For more than 20 years, BSC has been capturing and exporting the sounds of Memphis and the Delta region. It is our mission to celebrate the culture of our region by sharing our music with the world.
Will Graves and Soul reunite after nearly a decade for a special birthday concert at the Green Room in Crosstown Arts, delivering their high-energy mixture of soul, R&B, funk. Lead singer and keyboardist William Graves II, whose standout talent earned him a Grammy showcase win from the Memphis chapter of NARAS, leads a lineup of Memphis’s finest musicians through electrifying performances. From soulful originals to surprise guest moments, this reunion concert honors Will’s enduring influence on the Memphis music scene and the power of live celebration.
This week on Beale Street Caravan we have Grammy Award winning saxophonist and Memphis music icon, Kirk Whalum. Kirk releases a new album, Humanite, on October 11. Also this week, we mark BSC host, Pat Mitchell-Worley's 20th year hosting the show!
This week on Beale Street Caravan we feature Gospel stars, The McCrary Sisters. Their father, Sam McCrary, was a minister and founder of Gospel legends, The Fairfield Four. Alice, a violinist based in Memphis, leads the fiddle-powered group, performing original compositions that blend rock, folk, and jazz. Art on Fire is an annual event supporting the Dixon’s art and horticulture programs, featuring live music, food, drinks, and a bonfire.
This week's episode of Beale Street Caravan brings you an electrifying performance by JD Warren & The Rudiment, recorded live at the Green Room. Led by the husband-and-wife duo Jeremy and Dermel Warren, this NYC-based jazz group with Memphis roots infuses their music with deep soul and gospel, while also drawing on hip-hop and jazz influences. Their debut album, “I Can Do All Things,” showcases their distinctive sound.
This week on Beale Street Caravan, we return to the blues with Memphis' native son, Chris Pitts and The Memphis Prime, live from Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale, MS.
This week we have the highly anticipated Brian Owens & The Deacons of Soul in a live performance captured at the Levitt Shell. Brian Owens comes to us from his hometown of St Louis, our Mississippi River cousin to the north. Much like our rivertown neighbor to the south, New Orleans, it’s a city long associated with the sounds of the African American created genres of blues, jazz, gospel, and soul. He recently released an album called Soul of Cash… a soulful reimagining of works from Memphis music icon Johnny Cash’s catalouge.

In early 1970, Booker T Jones was on sabbatical in California having grown disillusioned with confines of Stax Records and Memphis, when he heard the Beatles' latest effort, Abbey Road. So moved was he by the Beatles' genius and daring, that he sat down and drafted his own Memphis-style tribute to the group. The album, released later that same year, is titled McLemore Avenue, after the street where Stax's studio and headquarters were located. This week on BSC, we have Memphis' very own Booker T and The MG's tribute band, The Maitre D's, performing McLemore Avenue from start to finish in a performance captured on the cutting room floor of Studio A at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music.

This week on the program we feature the First Lady of Soul, Candi Staton in a live performance captured at AmericanaFest, and, later in the program, we get to sit down and catch up with her for an in depth interview. Candi received her first record deal as a teenager and spent the formative years of her life touring the gospel circuit in the 1950’s alongside such luminaries as The Soul Stirrers, Mahalia Jackson, and CL Franklin, father of the late Aretha Franklin. 33 Albums and 4 Grammy nominations later, Candi Staton is a proud inductee of the Christian Music Hall of Fame for her brilliant work in the gospel genre.
Grammy nominated blues artist, Cedric Burnside, is back with us this week. Cedric is the grandson of the late, great R.L. Burnside, and he plays the Hill Country blues like nobody else. This performance was captured at The Memphis Blues Society’s Bonafide Blues Festival during Bridging the Blues.

From the Caravan vault: We’re excited to feature the world’s oldest teenager, Rufus Thomas. Rufus is synonymous with Memphis and Beale Street, having began his career at 10 years old tap as a tap dancer on Beale. His prodigiousness was passed to his offspring, Carla, Marvell, and Vanese, who, with their father and on their own, crafted influential music careers.This week’s show captures Carla performing at BB Kings’ Blues Club on Beale Street back in 2001. This week on Beale Street Caravan we’ve got one of the newest, most exciting groups on the Memphis scene, Black Cream. The band joined together two years ago. The four members Derek, T.O., Courtney and Chris are Memphis natives with years of experience backing others and playing solo. Black Cream combine melodious vocals over power trio instrumentation for a sound that is as edgy as it is soulful. They released their first single, “All I Need Is You,” earlier this year. This week on Beale Street Caravan we have hill country blues torch-bearer R. L. Boyce at his 2nd Annual Birthday Picnic in Como, Mississippi. Beginning as a youngster in the Rising Star Fife and Drum band with Otha Turner, Boyce is often noted as a protege of blues icon and fellow Como-native Mississippi Fred McDowell. In 2017, his album “Roll and Tumble” was nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Traditional Blues Album. Listen to R. The band has recently signed to Blue Barrel Records and released a full-length record produced by Matt Ross-Spang.

Bluesman Leo “Bud” Welch passed away December 19, 2017 at the age of 85. Born in 1932 in Sabougla, Mississippi, Welch spent his entire life in the Hill Country of North Mississippi. We are rebroadcasting this episode, originally aired in 2016, in tribute to our friend, Bud. As a bonus, this episode also contains a feature of Cadillac John Nolden.
In early 1970, Booker T Jones was on sabbatical in California having grown disillusioned with confines of Stax Records and Memphis, when he heard the Beatles’ latest effort, Abbey Road. So moved was he by the Beatles’ genius and daring, that he sat down and drafted his own Memphis-style tribute to the group. The album, released later that same year, is titled McLemore Avenue, after the street where Stax’s studio and headquarters were located. This week on BSC, we have Memphis’ very own Booker T and The MG’s tribute band, The Maitre D’s, performing McLemore Avenue from start to finish in a performance captured on the cutting room floor of Studio A at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music.

Robert Finley got his big break at last year’s King Biscuit Blues Festival when he talked the sound engineer into letting him get on stage in between acts and play a song. He wowed the crowd, captured the attention of Music Makers Relief and went home with a record deal in his pocket. He joins us this week in a performance captured during Bridging The Blues celebrating the release of his debut record, Age Don’t Mean A Thing, on Big Legal Mess Records.

We wrap our 21st year on the air with an encore performance from The Lovelight Orchestra. It's real-deal Memphis Blues. The sophisticated blues and jazz sounds you would have heard floating from the windows of The Palace on Beale Street in the 40's and 50's.
LLO features Blues Music Award-winner John Nemeth on vocals, Joe Restivo on guitar, Tim Goodwin on bass, Earl Lowe on drums, Gerald Stephens on keys, and a five piece horn section that includes Marc Franklin, Scott Thompson, Art Edmaiston, Jason Yasinksy, and Kirk Smothers. The band has recently signed to Blue Barrel Records and the group is working on a full-length release with producer Matt Ross-Spang. This performance was captured at Loflin Yard in downtown Memphis.

The blues music world lost a true original when L.C. Ulmer passed away on February 14th, 2016 at 87 years old. L.C. played the fish fries, picnics, gas stations, and festival stages all over Mississippi and then took the music of the deep delta all over the U.S. He was a traveling solo musician, emcee, one-man band, and a band leader. L.C. was one of the funniest and most congenial people we've ever me, and as you'll hear in today's program, one of the best interview subjects we've ever had. BSC lost a longtime friend when soul music great Otis Clay passed away on January 8th. Otis began his career in Mississippi performing in gospel groups, but fate brought him to Memphis where he rose to prominence behind R&B hits such as "Trying to Live my Life Without You" and "All Because of Your Love," each of those songs birthed through the production genius of Memphis' Willie Mitchell and the Hi Records Rhythm Section. The prevailing stories would lead us to believe that all the great bluesmen hopped trains out of the Delta, landing in Memphis and Chicago to launch their careers, but that's not really the case. Countless artists remained to provide the soundtrack for life in the Delta. Artists made their careers in the churches, the juke joints, the picnics, and the house parties. We have two such artists with us as octogenarians Cadillac John Nolden and Leo "Bud" Welch bring their authentic, foot-stomping sounds to the airwaves this week.
Garage rock icon Jack Oblivian is with us this week! Jack's uncompromising brand of Memphis rock and roll represents one of our favorite facets of "The Memphis Sound." From his work as a member of The Oblivians, his prolific stream of solo and side projects, to the many artists and bands that he's influenced, Jack O continues to generate enormous appreciation locally and abroad. Honed and refined (or unrefined, depending on your point of view) through decades on the Chitlin' Circuit, his self-described "folk-funk" act has become a headlining attraction at festivals and events around the world. But this week we've got something a little different - Bobby Rush, stripped down and raw, backed only by Super Chikan on guitar, and singing his hits and telling the stories behind the songs. A couple of days before his unexpected passing, John Fry, a longtime supporter and source of inspiration for BSC, had called up post-producer Adam Hill and in their conversation jokingly mentioned how great it would be to hear the Big Star show again during our re-broadcasts over the holidays. So as we step into this new year, it seems a fitting thing today to remember those who won't be making this leg of the journey with us.
