Proverbs Chapter 2

1My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, 2listening closely to wisdom and directing your heart to understanding; 3furthermore, if you call out to insight and lift your voice to understanding, 4if you seek it like silver and search for it like hidden treasure, 5then you will understand the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God.

We begin our new season with the book of Proverbs. Although the book begins with a title ascribing the proverbs to Solomon, it is clear from later chapters that he was not the only author of the book. Pr 22:17 refers to the "sayings of the wise," and 24:23 mentions additional "sayings of the wise." The presence of an introduction in 22:17-21 further indicates that these sections stem from a circle of wise men, not from Solomon himself. Ch. 30 is attributed to Agur son of Jakeh and 31:1-9 to King Lemuel, neither of whom is mentioned elsewhere. Lemuel's sayings contain several Aramaic spellings that may point to a non-Israelite background.

If Solomon is granted a prominent role in the book, most of Proverbs would stem from the tenth century b.c. during the time of Israel's united kingdom. The peace and prosperity that characterized that era accord well with the development of reflective wisdom and the production of literary works.

The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

2For learning wisdom and discipline;

for understanding insightful sayings;

3for receiving prudent instruction

in righteousness, justice, and integrity;

4for teaching shrewdness to the inexperienced,

knowledge and discretion to a young man —

5let a wise person listen and increase learning,

and let a discerning person obtain guidance —

6for understanding a proverb or a parable,

the words of the wise, and their riddles.

7The fear of the Lord

is the beginning of knowledge;

fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Therefore I, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you to walk worthy of the calling you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. there is one body and one Spirit  — just as you were called to one hope at your calling —  one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.

Now grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.

For this reason, I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles —  assuming you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that he gave me for you. The mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have briefly written above. By reading this you are able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ. This was not made known to people in other generations as it is now revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: The Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and partners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I was made a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace that was given to me by the working of his power.

"But now in Christ Jesus, you who were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who made both groups one and tore down the dividing wall of hostility. In his flesh, he made of no effect the law consisting of commands and expressed in regulations, so that he might create in himself one new man from the two, resulting in peace. He did this so that he might reconcile both to God in one body through the cross by which he put the hostility to death. He came and proclaimed the good news of peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father."

In episode 8 and chapter 3 of Philippians Paul tells the church that everything he might consider excellent in his life is literally comparable to "crap" in comparison to knowing Jesus Christ and being found in Him. "But everything that was a gain to me, I have considered to be a loss because of Christ. More than that, I also consider everything to be a loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Because of him I have suffered the loss of all things and consider them as dung, so that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own from the law, but one that is through faith in Christ  — the righteousness from God based on faith." - - Paul

The letter of Paul to the Philippians, is the eleventh book of the New Testament, written by Paul the Apostle to the Christian congregation he had established in Philippi. It was penned while he was in prison, probably in Rome about 62 CE.  The apostle Paul did not write Philippians in response to a crisis, as he did with Galatians. Instead, he wrote to express his appreciation and Love for the Philippian believers. More than any other church, the believers in Philippi offered Paul material support for his ministry (2 Corinthians 8:11; Philippians 4:15–18). Paul’s affection for these people is clear throughout the letter as he encouraged them to live out their faith in joy and unity (1:3–5, 25–26; 4:1).

We conclude our Galatians series with Paul's final chapter to the Galatians. This final chapter starts with describing how Spirit-led Christians serve each other by restoring those caught in sin and bear each other's burdens. Only those who plant God's Spirit in this life, through faith in Christ, will harvest eternal life. Paul concludes the letter by writing in BIG LETTERS that circumcision does not matter, only being made a new creation by faith in Christ matters.

Welcome to Season 2 of Stories Of Truth between today and Advent we'll be reading through some very important letters written by the Apostle Paul to various Churches. Today begins our first reading as we make our way through Pauls letter to the Galatians.

There Is No Other Gospel

Chapter One of Galatians

Paul wrote to the churches in Galatia after having a hand in starting them on his first missionary journey to Asia Minor. Paul’s close relationship to these churches helps to explain the extremely strong tone he took with them from the very beginning of the letter.

In advance of the Jerusalem Council, Paul’s letter speaks wisdom and clarity into the first real controversy that plagued the church in its early years—the relationship between Christian Jews and Christian Gentiles. Paul’s aggressive tone shows just how important it was to him that the people embrace unity in Christ, no matter their racial distinctions. For him, this was no minor issue, as he went so far as to call the Galatians deserters of Christ, people turning from the truth toward a gospel contrary to the one they had received from Paul (Galatians 1:6–9).

Key Verse 6 - 9

"I am amazed that you are so quickly turning away from him who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel —  not that there is another gospel, but there are some who are troubling you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, a curse be on him! As we have said before, I now say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, a curse be on him!"

James Boice wrote that these verses, Romans 1:16-17, “are the most important in the letter and perhaps in all literature. They are the theme of this epistle and the essence of Christianity” (Romans [Baker], 1:103).

It's said that it was Martin Luther’s wrestling with and finally coming to understand verse 17 that transformed his life and led to the Protestant Reformation. So these verses have had an incalculable effect on world history and they will have a profound effect on your life personally if God opens your eyes to the truths in them.

The Righteous Will Live by Faith

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.

Jesus Christ is our Sovereign King. In todays reading we hear from The Apostle Paul as he writes tot he Philippian church.

Philippians Chapter Two

"....For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow  —

in heaven and on earth and under the earth and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

In Psalm 31 King David cries out to The Lord to Rescue him knowing full well that the entirety of his life is in the very hands of his God.

But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” 15 The course of my life is in your power; rescue me from the power of my enemies and from my persecutors. 16 Make your face shine on your servant; save me by your faithful love. 17 Lord, do not let me be disgraced when I call on you. Let the wicked be disgraced; let them be quiet in Sheol. 18 Let lying lips that arrogantly speak against the righteous in proud contempt be silenced.

We end the week with the beginning. God is the "sovereign Lord of all by an incontestable right as the creator . . . owner and possessor of heaven and earth." Sovereignty is an Attribute of God based upon the premise that God as the creator of heaven and earth has absolute right and full authority to do or allow whatever He desires.

On today's episode we continue our look at the Sovereignty of GOD by looking at Chapters 4 & 5 of the book of Revelation and Johns account of what he saw when he viewed with his own eyes the very throne room of GOD himself.

Revelation Chapters 4 & 5

"Immediately I was in the Spirit, and there was a throne in heaven and someone was seated on it. 3 The one seated[a] there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian stone. A rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald surrounded the throne."

Those first few  verses of chapter one obviously emphasize God’s sovereignty as the main reason behind our salvation and the rest of the chapter is Paul’s letter to the Ephesians written to explain some of the great themes and doctrines of Christianity.

A message from GOD himself to Isaiah. There is no one like him in all eternity.

Bible https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Isaiah+46%3A1%E2%80%9311++&version=CSB

"What it means for me to be God is that “I declare the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done.” Two statements:

I declare how things turn out long before they ever happen. I declare not just natural events but human events — doings, things that are not yet done.

Verse 10: “I declare from ancient times things not yet done.” I know what these doings will be long before they are done." John Piper https://www.desiringgod.org/messages/the-sovereignty-of-god-my-counsel-shall-stand-and-i-will-accomplish-all-my-purpose

Dr. R.C. Sproul has said, “There is no maverick molecule if God is sovereign.” If He cannot control the tiniest bits of the universe, then we cannot trust Him to keep His word.

Welcome to episode one of our Sovereign series. Each morning we'll be releasing a an episode to help remind us by using scripture that GOD is sovereign and and in complete control of all things. It would be an understatement to say that the year 2020 has be a challenge.

Before Paul wrote this letter to the Christians in Colossae, he had never been to their city (Colossians 2:1). This helps explain the personal greetings he included at the end of the letter, a practice he usually reserved for letters to churches he had not visited (for example, Romans). Paul sought to develop personal connections with the people he hoped to teach and serve, rather than just going around from city to city asserting his apostolic authority. The more personal tone at the close of this letter would have been especially significant in creating a connection with the Colossian believers, given the fact that part of Paul’s reason for writing involved calling out the heretical teachers who had infiltrated the Colossian church.

In AD 60–61, during his first imprisonment in Rome, Paul penned this letter to the Colossian church after he had received a report that they were struggling with a christological heresy. The report came from Epaphras, likely the leader of the church at Colossae and a convert of Paul’s from his more than two-year ministry in Ephesus. Epaphras had come to Rome in part to serve Paul during his imprisonment (Philemon 1:23) but also to confide in him regarding the dangerous teachings the Colossians were hearing. So Paul sent this letter, along with the letters to Philemon and to the Ephesians, with Tychicus, accompanied by Onesimus (Colossians 4:7; Philemon 1:10–12). Tychicus was a coworker of Paul who would have been able to help the Colossian believers understand and apply the apostle’s teachings in the letter.

Colossae was an ancient city of Phrygia in Asia Minor, and one of the most celebrated cities of southern Anatolia (modern Turkey). A significant city from the 5th century BC onwards, it had dwindled in importance by the time of Paul, but was notable for the existence of its local angel cult. It was part of the Roman – and then Byzantine – province of Phrygia Pacatiana, before being destroyed in 1192/3 and its population relocating to nearby Chonae (Chonai, modern day Honaz).

Chapter 3 of our series on the letter to the Colossian church from the Apostle Paul.

So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.  Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

The book of Psalms contains some of the most quoted and powerful verses in the entire Bible. It flows with words of praise, prayers, and heart-felt thoughts about life and God, taking us through journeys from the depths of despair to seasons of celebration and thankfulness.

Today we’re reading through Psalm 23.

This beautiful Psalm, written by David, reminds us that God is our constant caring shepherd and faithful guide. In Him, alone, we have hope, both in this life and through eternity. It’s considered to be the most well-known and popular Psalm of all.
