In today's Bible study, Joshua asked God a simple question that many of us are asking, are you for me or against me. But God gave him an answer he wasn't expecting. God told him no.
Key Verse:
When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing before him with his drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, "Are you for us, or for our adversaries?" And he said, "No; but I am the commander of the army of the Lord . Now I have come." And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped and said to him, "What does my Lord say to his servant?"
Joshua 5:13-14
In today's Bible study, God told Joshua if he did 3 things, his life would be successful. If we do these 3 things our lives will be successful too!

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
Joshua 1:8
In today's Bible study, God gave the Israelites a choice. He said they could choose a blessing or a curse. We have the same choice today.

See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse
Deuteronomy 11:26
In today's Bible study, God is the one who gives us the power to create wealth. Do you honor God with your money?
Key Verse:
Beware lest you say in your heart, 'My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.'
Deuteronomy 8:17
In today's Bible study, it isn't enough to just be saved by grace, God wants us to be righteous. But how do we do that?
Key Verse:
And it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to do all this commandment before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us.'
Deuteronomy 6:25
In today's Bible study, God told the Israelites what they needed to do so He would show His love to them. We can do the same today and get the same result!

but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Deuteronomy 5:10
In today's Bible study, God wants us to raise our kids to fear Him. Not just take our kids to church or tell them to pray, but to have an actual relationship with God.

Gather the people to me, that I may let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children so.'
Deuteronomy 4:10b
In today's Bible study, sometimes it's hard to understand the laws of the Old Testament. Some of the laws may seem outdated, strange or downright icky, but these laws were revolutionary at the time and the basis of our morality today.

And what great nation is there, that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law that I set before you today?
Deuteronomy 4:8
In today's Bible study, God promised the Israelites that He would fight their battles for them. He's saying the same thing to you.

You shall not fear them, for it is the Lord your God who fights for you.
Deuteronomy 3:22
In today's Bible study I finally find out why Balaam is called wicked in the Bible, even though the only story I know about him is about him doing what God tells him to do.

Numbers 31:16
In today's Bible study, when Phinehas saw someone sinning publicly in the Israelite camp he didn't wait, he took action!

When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose and left the congregation and took a spear in his hand and went after the man of Israel into the chamber and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. Thus the plague on the people of Israel was stopped.

Numbers 22:18

In today's Bible study, God told Moses to make a statue of a snake on a stick. he said the Israelites would be saved from dying if they looked at it. Turns out the same is true for you an me...

Numbers 21:9
In today's Bible study, God told the Levites to take what was given to God as their portion, but to dedicate the best portion to Him. Are you giving God the best in your life?

Out of all the gifts to you, you shall present every contribution due to the Lord; from each its best part is to be dedicated.'
Numbers 18:29
In today's Bible study, the Israelites we're terrified to be in God presence because almost everyone who was died. We can freely be with God whenever we want, but we take it for granted.

Everyone who comes near, who comes near to the tabernacle of the Lord , shall die. Are we all to perish?"
Numbers 17:13
In today's Bible study, many Christians have the idea in their heads that God is about giving us the bare minimum, But God is a God of extravagance.

On the next day Moses went into the tent of the testimony, and behold, the staff of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted and put forth buds and produced blossoms, and it bore ripe almonds.
Numbers 17:8
In today's Bible study, many Christians think when something is going wrong in their life, it's because God is punishing them for some sin they've committed. This isn't true.
In today's Bible study, I get really excited about an amazing story most people don't know in Numbers 16. As a plague starts killing people left and right, Aaron runs and stops the plague and literally stand between the living and the dead.

And Moses said to Aaron, "Take your censer, and put fire on it from off the altar and lay incense on it and carry it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them, for wrath has gone out from the Lord ; the plague has begun." So Aaron took it as Moses said and ran into the midst of the assembly. And behold, the plague had already begun among the people. And he put on the incense and made atonement for the people. And he stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was stopped.
Numbers 16:46-48
In today's Bible study, when Korah and a few others stood up and questioned Moses and Aaron's leadership, God spoke up. God puts leaders into place and He honors that position even if we don't.

They assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron and said to them, "You have gone too far! For all in the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the Lord ?"
Numbers 16:3
In today's Bible study, a short story in Numbers where a man is put to death because he was caught gathering sticks.
Key Verse:
While the people of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day. And those who found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation. They put him in custody, because it had not been made clear what should be done to him. And the Lord said to Moses, "The man shall be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp." And all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him to death with stones, as the Lord commanded Moses.
Numbers 15:32-36
In today's Bible study, after deciding not to go into the promise land and God telling them they would have t wander the wilderness for 40 years, the Israelites decided to go into the promise land. It didn't turn out well for them.

And they rose early in the morning and went up to the heights of the hill country, saying, "Here we are. We will go up to the place that the Lord has promised, for we have sinned."
Numbers 14:40
In today's Bible study, a lot of Christians have the feeling their devotions aren't as good as they should be. But I don't think that's true.
In today's Bible study, the Israelites wanted to go back to Egypt because they thought it would be better to die there, than at the hands of the Canaanites. We often do the same thing.
Key Verse:
Why is the Lord bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?"
Numbers 14:3
In today's Bible study, a lot of times we think everyone is looking at us and judging us. But almost always, the people around you don't see you the way you see yourself.
Key Verse:
And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them."
Numbers 13:33
In today's Bible study, it's Freebie Friday and I'm talking about cruise control! And how some Christians do really well for a while, then stop doing well.
In today's Bible study, Caleb knew God called the Israelites to go into the Promise Land, even if it looked like they weren't going to make it.
Key Verse:
But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, "Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it."
Numbers 13:30
In today's Bible study, Aaron and Miriam were racist against Moses' wife, but it was all a front for the fact they wanted to be in charge instead of Moses.

Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married, for he had married a Cushite woman.
Numbers 12:1
In today's Bible study, Moses doubted God could provide meat for the entire nation of Israel. A lot of times, we doubt God too.

And the Lord said to Moses, "Is the Lord 's hand shortened? Now you shall see whether my word will come true for you or not."
Numbers 11:23
In today's Bible study, the Israelites complained about not having meat to eat because the rabble with them were complaining. Christians need to be wise with what friends they choose.
Key Verse:
Now the rabble that was among them had a strong craving. And the people of Israel also wept again and said, "Oh that we had meat to eat!
Numbers 11:4
In today's Bible study, it's Freebie Friday and I want to talk about something serious. Can someone who commits suicide go to heaven?

In today's Bible study, the Israelites complained to God, then God punished them. Then they complained again and God punished them. They kept doing the same thing over and over, so God kept punishing them over and over.
Key Verse:
And the people complained in the hearing of the Lord about their misfortunes, and when the Lord heard it, his anger was kindled, and the fire of the Lord burned among them and consumed some outlying parts of the camp. Then the people cried out to Moses, and Moses prayed to the Lord , and the fire died down.
Numbers 11:1-2
Today's Bible study, the lampstands made for the Tabernacle weren't cut of soldered together. They were made entirely of one piece of gold, hammered together into an intricately detailed piece of art. Seems like a good metaphor for our Christian walk.
Key Verse:
And this was the workmanship of the lampstand, hammered work of gold. From its base to its flowers, it was hammered work; according to the pattern that the Lord had shown Moses, so he made the lampstand.
Numbers 8:4
God told Moses, to tell Aaron, to tell the people of Israel something that would bless all of them.
Key Verse:
The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
Numbers 6:24-26
In today's Bible study, God was very specific about how the Israelites were to set up their camp. Turns out, it was setup in a shape that if the Israelites had been able to see it, they wouldn't have recognized it.
Key Verse:
The people of Israel shall camp each by his own standard, with the banners of their fathers' houses. They shall camp facing the tent of meeting on every side.

Instead of talking about a single verse, I'm going to be talking about some other topic that's on my mind. This week, tipping.
How much should a Christian tip? Should Christians tip more than regular people? Does Jesus say anything about tipping? That's what we're talking about today!
In today's Bible study, God said to honor your elders and stand up before gray haired people.
Key Verse:
You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the Lord .
Leviticus 19:32
God told the Israelites not to harvest everything they spent the entire year growing. Why is that?
Key Verse:
And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God.
Leviticus 19:10
God doesn't want us to be like the world around us, but why does He want that?
Key Verse:
Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them, You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.
Leviticus 19:2
God didn't want the Israelites to look and act like the other peoples around them. He wants the same thing for you and me.
Key Verse:
You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you lived, and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan, to which I am bringing you. You shall not walk in their statutes.
Leviticus 18:3
The first several chapters of Leviticus several very specific sacrifices the Israelites had to make to God. To modern people, it seems gross and barbaric, but to the Israelites it was revolutionary and freeing.
Key Verse:
This is the law of the burnt offering, of the grain offering, of the sin offering, of the guilt offering, of the ordination offering, and of the peace offering,
Leviticus 7:37
The Israelites knew where they were going, but they didn't go anywhere unless God was leading them.
Key Verse:
Throughout all their journeys, whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the people of Israel would set out. But if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out till the day that it was taken up.
Exodus 40:36-37
When Moses told the Israelites they needed supplies to build the tabernacle, they brought so much stuff Moses had to tell them to stop. When you give to the church, do you give like the Israelite?
Key Verse:
for the material they had was sufficient to do all the work, and more.
Exodus 36:7
Moses spent enough time alone with God that he literally glowed when he went back to the rest of the Israelites. When was the last time you spent enough time with God that everyone around you knew it?

When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God.
Exodus 34:29
Moses told God he didn't want to go anywhere if God wasn't going too. Is that the attitude you're taking when you're making life decisions?

And he said to him, "If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.
Exodus 33:15
Joshua stayed in the tent of meeting longer than Moses. Maybe that's why he got to go into the promised land and Moses didn't.
Key Verse:
When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
Exodus 33:11b
Moses and God talked to each other like someone talks to their friend. Is that how you talk to God?
Key Verse:
Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend.
Exodus 33:11a
The Israelites were all able to go to the tent of meeting to speak to God, but they sent Moses Instead.
Key Verse:
Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would rise up, and each would stand at his tent door, and watch Moses until he had gone into the tent. When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the Lord would speak with Moses. And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, each at his tent door.
Exodus 33:8-10
Moses pitched the tent of meeting outside the Israelite camp. A lot of times we pitch t our tent of meeting outside our own camps.
Key Verse:
Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the Lord would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp.
Exodus 33:7
The first person to be filled with the Holy Spirit was all the way back in Exodus. He was a craftsman just like my dad who died about a year ago.
Key Verse:
See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft.
Exodus 31:2-5
God lead the Isrealites out of Egypt so He could hang out with them.
Key Verse:
And they shall know that I am the Lord their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt that I might dwell among them. I am the Lord their God.
Exodus 29:46
The Israelites vowed to obey God and all of His commands, but we know that they had a really hard time following through with that vow.
Key Verse:
Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord and all the rules. And all the people answered with one voice and said, "All the words that the Lord has spoken we will do.
Exodus 24:3
Taking a quick dive into hermeneutics today, talking about cultural context and a super random command from God in Exodus.

You shall not boil a young goat in its mother's milk.
Exodus 23:19b
God wanted to make His people different than the rest of the world. One of the ways He did this was by making sure they were good to the helpless.

You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child.
Exodus 22:22
What does the Bible say about slavery? What does God think about slavery? Exodus 22 has a lot to say about slavery, most of it looks pretty bad...
Key Verse:
Whoever steals a man and sells him, and anyone found in possession of him, shall be put to death.
Exodus 21:16
There are tons of promises in the Bible, but there's also a lot of "if's"
Key Verse:
Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine;
Exodus 19:5
Jethro told Moses what he was doing was bad, but it wasn't really Jethro speaking, it was God.
Key Verse:
Moses' father-in-law said to him, "What you are doing is not good.
Exodus 18:17
Israel's first battle was pretty remarkable. the only reason they won is because Aaron and Hit held up Moses' arms. Key Verse: But Moses' hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. Exodus 17:12
God gave the Israelites Manna to eat while they were wandering the wilderness. Sure, bread that shows up everyday is pretty miraculous, but it' was more miraculous than you think!
Key Verse:
And the people of Israel did so. They gathered, some more, some less. But when they measured it with an omer, whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack. Each of them gathered as much as he could eat.
Exodus 16:17-18
Nobody likes a complainer, not even God. The Israelites started complained as soon as they left Egypt. Eventually it started causing them problems.
Key Verse:
And the people grumbled against Moses, saying, "What shall we drink?"
Exodus 15:24
After crossing the Red Sea, Moses and Israelites stopped to praise God. We should too.
Key Verse:
The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise him, my father's God, and I will exalt him.
Exodus 15:2
The Israelites were trapped by the Red Sea and the Egyptians were on their way to take them back into slavery. What did Moses say to them? He said be silent.
Key Verse:
The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent."
Exodus 14:14
God lead the Israelites as a giant pillar of smoke and fire. Even though there's no pillar, God still want to lead you.
Key Verse:
And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night.
Exodus 13:21
The tenth plague in Egypt was the one that finally made Pharaoh let the Israelites go, but it was also pointing towards Jesus' coming.
Key Verse:
For when Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of animals. Therefore I sacrifice to the Lord all the males that first open the womb, but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.'
Exodus 13:15
When God sent the ten plagues to Egypt, they skipped the land of Goshen where the Israelites lived.
Key Verse:
Only in the land of Goshen, where the people of Israel were, was there no hail.
Exodus 9:26
Pharaoh didn't just go along with the idea when Moses told him to let the Israelites go. In fact Pharaoh made it even worse for the Israelites.
Key Verse:
Let heavier work be laid on the men that they may labor at it and pay no regard to lying words."
Exodus 5:9
Exodus 4 has one of the most bizarre and least talked about stories in the Bible. If you do ever read it, you probably come away scratching your head. Let me try and explain it to you.
Key Verse:
Then Zipporah took a flint and cut off her son's foreskin and touched Moses' feet with it and said, "Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me!"
Exodus 4:25
God told Moses He would cause the Israelites to plunder the Egyptians and take their gold and silver when they left Egypt. God make Israel one of the wealthiest nations in the world, and He wants to do the same for you!
Key Verse:
And I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians; and when you go, you shall not go empty, but each woman shall ask of her neighbor, and any woman who lives in her house, for silver and gold jewelry, and for clothing. You shall put them on your sons and on your daughters. So you shall plunder the Egyptians."
Exodus 3:21-22
We know Moses' story from the beginning to the end. But he didn't He thought he wasn't qualified to do what god told him to do. Just like Moses, you are uniquely qualified to do what God calls you to do.

But Moses said to God, "Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?"
Exodus 3:11
Even though it was 80 years before God brought the Israelites out of Egypt, He heard their cry and He knew.
Key Verse:
God saw the people of Israel—and God knew.
Exodus 2:25
Pharaoh told the midwives to kill all the male babies when they were born, bu they didn't. Instead they did one of the most brave things anyone could do.
Key Verse:
But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live.
Exodus 1:17
The more the Egyptians persecuted the Israelites, the stronger they became.
Key Verse:
But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel.
Exodus 1:12
After their dad died, Joseph's brothers thought for sure Joseph would kill them for what they did to him. But that's not what happened.
Key Verse:
But Joseph said to them, "Do not fear, for am I in the place of God?
Genesis 50:19
Jacob prophesied over his son Issachar that he would voluntarily go into slavery. I think you and I should do the same.
Key Verse:
Issachar is a strong donkey, crouching between the sheepfolds. He saw that a resting place was good, and that the land was pleasant, so he bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant at forced labor.
Genesis 49:14-15
When Jacob blessed his sons he prophesied about them and their descendants, but when he blessed Judah he prophesied about Jesus.
Key Verse:
The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
Genesis 49:10
Jacob blessed Joseph's sons, but he didn't bless them how he should have. His words shaped the way these two sons' future for generations.
Key Verse:
But his father refused and said, "I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great. Nevertheless, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall become a multitude of nations."
Genesis 48:19
Have you ever wondered why Joseph isn't one of the 12 tribes of Israel? He's one of Jacob's 12 sons, why doesn't he have his own tribe?
Key Verse:
And now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are.
Genesis 48:5
Joseph saved Egypt and his family by storing food for the famine that he knew was coming, but he also is the reason the Israelite ended up being slaves to the Egyptians.
Key Verse:
So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for all the Egyptians sold their fields, because the famine was severe on them. The land became Pharaoh's. As for the people, he made servants of them from one end of Egypt to the other.
Genesis 47:20-21
Joseph's brothers spoke before they thought about the consequences. They basically promised to let themselves be put to death.
Key Verse:
Whichever of your servants is found with it shall die, and we also will be my Lord's servants."
Genesis 44:9
When Joseph interpreted Pharaoh's dream, he also gave him a plan of what to do about it. God doesn't just give touchy feely advice, He give practical instructions you can use.
Key Verse:
Let Pharaoh proceed to appoint overseers over the land and take one-fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt during the seven plentiful years.
Genesis 41:34
Joseph didn't take the credit when he interpreted Pharaoh's dream. He gave all the credit to God. We need to do the same.
Key Verse:
Joseph answered Pharaoh, "It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh a favorable answer."
Genesis 41:16
Joseph thought that the cup bearer would talk to Pharaoh and get him out of jail, but instead he had to wait for another two years.
Key Verse:
Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.
Genesis 40:23
Joseph quickly became the head servant in Potiphar's household, the lead prisoner in jail, then the second in command of a whole nation. God wants to promote His people into high places, we just need to act in a way that'll make Him do it. Key Verse: So Joseph found favor in his sight and attended him, and he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he had. Genesis 39:4 And: And the keeper of the prison put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever was done there, he was the one who did it. Genesis 39:22
Joseph did something pretty dumb when he told his brothers about his prophetic dream. He should have asked for Godly wisdom before he told them about it.

Now Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers they hated him even more.
Genesis 37:5
I read this verse and something crazy happened! Even though I've read it tons of times, this verse never really clicked in my head. It changes the entire story of Jacob for me.
It's important to read the Bible more than once. If you don't, you're going to miss a lot of little things. Some of these things might be something God wants to use to transform your life.

Now the days of Isaac were 180 years. And Isaac breathed his last, and he died and was gathered to his people, old and full of days. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
Genesis 35:28-29
Jacob and Esau were brothers, but they hated each other their whole lives. Jacob thought for sure Esau was going to kill him, but what Esau did surprised everyone!

But Esau ran to meet him and embraced him and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.
Genesis 33:4
After working for and being cheated by Laban for 20 years, Jacob finally packed up and left. Even though he spent 20 years being cheated and lied to, Jacob was very wealthy.

So Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah into the field where his flock was and said to them, "I see that your father does not regard me with favor as he did before. But the God of my father has been with me.
Genesis 31:4-5
Do you invite people to your home? Christ wants us to show hospitality to the people around us. Bringing people into your home is a great way to show Christ's love.
Do you know why you believe the things you believe? If someone was to ask why you're a Christian, could you answer them? It's important to think thorough your beliefs and be able to give a defense for your faith.
God like to do good things for people who live righteously, but He doesn't like to do good things for people who don't. How are you living?
Being nice to people who are nice to you is easy, But God asks us to be nice to people who hate us. Being Christ like means loving people who actively work to bring you down.
Christ suffered and He called us to suffer as well. Persecution and suffering is something we should expect as Christians. The world around us seems more and more against Christian morality, but no real persecution or suffering has happened yet.
Respecting authority is something we see God telling us to do throughout the Bible. It's not just Christian authority we're supposed to respect, all authority is set in place by God.
Some Christians say they can just have God and they don't need other believers around them. The Bible says several time this isn't true. James also tell us we need someone to confess our sins to. Why is this so important? Let's talk about that today.
