This week, some four months after California’s stay-at-home order began, the situation continues to take a turn in the wrong direction.
For the first time, California recorded more than 10,000 new cases in a single day, as the total number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in the Golden State ballooned to more than 370,000.

The federal guidelines for reopening America have been unveiled, but returning to normal could be a long way off. This, as the number of Americans testing positive for coronavirus has passed 700,000, the number of deaths has hit 37,000, and the number of those filing for unemployment as a result of the virus has ballooned to 22,000,000 in just four weeks. Of the 1.7 million confirmed cases worldwide, 500,000 are in the US. More than 18,000 Americans have succumbed to the disease, although the models keep improving in terms of how many ultimately will. This, as roughly 17 million have filed for unemployment in the past three weeks as a result of the preventative shutdown.

Dr. Oz kicks things off by evaluating the response to coronavirus in California, especially as the rates of infection and mortality have lagged behind many other less-populated states.
Oz called much of the state's response "nimble," "sage," and "decisive." While looking at Los Angeles specifically, which has yet to become a hot-spot akin to New York City, Oz pointed to aggressive social distancing practices, the non-reliance on public transportation, and early decisions to shutter schools and encourage wearing face masks.
Face masks have recently become the subject of much debate nationally, in fact, during Friday's White House briefing, President Trump found himself in hot water when he said, despite CDC recommendations to wear masks in public, he would not."Wearing a mask is great, if you can find it," Oz said. "Until we get enough of them you should, however, use cloth. Not as good as a regular mask, but a face covering of that nature can still work."
Still, while masks and other preventative measures may help to flatten the curve, another issue is lurking in the shadows, the issue of mental health. This, as millions of Americans now find themselves isolated, unemployed, and financially struggling.
"A lot of people are sitting at home now, worried, and appropriately anxious," Oz said. "Be a leader, find out what you're able to do better than anybody else... this may be your chance, this may define who you are. Take that baton and run as fast as you can, cause people desperately need help, and you could be the person who provides it."
From the latest developments in the medical and psychological spheres, the conversation pivots to a more personal realm. This, as Dr. Oz's daily show has relocated to his basement after one of his staffers contracted the virus.
Now relocated to a makeshift home studio, built earlier this year after covering the unfolding situation in China, Oz said he has now turned to his family for help producing his show, from his son who handles tech support to his wife who runs prompter and does hair and makeup.
"All of us are living this new life, don't think you're alone out there," Oz said. "Every single person you watch on television, every person you're talking to on Instagram stories, it's all the same basic story, we're just making due with what we've got."
Considered by many to be the "Jon Stewart of Egypt," from 2011 to 2014 Bassem Youssef hosted a weekly political satire show watched by over 30 million. That was, until the satirist was arrested for insulting the newly installed, military-led government, and his show was banned.
The conversation kicks off with an exploration of how the comedian's life, one accustomed to travel and large crowds, has changed in the age of Coronavirus. Youssef joked that the opportunity has allowed him to become reacquainted with his family.
"I'm getting to know my kids, and my kids are getting to know me," Youssef dead-panned. "At the beginning, they were kind of wondering 'who is that guy who's hanging around longer than he should be?'... Now, they are realizing that I am a part of their life, whether they like it or not."
From the situation in his own home, the conversation shifts to the impact the virus has had on the entertainment industry, especially in regards to late-night television, where hosts like Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah, Samantha Bee, and others are now broadcasting from their homes.
Youssef called the "show-must-go-on" mentality "courageous," saying "First of all, they are keeping the people behind the camera working, they are still maintaining their jobs, which is very important... they're keeping people entertained, they're keeping people sane."
Youssef wrapped things up with a discussion of what he hopes and fears will emerge from the ongoing pandemic.
"My fear is that we, as humans, have a very short memory," Youssef said. "We don't seem to learn from our mistakes. We don't seem to learn from history."

Now the House and Senate have passed the CARES Act, Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-CA37) breaks down how the bill will impact those Americans sitting at home weathering the storm.
"If you filed your taxes, and had a direct deposit, you just get money put directly into your account," Bass said. "If you didn't have direct deposit, then it will take you a little longer, and you'll get a check in the mail, and the check should be out in just a couple of weeks."
Bass added that while checks are helpful, they won't help pay all the bills if Americans don't have a regular income, so unemployment insurance enhancements will also be beneficial to Americans struggling through the crisis.
Bass, however, admitted there were issues with the relief package.
In California, for instance, the cost of living is higher than much of the rest of the country, many who earn $100K may be unable to afford housing in the state, but still earn above the national threshold for receiving relief payments.
"It is absolutely not enough," Bass said. "We had to do something right away, so you better believe that we're already thinking about, and planning about, a fourth bill."
This, as Bass expressed concerns that California needs federal assistance in further funding SNAP, block grants, and homeless efforts, requiring more than has currently been allocated as part of the CARES Package.
Speaking of legislation at the federal level, Bass also had some choice words for President Trump's response to the pandemic.
"I think he has been consistent over the last 3.5 years, and I think that the very sad thing that's happening now, is that this is probably the only crisis that he's had in his time that he didn't create the actual crisis," Bass said. "He has mishandled it from the beginning, leaving our country unprepared."
"The worlds' largest economy now has the world's largest number of people infected with COVID-19, this could have been prevented in terms of the large numbers," she continued.
Working from her in-district home, Bass said she's spent her time in virtual meetings, and watching Netflix's newest series "Self Made" about the life of C.J. Walker.

"Newsom has really managed to shine, I think the Sacramento Bee today called him the 'President of California,' he talks about the nation-state and the importance of what's going on here, and I think all the way along, Newsom has really led the way on this coronavirus crisis."
Marinucci said Newsom's support of efforts to keep Californians, especially older ones, at home, have allowed the state to keep the number of fatalities down, seeing just a tenth of the number of deaths in Louisiana, which itself has 1/10th of the population of the Golden State.
As Governors Newsom and Cuomo jump into the national spotlight, leading many to try and draft Cuomo as a Democratic nominee, the actual presumptive nominee, Joe Biden, has retreated from the trail to a makeshift studio in his Delaware home.
"After those wins in the primaries, Biden looked like he had a clear path to go, now this has really thrown him for a loop, I think," Marinucci said. "Really, the messaging, everything about his campaign, seems to have taken a back seat. He is hurting right now, I think, because you can't look strong from an underground bunker, and he doesn't look strong and decisive from there."
We wrap things up with legendary attorney Gloria Allred.
In the past couple years, Allred has represented accusers of both Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby. Now, one of those men has tested positive for coronavirus, the other is petitioning to move to house arrest to avoid contracting the disease in prison.
"I don't frankly wish coronavirus on anyone, including Mr. Weinstein, but I really don't have sympathy for Mr Weinstein, he is where he is because of what he has done," Allred said of the disgraced producer's diagnosis.
To avoid further community spread of the disease, Allred discussed the need for changes to the court system and prison population in the name of public health and safety.
On jury trials: "We cannot have jurors being endangered, or feeling that they are endangered, by going to court, nor can we have court personnel or attorneys, or anyone else in the courtroom endangered by having hundreds, perhaps thousands of jurors going to court... this is not the time for jury trials."

We kick things off with Dr. Paul Song. Song, the husband of journalist Lisa Ling, is a radiation oncologist and healthcare activist, advising on insurance policy, clinical trials, and Medicare for All.
Dr. Song discussed a potentially hopeful development, a study out of France that found a combination of hydroxychloroquine and zithromax had cured patients with coronavirus, eliminating the viral load in just six days.
"A lot of people are walking around, shedding viruses unknowingly, and if you can eliminate this from the body in such a short period of time, then the potential to infect others is greatly diminished, not to mention the recovery period for patients," Song said. "So while the date is very preliminary, it is extremely, extremely compelling, and very hopeful."
Song also addressed concerns back at home that the language being used by President Trump is fomenting racism against Asian-Americans, namely the use of the term "Chinese Virus," or the alleged use of the term "Kung Flu" by an unnamed White House staffer.
"More people have died of Coronavirus in Italy, than they have now in China," Song said. "So, I think to label it as one entity, to assign a boogeyman, is not helping."
This week, the Dow lost nearly 4,000 points. Business across the country deemed non-essential were closed as millions were ordered to stay home. In California, one of the harder hit industries was the entertainment business, which has seen theaters close, late night hosts broadcasting from their homes, and countless productions shut down.
Elex is joined by TMZ founder Harvey Levin to talk about the unprecedented nature of the moment.
The conversation began with a talk of how perceptions of the crisis changed once Tom Hanks announced his positive diagnosis.
Levin said that while Tom Hanks may have put a different face on the crisis, one public figure that has been the most important throughout everything has been Dr. Anthony Fauci of the CDC, who he says has had an enormous impact in connecting to the public.
Levin also pointed to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo as another leader who has emerged during this crisis.
"I think, if things got reset, and people could now start over and make a decision on who they want as the Democratic nominee, and this is no shade on Joe Biden... I think they'd pick Andrew Cuomo," Levin said. "He's a big guy, because he's Governor of New York, but I think he's become a national superstar."
Levin also discussed the long-term impact of the pandemic on the industry, saying Hollywood was already on the precipice of change, but the pandemic is speeding that change along. He wondered whether advertisers would have the money to advertise their new properties once this crisis is over, meaning streamers and networks will need to find new revenue streams.
We wrap things up with Dr. Michael Gervais, a high performance psychologist, co-founder of Compete to Create, and host of the "Finding Mastery" podcast.
This, as millions of Americans, especially those in New York, Illinois, and California, find themselves quarantined, and ordered to stay home, their emotions running high, whether those emotions are crippling anxiety or severe boredom.
"If we can feel our body, and where we feel the stress, the response is deep breathing," Gervais said of dealing with the stress and anxiety. "As mechanical as that sounds, as simple as that sounds, a long exhale sends a very strong signal to the brain to calm down, to relax - we're safe."
In addition to heavy breathing, Gervais said changing your thought process can produce a huge change, as change all starts with being aware of your own personal needs.
But stress isn't the only emotion gripping millions right now, so are loneliness and boredom.
"Immunity and social belonging are tightly linked," Gervais said. "Being with other people helps our immune system, but we don't get access to that right now, so we need to use our technology to be sure that we're staying in touch with people we love."
He suggested Americans offer words of encouragement to their loved ones and that they say things they normally can't because of the pace and rhythm of modern life.

We kick things off with Dr. Drew Pinsky, who is currently co-hosting the nightly Coronavirus Crisis special on FOX 11 with Elex. The show airs nightly at 7:00 PM, and streams for a full-hour on the FOX 11 Facebook page.
Pinsky worked to downplay the fears currently gripping many Americans who are panic-shopping in the face of a global pandemic and the declaration of a national emergency.
Most concerning to Dr. Drew is the frenzied response, the panic that has led to empty shelves and long lines at markets and stores across the country. Pinsky compared the response here to that of Italy, where the entire country is essentially shutdown, saying while "Italy blinked, we're not going to."
Thursday, during a Congressional hearing, Rep. Katie Porter (D) garnered national attention during her questioning of CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield. After failing to receive an adequate answer, Porter pushed Redfield until he agreed to pay for Coronavirus testing, regardless of a patient's insurance.
"The fact it took several minutes and many, many questions in my really holding his feet to the fire to get him there, says something about where this administration is in its lack of preparedness to address the Coronavirus pandemic," Porter said.
Porter said her position doesn't mean every American needs to get tested, but that if anyone is showing symptoms, they should have the opportunity to inquire about testing, unburdened by the cost.
Free Coronavirus testing will be covered as part of HR 6201, the relief plan the Trump administration and Speaker Pelosi announced on Friday night.
In a tweet that encouraged all members of the House to vote "yes" on the bill, President Trump reassured those with Porter's concerns, "This bill will follow my direction for free Coronavirus tests, and paid sick leave for our impacted American workers."
Beyond free testing, Porter also addressed concerns about potential Coronavirus spread within California's expansive homeless community, the burden on low-income families who will need to deal with school closures, and the economic impact of a societal shutdown.
"The thing that is going to stabilize the economy is certainty... what we're doing is taking these aggressive steps to try to keep people safe, to try to slow the rate of transmission, to try to prevent deaths," Porter said. "By doing that, ultimately we're going to have a healthier workforce, we're going to have fewer people who fall ill, and we're going to get through this a lot quicker."
Things wrap up with our all-star panel. Elex is joined by Michael Knowles, host of "The Michael Knowles Show" and "The Verdict with Ted Cruz," attorney and radio host Ethan Bearman, and attorney Lisa Bloom, who is calling in via Zoom from her self-quarantine.
"I choose to follow doctors and scientists, not our government, because we know our government has repeatedly lied to us," Bloom said of her decision to self-quarantine. "The most civic-minded thing to do, even if you're healthy, is to stay home."
The panel addressed the ever-changing government response to the crisis. Knowles said the response has been fine, the President has taken it seriously, helping to limit the spread early on by blocking travel from China. Bearman disagreed, saying the President did not take the virus seriously for the first two months, botching the initial steps.
With all the focus on the Coronavirus crisis, it's easy to forget that there is a Presidential primary going on.
Now, with the primary in the rearview mirror, Bearman and Bloom agree that it's time for Sanders to step aside, leaving room for the party to officially coalesce around Vice President Biden.
"This is life and death, not only because of Coronavirus, but because of climate change," said Bloom, who voted for Sanders in 2016 but now considers him a spoiler.
Looking forward the group also discussed how society at large would be impacted by the ongoing crisis.
Bloom and Bearman were hopeful that Americans would adapt and thrive given the challenges that lie ahead, building a new, more intimate, form of community.
Knowles had a different take, saying that "this is going to change us by showing that Donald Trump is actually right about everything."
Knowles pointed to the President's agenda that has long called out the threat of globalization, the threat of America's reliance on the Chinese supply chain, and the threat of open borders.
"Let's just remember that President Trump is the one who looked at the eclipse," Bloom responded. "If you think this crisis is going to make him look good, you have not been paying attention to the things he's been saying."
