Shepard’ Fairey’s art lives in between average, everyday authority and messaging to construct a third narrative that ignites movements. In the mid-2000s, Shepard began to create works that added to the voice of opposition to the current Bush administration in the United States, but also works that uplifted the profile of a public figure he believed to hold and represent the values that would positively impact the nation.
Shepard’s “HOPE” poster would help pivot Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign for U.S. Presidency as a progressive, people-driven movement that could bring the United States into a new era of social change. Listen as the creator of OBEY streetwear brand talks about how skate and punk culture influenced his purpose as an artist and the rise of the HOPE poster. Most recently, Shepard collaborated with artist Sandra Chevrier for The LINE Hotel to commemorate the centennial of the 19th Amendment. The mural created by the two artists merges their respective styles into a bold collage to celebrate women empowerment.

Before a research question is even explored, hundreds of biases influence the development and scope of the question. Scientific findings are unfortunately tinged by normative social standards that limit the realm of possibility for exploration and discovery, often leaving out the perspectives and knowledge of marginalized groups. Feminist.AI is a community-based research group that aims to bring a “feminist posthumanist” lens to artificial intelligence design and research by intentionally including diverse voices and anti-patriarchal voices as inputs. Listen as Christine Meinders of Feminist.AI talks about the current state of AI development, how Feminist.AI weaves cultural inclusivity into their design, and how creating more culturally-relevant inputs can transform knowledge that society relies on today.

“In D.C., women get shit done. This scene wouldn’t exist without their contributions.” – Farrah Skeiky, D.C.-based concert photographer on Transformer Radio
Creativity doesn’t happen in a bubble. Oftentimes, social and economic barriers stand in the way for marginalized people looking to achieve their greatest creative goals. Our guests on Full Service Radio remind us that it takes a radically-inclusive social environment to fuel D.C.’s creative economy. For women, this often means tapping the talent of other women to carry out each other’s vision for the city and their artistic careers.
At Full Service Radio we celebrate creative communities built by women to support women, the faces leading the movement, and their artistic contributions to the District and beyond. Listen to these episodes of our weekly and special programming to hear more from D.C. women who thrive with the support of other women in the creative world and remind us that we’re stronger together.

In a modern world where culture and entertainment moves faster than the speed of light, the role of museums, with stagnant exhibitions and unyielding reverence for the past, has to be re-contextualized in order to keep them relevant for today’s audiences. AIGA, the national organization for professional designers, leads conversations about how society uses museums to find credible information in a oversaturated world, as well as how museums can reflect society’s biggest needs and investigations by cueing multidisciplinary references of today. Listen as Josh Goldblum, CEO of Blue Cadet and Richard Bentham of the National Museum of the American Indian discuss where museums have been, and what vehicles can push museum culture forward.
