Employees who have a best friend at work are seven times more engaged than those who don’t. What’s behind this staggering statistic? This is a fast-moving conversation with a funny, clever, and wise man so hold on to your hat! I just had to rebroadcast my episode with guest and one of my favorite mentors, Michael Bungay Stanier. Michael is an award-winning and sought-after coach, author, and speaker. We talked about his best-selling book, The Coaching Habit. Michael wants us leaders to learn to stay a little more curious a little longer and rush to ideas and advice a little more slowly, which will ultimately let us be more effective and work less hard. He teaches us three of the seven coaching questions from his book that will help you have better coach-like conversations that take 10 minutes or less. We discuss the neuroscience of engagement, ways to help people get more ‘Ahas’ to cement their insights and learning, and the kind of question we should all try to avoid. I loved his concept of the Advice Monster (which is the topic of the latest bestselling book which Michael published after this episode first aired, titled The Advice Trap). Finally, as in every episode of The TalentGrow Show, Michael shares a highly actionable piece of advice to help you upgrade your leadership skills right away – this one in answer to a listener’s question. Listen and please share with others!

We have two different but complementary mindsets, according to Brian Levenson--- one for preparing effectively, and one for performing. Brian is the author of Shift Your Mind and the founder of Strong Skills, an organization that provides coaching, speaking, and consulting to elite organizations, performers, and leaders. On this episode of The TalentGrow Show, Brian joins Halelly to discuss nine mental shifts that will allow you to thrive in preparation and in performance. Discover why we don’t have to be -- and in fact shouldn’t be -- the same person in preparation and in performance, why authenticity is “elastic, not rigid,” and what strategies you can use to develop your two complementary mindsets and achieve maximum results. Brian shares actionable tips you won’t want to miss, including what he calls “having a grandma in your back pocket,” so be sure to tune in and share this episode with others!

Receiving feedback is an important leadership skill that we can all develop, and it’s not just up to managers to give it – it’s something we all can and should do more of (and ask for!) and improve our skills in doing so. In this rebroadcast episode of the TalentGrow show with Halelly Azulay, Sheila Heen, CEO of Triad Consulting and best-selling author of Thanks for the Feedback and Difficult Conversations, shares some of her best insights on the art and science of receiving feedback. She explains what the three different kinds of feedback are (including why we need all three, but different amounts of each at different times), what the three kinds of triggered reactions we can have from feedback are, and the best way to receive vague or negative criticism. She also gives a fantastic (and highly actionable!) tip on how to ask for feedback: she warns of a common pitfall and offers a smarter way of asking that not only makes the other person more comfortable but helps to ensure that the ensuing feedback will be relevant and useful. This is an excellent episode for improving your communications skills as well as your inner-processing and emotional clarity. Listen and please share with others!

What allows a workplace culture to survive, adapt and thrive in the face of change? That is the crucial question so many leaders are (or should be) asking themselves today. On this episode of The TalentGrow Show, leadership training expert Esther Weinberg joins Halelly to tackle this issue and present the unique leadership framework she calls The Ready Zone. To operate in The Ready Zone as a leader means to measure and elevate six Zone Performance Indicators (ZPIs) that provide leaders with a practical means to reframe, refocus, and realign in the face of challenge and change. Tune in to discover the six ZPIs, learn how to develop what Esther calls your visibility quotient (VQ), and get actionable advice for unifying, inspiring and empowering your workplace culture. Do you invite people to be open with you, and to push back on your thoughts and ideas? And when you have “fierce” conversations, do you deepen your connection or push people away as a result?

This week on the TalentGrow Show, we’re rebroadcasting Halelly’s conversation with Susan Scott, best-selling author and leadership development architect, to explain what fierce conversations are and why we NEED to have more of them. Susan shares a common obstacle we all face when having these types of conversations – both at work in our personal lives – and how to overcome it. She also talks about how to be open and more transparent and invite this kind of openness from others (and what some of us might be doing to hinder that). Susan and Halelly explore why she thinks careful conversations are almost always failed conversations and the concept of radical transparency, which Susan advocates, and the difference between fierce leaders and other leaders. And of course, Susan shares one actionable suggestion that will help you upgrade your leadership and will make a HUGE difference in the quality of your conversations and your relationships. You should really begin doing it, today! Listen and don’t forget to share with others.

Trustworthiness may be the most important quality a leader can have. Interestingly, recent studies show us that there has been a dramatic decline in trust from previous generations to now. Trust in other people, in the media, and in the government, are all at all-time lows, and this inevitably feeds into the workplace, too. In this episode, trust expert, keynote speaker and author of The Book of Trust Dr. Yoram Solomon returns to The TalentGrow Show to share his new model of trust and to help leaders build their trustworthiness. You’ll discover the seven laws and six components of trust according to Yoram’s model and learn seven actionable steps you can take to build trust and be trusted. Plus, drawing from his experience as a former Israeli Defense Forces paratrooper, USAF CAP pilot, and a professor, Yoram shows us in what way trust is relative and situational, and why it’s so important to recognize this. Connecting online can be both more or less authentic, depending on your approach. But in the 21st Century, and especially now in the times of COVID-19, we have many new opportunities to connect with more and different people in a different way than ever before because of how we can create content online. We can leverage these opportunities to share more of ourselves, to be more thoughtful about how we share about ourselves, and build amazing connections and networks. In this re-broadcast episode, I chat with Michael D. Simmons, an award-winning serial entrepreneur, best-selling author and internationally-acclaimed speaker who is a world-class connector of people and ideas who loves to research, synthesize, and share ideas about building relationships in the 21st century. We also talk about how contexts collide online, creating new challenges for managing our personal brands and calling on us to become more holistic and authentic so that we’re not trying to put up a front or share the wrong things in the wrong contexts. Michael also shares the fascinating concept of the “expert generalist” or “broker” as a massively effective way for professionals to accelerate their career success (by 65%!) and increase their own learning and the value they offer to their employers, employees, and clients. With so many people focusing on being seen as a specialist or expert, this counter-intuitive approach can be a powerful one to consider tapping into. Listen and don’t forget to share with others.

The TalentGrow Show is 5 today! Happy Anniversary to us! To celebrate this momentous achievement, I thought it would be fun to walk down memory lane and pull out some gems that are potentially hiding in the first 55 episodes that I published. While I love all my episodes and guests, and am very proud of them all, I thought these were particularly good treasures to dust off and offer up for your (re)listening pleasure. So in this solo episode of The TalentGrow Show, I recap 5 episodes from the first 55 of the TalentGrow Show, plus a bonus one – the most downloaded. They cover the topics of overwhelm, engaging communication, coaching, fierce leadership, decision making, and negotiations. Enjoy!

When something positive happens, we instinctively tend to want to share our good news with others. From a relationship-building perspective, research is plentiful when it comes to supporting others in times of distress, but there is very little out there about responding constructively to someone else’s good news. On this episode of The TalentGrow Show, psychologist and professor at UC Santa Barbara Shelly Gable, Ph.D. joins Halelly to discuss her theoretical and practical framework for nurturing our relationships and generating positive outcomes with our responses. Drawing from many years of research, Shelly explains why our responses to positive news make up such a key aspect of our relationships, why Active and Constructive Responding (ACR) is the most effective and authentic way to respond, and how leaders can leverage ACR to build better relationships at work and at home. Listen and remember to share this episode with others!

The “feedback sandwich” is a popular method of delivering constructive feedback. It basically means sandwiching your negative feedback inside of positive feedback to lessen the blow, and it can seem reasonable at first glance. But I’m hoping that after you listen to this episode, you’ll never use the feedback sandwich ever again. On this solo episode of The TalentGrow Show, I explain why the popular feedback sandwich method is actually harmful and ineffective in the long-run, and what approach you should be using instead when you deliver constructive feedback. So listen and, please, don’t serve up that nasty feedback sandwich anymore!

Giving feedback can be one of the toughest tasks for leaders. Many of us are reluctant to give critical feedback, partly from fear of seeming like a jerk. The best approach, according to bestselling author and former Google executive Kim Scott, is to care personally while challenging directly. She calls this radical candor. On this episode of The TalentGrow Show, Kim joins Halelly to share how leaders can become great bosses without losing our humanity by leveraging the Radical Candor framework. You’ll learn how to feedback without falling into the common traps of obnoxious aggression, manipulative insincerity, or ruinous empathy, and why you probably need to reevaluate the way you think about praise and criticism. Plus, find out why it’s a mistake to avoid people who are mad at you! Listen to this episode and be sure to share it with others.

Life is not easy and all of us face cross-roads where we need to make a big, scary decision. We all face the fear of making the wrong decision, but sometimes that fear can lead to inaction or playing safe. But if we use this clarifying question, we can usually move forward to choose a path of no (or least) regrets. On this solo episode of the TalentGrow Show, the third in my three-part mini-series on courage, I tell two short stories: One, about a young woman’s career choice. And the other, about a decision that my spouse, David, and I faced with our skater son Guy’s schooling. And I describe how asking a magic question helped create clarity and courage for forward momentum and a life of no regrets. Take a listen, weigh in with your own opinion, and share with others could use this suggestion!

A mistake many busy leaders make is to just focus on getting the work done. They fall into the role of task master and interact with their team members on a task-basis only. Your workplace interactions with your employees should be about more than just work tasks. The more that your team members feel like you care to see and know them as humans (not just workers), the more they feel a brain-based need to reciprocate that same care and attention. Caring, vulnerability, curiosity, kindness, and caring build trust. In this solo episode of the TalentGrow Show, Halelly shares a personal story from a recent workshop in which learning this lesson deeply moved the participants and generated insights and commitments to change. She discusses why you should increase your intimacy with your team members – to know them better – and how to get started (plus what NOT to do). Take a listen, weigh in with your own opinion, and share with others!

While we take a vacation, we’re rebroadcasting a few of our favorite episodes from the archives of the earlier years of the show. This one was originally broadcast as episode 15. Enjoy! All of us are both leaders and followers. While we often focus on how to lead, author, speaker, workshop presenter and innovative thinker Ira Chaleff has focused his career on the beneficial use of power between those who are leading and those who are following in any given situation. Ira chatted with TalentGrow Show host, Halelly Azulay, about ways in which we can all become more courageous followers and why there are times when we should all choose the path of intelligent disobedience. Taken from the lexicon of guide dog training, Ira introduces the term Intelligent Disobedience to fit our model of leadership and followership in organizations, societies, and families. Based on his latest book of the same name, Ira talks about when we should feel the responsibility – even the obligation – to speak up and push back to those in power, because it is the right thing to do and it helps our leaders avoid big, possibly hurtful, mistakes. And Halelly and Ira discuss the important ways in which, as leaders, we can create the kinds of cultures that supports courageous followership. This episode will expand your view of leadership, courage, and living in a principled way and leave you deeply inspired.

Workshops, training classes, and university classes are rarely the only way to develop skills. In fact, they’re often not the best way to develop certain skills. Halelly wrote about this in her book, Employee Development on a Shoestring. There are so many ways that you can develop skills and knowledge – including leadership skills -- outside of the classroom and in a way that doesn’t interfere with your current role or take up a lot of time or money. In this short solo episode of the TalentGrow Show, Halelly shares three specific examples of non-training, inexpensive ways to develop your leadership skills – and those of the leaders you lead, of course – to help you become a better leader and/or get recognized as a leader if you’re not there yet. Leadership development is not out of reach! Take a listen and share with others.

Confidence is a major contributing factor to accomplishing our goals and how we are perceived in the workplace. However, it's not a naturally occurring trait in all of us. Do you suffer from low confidence? This one’s for you, then. Here’s another Ask Halelly episode of the TalentGrow Show, where Halelly answers a question from a listener, a member of the audience at one of her conference speaking events, a learner in one of her corporate workshops, or a member of the media. Halelly first explains the difference between earned and unmerited confidence. Then she breaks down how we can build our confidence in a way that is professional and empowering, demonstrate our confidence in a way that gets us noticed for new opportunities, and avoid being seen as pompous or boastful, or worse, full of air and empty of content. Take a listen, weigh in with your own opinion, and share with others!

Effective delegation is an essential supervisory skill. Any leader who supervises the work of others must learn to delegate effectively in order to accomplish his or her goals. As you move into a leadership role you must remove some of the work you previously accomplished on your own in order to make time for performance management and leadership tasks. And because that work still must be completed, you will need to delegate it to your staff. On this solo episode of the TalentGrow Show, Halelly summarizes the barriers and benefits of delegating and describes a step-by-step process to help you delegate successfully, reduce your stress, grow your talent, and create better teams. I’m sure you’ve been on the receiving end of this. The question is: are you dishing it out? Listening in a distracted way during an important conversation. So-called “multitasking” when you really ought to be giving your full attention. Science has shown us that we can’t actually multitask on executive function brain tasks, so let’s stop the charade and quit this nasty and increasingly common habit. On today’s solo episode of the TalentGrow Show, Halelly will share a story from a recent workshop participant where this issue came up. Then she’ll explain why it’s not wise to do something else that requires your thinking bandwidth during critical conversations (the kind where there’s an important outcome and your relationship is on the line). Like reading or writing emails, for example. Even if others are doing it. Even if your senior leaders do it. Don’t. Take a listen now and share with those who could also benefit!

Happy New Year! To celebrate 2018 (and to allow us a little break from production during the holidays), we're rebroadcasting Halelly's favorite episode of 2018 - episode 83 featuring Daniel Pink. Enjoy!!

Original description: Timing, according to bestselling author Daniel Pink, is a crucial element of productivity and performance. In fact, research shows that our performance on cognitive tests is affected by up to 20 percent by the time of day alone. So how can we use this information to increase our own performance? In this exciting episode of The TalentGrow Show, Daniel Pink explains the big ideas behind his new book, When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, and shares very actionable advice for arranging your own schedule – and your team’s – in a way that takes advantage of your peak-performance times. Our lives are a never-ending stream of “when”-decisions, and Daniel shows us how to base these decisions on science rather than intuition or guesswork. Learn about the three performance stages we each experience in any given day, the different chronotypes we all fall into, and how to use all of this information to help us flourish at work -- especially as current or aspiring leaders. Listen and share with others!

Too often, high-performers are promoted to a higher position in a company and then left to their own devices to navigate the transition. What do you need to know to succeed at the next level? In this episode of The TalentGrow Show, Halelly brings back her first-ever guest on the show, author and executive coach Scott Eblin, to share insights from the newly revised 3rd edition of his best-selling book, The Next Level: What Insiders Know About Executive Success. He believes that there are three leadership imperatives that are critical to success: manage yourself, leverage your team, and engage your colleagues. Listen to discover the meaning of these imperatives while also learning about leadership presence, the importance of being humble and vulnerable with your team, and why finding a ‘work-life balance’ isn’t necessarily the right goal to set your sights on! Ultimately, Scott outlines which behaviors and beliefs you need to let go of at the next level, and which ones you need to pick up. Here’s another Ask Halelly episode of the TalentGrow Show, where Halelly answers a question from a listener, a learner in one of her corporate workshops, a member of the audience at one of her conference speaking events, or a member of the media. This week’s question came from a reporter who interviewed Halelly for a Fast Company article about this very issue. Halelly’s answer: Yeah, there is a difference. But, STOP SPLITTING HAIRS about it already! She explains why she loves to hate this question and wishes it would go away. Plus, she shares about a couple of exchanges she had about this on Twitter – were they favorable? Take a listen, weigh in with your own opinion, and share with others!
