Reader: Bek HudsonPreacher: Jonathan SmithThe Jerusalem Council was the first big test of the early church’s beliefs. There were some Jewish Christians who believed that to be saved you also had to be circumcised and to follow the law of Moses. After much debate, the decision was reached that salvation only comes through faith in Jesus Christ and nothing else. This fundamental truth is one of the pillars that the Christian faith is built upon. Red Door is an Anglican Church in Melbourne, Australia.

Reader: Amy CaruanaPreacher: John HudsonToday John takes us through Ecclesiastes, chapter 3, where there is a time for everything. We sometimes stress about the time we are in because we are going through a difficult moment, but John teaches that these moments will pass. God has an eternal view of time and we only have a temporal view. God stepped out of eternity into our time so that we can step out of our time into eternity.Red Door is an Anglican Church in Melbourne, Australia. We exist to be a community of people helping people make allof life all about Jesus.

Reader: John HargravePreacher: Nathan HollandNathan Holland from Open Doors is our guest preacher today. Red Door Church partners with Open Doors by giving some of our income to them as one of the mission partners we support. Today Nathan is exploring what it’s like to live in an environment full of persecution and how Open Doors helps the church in these areas. Open Doors doesn’t actively try to stop the persecution - after all, Jesus said that the his disciples will be persecuted. Instead Open Doors works to help persecuted christians in a number of practical ways - trauma support, food, help to reestablish an incomeamong other things. Reader: Jonathan SmithPreacher: Josh HennessyToday Josh is looking at Paul’s letter to the church in Colossae. Paul reminds the people there that they have heard the gospel and its truth, and that it is bearing fruit, not just in their church but all over the world. He could just as well be writing that very same letter to us here at Red Door Church. The only reason why Red Door Church exists is to worship the Lord Jesus - he is all we truly have and all we’ll ever need.Red Door is an Anglican Church in Melbourne, Australia.

Reader: Esther HudsonPreacher: Josh HennessyRegularly we look at the Book Of Jonah and think it's about a prophet and his rebellion against God. This is partially true. It's a reflection on us all, where we also rebel against God. However, the real story of this book is God's sovereignty. Even though Jonah rebels, he still carries out God's will, and in this case, God's will is to save the very people that Jonah holds immense hatred to.The question for us is, who are we to say who God can save?Red Door is an Anglican Church in Melbourne, Australia. We exist to be a community of people helping people make allbecauof life all about Jesus.

Reader: Jake ElzoPreacher: Jonathan SmithThe final chapter in Part III of our series details a pretty wildconclusion to the first missionary journey. In Iconium, the city isdivided and a plot is formed to stone Paul and Barnabas. In Lystra,Paul is first mistaken for Hermes and nearly worshipped, thenstoned and left for dead in the street. In Derbe, they make manydisciples - and then, remarkably, turn around and go back throughevery city that tried to kill them, strengthening the churches andappointing elders. The key sentence comes in v22: it is necessary to go through manyhardships to enter the kingdom of God. This is not a footnote. It is thepastoral message Paul and Barnabas leave in every church theyplant. Suffering is not a sign that something has gone wrong - itʼs aprescription for every believer.Red Door is an Anglican Church in Melbourne, Australia.

Reader: John HargravePreacher: Jonathan SmithPaul stands in a synagogue - among people who know the story of Israel - and traces the entire arc of that story to its fulfilment in Jesus: promised, rejected, crucified, raised, vindicated. The response is mixed. Many beg to hear more, but the synagogue rulers contradict and insult. Paul and Barnabas respond directly: since you reject eternal life, we turn to the Gentiles. This is the fulfilment of Isaiah's vision of a light to the nations. The Gentiles rejoice, the disciples are filled with joy, and Paul and Barnabas are driven out of the region.Red Door is an Anglican Church in Melbourne, Australia. We exist to be a community of people helping people make allbecauof life all about Jesus.

Reader: Bek HudsonPreacher: Jonathan SmithThe first deliberate, organised mission in Acts is launched from the new community in Antioch - not in a strategic meeting, but as they worship and fast. Paul and Barnabas's first significant encounter on the island of Cyprus is a head-to-head with Elymas, a sorcerer who tries to prevent the proconsul from hearing the gospel. The encounter is not random, itʼs a sign: the mission will face spiritual opposition, but the Spirit of God will prevail.Red Door is an Anglican Church in Melbourne, Australia. We exist to be a community of people helping people make allbecauof life all about Jesus.

Herod Agrippa I is at the height of his authority - executing apostles, imprisoning Peter, enjoying the applause of crowds who honour him as a god. Reader: Jake ElzoPreacher: Tibor TumasToday Tibor heps to answer the question on how to cope with anxiety during a time of waiting. Though God is not the author of anxiety - it came as a result of our sin - God is sovereign over anxiety. Anxiety is nothing new - the Israelites, when fleeing Egypt, were consumed by anxiety when they feared the Egyptian army had them trapped, but Moses told the people to trust God and see how he would deal with their danger. The story of Exodus shows exactly how God overpowered Pharoah and his army, and overpowered the people's fear and anxiety. Some people think they lack faith if they cannot control their anxiety and require professional help. But God, in his grace, has provided us these very people with the professional skills to help us. Jesus himself tell us in Matthew 6:27 that we cannot adda moment to our lives by worrying, but if we first seek God's kingdom, he will take care of our needs, and Jesus, as the very author of life, is authorised to make these statements to us.Red Door is an Anglican Church in Melbourne, Australia. We exist to be a community of people helping people make allbecauof life all about Jesus.

Reader: Esther HudsonPreacher: Jonathan SmithIt's Resurrection Sunday - a day to celebrate what Jesus achieved on the cross. The big question we need to ask is this - if this story is true, then what does this mean for Jesus, and what does it mean for us? This story is true - there is more than enough historical evidence to prove this, and the dramatic change in the lives of his disciples align to this too. Followers of Jesus today are also his disciples, and the changes seen in people's lives as they come to him points to this truth still being relevent today.Red Door is an Anglican Church in Melbourne, Australia. We exist to be a community of people helping people make allbecauof life all about Jesus.

The sentence was appropriate and the price paid was enormous, but was the right criminal convicted? As we come to the Sunday of Advent, Jonathan will take us to Isaiah 40:1–8; 27–31. In this passage, God promises to come to his people and to reveal his glory — a hope that finds its first fulfilment in the coming of Jesus at Christmas. This passage reminds us that while human strength fades, God does not. His word stands forever, and he delights to renew those who wait for him. As we prepare to celebrate Christ’s birth, we’ll reflect on how this ancient promise still speaks comfort, strength, and hope to us today.

As christians, we should not have a fear of death because Jesus has conquered death and has promised us a better everlasting life after this one. However, we don't always live like this. We often cling onto this life out of fear of death, almost like we do not believe the truth promised by God. Reader: Esther HudsonPreacher: Tibor TumbasToday in Acts 10:34-48 we see Peter breaking through his prejudices because he realises that God's promises are for everyone - not just for the Jews. God shows no favouritism. We can be thankful for that. Tibor tells us of the conversion of Jeffrey Dahmer, a serial killer. If we are shocked to think that a person like Jeffrey Dahmer could become a Christian, then we under estimate the power of God. Conversely, if we wonder how could God accept and forgive such an evil person then we do not fully understand the grace of God. For the Jews of the first century, the acceptance of gentiles into the church is their equivalence of Jeffrey Dahmer, such was the disdain for the gentiles by the Jews. We need to consider how gracious is God because He has accepted us, and that is good news for us.Red Door is an Anglican Church in Melbourne, Australia. We exist to be a community of people helping people make allbecauof life all about Jesus.

We hear how God breaks down walls and calls his church to welcome all kinds of people into his kingdom. However, there is a warning for us in this message. God had to show Peter that his prejudices needed to be overcome, and yet, later in his ministry, Peter fell back upon his old prejudices. We may think we do not hold any prejudices, but we do. Prejudice is not tolerated by God, so we must continue to fall upon the mercy of God and repent of our own hidden prejudices.Red Door is an Anglican Church in Melbourne, Australia. We exist to be a community of people helping people make allof life all about Jesus.

Reader: John HargravePreacher: Jonathan SmithToday we are looking at Acts, chapter 9, verses 31 to 43, where there is peace in the church following Paul's conversion. As a result of the peace, the church is able to do what it is meant to do - proclaim the name of Jesus by living like Jesus. Peter does exactly this. He witnessed Jesus healing a crippled man and bringing a person back to life. Peter is faced with the very same situtions. Imitating Jesus, Peter heals Aeneas and has him walking, and he raises Tabitha from the dead BUT it is not Peter who is doing this. Peter clearly states it is Jesus who is performing these miracles. Peter is just the conduit. Peter was an ordinary man living doing extraordinary things in the power of the Holy Spirit - and that is the lesson for us. We too are ordinary people and we too can do extraordinary things in the power of the Holy Spirit, to bring glory to God. Reader: Bek HudsonPreacher: Jonathan SmithToday Pastor Jonathan is teaching on Philip's encounter with the Ethiopian eunuch and how he witnesses to this man and teaches him who Jesus is. Philip was just an ordinary person in the church - he wasn't an apostle or one of the leaders, but God used him to present the gospel to this Ehthiopian official. Was this coincidence that these two men met, or was it a divine appointment, orchestrated by God? Jonathan presents that it was a divine appointment. Anytime when we are challenged to present the gospel to someone, God has already started the process for the person to hear, so we need to adopt the attitude that something extraordinary will happen when we obey God and be both obedient and expectant. After all, the entire Book of Acts is about ordinary people doing extraordinary things by the power of the Holy Spirit, and these things did not stop in the first century.Red Door is an Anglican Church in Melbourne, Australia. We exist to be a community of people helping people make allof life all about Jesus.

The people followed the teaching of the apostles, fellowshipped together, broke bread and prayed. The early church did not have the New Testament like we do today, so the teaching focussed on the Old Testament and how the scriptures pointed to Jesus. Fellowship, in the context of the early church, is a word we don't fully understand. It is MUCH more than "hangin gout" together; instead it is sacrificially giving ourselves for others. The Breaking of Bread may have meant communion, or it may have meant sharing meals together - possibly it was both. Prayer was something the early church did multiple times per day - coming from a Jewish background these people were used to praying at fixed times of the day and spontaneously. We need to think of our prayer times as unstructured. We need to schedule prayer into our daily Christian life.Red Door is an Anglican Church in Melbourne, Australia. We exist to be a community of people helping people make allof life all about Jesus.

The Old Covenant has been replaced by a New Covenant, where the Holy Spirit is poured out upon all who find their lives in Jesus, no matter the circumstance. Because God sees Jesus when he looks at those who call Jesus "Lord", God will NEVER remove the Holy Spirit from us.This is new! Unlike the Old Covenant, God would give his Spirit to a few and only for a specific purpose, and once that purpose was done, he would remove his Spirit because the person was not holy and righteous. Reader: Daniel YongPreacher: Josh HennessyMusic: Josh Hennessy & Bek HudsonToday Josh is teaching from Psalm 36. It seems that this psalm is telling us that evil people will be punished and those who follow God are blessed, however Josh asks us to look deep into this psalm. Jesus told people that many who claim to follow him will be rejected because they are following a God of their own making and not truly following him. This is the crux of this psalm - if we are only following God for the things he brings to us and not truly following him with our heart and soul, then we are one of the people Jesus says "I never knew you. Depart from me, you lawbreakers" (Matt 7:23).However, if we are doing our best to make God the centre of our life then we can only marvel at the blessings of God in this psalm where his faithful love reaches to heaven (v5) and his righteousness is like the highest mountain (v6)Red Door is an Anglican Church in Melbourne, Australia. We exist to be a community of people helping people make allof life all about Jesus.

Reader: Gehan PereriaPreacher: Jonathan SmithMusic: Josh HenesseyToday Pastor Jonathan is teaching from Psalm 146, a psalm which starts with the command Hallelujah! Literally, this word means "All of you, praise the Lord", and with the exclamation point, it's a command. When we read this, we often take it one of two ways - with pride because we are praising God daily, or with dispair because we are not. Jonathan teaches us that we're looking at this wrong. In John's gospel (Jn 17:4), Jesus says that he'scompleted everything God has asked him to do. This statement is BEFORE his crucifixion and resurrection, so what is Jesus referrring to here? He is referring to the way that he has lived his life in constant praise of God, and so, as being members of the body of Christ, we can worship and praise God freely. Jesus is the leader, and we are just a part of the choir, where the sound of all voices together in praise is beautiful. Pastor Jonathan is teaching from Psalm 30, a psalm where David looks at how great things are when he's walking with God, but also how bad things are when he turns from God.The message from this psalm is that even though he was far from God at the time he wrote this, David turned back to God. The same applies to us. When things are going very good in our lives, it's then that we have a tendency to turn away from God, and then fall into sin,but God, in his mercy, disciplines us to bring us back into right relationship with him. Irrespective of the mess we have made of our lives, his overwhelming desire is to welcome us home with open arms. However, as per all of Jesus's parables, there is more to ths story than we normally think. This story is actually about TWO lost sons - the 'bad' son who squandered his father's wealth, and the 'good' one who stayed home. Preacher: Josh HennesseyMusic: Josh Hennessey & John HudsonToday we start a new mini-series on Paul's letter to the Galatians, led by Josh Hennessey and Tibor Timbos. Josh leads us through the first chapter of this letter, expressing what the true gospel is. This is important because even now, some odd 2,000 years after Jesus's death and resurrection, we have churches teaching a gospel different to the one Jesus and Paul taught - and that gospel message is simply that it is by Grace Alone, Faith Alone, In Christ Alone that we are saved.Red Door is an Anglican Church in Melbourne, Australia. We exist to be a community of people helping people make allof life all about Jesus.

The statements contained in the creed are all substantiated by scripture. This message looks at the final lines of The Creed:“... the resurrection of the body and the live everlasting.”Jonathan challenges us to truly believe in the resurrection of our physical bodies, which is contrary to the dominant Greek philosphies of the time; to try and help us understand what has happened to people who have died in this life but have not yet been resurrected; and finally, to look at what life everlasting is all about.Red Door is an Anglican Church in Melbourne, Australia. We exist to be a community of people helping people make allof life all about Jesus.

Our nature is to always think that we're lacking something, that our lives would be fulfilled if we had the "next great thing", whereas, the abundance world view shows us that God has provided abundantly for our needs. We just need to thank him for what he's provided to us.

Today Pastor Jonathan explains baptism. It is an outward symbol of what has already occurred inside. Baptism symbolises the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus and how that happens in us. We die by drowning in the water, then we're buried in the water, and finally, we are then raised to new life in Jesus as we come out of the water.

It’s fitting, then, that Jesus finishes his sermon by driving home some of its key themes. Using three metaphors, the Preacher reminds us of the fundamental different between external appearance and internal reality. He puts before us the stark choice between two ways to live: one that leads to flourishing, the other that leads to destruction. And he reminds us that doing the will of God (living righteously) is key to entering the Kingdom.

In today's message, Jesus teaches that we should not judge, but what we mostly miss from this teaching is that we need to exercise discernment. We can be very quick to judge, but do not like being judged ourselves. It is okay to show constructive criticism, but it is hypocritical when we do not allow others to apply that same constructive criticism to ourselves. When we present the gospel to people who have never heard it, we need to point out what sin is, but not present ourselves as "holier than thou" lest we be deemed judgemental and hypocritical. We need to be the first to recognise our sin, the first to allow our brothers and sisters to show us what we cannot see and the first to repent. Then we can help others accordingly.

Chad looks at Matthew 5:43-48, where Jesus tells us to love our enemies. This is something that we all struggle with. Our natural tendency is to what revenge on our enemies - but what we fail to see is that we too are the enemy! If we choose to love our enemy we can stop the hatred and cause real change to happen. We need to realise that while we were still enemies, God chose to be reconciled with us - and look at the change in ourselves and our hearts as a result. Jesus is calling us to choose reconcilation, just like our heavenly father chose to do.

In Matthew 5:38-42 Jesus about retaliation where he uses the "you heard it said, but I say" teaching style again. We need to be careful with this passage, because if we do not read it in the context of the whole Sermon On The Mount, it appears that Jesus is asking us NOT to resist evil. In reality, He is testing us to examine our hearts when we consider retaliating to insults and unfair behaviour.

Using hyperbole, He then says that if our right eye causes us to sin, we should gouge it out - in other words, if something tempts us to be lustful to another person we must radically remove that temptation from our life.

Pastor Jonathan's message is from Matt 5:21-26, where Jesus starts with many of the "you heard it said, but I say" statements. Behind each of these statements Jesus tells us what the Old Testament says, but then adds the context around what the biblical text actually means, and then how to put it into practical application in our lives. The verses today cover the "You've heard it said Do not murder ... but whoever is angry with his brother or sister will be subject to judgement". Anger can be very dangerous and today's message explores the implications for us if we do not control our anger the way it was intended to be used.

Pastor Jonathan's message is from Matt 5:17-20, where Jesus says that he has come to fulfil the law - and not a single letter of it will abolished. This flies in the face of what some churches teach, stating the old testament does not apply to us today. It absolutely does, and in verse 20 Jesus tells his listeners that unless their righteousness surpasses that of the religious elites then they won't get into heaven. Wait? What? Fortunately, because we have the righteousness of Jesus, we are saved.

This is so we correctly understand exactly what Jesus is saying in this famous sermon.

This short two week series looks into prayer - specifically, how Jesus wants us to pray. This week Pastor Jonathan looks at the last parts of the Lord's Prayer, specifically where we should pray for God's provision - for our needs, not our greeds; His protection - keeping us from temptation, trials and evil; and finally, His forgiveness. The main focus of this message is how much God has forgiven us and the cost involved. We struggle with forgiveness because it is costly - when someone hurts us, we want them to pay us back for the hurt. When we forgive, we release the cost - we won't be compensated, it is costly! It is not until we fully recognise the cost to God, the unfathomable cost to Him, that we we can truly appreciate why we should behave the same towards others who have hurt us.

We are not to pray to God like He's some ambivalent pantheon who we try to manipulate for our own purpose, but we are to come to Him as His children, recognising that we are in relationship with Him. In this regard we are to pray for His Glory, His Kingdom and His will on Earth as it is in Heaven. The remarkable thing is when we pray for his glory then his kingdom comes and his will is done; when we pray for his kingdom then he is glorified and his will is done; and finally, when we pray for his will, he is glorified and his kingdom comes!

Pastor Jonathan is teaching from 1 Thessalonians 5:14-18. Like a foreign language we desire to speak fluently, living full of faith, love, and hope - living the gospel - doesn't happen overnight. We learn as we go. And as with learning a foreign language, there are some key principles to follow - 1. Don't give up practicing (keep reading God's Word, keep praying) and learning; 2. Get support from and give support to others - we continue to learn from others and we can also teach them; 3. Be thankful in everything - suffering can have a dulling effect on us to God's goodness and grace. The antidote is to celebrate, pray, and give thanks consistently - good and bad times - knowing that God's favour doesn't waver irrespective of our circumstances.

At this point in time, the Thessalonian church were worried about their fellow believers who had died, thinking because they had died before the return of Jesus that they would not be raised. Paul tells them their understanding is wrong. He encourages the believers in Thessalonika that those who died in Christ will rise in Christ, and that they have hope - a hope that others do not have. Pastor Jonathan says that we too have the same hope, however, he also tells us that it is perfectly ok to grieve for people we've lost - the bible itself has many verses depicting grief - but we do not need to grieve like people without hope.

This is in direct conflict to God's command on how we are to live our lives. Paul's message to the Thessalonians is equally apt for us today in our culture. On the bright side, Paul encourages the Thessalonian church to keep loving each other. By living holy lives and loving each other, God's Holy Spirit will be shown to be present in the church.

"The story of the Bible is epic in scope! Bigger than most of us have come to terms with. And this Psalm is epic in scope as well. You have Israel praising God for his faithful love, but then you have all nations invited to join them in praise, and then even beyond that, you have creation itself - seas, rivers, mountains, and everything in them - praising God for his goodness and grace!" - Jonathan Smith

"Gandalf! I thought you were dead! But then I thought I was dead myself. Is everything sad going to come untrue? What's happened to the world?"

Jesus has been dead and buried for three days. The disciples are distraught and hopeless. Into this malaise, the Son of Man comes eating and drinking once more. Christ is risen, and he’s ready for dinner! The fact that Jesus continues to enjoy God’s gift of food post-resurrection proves the eternal significance of meals.

His humanity doesn’t morph into some ethereal existence. In the heretical Gnostic Gospels, written centuries after the resurrection, the risen Christ is a ghostly figure. But in the true Gospels, he can be touched. He can eat. And he does so publicly. The resurrection of Jesus is the promise and beginning of the renewal of all things..." - Tim Chester, “A Meal With Jesus”

Our story is the story of redemption through the sacrifice of a Lamb. Beginning with the Exodus from Egypt (Ex.12), and fulfilled in Jesus, our Passover Lamb (1 Cor. 5:7), Red Door participates in the story of redemption every week as we share Communion and remember the Body and Blood of Jesus.

Preacher: Jonathan Smith Series: Meals With Jesus Passage: Luke 22.7-20 Subscribe: apple.co/2Jht9Cs More: www.reddoorchurch.com.au/sermons -- All glory be to thee Almighty God,
our heavenly Father,
who of thy tender mercy
didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ
to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption;
who made there,
by his one oblation of himself once offered,
a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice,
oblation and satisfaction
for the sins of the whole world;
and did institute,
and in his holy gospel command us to continue,
a perpetual memory of that his precious death,
until his coming again. -- The story of the Red Door begins over 3000 years ago in the land of Egypt. The book of Exodus tells of the rescue of God's people from slavery, despite the opposition of the greatest superpower in the world, and the unbelief of God's people themselves.
--
The Israelites, were suffering in slavery at the hands of the Egyptians, but their cry for freedom was heard by the Lord, and he responded by sending Moses to demand that the slaves be set free.
--
However, the Egyptian Pharaoh refused to listen, so God sent plague after terrible plague, culminating in the tenth and most devastating: God’s angel of death was sent to kill every first-born in Egypt.
--
In his mercy, God graciously provided a way of salvation, telling the people to paint the blood of a spotless lamb on their doors as a sign to the angel to pass over their homes, and so spare them.
Faith in the blood of God's lamb was their salvation.
--
Thus, beginning with the blood-painted doors of the Passover (Ex. 12) and fulfilled in Jesus, our Passover Lamb (1 Cor. 5:7), the Red Door has long been a symbol of redemption, refuge, and hope.
--
In fact, going back to the cathedral architecture in the Middle Ages, the colour red, signifying the Blood of Christ, was painted on the doors of the church, marking the building as a sanctuary: a refuge and safety zone from physical or spiritual dangers.
--Being Red Door Church provides us with a regular reminder of God's love and mercy, and awakens us to our common status as one-time slaves who have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb. -- The Lord’s Supper is the world in miniature; it has cosmic significance. Within it we find clues to the meaning of all creation and all history, to the nature of God and the nature of man, to the mystery of the world, which is Christ... Though the table stands at the centre its effects stretch out tot he four corners of the earth. - Peter Leithart, “Blessed Are The Hungry” -- “In a busy culture with people desperate to succeed, we practice in the Meal resting on the finished work of Christ. In a fragmented culture that is radically individualistic, we practice in the Meal belonging to one another. In a dissatisfied culture of constant striving, we practice in the Meal receiving this world with joy as a gift from God. In a narcissistic culture of self-fulfilment, we practice in the Meal joyous self-denial and service. In a proud culture of self-promotion, we practice in the Meal humility and generosity. All these practices are habit-forming, and so seep into the rest of our lives. - Tim Chester, “A Meal With Jesus”

Under the Law, only the best kind of people are invited to eat together, but in the Kingdom, everyone is welcome. In fact, only the humble - those who know their great need for salvation - will accept God’s invitation to eat with him.

Preacher: Jonathan Smith Series: Meals With Jesus Passage: Luke 14.1-24 Subscribe: apple.co/2Jht9Cs More: www.reddoorchurch.com.au -- Central to the political stability of the Empire was the ethics of reciprocity, a gift-and-obligation system that tied every person, from the emperor in Rome tot he child in the most distant province, into an intricate web of social relations... Expectations of reciprocity were naturally extended to the table. - Joel E. Green, “The Gospel of Luke (NICNT)” -- Most Jewish authorities [in Jesus’ day] said that no one who was blind, crippled, or lame could enter the temple... Documents from Qumran show that the Essenes sect interpreted Leviticus 21 to mean that the poor, the blind, the crippled, and the lame wouldn’t participate in the messianic banquet. - Craig A. Evans, “Luke, New International Biblical Commentary” -- We are: • The spiritually poor - with nothing to offer for our salvation; • The spiritually crippled - made powerless by sin; • The spiritually blind - unable to see the truth; • The spiritually lame - unable to come to God on our own.

When Jesus says "your sins are forgiven", that's the statement that gets him killed. It's blasphemy forgive sins, because only God can do that. Unless Jesus really is God... In that case, for the person who knows the depths and darkness of their sin, these words are the most beautiful - the sweetest words we can ever hear: "Your sins are forgiven. Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.” -- Preacher: Jonathan Smith Series: Meals With Jesus Passage: Luke 7.36-50 Subscribe: apple.co/2Jht9Cs More: www.reddoorchurch.com.au -- This [sinful] woman treats Jesus with a shocking degree of intimacy… She lets down her hair to wipe tears from Jesus’ feet. In that culture, letting down your hair was something you did in the bedroom. ‘Letting her hair down in this setting would have been on a par with appearing topless in public’ (Joel E. Green, The Gospel of Luke). - Tim Chester, “A Meal With Jesus” -- Everything about this woman is wrong; she does not belong here and the actions she performs are inappropriate in any setting for someone like Jesus. - Joel E. Green, “The Gospel of Luke (NICNT)” -- Luke seems to pick stories involving tax collectors and prostitutes. They exemplify notorious sinners. It’s as if he’s testing us. Have we grasped God’s grace? How do we react when a promiscuous woman kisses the body of Jesus? Do we celebrate God’s grace, or are we scandalised? The grace of God turns out to be uncomfortable and embarrassing. - Tim Chester, “A Meal With Jesus”

"The Pharisees aren't upset with Jesus because he's eating and drinking at a party. If he really is the Messiah, inaugurating God's Kingdom, then they expect feasting and celebration. They don't have a problem with the party, they have a problem with the guests. Jesus is actively inviting the 'uninvited'. He's including just the kind of people who shouldn't be included."

For Jesus ‘feast’ was not just a ‘metaphor’ for the kingdom. As Jesus announced the feast of the kingdom, He also brought it into reality through His own feasting. Unlike many theologians, He did not come [simply] preaching an ideology, promoting ideas, or teaching moral maxims. He came teaching about the feast of the kingdom, and He came feasting in the kingdom. - Peter Leithart, “Blessed Are The Hungry” -- It would be difficult to overestimate the importance of the table fellowship for cultures of the Mediterranean basin in the first century... Mealtimes were far more than occasions for individuals to consume nourishment. Being welcomed at a table for the purpose of eating food with another person had become a ceremony richly symbolic of friendship, intimacy and unity. [So much so that] when persons were estranged, a meal invitation opened the way to reconciliation. - S. Scott Bartchy, “Table Fellowship” -- Robert Karris says: ‘In Luke’s Gospel Jesus got himself killed because of the way he ate’ (Eating Your Way Through Luke’s Gospel). When Jesus eats with Levi, the message is clear: Jesus has come for losers, people on the margins, people who’ve made a mess of their lives, people who are ordinary. Jesus has come for you. The only people left out are those who think they don’t need God: the self-righteous and the self-important. - ibid. -- Preacher: Jonathan Smith Series: Meals With Jesus Passage: Luke 5.27-39 Subscribe: apple.co/2Jht9Cs More: www.reddoorchurch.com.au

"The cross is laid on every Christian.
The first Christ-suffering which every man
must experience is the call to abandon the attachments of this world.
It is that dying of the old man which is the result of his encounter with Christ.
As we embark upon discipleship we surrender ourselves to Christ
in union with his death we give over our lives to death. Thus it begins; the cross is not the terrible end
to an otherwise god-fearing and happy life,
but it meets us at the beginning of our communion with Christ.
When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer

God has always worked through a ‘faithful remnant’ of people who have a holy discontentment with the spiritual status quo. These people are fed-up with hollow and nominal religion, and know in their bones that false idols and ideologies are leading people astray. They know that God wants so much more for His people than nominal, dry, practically dead religion. Through repentance, fasting, prayer and utter dependence on God, they prepare the ground for Him to move in power and bring about renewal. -- 2 Chronicles 7:14 - “If my people, who bear my name, humble themselves, pray and seek my face, and turn from their evil ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.” -- “Renewal comes when we are sickened by our false gods and the broken promises of our impotent idols and ideologies. Christians have died to old ways of being, and have been raised to new life. That new life is marked by an eager expectation of his second coming. But as we wait, we are to cultivate virtues that align with our new identity as “God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved”.

As God’s chosen people, Christians are being renewed into the image of God. This progressive ‘sanctification’ is the process by which we become more like Christ - indeed - more like the people we were created to be.

Paul calls the Colossians to a holy lifestyle, consistent with their new identity - to be who they truly are. In contrast to the old humanity (3:9), Christians are emulate the nature and character of Christ.

Run, John, and work, the law commands.
But gives me neither feet nor hands;
But sweeter news the gospel brings,
It bids me fly and lends me wings. - John Berridge -- "It would be nice, and fairly nearly true, to say that 'from that time forth Eustace was a different boy.' To be strictly accurate, he began to be a different boy. He had relapses. There were still many days when he could be very tiresome. But most of those I shall not notice. The cure had begun." - C. S. In the final paragraph of our study in 1 Cor. 12-14, Paul addresses some important and controversial subjects regarding the worship gathering.

Four statements to summarise what we’ve learned in this series: 1. Every believer, both male and female, young and old, is gifted to minister in the church. Pastors, Priests, and ‘Professional religious people’ aren’t more qualified to receive or exercise spiritual gifts. “A manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person for the common good”.
 --
 2. Spiritual gifts are designed primarily for the building up of the church. They ought to move you outside of yourself to serve others for the common good.
 --
 3. Spiritual gifts exercised without love are worse than useless, they are irritating and offensive. “A noisy gong or a clanging cymbal”.
Gifts will cease when Jesus returns, but love lasts forever.
 --
 4. Tongues and prophecy are more susceptible to abuse, and some of us have suffered as a result.
However, the antidote to these dangers is not to despise the gifts, but to properly exercise them in conformity to God's word. -- Preacher: Jonathan Smith Series: Gifted Passage: 1 Corinthians 14:26-40 Subscribe: apple.co/2Jht9Cs More: www.reddoorchurch.com.au

“...contrary to the opinion of many, spiritual edification can take place in ways other than through the cortex of the brain. Paul believed in an immediate communing with God by means of the Spirit that sometimes bypassed the mind...”

- Gordon Fee, The First Epistle to the Corinthians

While the primary purpose of spiritual gifts is the building up of the corporate church, Paul’s description of tongues in 1 Corinthians identifies it primarily as a form of prayer for self-edification.

"This is not a suggestion or mere advice or wise counsel. This is a divine command, a mandate from God himself. If you and I are not earnestly desiring spiritual gifts, especially prophecy, we are disobedient...
--
This is not an issue for prayer. You do not respond to this passage by saying, “Well, ok, I’ll pray about it.” No. You don’t pray about whether or not you are going to obey God. God is not giving us a choice. He’s giving us a command. The only choice you have is whether or not you are going to obey."

Christians should pursue experiences of the Spirit in which we are anointed and empowered by His intimate presence.
This is what the Bible calls the “filling” of the Spirit.

"A man and his little child [are] walking down the road and they are walking hand in hand, and the child knows that he is the child of his father, and he knows that his father loves him, and he rejoices in that, and he is happy in it. There is no uncertainty about it all, but suddenly the father, moved by some impulse, takes hold of the child and picks him up, [cradles] him in his arms, kisses him, embraces him, showers his love upon him, and then he puts him down again and they go on walking together.
That is it! The child knew before that his father loved him, and he knew that he was his child. But oh! the loving embrace, this extra outpouring of love, this unusual manifestation of it — that is the kind of thing. The Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are the children of God.”

Gifts of knowledge/wisdom and discernment are “revelatory” gifts because they are (often) concerned with something the Holy Spirit reveals that could not otherwise be known. -- Preacher: Jonathan Smith Series: Gifted Passage: 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 Subscribe: apple.co/2Jht9Cs More: www.reddoorchurch.com.au

At Red Door we believe in the ‘convergence’ of three Christian traditions: 1) the centrality of the Gospel and the authority of the Scriptures (Reformed); 2) the necessity of regularly participating in Baptism and Communion, and the employment of liturgy that connects us to the universal church through time (Sacramental); and 3) the validity and practice of all spiritual gifts in the life of the local church (Charismatic). -- Preacher: Jonathan Smith Series: Gifted Passage: 1 Corinthians Subscribe: apple.co/2Jht9Cs More: www.reddoorchurch.com.au

The church at Corinth is a mess! On the one hand, they have gratefully received the Gospel and pursued all the gifts of the Spirit, but on the other hand, they are living in a way that makes a mockery of Jesus’ call to discipleship.

In the context of ongoing conflict and controversy with those who oppose him, and private instruction with his disciples, Jesus lays out the radical life of discipleship his followers are called to live.
