Host Kevin Ferrara speaks his mind regarding the $858 billion dollar 2023 National Defense Authorization Act that once passed, would enable certain federal firefighters to file medical claims for various diagnosed medical illnesses to include several types of cancer. While on the surface this may seem like a win for federal firefighters, Kevin talks about how it limits those eligible to a select group while alienating others who are dealing with one or more of the listed medical illnesses or cancers.
Because of the limitation on who is eligible, Kevin encourages his audience members to contact their Congressional representatives and demand the 10-year time limit for firefighters to be diagnosed is removed.

In this episode, host Kevin Ferrara speaks with the founder and CEO of Safespill, a small Houston, Texas based company that has developed a new product that essentially eliminates the need to use Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) or High Expansion Foam (HEF) in hangars.
CEO Tristan Mackintosh introduces himself and his company and, over the course of the podcast, explains how his vision to eliminate the use of toxic firefighting foam in hangars came to fruition which resulted in the Safespill Flooring System being installed in hangars, in particular several throughout the DoD.

In this episode, host Kevin Ferrara starts off by recognizing the 100th Anniversary of NFPA's Fire Prevention Week and the importance of this years theme, "Fire Won't Wait. Plan Your Escape." Kevin talks about how having a plan that variates from time to time will enable those escaping from a fire to be better prepared for the unexpected.
As the podcast continues, Kevin talks about firefighter cancer and how Virginia Beach Fire Department Captain Matt "Chevy" Chiaverotti is currently engaged in a battle to overcome Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer (metastatic carcinoma), a rare and aggressive form of cancer that accounts for less than 2% of thyroid cancers.
Matt is the Captain of VBFD Engine 7, the busiest engine in the department, and is a Search Team Manager with FEMA Virginia Task Force 2, an organization Matt has been with for over 16-years.

In this episode, hose Kevin Ferrara speaks with Susan Wind who has been researching and speaking about Coal Ash that has polluted water sources around the country and is linked to cancer. IN fact, Susan's daughter developed cancer likely because of her exposure to polluted water that contained coal ash that was dumped within her community.
As Susan speaks about yet another pollutant that is plaguing our communities, she speaks of the lack of transparency, accountability, and enforcement regarding coal ash usage and disposal despite evidence that shows coal ash has been a known pollutant and carcinogen for years.
As the podcast wraps up, Susan speaks about the peaceful protest that will be held at the EPA Headquarters in Washington DC, 20 September 2022. More information on the event can be found by clicking the link below.

Kevin addresses legislation affecting Federal Firefighters (H.R. 2499), recently discussed during "mark-ups", and is now sitting in the House of Representatives awaiting further action.
Kevin discusses H.R. 7089, the Vet PFAS Act which calls to furnish hospital care and medical services to veterans and dependents who were stationed at military installations and exposed to PFAS, to provide for a presumption of service connection for certain veterans who were stationed at military installations at which the veterans were exposed to such substances, and for other purposes.
Mentioned is the upcoming Senate Confirmation Hearing for Bill LaPlante who if confirmed, will be the new Department of Defense (DoD) Undersecretary for Acquisition and Sustainment (A&S) which would make him responsible for issues pertaining to PFAS issues plaguing the DOD.
Kevin encourages audience members to contact their Senators and ask what their stance is on Mr. LaPlante as well as asking them some questions below in this description. The focus of these questions is to hold the DoD accountable for PFAS remediation efforts and reporting requirements, some of which the DoD has already missed deadlines of.
Questions to ask Senators:
- When will DoD release it's report on the 50 most contaminated sites?
- How will DoD improve communications and engagement with DoD communities?
- When will DoD alert veterans and service members they may have been drinking contaminated water for decades?
- How will Mr. LaPlante comply with the Executive Order to avoid products made with PFAS, products like firefighting foam and firefighter turnout gear?

In this episode, host, Kevin Ferrara clarifies what "Burn Pits" is defined as and how it is misleading to military firefighters.
The Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT) Act, recently passed by the U.S. House of Representatives, proposes to establish presumptive of 23 service connected medical conditions to include respiratory illnesses and cancers for eligible veterans who deployed to certain locations where "Burn Pits" were in operation. Kevin explains how these provisions will not affect military firefighters exposed to toxins from fire training "burn pits".
In addition to the legislative provisions, Kevin talks about the AFFF registry that will only apply to "eligible" individuals.

In this episode, host Kevin Ferrara talks about his recent presentation at the 4th Annual Firefighter Health and Wellness Conference in "exotic" Beavercreek, Ohio where firefighters from 14 states converged to obtain information and listen to industry experts talk about health and safety.
The focus of Kevin's presentation was on PFAS exposure to military and DoD firefighters and what the DoD is lacking with respect to minimizing unnecessary exposure and health care for those exposed.
Throughout this episode, Kevin gives audience members an insight as to the severity of PFAS exposure to military personnel, in particular firefighters and their families. Additionally, Kevin highlights how the DoD continues to refuse to publicly speak about PFAS contamination.

In this episode, AFSO21 Radio, The Weekend Wrap-up host Kevin Ferrara thanks his audience members for their support with recognizing his cousin Stephen Ferrara's recent passing.
As the episode continues, Kevin speaks about Hurricane IDA and how those along the Gulf Coast need to be prepared for what is being reported as a catastrophic storm.
Kevin talks about the political impact of Afghan refugees coming to America might have on emergency responders at military installations as well as in municipalities where the refugees are being temporarily housed and eventually relocated.
Kevin then talks about Emergency Response Capabilities and asks audience members if responding with just one person on an apparatus is effective.

In this episode, AFSO21 Radio, The Weekend Wrap-up host, Kevin Ferrara talks about how many believe the health and safety of firefighters are less important than profits made by chemical companies producing PFAS.
Before the podcast starts, Kevin recognizes his cousin, Stephen Ferrara who recently passed away. Stephen was a volunteer firefighter, former Deputy Chief, and emergency communications dispatcher. "Stevie" was someone who would always take time to help someone, so much, he was credited with saving the lives of a family trapped by fire as he was on his way to work. Without hesitation, Stephen entered the smoke-filled home, searching for, and finding the family, ultimately leading them to safety as emergency responders arrived on the scene.
Kevin continues his podcast by talking about how the Veterans Affairs is now accepting disability claims for veterans who were deployed to locations where particulates may have caused asthma, rhinitis, and sinusitis. The VA added these three presumptive conditions based on the airborne hazards veterans were exposed to during their assignment to certain regions.
Kevin then speaks about PFAS blood testing and how he recently received what he considers a very simple blood test kit that will test for many more PFAS analytes than what the DoD is currently testing for. Kevin also speaks about the importance of having one's blood tested for PFAS due to the significant health risks PFAS has on the human body.
As the episode wraps up, Kevin speaks about certain pieces of legislation that seem to have stalled in Congress that if passed, would begin to protect firefighters and even civilians near military installations. Unfortunately, certain members of Congress to include his own representative, Fred Keller (PA-12) voted no to H.R. 2467 The PFAS Action Act. Despite numerous requests for comment, Kevin has yet to receive a response from Representative Keller's office as to why he voted no and continues to support DuPont, a leading manufacturer of PFAS.

AFSO21 Radio, The Weekend Wrap-up host Kevin Ferrara gives his interpretation of the July 22, 2021, DoD Inspector General (IG) report that shows what the DoD has and has not done to protect DoD personnel including firefighters from PFAS contamination.
Kevin provides audience members a summary of the 82-page report, highlighting certain areas that the DoD IG determined to be in his opinion. failures and egregious lack of initiative and responsibility to adequately protect and inform DoD and civilians on or near DoD installations about PFAS contamination.
One area of interest is how the DoD stated they have no plans to track, trend, or analyze PFAS blood test results for firefighters despite there being a requirement to do so. The DoD's refusal has left DoD firefighters asking what their blood results mean and if they should be concerned. Meanwhile, DoD medical officials have not responded to those inquiries, thus leaving firefighters to feel neglected.

In this episode, The Weekend Wrap-up host, Kevin Ferrara speaks about the importance and really, the necessity of fire protection and emergency services performing crew inspection through commercial facilities within their jurisdiction.
Recent incidents have shown that had a thorough crew inspection, or building walk-through been performed, the outcome might have been prevented.
Supporting the topic, Kevin speaks about the recent Surfside, Florida apartment complex collapse, the Station Nightclub fire, and the Morris, Illinois abandoned paper mill fire where crews found the building was not what they thought, turning out to be a lithium battery storage facility.
Kevin also recaps a previous episode where he and his guests spoke about suicide awareness and prevention and how it is extremely important for everyone to feel comfortable speaking and listening to each other when feeling stressed.

In this episode, AFSO21 Radio, The Weekend Wrap-up host, Kevin Ferrara speaks one-on-one with Doctor Jamie DeWitt from the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University (ECU), North Carolina.
Dr. DeWitt shares her work on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and the impact it has on the human body, especially firefighters who use products containing PFAS in their everyday tasks.
Dr. Dewitt explains that even if the production of PFAS were to stop today, we would still be exposed due to the amount of PFAS that exists emphasizing that prevention is critical in reducing exposure. She further explains that some PFAS that was produced by manufacturers, data is not readily accessible.
Dr. DeWitt when asked about PFAS blood testing, she explains what she would do if her blood test results indicated high levels of PFAS. Rather than focusing on the "numbers", Dr. DeWitt explains she would focus on "risks" such as family history of thyroid, kidney cancer, or other diseases.

The Weekend Wrap-up host, Kevin Ferrara starts off this episode by summarizing the recent Remediation and Impact of PFAS Congressional hearing that occurred on March 24 not on the 25th as Kevin misstated in his podcast.
Kevin gives his opinion on what he heard during witness testimony and why he feels what the DoD said, or didn't say supports the concerns of veterans and military firefighters. Kevin continues his discussion by highlighting several comments made by Dr. Jamie Dewitt from East Carolina University and Erin Brockovich who both were able to opine their concerns regarding PFAS and how it has and continues to impact veterans, firefighters, and communities surrounding former and active military installations.
Kevin then briefly speaks about several issues affecting the fire service with the first about firefighter training and certification and how doing such, can result in a high dividend return for not only the emergency service organization but the community as well.
As the episode closes, Kevin speaks about firefighters intentionally placing firefighter turnout gear on their children for photos. Kevin speaks to this action as not only being dangerous but irresponsible considering the evidence regarding toxic chemicals used in the manufacturing of firefighter turnout gear. Kevin states that even washed turnout gear is dangerous because PFAS does not come off during launderings.

In this episode, Weekend Wrap-up host Kevin Ferrara sits down with representatives from the Berks County, Pennsylvania Fire Chaplains Network to discuss firefighter suicide awareness and prevention.
Berks County Fire Chaplains Network representatives, CJ Ferrara and Kindall Wann provide insight on how they became involved in the fire service and what they do as part of a team to prevent firefighter suicides.
Using statistics from the IAFF, the discussion focused on the increased number of firefighters having thoughts, plans, attempts of suicide as well as the number of occurrences that firefighters harmed themselves but did not commit suicide. In the United States, it's estimated using the IAFF survey stats, an alarming number of the 1-million career and volunteer firefighters had thoughts of suicide, approximately 89,000.
Guests spoke about how Covid has impacted how support is requested and or provided and how face-2-face interaction is critical.
As the podcast concludes, CJ and Kindall answer some funny, off-topic questions from Pod Decks asking "Would You Rather?"

In this episode, Weekend Wrap-up host, Kevin Ferrara speaks on the importance of Firefighter Suicide Awareness and Prevention.
Kevin provides some data on the number of firefighter suicides throughout the United States as well as telephone numbers for individuals to call and talk with trained professionals.
Kevin talks about AFFF and PFAS contamination at Goodfellow Air Force base in San Angelo, Texas where the contamination may be a contributor to the constant smell and poor taste of the area's drinking water.
In addition to those topics, Kevin shares with listeners audio from a recent structure fire where four firefighters were injured, two receiving serious burns. Their MAYDAY calls can be heard on the audio which is why Kevin continues to speak about the importance of every firefighter having a radio, at the very least, those operating inside a structure.

In this episode, AFSO21 Radio, The Weekend Wrap-up, host Kevin Ferrara speaks one-on-one with Sean Mitchel, Secretary/Treasurer of Nantucket Firefighters Local 2509.
Sean begins the interview discussing how he became a firefighter and what led him to where he is today in the fire service highlighting who his mentors were and continue to be.
Throughout the interview, Sean explains how he personally became involved in researching PFAS and why the topic is so important to him and his family. Sean states he personally feels manufacturers, unions, and even the NFPA have an obligation to ensure firefighters are protected from being needlessly exposed to Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
Both Sean and Kevin speak about how the NFPA must review current PPE standards and make critical changes in how firefighting turnout gear is certified. Sean highlights the need for more public comment during the NFPA standards review process. Both Sean and Kevin agree that turnout gear manufactured from this point on must be PFAS free.
Sean explains how some individuals battling PFAS, like Diane and Paul Cotter, two individuals host Kevin Ferrara has spoken with and continues to work with on a regular basis, have been repeatedly lambasted by manufacturers and some unions, essentially targeting Diane's stellar work regarding PFAS in turnout gear, claiming her findings are false. Fortunately, Diane and her colleagues have been able to provide factual evidence showing PFAS in firefighter turnout gear and how PFAS continues to contaminate ground and drinking water across the globe.
Both Sean and Kevin speak about how firefighter unions have a golden opportunity to become leaders regarding how they will take on the PFAS issue and represent firefighters, choosing to conduct themselves either in a passive or active manner.

In this episode, host Kevin Ferrara talks to listeners about firefighters at Edwards Air Force Base in California training with high expansion foam (HEF) during an exercise involving an aircraft hangar. The HEF foam contains hazardous chemicals similar to AFFF yet, firefighters were unnecessarily exposed to toxic foam who likely believed the material was safe thereby why they were lacking proper PPE.
Kevin provides his opinion about how leaders in the fire service seemingly enable exposures like that at Edwards Air Force Base and other military and civilian locations to occur without accountability. Kevin also speaks about previous incidents involving AFFF at active and former military installations where firefighting foam has contaminated local communities and to date, no clean-up has occurred.

In other news, host Kevin Ferrara talks about the hazards associated with artificial turf used in many high school sports fields. These fields have been found to contain PFAS due to the unrecyclable materials used in the products.
In the United Kingdom, Kevin learned there are increased concerns with PFAS in food packaging. Kevin learned that of the 20 samples tested, 95% tested positive for PFAS. This is of great concern for consumers who simply may not be aware of the products their food is stored in has the potential of contaminating their food.

Kevin then reaches out to listeners, encouraging them to contact their Congressional leaders and ask they move H.R 2195 and S. 1105 otherwise know as the PFAS Registry Act of 2019 forward so those who have been exposed to AFFF and or PFAS can begin to have information collected and shared on a routine basis.
Wrapping up this episode, Kevin talks about how PFAS being incinerated at low temperatures poses a risk of "acid rain" that can potentially contaminate drinking water sources.
