacks and anxiety. Teaching is an anxiety-inducing profession, and unchecked stress from the classroom can contribute to teacher burnout. In this season where teachers are continuously overworked and overwhelmed, taking care of your mental health is of the utmost importance. For this final episode of season four, I discuss my own journey with panic attacks and an anxiety disorder, along with how I have learned to manage as a classroom teacher for over 20 years.

Not everyone is going to be thrilled when you start setting boundaries as a teacher, even if your goal is to avoid burnout. Colleagues may feel hurt or disappointed that you don't take on the extra tasks you have in the past, or that you are prioritizing other things over the classroom. This upset can make you feel as if you are in the wrong or as if you need to go back to how things were when you were doing it all. Listen to this episode for the seven things to keep in mind when coworkers aren't happy about your decision to leave the teachaholic mindset behind. It's not easy, but I promise that if you stay the course, better days are ahead.

Scripted curricula and strict adherence to teaching standards can threaten to destroy your love for teaching. How can teachers combat the loss of teacher autonomy and freedom to be creative in their lesson planning when they're handed a scripted curriculum? Elizabeth Peterson of The Inspired Classroom shares in this interview how teachers can infuse their classrooms with joy, social-emotional learning, and creativity, even when they're expected to teach from a script. When you don't have kids of your own to go home to at the end of the day, it can be easy to take on more classroom and school responsibilities to fill the void. If you have ever felt less than or not enough because you aren't a parent, you'll want to listen to this episode. It's very personal to me and has been part of my journey out of teacher burnout.

Are you tired of hearing your students say "6 7," "sigma," or any other random phrases or noises that disrupt your classroom? This year, it seems the repetitive, disruptive noises from students are at an all-time high. Spurred by what's trending on social media, these seemingly harmless fads tend to distract our students from learning - and wear on our teacher patience. In this episode, we'll discuss why students keep saying and doing these trends (trust me - it's not the first or the last) and how we can combat their impact on student learning.

Nothing will cause teacher burnout faster than a classroom full of kids whose visions of candy bars and Halloween costumes dance in their heads. It can be a recipe for crazy, out-of-control student behavior when the holidays hit your classroom, but that doesn't mean it has to descend into sugar-infested chaos. Whether it's pumpkin season or your classroom is ready to jingle all the way, I'll discuss how to keep calm and maintain control so you can keep teaching and NOT lose your sanity before student behavior gets worse faster than you can eat a fun-sized Snickers.

If you have ever thought to yourself, "Should I quit teaching?" you want to listen to this episode on dealing with the expectations, overwhelm, and disillusionment that lead teachers down the path to burnout. While leaving the teaching profession may seem like the only answer to not staying up late grading, dealing with a broken system, and wrangling the student behavior choices that abound as the school year gets underway, changing how you think and manage your time can have a greater impact on your health and happiness than writing that resignation letter. The greatest changes in education will start with the teachers - because YOU are the greatest impact on the future of our students. And because of that, you deserve to make the changes that will put you on the path to happiness and success in the classroom and beyond.

It's hard enough to prevent teacher burnout and overwhelm with the "normal" daily events of the classroom, but teaching when you're experiencing a medical or personal crisis - that's an entirely different experience. Teaching when your life is falling apart, like a soft-shell taco, is enough to make anyone feel hopeless and incompetent. In this episode, you'll get five quick reminders about giving yourself grace, prioritizing what matters, and making decisions when your life is in turmoil - and you've got a classroom full of kids that need your time and attention.
Teaching when your personal life is upside down is something covered in the my free Teachaholic Action Guide. It goes along with my book Teachaholic: The 7-Day MindSET Shift to Conquer Burnout, Build Life-Changing Boundaries, and Reignite Your Love for Teaching.

Teachers are indeed affected by the insanity of this year and last, but we’re wired at this stage of our lives to respond and recover from it. A child who’s physically and psychologically growing and processing the unrest in this world right now - that’s a different story. Their ability to make sense of the trauma - the impact of distressing, dangerous events - requires a greater level of concern and care. In this episode, you will learn five ways to to create a trauma sensitive classroom environment starting today - even if the only contact you have with your class right now is thru a computer screen. Along with this I’m going to share some neuroscience to back up why these over arching practices will help with addressing trauma in the classroom. In the previous episode, I discussed the disillusionment stage of teaching, where many of you are finding yourselves right now - completely taken aback by how this year is unfolding. And I shared a strategy - the 5S strategy - for surviving disillusionment. In this episode we’re going to jump into how to strategize so you can set goals or boundaries for the new year - even if the future is uncertain and you’re not sure what teaching will look like when you return for the second semester. You can download a workbook to help you plan your goals and boundaries as you listen to this episode at this link.
Remember, you’re not just strategizing how you’ll get through this year; you’re developing a new way of thinking about dealing with life’s challenges. To recap how to strategize: Step 1: Break the Upcoming Year into Quarters. Step 2: S.E.T. Yourself up for Success. Step 3: Complete the Quadrants for Home/Health/School/Self. Step 4: Choose your focus by using the sentence stems, and Step 5: Review, Remind, Reflect. Whatever this new year and next semester of school brings, you deserve a life that brings you peace and purpose. After listening to this episode, you have the tools to create it.

The disillusionment phase of teaching is when reality sets in and the stress, fatigue, and expectations threaten to throw you off course. We cycle through it every year as teachers, especially in your first years of teaching. It usually hits right around the holiday season, when the newness of the school year is long gone, student attention is diverted to the excitement and festivities of the season, and nothing seems to be as you thought it would be back at the beginning of the school year. It’s a recipe for despair, especially with the added turmoil of a pandemic along with fewer hours of daylight going into the winter months. I fear that teacher’s mental well being is at higher risk than ever before with all the added uncertainty and stress brought on this school year. The amount of time you spend in the disillusionment phase depends on your ability to climb out to the other phases that await you: rejuvenation and reflection. Use the 5S Strategy to get to the other side: Simplify your tasks and teaching, Stop the behaviors that keep you from setting boundaries (you can hear more about boundaries in Episode 2 and Episode 3 on social media), Soften your self talk, Speak up about your feelings and solutions, and Strategize for what you need to do in order make the second half of the school year better. Use this experience being at “rock bottom” in a year that has turned everything upside down to develop routines and practices that work for you - so you can be the teacher and person you want to be.

We’re talking about social media and how it impacts your life and practice as a teacher. There is a lot to gain from the ideas and connections we form online through social media. The technologies, apps, and programs that we have at our fingertips today are making this season of life much more doable than had it occurred 10, 15 years ago. Social media is not only our place to connect, but where we go for ideas, curiosity, and boredom. It’s easy to fall down the rabbit hole of viewing glossy feeds, stylized photos, and catchy quotes. The longer you scroll, the harder it is to separate it from reality.
What you see in posts on Facebook and Instagram (or any other outlet you use, those are just the ones I’m familiar with) is not the whole picture of that person’s life, much less yours. Here are three things to remember when viewing social media, along with two acronyms to tell if your social media feed is making you S.I.C.K. or W.E.L.L.

Today’s topic, boundaries, is extremely important considering the mounting stress teachers are under as the school year resumes in the midst of a global pandemic. Whether you’re teaching face-to-face, remotely, or in a hybrid model, the demands are unlike anything I have experienced. The expectations and uncertainty of what the future holds for this school year have not only caused disruptions to work-life balance, but to the physical and mental health of teachers. Aside from health concerns, the technology transition that most schools are undergoing is a source of overwhelm in itself.
As I like to say, you are more than a teacher, and you deserve to set limits on how you spend your time outside of school. Setting boundaries will save your career before it starts. But no one can set those boundaries but yourself. How long to stay after school, when to stop responding to emails for the day, the amount of time to spend writing lessons, grading papers, or troubleshooting technology. That’s for you to decide. Here are five ways to get started with setting boundaries today.

This school year is starting unlike anything you could have anticipated. If you're a new teacher, perhaps you didn't even get to have your graduation to mark the milestone of completing your degree, or are still saddened by not getting to properly wrap up the year with last year's class. Months of isolation may be in stark contrast to the daily routines, favorite activities, and interaction with your family and peers. And now you're about to be a teacher, right in the throes of a pandemic.
When you step into the classroom on the first day of school, you also step into the lives of hundreds of people. The one commonality we are certain to share with our students and their families is the loss, grief, and change we have all experienced in some degree over the past few months. Regardless of how you'll be teaching, you’ll have group of students and the fabric of all they have endured since March meeting you on the first day of school. Here are some steps to work through the feelings of disappointment and other emotions you may be having prior to the start of this school year.
