Spring is almost here and that means that Summer is on its way, and while I'm beyond excited for my favorite season, I'll admit it can also stir up some old thoughts and feelings. You see, like many of us, I've been influenced by society's unrealistic standards of beauty and fitness.

Despite years of personal growth and self-love, those pesky thoughts sometimes sneak back in. Just the other day, I caught myself thinking, "Summer's coming – time to tighten up."

Ugh, I cringed even as the words formed in my mind. But it got me thinking – how can we shift this mindset?

That's where the Positively Me Challenge comes in. I’m inviting you to focus on the habits and positive practices that will actually help you feel happier and more confident, and not just running to the latest trick to help you lose those last 10 lbs.

Whether or not you are aware of it, you are putting out an energetic frequency every moment of every day. You put it out and it comes back to you, and those energetics play a huge role in your life, your relationships, your work….literally everything.

The cool thing is that once you become aware of it, you get to make CHOICES! That’s where the fun starts with playing around with intentionally choosing your vibe, experimenting with your frequency, collecting that data, and learning more about how much the frequency you live in effects your life.

Spring has (theoretically) sprung! Spring equinox was this past week which marks the start of the astrological New Year, and is a much better time to set new goals than the new years we celebrated back in January.

Symbolically spring is the time of new beginnings and perfect for planting seeds, both figuratively and literally. So let’s harness this energy, clear away the dead to make room for new growth, plant those seeds (create those goals) and prepare for the year ahead.

Today I am sharing about the idea of checking in with ourselves this year and honoring our capacity. Some years we have it all together. We’re doing all the things, volunteering all the places, and checking everything off everyone’s list (neighbors and teachers included). We might have other years where we just want to hide under a blanket, turn on the fire and wait for it to all be over, or a lot of years are somewhere in between.

This episode will help you determine what you want your holiday season to look and feel like, how to honor yourself, your feelings, and your boundaries. AND how to have a magical holiday season no matter what your current capacity is.

We are back with another Monday Mini-sode!

Today I am sharing an encounter I had this week that triggered some thoughts about my body and how I feel about it…..and how OTHERS feel about it. It’s a quick episode today, but something I felt like I needed to share.

View Details

February is the month of love. And this month I really wanted to shift the focus to LOVING OURSELVES. Self care, body love/acceptance, compassion. All the things that embrace loving ourselves and treating ourselves with care.

If you are part of the book club, you’ve probably noticed that this month’s picks are all kind of geared toward that idea.

To get a list of the book picks for February and to join the club you can go to www.jessielarson.com/bookclub

Okay, so the topic of today’s conversation is ways to love your body. And when you clicked on the title you might have been thinking: Hmmm……what?

I’ve got a radical idea, that you’re probably going to have some hesitation with, but I think you, me, all of us, we should all spend more time naked. That’s right sans clothes, in the nude, embrace the birthday suit….N.A.K.E.D naked.

GULP. Ok, deep breaths and don’t click out of this episode.

Now before you think I am running away to a secluded island and trying to recruit everyone to a nudist colony…..hear me out.

I want you to Think back to a time when you fell in love something or someone. Got it?

Okay, Now, think about how much TIME you spent with them/that. I’m guessing it was a lot.

Quality time/quantity time. As you spent time falling in love you learned things, noticed things, started to appreciate certain things…..and you can to all this, and fall more in love with that beautiful body of yours, by spending TIME with it.

Okay, so I first said time naked….but let’s put a pin in this for a minute and jump to some more beginner friendly ways to spend time with your body.

Ways to Spend TIME with Your Body and Fall More in Love:

1. Movement:movement is magical for appreciating and loving your body. Find ways to move that make you feel good. That help you appreciate you body. This is the opposite of working out to the point of exhaustion and trying to change every little thing about your body.

This type of movement helps you feel grateful for the VESSEL that allows you to experience life.

2. Pamper Yourself/Take care of you/ Make it feel good: As moms, sometimes our self care game comes dead last. Plan some time to more intentionally take care of yourself. Instead of just a quick shower, or dry shampoo….splurge on some really fun bath products. Take time to exfoliate instead of just the quickest shower ever.

Get creative with other ways to help your body feel good.

3. Dress it upHow much better do you feel when you take the time to get dressed?
Don’t ignore what you wear UNDER your clothes
Check out Episode 19- How Getting Into The Right Bra Size Can Change Your Life to listen to my favorite bra and boob expert and how the right one can make you feel like a million bucks.
Stop waiting for a special occasion. Every day is a special occasion. Wear things that make you feel good (even if you don’t run into anyone at Target)

4. Take it all offYou don’t have to spend the whole day in the nude, but maybe just take longer to get dressed when getting ready, and actually LOOK at yourself in the mirror while you get ready. Intentionally look at and embrace the parts of your body that you love. Try to stay away from nit-picking (note: this will be hard, but gets easier as you do it).

Give yourself a compliment ( or even just a wink and a smile) while you look at yourself.

Lingerie for you (not for your partner). Throw on some lingerie that isn’t just going to end up on the floor. Grab something that highlights a part of your body that you love and wear it for you!

The never ending tasks, the things you loathe doing, the piles of laundry and dirty dishes….these things have to get done, but you don’t have to hate them or the process any longer.

If you’ve been here for longer than 2.5 seconds you know how much I believe that you don’t have to be a victim to your circumstances and that includes even these little tiny ones.

Fact: the laundry has to get done, but your thought around it doesn’t have to suck. You have complete control in how crappy or how enjoyable this task gets to be.

Welcome to 2022! We are at the very beginning of a brand new year and I just love a fresh start and looking forward to all the good things that are just waiting to be created and experienced. It’s gonna be a good year and we are getting it started today with a bang with a knock out episode that I have been dying to get out to you.

I’m so excited to introduce you to Andrea Scher. She is the author of the book Wonder Seeker: 52 Ways to Wake Up Your Creativity and Find Your Joy and you seriously need to get your hands on this book, like NOW! I mean, first listen in to this episode, but then…..run and go get it. I read it in like 2 days and completely devoured every word and then immediately booked her to be on the show.

Listen on itunes

In this episode: About Andrea: a writer, artist and life coach whose work is driven by her belief in the transformative power of wonder for creativity and wellbeing. For nearly two decades, through her award-winning blog Superhero Journal, her international workshops, her Creative Superheroes podcast, and bestselling e-courses, she has thrilled others with their own power to find magic all around them.

What is a Wonder Seeker:

  1. Someone who actively looks for things that delight them.
  2. A person who is curious and inspired, vibrant and open-hearted.

How Wonder helps: calm our anxiety and keep us grounded and present.

Using Wonder as a mindfulness practice. Mindfulness and meditation can be intimidating, using moments of wonder can help you lean into mindfulness without feeling overwhelmed or intimidated.

What are Moments of Wonder: “where time is suspended and your heart opens and your breath catches and in the moment you are saying wow, you are feeling a connection, and it’s a beautiful moment.

Wonder Spotting: a version of a noticing practice. Actively choosing to look for a spot things of wonder.

Do kids experience wonder more easily than adults?

What are your first memories of wonder?

Learning and connecting to others by exploring what sparks wonder in them: each of us has things that intrigue us or cause us to wonder. For one it might be the vastness of the universe, for another it could be technology, for someone else it could be the amazing capacity of the human body….and so on. It can be so neat to connect to others by way of wonder.

Be a source of Wonder and not just a viewer of wonder: You can create magic and wonder in the everyday. You can create an intention to not only seek it out, but to create it and help others to experience everyday wonder and magic.

I told ya, this conversation was a pure delight and I just love how this podcast has enabled me to connect with some of the most amazing and beautiful humans. Below is a list of helpful links and other things we mentioned today.

Welcome back to the Positively You Podcast. Thank you so much for tuning in and making time for me today. So, are you done with your Christmas shopping? Haha, are you sick of that question yet?

I’m betting that in the past month or so that you have been asked that or a similar question.

Back in November is was “Have you started yet?”

Now it’s: “Are you done?” or Who else do you have to shop for?

Or What are you getting your kids for Christmas.

Sure, these might just be easy questions for some small talk, but man….its a lot of focus on buy, buy, buy, sales, discounts, shipping concerns, and stressing so much about presents.

This year I’ve decided to really lean in and go the route of swapping out more presents for creating more presence. In the past I’ve paired down, but this year….I’m going in strong.

Partly because I’m super over the commercialism of the holidays and also because I’ve really started to notice that my time, my actual physical presence is really what my kids want the most, (shocker) and not the latest gadget from some gift guide that a random influencer got paid to promote. (sorrynotsorry)

The point really got driven home to me recently. Last year for Christmas, I gave my kids a parent child journal that my friend Camille designed called Time for Us, and no joke….it has been the most used present. Annabelle writes in it almost every night and I love being able to go through it with her and Liam just asked for a new one for next year.

I’m telling you, time and connection is the asbsolute BEST gift you can give. And I think most of us know that, but we get caught up in a couple of hurdles or mind blocks.

Here’s some of mine that I’ve had to overcome and shift my thinking around.

Hurdle ONE:

I used to think if we went the route of “experiences”: instead of gifts, that it meant we needed to do a trip, and I mean a BIG trip, AND that it needed to be on Christmas day to make up for “normal christmas”
I kept putting off doing that because we couldn’t afford the 10,000 dollar Disney Cruise. And I was definitely stuck in a go big, all or nothing mindset. So I continued to fill stockings with stuff and buy more presents to spill out from under the tree.

Solution: Sure, it can be a trip. I mean thats definitely a goal I have on my vision board, but there are so many ways to gift experiences that our fun and in the future. When we gifted the kids Lagoon Passes we created a word scramble that they had to put together.

Gift Cards: Gift it to them with a specific date in mind for the activity so they have something to look forward to.

Science of Anticipation: Having something to look forward to, can actually make you happier! It fires up the feel good hormones in your brain. Joy of anticipation:
Actively imagining, and looking forward to, your best life can actually make you more optimistic, studies show. This mental image can make you just as happy as the experience itself, marriage and family therapist Kimberly Diggles told VICE. “We know anticipating something positive actually helps to maintain dopamine levels in your brain,” she said. “So just the very idea of anticipating something good can physically change your brain chemistry so you feel happy.”

Hurdle Two: The need to have a visually stimulating Christmas morning: (gag)
Christmas movies, social media, and even our own memories of running down the stairs Christmas morning to a room FULL of presents have given us this almost standard of what our Christmas presentation needs to look like. Confession: I bought MORE just so that it would look more aesthecially pleasing. Huge face palm.

Solution: Gotta shift that mindset.

Hurdle Three: Day of let down, once everything is unwrapped and they have “nothing to show for it”

Solution: Have a plan for the day. Gift something you can use or do the day of

Solution: Kids gift to each other- more intentional and thought out.

Solution: Get creative with how you gift it:

The gift I created this year for my kids:

things to consider when gifting experiences

We’ve all been there.. The post holiday itch to burn everything down. You want to tree gone, the decor gone, you need calm and minimalist vibes and you need them now. The post Christmas gift giving has you noticing all the excess, all the new (and old) toys, gadgets, and just stuff taking up space in your house. And before you know it, out come the trash bags, and donation bins, and the very real task of deciding what stays and what goes.

This itch to have a post holiday refresh or declutter is nothing new. And honestly the timing is perfect for it. It’s a new year and it feels good to let things go, to freshen up and clean the house, and just have things feel lighter.

But does anyone else find it just the slightest bit ironic that we all just spent a whole month (or more depending on when you got started shopping) bringing more and more and more into our homes. And now we feel the need to purge?!

In an effort to avoid (or at least lesson) the task of decluttering and filtering out what stays and what gets tossed or donated I’ve wanted to be much more intentional about how we approach gift giving at Christmas time.

And that’s where I’ve landed. TIME.

I think most of us would agree that time is our most valuable asset and probably the most valuable gift we could give. Over the years I’ve heard lots of families talk about gifting trips or experiences instead of presents and I’ve always thought that was a great idea……but not one that I could make work for my family. I had some limiting thoughts around it.

Like, if I was going to give up presents under the tree

Do you ever wish you could push rewind on your life and make a different choice? Yeah, me too. Unfortunately life doesn't work that way. We don't have a magic rewind button, but we do have the ability to push pause if we need it.

A theme for me this year has been learning to embrace uncertainty in life. To come to expect and accept that things will happen that are out of my control, but what I can control is how I respond and move forward from those situations. We all have the power to push pause, to reset ourselves, and to choose what we are taking from every single experience in life.

This time of year it seems like everyone is asking: What are your family traditions.

Does the last month of the year feel like it's just absolutely filled to the brim with STUFF?!? A cluttered house full of Christmas decor, a cluttered calendar filled with endless parties and events , a cluttered mind full of to do’s, gift lists, menus, party details, elf on the shelf ideas, and so much more!?
So many moms feel more overwhelm, frustration, stress, worry, resentment, and/or burnout than any other time of year…. the time of year that is supposed to be filled with JOY!

It’s time to Marie Kondo your holidays, find what sparks joy, and as for the rest…..just do as Elsa says and let it go….(too soon?)

A few years ago I made a New Years Resolution that changed my life. No really.

At the time I found myself feeling really frustrated with other people. I was feeling a lot of low vibe feelings toward my fellow humans. Judgement, annoyance, disgust, impatience……..and a whole heck of a lot of eye rolling. Like all the time.

And man I didn’t like that. I really didn’t like feeling so ‘ugh’ about all these people around me. Something needed to change.

I wanted to see people differently. I needed to view them through a different lens, a kinder and more compassionate lens because this low vibey way of feeling was not doing it for me.

So I decided to start looking at people differently. I began to view every single human being that I came in contact with, with eyes that were more compassionate. With more curiosity and a desire to understand them and to love them.

The vibration that I was in was very draining and I knew I needed new lenses. So every day I woke up and started my day with an intention of seeing people through eyes of compassion through eyes of kindness, curiosity and understanding. I really wanted to develop a more Godlike view of others.

This has shifted so much for me and has made a huge difference in my life. Listen in to this quick episode to hear more:

KARA SMITH IS A DEFENDER.

Kara grew up doing karate and learning self defense and for the past few years that message of self defense has been creeping back into her life. Watching her passion and purpose unfold has been so much fun for me and today’s conversation about being a DEFENDER is one you don’t want to miss.

In this episode:

*Self defense is more than just knowing how to defend your body. It includes all parts of you, including your mind.

*The parallels between defending our body and defending our minds.

*Your weapons of defense for your body are: Awareness and Voice
Your weapons of defense for your mind are: Awareness and Voice (the voice in your head and what you actually say out loud too).

*What are YOU defending? Your life is already reflecting what you care about.

*How to you become more aware and lean into life?

*You are learning and growing and every situation you are in is teaching you something.

*Parenting teenagers and creating tight family bonds. Coming at it as we are learning together instead of being the “authority” figure.

*The big secret to getting along with your teenagers: treating them like you really, really like them.

*The whole defender thing is choosing what you care about and then acting accordingly.

*If you have something brewing inside you, just take the step. The right people will come into your path to guide you and help make it happen.

Todays episode is inspired by a conversation that I had with one of YOU in my DM’s over on Instagram. This happens quite a lot actually, where episodes are inspired by messages, or posts I see on social media, or in real life face to face conversations. So, a few weeks ago I opened up my DM’s to find this question:

”Can I ask a question and not sound brash? Because I legitimately respect you. Why the “fun mom” title all the time? Can’t we just be moms creating fun/good memories? What about the dads making it all possible?”

Well this got me thinking. I didn’t have a good answer for her right away, but I told her that I was grateful for the really insightful question and that I wanted to dive into it with myself and think about it more.

Listen in to hear what I found out when I started getting curious and asking myself some deeper questions.

My conversation today with Jaime Morgan, a Gottman certified Life/Marriage and Relationship coach, was such an amazing chat. We talked about what having an ‘easy love’ means and how you can work to create an environment in your relationship that allows for love, friendship, kindness, and compassion to flow freely through the ebbs and flows of life and love. I promise you’ll walk away from today with some really awesome takeaways to take your relationship to the next level.

In this episode:

Let’s define What is an EASY LOVE actually is:A love that flows and smooth. It has a good ebb and flow. Knowing that no relationship is perfect, but feeling like everything flows.*

*Marriage takes work, but it doesn’t have to be awful, hard, complicated work.

*Being aware of our OWN actions

*Getting the right tools and habits in place.

*Friendship needs to be the foundation of your relationship.

*We weren’t taught in school how to be married or how to show, and share emotion.

If you’ve never been taught something, how can you be expected to know how to do it.

*Personal responsibility and working on yourself is KEY to working on your marriage.

*The only thing we have control over is ourselves. Trying to change someone else’s behavior is futile.

4 Key elements to an EASY LOVE

Friendship
Communication
Personal Responsibility
Conflict Resolution

I loved this interview with Leann. She is a beaming ray of sunshine and she just oozes positivity, despite being diagnosed with a lifelong illness at the age of 29.

Leann knows that perspective and positivity is a skill and she believes that ANYONE can learn it. She is full of fun and you’ll walk away with some really good insight after this interview. Listen here:

In this episode:

Getting diagnosed with MS at the age of 29 with 4 small kids. But my disease had felt not too hard. In 2017 I hit a relapse and had to adjust again and learn new ways to manage my chronic illness.

Using my diagnosis as fuel for my purpose to help others. To use my story and my trial for good instead of letting it beat me.

Perspective is EVERYTHING.

Being positive is a skill. I look at it like music. I was not born a gifted musician. But I take lessons, and I have for many years. I can learn and be stretched and be pushed to get better and better and to enjoy the process along the way. I believe that positivity is the same way. You can learn, and practice, and fail and try again.

What helps to build a skill of positivity.
- affirmations
-bringing the joy. We can’t expect joy to just be waiting for us. We have to bring the joy. It’s within our power to make our days more joyful.
- find the frosting.
-Practicing gratitude

There is light and hope and you can make a choice to shift your perspective.

REST IS BEST!

Having a supportive team around you.

Todays topic is ….drumroll….FOMO and ENVY. Wow. Kind of a heavy and fully loaded topic, don’t ya think. But these are feeling and emotions that we all encounter and deal with on occasion and if you’re like, Me? Never! I’m just gonna go ahead and and say LIAR!

So sometimes we work through these feelings in healthy ways and sometimes in… not so healthy ways. Today I want to talk about these emotions and how we can take personal responsibility for them, and for our thoughts surrounding these sometimes not so fun emotions.

You know that phrase that your parents would tell you growing up, that no one can MAKE you feel anything….it’s your choice. Yup. Turns out that your parents were right, and it totally is. And part of being a grown up is understanding when you are making the choice to feel something and what you wanna do about it.

A few weeks I found myself dealing with some FOMO. Fear of Missing Out. Super fun times. Thanks to social media, FOMO is a lot easier to come by. You can be scrolling your feed and stumble upon a party or event or whatever that it seems that everyone was invited to. Except you. This is what happened to me. But the funny thing about this particular time was that I actually WAS invited to the thing, I had some things come up that prevented me from being able to attend. Even still, as posts and pictures and stories began to pop up on my feed I began to feel these feelings of feeling left out start to rise up. Instead of burying them or trying to cope by eating my feelings or in some other un-healthy way, I decided to get curious. If there is one thing that I’ve learned this past year, it’s the power of curiosity, of asking questions, and diving deeper.

Okay, actually let me back up a bit before I get to the part about me being really present and aware and in a mentally healthy state. Because I’m human and a work in progress, I wanna share how this really went down. And what I think a lot of us do.

I started to self sabotage. And what I mean by that is that I deliberately went searching for more of the thing that was making me feel bad. Messed up. Yes I know. Instead of just continuing to scroll, or heaven forbid put my phone away and get up and do something else…. I began to investigate.

Oh, who’s tagged in this photo- let’s see what her stories are like……Oh shoot, I didn’t know she would be there. Dang I’m so bummed I missed that. Oh my heck, look how fun that all looks….. more clicks, more clicks, more clicks. Until I basically was at the thing because I was so engrossed with seeking it out, and making myself feel awful for not being there.

I’m fairly certain we all do some form of this to ourselves. We follow people online or deliberately seek out accounts that make us feel less than. Or we search home decor accounts and scroll forever gathering “inspo” only to then feel like crap about our own houses. Again the same thing with fitness accounts, or makeup gurus or cooking, or……..you name it. We SEEK it out intentionally and then wonder why we feel like crap.

So this is where I was. Spiraling. Luckily I did catch myself before it got too out of control. I had to be like, “WHOA girlfriend. What the hell are you doing?” I like to refer to this process as the “check yourself before you wreck yourself” method. It’s where you have to intervene before you really do some damage, you get into a healthier head space and started asking yourself some questions about the emotions you’re feeling.

Here’s some questions you can ask yourself if you ever find yourself in a
FOMO spiral.

  1. What am I feeling? Put a name to the feeling is it sadness? Anger? Resentment? Jealousy?I am feelings sad, left out, regretful, lonely…..
  2. Why am I feeling this? Then dive a little deeper. If it’s sadness….why? What about this is making me feel sad?
Because I miss being out with friends. This looks so fun and I need to feel that energy I get when I interact with other people.
  3. Am I feeling envious of the THING or what it represents?
  4. Can I do anything to make this happen for me?
Sure. I can figure out a way to get together with friends. I am just as capable of organizing a night out as this person was. I can be the one to invite others.

After you’ve got these questions answered you’ll be in a better headspace to be able to feel and understand your feelings. And I think that’s one of the most important parts. To FEEL your feelings and to not shame yourself for feeling them. Sure, people say that jealousy is this toxic trait or that it’s ugly or unattractive or whatever. The LAST thing you need to be feeling on top of the FOMO or envy is GUILT for being a human and having feelings.

So sister, feel those feelings. But ask those questions so you can understand them too.

The next step is taking responsibility. And this is where I had to practice some real self restraint. I knew I could keep searching it out. I could continue to look up a hashtag or follow tagged accounts- but why? What good was that doing. I had to own up and take responsibility for my actions. Sure the first post could have been something that just popped up on my feed, but what I do after that…..that’s on me.

What can you do to take personal responsibility around your FOMO and your envious emotions?

  1. GET OFF SOCIAL MEDIA! This might seem like a no- brainer. But sometimes harder said than done. Go plug in your phone, leave it in another room and go find something else to do.
  2. Edit Your Social Media. When you come back on your social media take notice of the accounts/people that you follow. If you find that there are certain ones that are constantly triggering FOMO for you- take a hard look at why you are following them and maybe take a break for a minute and see how you feel. Unfollow, put accounts on mute….whatever you need to do. I know that it might seem RUDE to unfollow a friend. But here’s the thing about when you are feeling envy whenever a certain account pops up.
Soon that envy will turn into resentment, or annoyance. You begin to resent that person. Or you start to resent your self for feeling envious and resentful of a friend. You start feeling crappy about yourself and you enter into a another spiral of self shame and that’s no fun for anyone.
  3. GET MOVING. Get up and go for a walk, change your scenery, get outside, turn on some music and dance your little heart out. It’s amazing what moving can do for your mood.
  4. Do something nice for someone else.
  5. Get Grateful. I put this one last on purpose. Sometimes when you are in the depths of throwing yourself a pity party the last thing you need to hear is what you have to be grateful for. Sometimes this is known as “toxic positivity”. Where you toss aside your “negative” feelings and try to override them with positivity. I say get grateful when you are in the right headspace to do it. Do it often. As it becomes a bigger practice in your life, naturally you’ll feel FOMO less and less.

Okay so, that was fun. Here’s your homework. I’ve never really given homework on this podcast before, but what the heck. This week if you haven’t already begin to establish a gratitude practice. If you need help with getting started you can listen to episode 12- How To Be More Grateful Everyday. You can also download my free guide to getting grateful by going to www.jessielarson.com/podcast/grateful and it’s linked there or by sending me a DM on instagram and I can send it right over to you.

Also take time to notice your emotions as you are scrolling on your social media or even in your daily interactions with people. How are you feeling? Do you need to edit things? Go ahead and make any edits that you need to in order to curate a more positive experience for yourself. You can also check out Episode 4 How To Be More Intentional On Instagram where I go into more detail about making social media a positive experience.

And last but not least, get curious about yourself and kick shame to the curb. Feel all the feelings and dive deep to understand them.

Today I am thrilled to bring you this amazing interview with my guests, a mother and daughter duo: Carey Conley and Laurel Wilson.

After losing two members of their family to suicide just three years apart – Carey's husband (Laurel's father) and Carey's son (Laurel's brother) – these two strong women chose not to just survive, but to thrive in the face of such adversity. Their mission is to help people of all ages identify their God-given purpose through Vision.

Carey and Laurel offer hope to others by helping them uncover their silver-lining perspective. When they're not at home in Oklahoma City or Scottsdale, you can find them on stages worldwide, teaching everyone – young and young at heart – that it's never too late to write down your vision and start living out your true purpose.

In this episode:

What is Your background and why is vision what you teach?

Carey: In my early motherhood I sat down with a mentor and I got clear about the details of my life. What I wanted it to look like. Where we lived, my relationship with my husband and with my kids. I thought about the career I wanted to have. I wrote a lot of different ideas. But I had a thought to teach vision and goal-setting. So I created a vision for myself and went to work creating my life around that. 8 years ago I started teaching Vision to other people.

Laurel: I grew up listening to my mom teach and talk about vision. It was one of those things where you didn’t want to admit. that your parents were right about something. So it took me a little longer to realize the importance of having a vision for your life.

I was 20 and in college when I lost my dad and went through my first big adversity. And it taught me how important it was for me to have a vision to help me to have perspective and stay hopeful and encouraged about the future.

Why Vision is Important- even (especially) after a year like 2020With the crazy year we had in 2020, a lot of people are a little hesitant to start this year with goals, resolutions, or vision boards.

“The vision becomes the piece that gives you hope”- Laurel Wilson

Goals vs. Vision

Think 3 years out. How old will you be. Will your kids be, what stage of life are you in. Imagine fully three years out- and then you can reverse engineer.

How do you create vision when you have no idea where to start.
When you’re in the “young mom/survival mode” season of life:

Laurel- I go back to thinking 3 years ahead and what I want to create that involved my kids. What I want to model, and how I can get my kids involved in the vision as well.

Carey: I could do a whole weekend for moms on this! The very first thing I would say is learn to time block. Have dedicated time that is “mom time” other time that is “business time” or “fitness time”.

Understanding that you CAN have structure in your home. Even if you don’t think you can. Knowing that you can carve out the time you need to go after your goals and dreams.

The third thing is GIVE UP THE GUILT! The guilt is useless! This is why having a vision is so important because it anchors you and helps you navigate through that guilt and understand the WHY behind the things you are doing.

Involving your kids in your vision:

Getting your kids involved in your goals and vision really helps to combat the mom guilt. Because they can help build the vision alongside you. You are modeling good things for your kids and starting them early on creating their own vision and goals. It can be incredibly bonding for families.

A vision is the anchor for all of the storms in your life.

How often should you reevaluate your vision?

Carey: I look at my vision every year on my birthday. But a lot of it doesn’t change. I look at my core values, and design my life around those values and what is important. It is good to refresh it, rewrite it, and add new details when you need to.

Laurel: The core piece of my vision has stayed the same, but over time the details have shifting and changed.

Should you write down your vision? Should it be easily accessible?

Carey: One of the things I love about having a clear vision is that it helps you make faster decisions. You either see somethings that lines up or it doesn’t.

Writing down your vision is non-negotiable. It’s the magic.

Most people keep their visions in their heads as a “someday”: Someday doesn’t happen. Someday means nothing to me. You’ve got to WRITE IT DOWN and then you’ve got to go one step further and put a date on it. It can’t stay up in your head. There’s too much other stuff going on up there. It’s gotta come out on paper.

Is there a lot of pushback when you tell people to put dates on goals?

Carey: YES! It’s scary to lay it out. People get emotional. You touch that place of “can I really do this, and what do I have to break out of to make this happen. Who do I need to become.”

Laurel: this younger generation is really tapping into more vulnerability and really wanting to create their dreams.

A really big vision helps you make the breakthroughs that have been keeping you locked up.

Carey: The HOW shows up later. You can’t wait for the blueprint or the details. You sometimes have to step forward with faith and things will start moving for you.

What are the things I need to start right now to get clear on my vision:

Laurel: Have a good perspective. Get into a clear headspace, especially after this year. Write out a WHAT IS list instead of a WHAT IF list. You need to let go of the what if’s and lean into what is and move forward from there. You have to let go in order to move on. Get to place to be able to write your vision from a hopeful point of view vs a negative view.
We’ve learned that we don’t have control over a lot of things. But if you need something to control: have it be your perspective.

Wow. These two have for sure lit a fire under me to get my vision out of my head, written down, and to put actual DATES on my goals. I’m guessing you are feeling the same.

Traditions are obviously a huge part of Christmas but sometimes they can be a point of stress and a feeling of obligation more than having that feeling of excitement. I have three areas I wanted to kind of break up today’s topic into:

  1. Evaluating Current Traditions

  2. Letting Go of Traditions
