In the world of homeschooling, the debate between individualized education and standardized testing often sparks passionate discussions. In today's podcast episode, I sat down with Regina from the Classic Learning Test to learn more about classical education, homeschooling, and what sets the CLT apart. Discover how the CLT aligns with a customized learning experience, why it’s essential to understand standardized tests even in a homeschool setting, and how preparing for the CLT can enhance critical thinking skills.

Science is more than just a collection of facts and theories; it's a dynamic story of discovery and innovation. And, ultimately, science leads us to worship our Creator in deeper ways. In my recent conversation with nuclear chemist (and homeschool science curriculum author) Dr. Jay Wile, we delve into why a chronological approach to teaching science can offer a richer, more integrated learning experience. By exploring the lives and contributions of key scientists through history, we not only understand scientific concepts better but also appreciate the development of human knowledge. Homeschooling parents seeking to inspire a love for science in their children will be encouraged and equipped by this episode.

Today’s guest podcaster is Katie Waalkes from Life in the Mundane. Katie is a second generation homeschooler married to her high school sweetheart for almost 15 years. Together they have 6 kids. She has been homeschooling for over a decade and has experience in homeschooling children who are neurotypical as well as kids with Autism, ADHD, Auditory Processing Disorder, Dyslexia, Hearing Impairments, & Other Medical Needs. Her own ADHD diagnosis has helped her understand her kids better & allows her to adapt and pivot as needed for her chaotic life.
Her passion is helping other homeschool families who don't fit in the box realize that God did not make a mistake when He put them in the families they are in. She loves to share about the flexibility and the individualized education that homeschooling provides and how you can live in that freedom instead of being burdened by the expectations of others. One of the family's mottos is "We strive for progress, not perfection" running the race that God marked out for us by being faithful in what He has called us to do and leaving the results to Him.

Y’all, I’ve got something super special for you this week. It’s the VERY FIRST EPISODE OF HOMESCHOOL CONVERSATIONS… only it’s never actually shown up in this podcast feed! Way back in February 2020, I did a video interview with my friend Matt Miner. I had so much fun chatting with Matt that I decided to make recording interviews a regular thing, and before you know it we got where we are today, with over 180 episodes and nearly 300K podcast downloads.
But while the video of my chat with Matt has been around for a while, the audio never actually got published here on Homeschool Conversations with Humility and Doxology! Thankfully, Matt recently sent me the audio file (including a bit of a bonus update since things are a wee bit different than they were in 2020), and now you get to listen in.
Now, remember, this is before I had a microphone and before I really knew what I was doing. So don’t judge too harshly, ok? But the conversation really was so good and the content continues to be relevant and helpful for homeschool families at any stage. I know you’re going to come away with lots of great tips as we discuss budgeting for homeschool families!
If you want to listen to more homeschool goodness from the Miner family, check out my interview with Charity Miner. That episode is called “Classical Conversations and Couch Schooling,” and the link is in the description.
Give this episode a listen, and while you’re here would you take a minute to leave a rating and review for the podcast in your app? Thanks so much! Happy homeschooling!

Nature Study is about more than merely observing God’s creation and learning about the natural world. Nature study in the Christian homeschool is rooted in natural theology. Homeschool nature study has become hugely popular in the homeschooling world especially in the Charlotte Mason, Wild and Free, Classical education, and other homeschool communities that prioritize wonder, outdoor experience, and hands-on learning. But for the Christian parent, nature study ought to be so much more. Nature study provides a way to nurture our family’s faith as we explore God’s created world.

Classical Education for Students with Special Needs: Classical Education has a reputation for targeting the brightest and most precocious students and providing far too rigorous a path for any but the child prodigy. But is that actually the case? Can classical education provide a path forward for students with special needs? Indeed, classical education contributes to intellectual growth regardless of a child’s starting point! Read on to discover the transformative power of this educational philosophy, especially when tailored for special needs students. We’ll discuss the universal adaptability of classical education, showcasing its ability to nurture intellectual growth, foster independence, and provide a holistic educational experience for children with unique learning requirements. Learning practical strategies for fostering independence in children with ADHD and dysgraphia further underscores the flexibility of classical education, making it a valuable choice for families navigating learning challenges. Grounded in the principles of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty, classical education emerges not only as an inclusive educational approach but as a beacon of hope and empowerment for families navigating the intricate terrain of special needs homeschooling.

Few books had such a profound impact in my childhood as the Anne of Green Gables series by L. M. Montgomery. Anne’s passionate curiosity and wonder-filled approach to the world around her, fierce loyalty, and delightful imagination continue to delight readers of all ages. So I was beyond excited for the opportunity to chat with author and publisher Katie Stewart. Katie is a fellow Anne-lover who recently published an annotated edition of Anne of Green Gables, bringing Anne to a new generation of readers. Whether you love Anne already or are new to the delights of Prince Edward Island, this is a conversation you won’t want to miss!

What do you get when you take one tired homeschool mom and one sorta-sick teen daughter and put them in a room together in front of a microphone? You get today's slightly-of-the-rails-but-still-totally-awesome Homeschool Conversations episode! My 16-year-old daughter, Emma, reprises her role as guest co-host as we kick off Season 8 of the podcast. (She has come on each season since Season 5, so if you like today's episode, be sure to scroll back in your podcast feed and catch up on all that awesomeness.)
Now, if you're new around here, I assure you that the regular tone of the podcast is a bit more polished. But today you get the raw, unedited, slightly kooky version of the Sloan family. So... consider yourself forewarned. (Some people actually say these Q&A episodes are their favorite... but I do just like to make sure people prepare themselves for the giggles!)
Make sure you're subscribed to Homeschool Conversations with Humility and Doxology so you don't miss a single episode! You can expect an encouraging interview every other week, with a few bonus episodes sprinkled throughout. In fact, our very first bonus episode comes Monday and it's going to be one all the Anne of Green Gables fans, especially, won't want to miss!!

I love how there has been an emphasis recently within education, especially in classical circles, on restful-learning. As I have pondered what “rest” means in my own life (not just in my home education), I return over and over again to the concept of resting from my own workings and attempts to earn God’s favor by being awesome.
My rest is found by relying on the accomplished work of Jesus Christ for my identity.
The hard news that I will never be “good enough” drives me to repentance and humility.
The blessedly amazing news of grace drives me to doxological shouts of joy.

Or maybe you already consider yourself a Christian classical educator, but you’re feeling burned out. The kids don’t seem to remember or appreciate the things you thought they would, and you wonder if it’s even worth it.
So, why do I pursue a Christian classical education in our homeschool?

Y’all have been hearing me talk about the brand new online community Made2Homeschool, and I am so excited to tell you that it is officially OPEN to the public! Over 20 creators have come together to create a one-of-a-kind space just for homeschool parents like you. 8 of my fellow contributors agreed to join me for little micro-episodes of the podcast… short conversations to get to know them and their homeschools. Each of them shares either a challenge of homeschooling or a favorite thing, and they all brought some GREAT practical tips you can implement to keep your homeschool running smoothly today.
In fact, the conversations were so great that some of them turned out to be, well, not quite so micro. So instead of trying to fit them all into 1 gigantic episode, I’ve split them into 2 parts. Today you can listen to part 1, and part 2 will publish on Monday.
Of course, if you just can’t wait, you can always sneak a peek at the content from part 2 by clicking this link which will take you to the complete transcript for part 1 and part 2: https://www.humilityanddoxology.com/made-for-this

Are you weary or worried, homeschool mama? Then this is the episode you need to hear today. Kristi Stephens is a Jesus-loving homeschool mom of 4. She shares encouragement for finding our identity in Christ, homeschooling in the midst of foster care and adoption, resting in the season to which God has called us, the joy of Morning Time, and more. Here's an excerpt from my Homeschool Conversation with Kristi Stephens: "It is hard and it is hard to manage all of these things simultaneously. Obviously, as a homeschooling family, we have a lot of plates that we’re spinning all the time as we’re trying to be with all of our kids individually and together and make sure our homes are somewhat not falling apart. When we added in me working part-time, that was another stretching point. Then when we went through foster care and adoption, it was very challenging. I would say one of the biggest things that grew me was learning to be disciplined with my time and advocate for our family.I’m a people pleaser by nature, and so I am usually very quick to just bend to whatever works for everybody else, whether it is for work, or our social workers, or whatever they needed. It was really stretching for me to have to advocate for our family and say– Again, that Morning Time piece was critical to say, “Our mornings are sacred and so I can’t do things in the mornings, so here is when I am available, here is when I can do things,” and really recognizing my limitations and being willing to verbalize those to other people. I would love to do that, but we just can’t...Foster care really pushed us to see our limitations of what types of things we could step into, what types of things we could manage. I had to really advocate with our county and our workers of when I could transport, and when I could go to meetings, and when I was available, and when I was not, and that other people wouldn’t treat our homeschool as something worthy of respect. I needed to treat it as this is untouchable time. Just like if I was at work and not reachable, this is how it is when we’re in the midst of especially morning time. That really became more and more critical to us to just protect that time.I think personally things that the Lord grew me in was where I was finding my identity, and I think we’ll talk about this probably more going forward. If I’m finding my identity in being homeschool mom of the year, I will find myself overextending and taking on things I can’t manage. If I’m finding my identity in being super foster parent who can do all the things, I will overextend and I will take things on that I cannot manage, and I will burn myself out. I will burn my family out. Whatever season that I’m in, if I take that as my primary identity instead of I’m a disciple of Christ, and these are the things he’s entrusted to me today. What will I do today with this time and be faithful in that, and recognize that my limits are gifts from him. I can’t say yes to everybody, and that’s kind of hard. I mean, it’s a hard lesson for people pleasers to not say yes to everybody."

It doesn’t sound scary. I just am already overwhelmed. I feel like I’m not even doing a good job just all the other mom and life and keeping the house running, stuff I’m supposed to be doing.” How is that mom supposed to now add home educating to her list of to-dos?Jamie: I think first and foremost, you can’t borrow trouble. I did that in my early years. I looked ahead to the years I’d be having to teach upper math skills. I wasn’t there yet in the same way that I can’t fear having baby number five when I’m only on baby number one.God will give you exactly what you need when you need it. I think sometimes that really is the struggle with moms. It’s not our overwhelming busyness, it’s we look at the busyness that we have right now and we add in all this other busyness that we think is going to come not realizing that your kids grow with you and so your busyness will change and will ebb and flow.I think also many moms who have started out in the public school and have transitioned to homeschooling will confess to actually being less busy. The busy that they do have in their lives of homeschooling is actually a busyness of their own choosing. What I mean by that, when you have kids in the public school, you think, “Oh, somebody else is teaching them and then they come home.” What happens when they come home is you’re doing homework with them for hours after school. This is homework at the end of the day when you are tired and you are spent, you have no more gas in the tank, you are having to tutor to someone else’s teaching style and ways of teaching like common core math. You are actually proactively teaching and not having to reactively retrain. You get to teach them regular old math or whatever it is you want to teach versus the way somebody else is wanting them to learn, and you get to have a long runway of learning right alongside them. You get to start out with the basic fact and add on to the next fact. You’re not just thrown into the deep end having to remember all of these things that it’s been years since you’ve learned.I think sometimes we can look at homeschooling and think, “I can’t do that, that will make me so much more busy than I already am now.” I would argue that it’s the opposite. It’s when you have your kids in school and you’re racing out the door to get them to school or to pick them up from after-school activities, bundling up all of your younger ones, waking them up from naps to go pick up your older ones, whatever, all the chaos that happens when you have to live half of your life outside of your house, I think that’s a different kind of busy. It’s a busy of not your choosing."

Here an excerpt from my homeschooling chat with Tiffany:
"While I agree with the necessity of preparing our homes to house the "operations" if you will of educating our children, the most important thing we can prepare is our own hearts, in daily communion with the Lord through prayer and time in the scriptures. This enables us to face the challenges of parenting and teaching our children while bearing with them in their immaturity, and ours, while we are growing up into Christ.
With that perspective of truth, what that helps us to do is that when we are squeezed-- If we're putting scripture in, we're meditating on His word then when we're squeezed, it's the word that's going to come out. Now I'm not saying that we're going to do it perfectly and that's when we repent. In light of that, here are some other practical things. Pray not only for your children but with your children. Find simple ways to incorporate worship and devotion of some sort into your school day. Time together with Christ at the center is really transformational in our days. Even if it doesn't seem like it right at the beginning, even if the body language of children, they're sulky and they're grumpy, do it anyway. Do it anyway. Prepare as much as you can the day before. Gather all the necessary supplies for each day, your lesson planner or your books, and corral them into one spot, whether that's a basket of bookshelf, these fancy rolling carts that they have now, put everything together. It is a challenge to be-- You think you're ready to start and then you don't have this, and you don't have that. You're up and back and forth from wherever you're doing your lessons, and then you've lost your children's attention. I don't know about anybody else but that can be trying to herd cats after you've had your moment of going back and forth trying to find the things that you need. Also, remember your why. Why are we doing this? I have found that remembering why I'm doing this, has helped to serve as an anchor for when I felt like I couldn't do it anymore. That why then serves as the baseline for what we do each day, what we do each week, what we're giving our time to.Last thing, super practical, just write your lessons in pencil or erasable ink so that you can make changes. Cross things out, circle something you didn't get to today and move it to the next day or move it to next week, and carefully consider your season. You're talking about littles and having a lot of littles and those little years, they're physically taxing. We have to lean into the fact that not every opportunity is an opportunity for now. The right thing at the wrong time quickly turns into the wrong thing."

As Christian homeschool parents, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the constant onslaught of news and cultural issues our families and children face each day. How can we equip our children to engage with the culture in a way that rests in the Truth of Scripture and confidence in the character of God? How can we teach them to think through culture with calm discernment, not anxiety? Kelsey Reed is the news coach with God's WORLD News, and she joins us on this podcast bonus episode to share her vision for equipping parents for this vital role of discipleship.

Marty Machowski's new 4-week Advent Devotional, The Light Before Christmas, combines devotions on the theme of light and darkness with the story of eleven-year-old Mia and her grandmother as they prepare for Christmas. Grandma loves to share her faith, especially at Christmas time, and although she is blind, she can see the light of Jesus shining bright and helps Mia—and children of all ages—to do the same.
In this week's special bonus Advent episode, Pastor Machowski himself reads us chapter 1 of his new book! This is an episode to enjoy with your kids for sure. Click here to add this book to your family's shelf this Christmas season!
Every year, Mia loves to spend the month of December with Grandma getting ready for Christmas. This year, they read a special devotional, The Light Before Christmas, together. Machowski brings families into their devotional time, sharing the story of Christmas. Through a Bible study of light and darkness, readers will discover how the theme of light weaves its way through the Christmas story and God’s plan of salvation.
The Light Before Christmas contains thirteen devotionals—three for each of the four weeks of Advent and one more for Christmas. Each devotional includes a Scripture for the day, an object lesson, a question to discuss as a family, a song to sing together, and a prayer. True Rest for the Weary Homeschool Mom: Humility and Doxology in Identity (https://www.humilityanddoxology.com/humility-doxology-identity/)
Christian parents want their children to know the Bible, but often they don’t know where to start or have a plan? This is where Dianna and her husband found themselves when their children were young. Parents using Grapevine studies are given a method and a plan to teach their children the Bible. Dianna’s children are now grown and teaching their children using the Grapevine method.
Dianna Wiebe is the primary author for Grapevine Studies. She brings an energetic and creative approach to her studies enabling her students to learn through direct interaction with the Bible. She has written over thirty Bible studies that are being used around the world by families, churches, and missionaries. ⚠ In today’s episode we’re going to be talking about issues surrounding female health, particular pelvic floor dysfunction. If you usually listen to the podcast episode with little ones listening in, I just wanted to give a heads up that we will be discussing anatomy and having a frank conversation. This is probably one to listen to with earbuds. ⚠
It’s a bit of a cultural joke that moms can’t jump or laugh without a little bladder leakage. But it’s actually no laughing matter. Not only that, but the symptoms associated with a weak pelvic floor can be a lot more painful and embarrassing than just peeing when you laugh.
After my own experience with pelvic pain, incontinence, and pelvic prolapse, I became a bit passionate to talk more openly about this neglected topic. And when I started opening up about it, so many mamas started replying! “I’m not the only one?!” was a common reply. When I let folks know about this interview, I probably got more email replies and social media DMs with questions and comments than any other topic! That surprised me, but it probably shouldn’t have.
We may not be able to get to all those questions today, but I hope this conversation first of all just helps people know they aren’t alone. I had felt so embarrassed and ashamed like there was something wrong with my body alone, and it was a relief to realize how common (if hidden) these issues really are.
Second, I hope you can come away with some practical tips and solutions to begin your own process of healing. I also hope it encourages other moms to get help as needed. Our bodies are strong and powerful and have nurtured babies and (if you’re listening to this podcast) are now educating the next generation. It is worth it to take the time to protect our bodies, to help them heal, and to help them stay strong.
Finally, I hope having this conversation just right out in the open, in your earbuds, on the internet, starts to take just a little bit of the sting of the awkward out of this incredibly important conversation. The more we normalize these discussions, the easier it will be for moms to get the care we all need.
So. There’s my big long introduction and the WHY behind this episode. Be sure to listen to today's conversation with Dr. Meghan O’Hara, PT, DPT, COMT, PRPC!

Exploring Shakespeare with Children: https://humilityanddoxology.com/exploring-shakespeare-children/
Dachelle is a homeschooling mom of 3 who knows the struggle of getting kids excited to read a book, especially the classics.
This is why she created Literary Adventures for Kids, a full language arts curriculum for preschool to high school that inspires kids to read through rabbit trails and a little bit of magic dust. She uses her experiences as an educator in the traditional system to create courses that encourage critical thinking and are catalysts for big conversations.
Dachelle is also the owner of Hide The Chocolate, a blog about her adventures in homeschooling and parenting using a relaxed Charlotte Mason philosophy. You can often find her reading a good book (or even sometimes just an okay book) and enjoying a jar of Nutella — don’t judge. ;)

As homeschool moms we can often get into a "get it done and check the boxes" mode. We have so many responsibilities and pulls on our time, and it's way to easy to give up on beauty in our homeschools. Prioritizing all those extra beautiful things just feels too overwhelming. But is it important and valuable to prioritize these elements of beauty in our homeschool? Might, in fact, those elements of beauty (like nature study and fine arts) actually be one of the most important relational elements in our home education?
Today's guests answer with a resounding YES! Tricia Hodges is a returning guest to the podcast, and she is joined today by her friend (and colleague at Nature Study Homeschool) Shirley Vels. Both veteran mamas with homeschool graduates, Shirley and Tricia have an important long-term perspective to share with us today. Few things communicate "homeschool family" like stacks of read alouds, overflowing shelves, and library cards filled to bursting. Most of the homeschoolers I know love words, but sometimes we are at a loss how to teach our young children how to wisely approach the books and poetry they're reading. Ought we to set them free with stacks of books and nary a bit of formal literary instruction? Ought we to drill them with stacks of worksheets identifying literary forms? Or might there be a better option all together?
Today's guest, Megan Andrews from Center for Lit, not only is a lover of words herself, but she also loves to teach the joys of literature to young students. She and I discuss the big questions and ideas we should be communicating to our children as we explore the literary world together. She also gives some specific tips for teaching poetry to our young learners. Plus, you'll hear all about her new picture book, Hop, Skip, and a Rhyme: Literary Devices for Young Writers. Megan's ebullient conversation is an absolute delight, so don't miss today's episode!

Min Hwang's gracious, Christ-focused encouragement brings beauty and joy to my Instagram feed. Whether sharing her own artistic endeavors, Charlotte Mason homeschooling tips, or Biblical living encouragement, Min always has wise words to share. Thus, I'm delighted to bring our recent conversation to you! I pray it blesses you as much as it did me.
Here's an excerpt from our conversation: "I think it's that same concept where I am so thankful. We have nothing to worry about. We have nothing to be anxious for, nothing to fret about, because everything is completed. On the cross, Jesus finished it. I have no more check boxes I need to check off. He checked them all off for me and that liberates me, therefore, with joy to be able to now do what I see my Father doing. I feel like a lot of things that wear me down, a lot of activities and flurry of must dos or should dos that I tend to bog myself to out with are really not up to and should dos."

This was such a fun conversation for me! I see Elizabeth each week on the computer screen as Isaac and I sign in for his Clap for Classics! live class on Tuesday mornings. Her musical enthusiasm brings loads of joy to our homeschool day. And it's been fun to get to know her as grown-ups, too, through the joy of social media and Voxer.
That made it even more delightful to chat with her on Zoom all by myself, and I can't wait to share this conversation with you all! Hang around with Classical and/or Charlotte Mason educators, and you'll probably hear about the Liberal Arts pretty quickly. You'll likely even hear discussion about including the Fine Arts in our homeschools. But, what about the Common Arts? What does it look like to include the Common Arts in our education, and why are they important?
Today's guest Chris Hall has not only written the book on the subject, but he also is embodying the truths about which he wrote. I loved this conversation, and was even a little surprised (and delighted) by how often the conversation returned to themes like connection and community.
Regardless what style homeschooler you would label yourself, this is a conversation you will not want to miss! But, word of caution: you may end up being seriously challenged as well!

You may already know Melissa Cummings from her work coordinating the Paideia Northwest conference. Perhaps you've read her guest post over on HumilityandDoxology.com all about singing the Psalms with our little saints, or you've followed her journey learning the Psalms with her own little ones over on Instagram. But whether you know Melissa already or are meeting her for the first time today, you will love her winsome description of life as a second-generation homeschooling mom: raising her children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, repenting on repeat, and reading lots of good books together.

One of the best parts of homeschooling is the freedom and fun it brings! We don’t have to do things just because somebody tells us to or just because everybody else is doing it. Dachelle McVey reminds us that we have the privilege to choose what is best for our own unique families, encourage our children to take ownership of their education, and add a bit of enchantment and pixie dust along the way.

Take a deep breath and dive into this fabulous conversation with Gina Munsey, 2nd-generation homeschooler, 3rd-culture kid, and Bringer-of-the-Truth-Bombs! Friends, I can hardly believe we have come to the conclusion of this Homeschool Generations series already! I have been personally so encouraged and challenged by the stories and perspectives shared by all the amazing homeschooling mamas who have participated.
Have you missed one of the previous posts or audioblogs in the Homeschool Generations series?
Read Part 1 to hear my personal story and experience as a 2nd-generation homeschool mom of 5. Read Part 2 and be encouraged by the hard-won wisdom and long-term perspective from 6 veteran homeschool moms (some of whom began homeschooling when it was still new and viewed with suspicion). Read Part 3 to hear from other second-generation homeschool moms as they share stories from their own education and how they’re doing things differently (or similarly) with their own children today.
Today in Homeschool Generations: Part 4 we will share advice for the new homeschool parent just embarking on this adventure, and communicate some of our hopes for the homeschool generations of the future.

Introduction to Dante and The Divine Comedy with Kristen Rudd and Wesley Callihan (LIVE Webinar Replay)
Don't be Daunted by Dante! Beginners welcome as we discuss Dante and his Divine Comedy. 100 Days of Dante Starts September 1! Enjoy this webinar replay for a helpful introduction, then read along with #100daysofdante: http://100daysofdante.org/
One of the greatest literary works of the Medieval era (if not the greatest), Dante’s Comedy can be intimidating for beginners. The imagery is often bizarre and at times disturbing. The allusions and themes are often difficult for modern readers to grasp the first time through. Those few brave souls who attempt Inferno sometimes grow weary and don’t attempt to complete the full poem, thus abandoning themselves in a hellish unfinished story!
But do not “abandon all hope, ye who enter here!”
In this webinar we discuss:
Let this be the year you begin your journey with Dante. You don’t have to read alone.
Join Kristen Rudd and read the entire Comedy 1 canto at a time beginning September 1: https://www.facebook.com/groups/100daysofdante/

You may have taught your child the foundations of personal finance but they’re going to need to be familiar with bigger concepts such as debt, borrowing, mortgages and investing basics if they’re going to get ahead financially. It may sound advanced but kids are hungry to understand how the world around them works. By teaching your child these key financial concepts you’re giving them the head start in life they need.
When children understand how the financial system works and how to use it to their advantage they’re able to feel confident about money and the future.
Are you looking for an online financial literacy course for your homeschool? MoneyTime will teach your child all the things you wish you had been taught about money.
That’s why I’m so excited to share today’s interview with Neil Edmond, founder of MoneyTime, on this week’s Homeschool Conversations podcast episode! A big thank you to MoneyTime for sponsoring this episode and post.

Even your youngest child may be familiar with familiar passages like Psalm 23. But WonderFull: Ancient Psalms Ever New by Marty Machowki enables young readers, parents, and whole families explore the Psalms more deeply.
Our family already loved other Bible study resources by Marty Machowski, and when I saw his new book about the Psalms I was so thrilled! WonderFull is not only an engaging introduction to the themes and structure of the Psalter for beginners, but it enables readers of all ages to see connections within the Psalms themselves and to see how the Psalms individually and as a whole point to Jesus.
I am so thrilled Marty agreed to be a guest on the Homeschool Conversations podcast! We discuss why he began writing books for children, how the Psalms can help us learn to pray, encouragements for parents as we disciple our children, the power of the Gospel, and more. In our final regular episode of Homeschool Conversations Season 3, I’m joined by Adrienne Freas, another one of the lovely guest suggestions I received from Karen Glass. Adrienne has experience as a Classical Charlotte Mason homeschooling mom, and has also worked to implement these ideas in charter school programs. Our conversation touched on topics like the Trivium as curriculum and pedagogy, the role of picture study and nature study in developing contemplation, and the realities and challenges of homeschool motherhood. I hope this conversation is an especial encouragement to you all as you transition from the end of one homeschool year into planning for the next!

Have you wondered about including Latin in your homeschool? We've had both highs and lows in our own family's experience studying Latin, so when Karen Glass recommended I speak with Angela Reed, I was eager to hear her perspective. Regardless of your educational philosophy (and even regardless of your interest in Latin), I know you will be encouraged by our conversation. Angela made me smile the whole time!

The statistics are sobering. About one in four women and one in six men are or will be survivors of sexual abuse in their lifetime. 34% of perpetrators are family members. 58% are known to the child and family. Only 7% are strangers. Tragically, we know that this can and does occur in local churches and homeschool groups. How can we help our children protect their bodies from those who would seek to harm them? Justin and Lindsey Holcomb join us in this week’s Homeschool Conversations episode to discuss issues of child protection and body image, all in the context of who we are as image-bearers of God. Does this feel awkward to you, or are you unsure where to start or how to have these conversations with your kids? Justin and Lindsey share some great tips and encouragement with us in today’s chat!

Anne says, “we primarily learn languages so that we can relate better to, and serve and learn from, other people.” Watch out…this conversation might change your whole mindset when it comes to language learning at home!
Have you wanted to include a foreign language in your homeschool, but you’re just not sure how? Have you wondered why language learning is even important? Maybe you’ve been entranced by the idea of bilingual education, but that sounds way too complicated for your ordinary homeschooling family life. Well, today’s Homeschool Conversations guest, Anne Guarnera, has a great perspective to share! Anne combines professional expertise with her real-life experience as a bilingual homeschooling mom. My favorite part about this conversation, though, was Anne’s relationship-oriented purpose behind language study!

Jami Marstall is a Charlotte Mason homeschooling mom of 4, including 2 homeschool graduates! When I was exploring options for podcast guests, I reached out to previous guests Karen Glass and Cindy Rollins for their recommendations. When both of them mentioned Jami as someone I should talk to, I knew she would be a scintillating guest! Our conversations ranged from the joys and challenges of homeschooling to the nitty-gritty of homeschooling (and graduating) a high schooler using a Charlotte Mason approach. This was an absolutely delightful conversation. Jami is a real-life homeschool mom in the trenches right there beside us, but she also has the long-term wisdom that graduating 2 very different students brings. Many of my friends have found Classical Conversations to be a good option for their families. While CC has not fit with our family's personal or educational priorities, I know so many folks love CC, and several have asked me to include a Classical Conversations perspective on the podcast. Marc Hays is not only a curriculum developer for Classical Conversations, but he's also an old friend. In fact, I once lived with the Hays family for several months and helped care for their newly adopted infant triplets! So when I decided to bring on a guest from the CC world, I knew Marc would be a perfect fit. Our conversations touched on topics like Christian classical education, analogies (and why they matter), and the true purpose of skillful communication. Regardless of whether or not you're interested in Classical Conversations, I know you'll love this chat!

Do you feel the pressure to homeschool in just the right way or to provide a rigorous education no matter what? Do you sometimes find yourself turning your homeschool approach into a perfectionistic competition? Jennifer Pepito joins us today to encourage us to consider the whole child in our home. This is an encouraging conversation for homeschooling parents of all ages, and also includes a special section for parents of preschoolers and kindergartners.

A few years ago I won an Instagram giveaway that changed my daughter's life. Ok, so maybe that's a bit melodramatic. But that was how we were first introduced to Mr. D Math. My daughter is now such a huge fan that we've continued to purchase her online high school math courses from Mr. D Math! Emma has even been known to favorably compare Mr. D Math to Jane Austen, so you know it must be good.
What a delight to be able to chat with Mr. D himself on this week's Homeschool Conversations podcast episode! A big thank you to Mr. D Math for sponsoring this episode.

I've absolutely loved following Amber Johnston on Instagram. I enjoy seeing pictures of her family exploring the world through travel, reading, and just ordinary family living. I appreciate her reminders that this homeschool mom life we're living is a good gift. So it was such a delight to chat with her for this episode of Homeschool Conversations! We discussed topics like how she came to embrace a Charlotte Mason education; the value of cherishing a slow, gentle childhood; the concept of books as mirrors and windows; and the encouragement that you don't have to figure it all out at once. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

The purpose of education is not to fill our children’s heads with knowledge. Rather, we want them to grow in wisdom, in wonder, and in love of God and neighbor. And our most important job as Christian parents is to raise our children to be fellow worshippers. These are just a few of the topics Keren Chu and I discussed in this week’s Homeschool Conversation! Keren is a pastor’s wife and homeschool mama classically educating her young children in the Philippines. I have followed Keren online for a while, and I’m always encouraged by her. It's our first repeat guest on Homeschool Conversations, and I think you're going to quickly see why I invited my friend Dr. Kristin Moon back on the podcast! Kristin combines a passion for science with real-life experience as a homeschool mom in the trenches. She brings an attitude of wonder and delight to every discussion about science. Because of her years teaching science to homeschoolers, she has lots of great wisdom to share in this episode specifically about preparing for and succeeding in high school level science courses. Yes. You can homeschool high school science successfully!

Have you ever opened your mouth intending to say one thing, but then something else entirely comes out? Oops! That happened to me last fall while I was being interviewed for this episode which originally aired on the Joyfully Homeschooling Podcast! Misty Bailey asked me, "How do you find joy in your homeschool day?" I took a breath and opened my mouth to deliver the answer I had prepared ahead of time. But what I ended up saying instead was definitely more vulnerable than I had planned to share.
I shared a bit on Instagram about some of the things on my heart soon after we recorded that interview, actually. Here is an excerpt: "So if you're also not feeling super peppy these days, it's ok. Just because it's hard doesn't mean we are doing something wrong. It also doesn't mean we don't like homeschooling. I LOVE homeschooling, even though it is not currently a super happy time in my head. (Homeschooling can't make me happy because it's not my Savior.)"
Listening back to my chat with Misty was an encouragement and a reminder that my identity is in Christ, not my work as a homeschool mom. We discussed some of the changes I've noticed in the homeschool world as a 2nd-generation homeschooler, some of my struggles as a homeschool mom, one of my biggest homeschooling accomplishments, and of course that infamous "how do you find joy" question. You'll just have to listen to the episode (or read the full transcript at HumilityandDoxology.com) to find out what I said.

Accidental-Homeschooler-Turned-Classical-Educator Kristen Rudd joins us in this week's Homeschool Conversations episode. We're chatting about one of our favorite topics: BOOKS! Have you wondered what people mean by "The Great Books"? Have you wondered if the Great Books even matter? Or maybe you're convinced that they're important, but it seems way too overwhelming to know how to start reading and teaching them in your homeschool. Well, you definitely don't want to miss my conversation with Kristen! She suggests 3 questions you can ask about any book, encourages us to approach literature and learning with humility, and explains how loving our neighbor is at the core of her approach to studying Great Books. What an absolute delight and privilege to chat with Karen Glass in this episode of Homeschool Conversations! I so appreciate her emphasis on humility, wonder, joy, and patience in a classical, Charlotte Mason approach to education. You will not want to miss her analogy between feeding our children good food and nourishing them on good ideas, while waiting patiently for them to grow at their own pace. So much goodness in this interview!

Sometimes we homeschool mamas can be tempted to look to homeschooling for our identity and even as a source of pride. But when we view homeschooling as but one aspect of our role as mothers, when we see that it is an act of worship and service to God, and when we prioritize relationship with our children, we can truly experience joy in the homeschool journey. Y’all, this is a pretty special interview! I sat down with my beloved and my friend, my husband John Sloan, to discuss why family worship is important, what it looks like in our family, and how other families can get started with family devotions in their own homes. John is truly my favorite person. We’ve been married for 16 years, and in that time he has been so faithful to prioritize the regular worship of God in our home. I also love that he didn’t come into this episode with “7 steps for family worship success.” Nope. John over and over again reminded us that we are resting on the grace of God in this, as in all aspects of family life. Is it any wonder I love this man? Wondering how to start family worship in your home? This interview is for you!
We also address some of the common challenges we face when it comes to incorporating family worship in your daily life.

Our conversation ranged from homeschool realities to Charlotte Mason principles, mother culture to mother’s energy levels, theology to books to philosophy. With all the scintillating variety, when it came time to title this post I had no idea what to call it! I thought about calling it something like “and this is why I like Brandy Vencel so much and am glad she’s this week’s Homeschool Conversations guest,” but that didn’t seem like a very good blog post title. But, can we just consider that the unofficial subtitle? 😉 Seriously, you guys need to listen to this entire interview!

Pam Barnhill is not only the Big Sister of Morning Time for many homeschooling families, but she’s also an author, podcaster, and homeschool speaker. Over the past couple years she’s also become my true friend! I was so tickled to be able to chat with her on this week’s Homeschool Conversations episode. We chatted about making homeschooling work for our individual families (that’s where “us-schooling” comes in) and we also talked about practical tips for integrating a Morning Basket into our homeschool day.

Difficult circumstances bring new sets of challenges to even healthy marriages. We’re all facing a unique brand of hard times right now, but every marriage will experience periods of challenge and difficulty. But we don’t face these challenges alone. I’ve been thinking recently about the promise of Jesus:
“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
The truths of the Gospel bring hope and perspective to our most difficult circumstances.
I’m joined today by Donna Westcott, the mother of one of my dear friends, a lover of Jesus, and a licensed professional counselor. Today we discussed ways to strengthen our marriages during hard times.
Donna has a lot of wisdom to share in this interview, and you’ll really want to hear her practical encouragement, all founded on our hope in Christ.

Bonus Episode! This interview was originally recorded in April 2020, right at the beginning of our experience with "Sequestered Sundays." I wondered: could we experience worship, rest, and joy...even while we were all staying home? But the thing that most struck me during this conversation? How we could basically have had this same conversation any other month of the year, stay at home orders or not! These are wise and helpful words for any Sunday situation. I hope it is an encouragement to you as you worship the Lord each week.
Today I'm joined by a very special guest, Pastor Zachary Simmons. Not only is Zachary a wise and compassionate pastor who loves Jesus, but he's also my favorite brother (ok, so he's my only brother).
I asked him to come speak to us today all about the Lord's Day: Why is Sunday unique and what's the point of setting it apart? How do we avoid zoning out and just consuming content while many of us are worshiping at home via screen (he actually had some things to say here that convicted me about the way I worship in my local physical church, too)? How can we still set Sunday apart, even if we aren't able to leave the house for corporate worship? Is rest even possible when all our kids are little? What about singles, widows, or those who worship alone? What are God's promises to us? And how can we as church members support and encourage our church leaders at this time?

Missy’s new memoir, My Divine Comedy, details “a journey down to go up,” and we touched on many of these themes in our discussion.
Missy was born to educators, and academics were always very important to her and her family. Her experience had taught her that “identity is something that you create. You push hard, then you try harder. If you do your very, very best and you succeed, then you can really be somebody…it was all about striving to achieve.”

Over the past few years, two words have gradually come to summarize my philosophy as a wife, mom, friend, home educator, and individual: Humility and Doxology.
I believe the best education is the one that leads to a humble view of one’s self and a glorified view of the beauty of God. I believe that faithful consistency and wonder-filled exploration are not mutually exclusive. I believe that relationships are more important than checklists, and that beautiful words are more valuable to memorize than inventories of facts.
I am convinced that Gospel truth alone saves us from endlessly striving and the fear, worry, and anxiety of wondering if we (and our homeschools) are enough.
If you’re tired of desperately trying to do enough…
If you’re looking for joy and peace in your educational pursuits…
If you think classical education and delight-directed learning aren’t mutually exclusive…
If you believe memory work is valuable, but lists of facts seem boring…
If you want a true, good, and beautiful education, but don’t want to squeeze into a one-size-fits-all model or externally-imposed schedule…
…then join me on this journey.
Let us repent of our constant striving.
Let us relish the joy of learning.
Let us rest in the work of Christ on our behalf.
Join me as we delve into the profound, the silly, the intriguing, the challenging, and the practical. Here you’ll find ideas for educating your children, whether you do this at home or in a more traditional environment. Here you’ll find tidbits for personal growth and personal entertainment and fun, because Moms-Are-People-Too. And, of course, you will definitely find lists and lists of good books!
