Nicole De Leon: Podcast Host and Fired up Soul Mamma

In a world where so many women have shed past notions of what being a mom looks like, who can listeners turn to for real talk on soulful motherhood? Through this weekly podcast, host, Nicole De Leon, a long-time surfer, teacher, yoga instructor, adventurer and now new mother, seeks to candidly talk about the realities of modern motherhood, especially as it affects the pursuit of one’s own interests while remaining a soulful parent. In this podcast, guest moms will share inspiring stories of how they persisted in living out their truest passions and purpose in spite of – and often as a result of – adversity and struggle. Nicole’s hope is that through this podcast mothers will be encouraged to believe in their dreams and prioritize joyful lives in order to teach their children to do the same.

What's it like to surf one of the scariest big waves on earth, and be the first woman to do it? When I think of women’s big wave surfing, I immediately think of Sarah Gerhardt-Northern California’s courageous Maverick’s surfer. When I was only a teenager, learning to surfer myself, Sarah was pushing the limit for women’s surfing at one of the scariest, coldest, most daunting waves on earth.

And not only has she dominated one of the biggest, most difficult waves to surf in the world, she is also a mama of two, and professor of Chemistry. This mama is both accomplished, on a physical and intellectual level, and uses her focus and analytical brain, to master all that she sets her sights on.

What I find the most interesting about Sarah, is that she studied Mavericks at length before actually dropping in on a wave herself. It’s fascinating to hear to progression of going from watching to actually partaking in one of the scariest things a human can do. Her husband, Mikey, one of the most accomplished male big wave surfers, is one of her greatest inspirations and she admits he’s her favorite surfer to watch out at Mavericks.

In 1998, she paddled out to watch from the channel, analyzing and watching every wave, and eventually paddled into a few herself. She admits that it is terrifying, but that knowing your surroundings, having good equipment and clocking in the hours studying the wave has helped to keep her feeling safer in this treacherous environment.

Sarah is not someone who had it easy growing up, she has experienced homelessness and poverty, and appreciates all that she has and has accomplished. Today we are going to talk about what she learned from her tough upbringing and how thats made her who she is today, how that has informed her parenting, how big wave surfing affected her parenting and what its like to face our biggest fears.

Take Aways:

  • Sarah’s life before surfing Mavericks, and what inspired her to surf the wave in the first place
  • Homelessness and struggle in Sarah’s childhood and how it led to who she is today
  • How Sarah homed in on Maverick’s and began training seriously to surf the wave
  • How Sarah and her friends trained with heavy rocks and big wave gear to get into shape for giant wave surfing
  • Sarah’s experience watching this terrifying wave from the channel, and analyzing every little detail of the wave and conditions.
  • Sarah’s first paddle out at Mavericks and how she got slapped around, scared and discouraged.
  • The next time she paddled out, she felt more confident, and how her mindset shifted.
  • How our mindset can get us to do things we never could’ve imagined in this life.
  • Channeling intensity into courageous pursuits
  • When Sarah met her husband Mickey and how he pushed her to appreciate this wave even more.
  • Sarah’s take on new motherhood versus now, and the challenges that accompany each stage.
  • Why Sarah opted out of big wave surfing last year during the COVID pandemic.

It's not that common to see moms who not only are dedicated wave riders, but who also charge big waves. Today’s guest mama of three and surfer Remi Nealon, had hugе big wаvе ambitions prior to having children and thought she couldn’t return to them when she had her kids.  Remi аssumеd she wоuld bе “trаding riding giаnts fоr thе gigаntic jоy оf rаising а humаn." But she soon realized thаt it wasn’t thе cаsе fоr wоmеn. Once she took off on her first solid wave at Waimea Bay, she was hooked, and she realized she COULD have both.

Not only is Remi a mom of three littles, she also raises them solo when her husband is often away for work. In addition, this mama charges some of the biggest, heaviest waves in Hawaii. Remi has such a positive headspace and mindset and that has really carried her through some of her biggest feats. She believes we can be anything we desire in this world and that connecting with her soul makes her a better mother.

Today she is going to go deeper into why mothers should live out their greatest passions even with kids in tow, how she worked her way up into riding giants, and how she juggles surf time and time with her kids.

Do you ever look back on new motherhood and realize you were really struggling and didn't even know it at the time? Many guests, along with myself, have shared about their experiences with postpartum anxiety, insomnia, depression or depletion. We often look back on it and realize we could've used help and support and often didn't reach out for help during those challenging times.

Today’s guest is Meli is a yogi, conscious living teacher, surfer, pro kiteboarder who experienced postpartum malaise and a feeling of not being "good enough." She also is someone who struggled with insomnia and exhaustion. This can be quite jarring for women who previously filled the day with many creative or athletic endeavors-it can shake our identities.

Today Meli is going to talk about her experience with new motherhood vs. now, how she maintains her own business out of Jupiter Florida and manages to kite surf amongst it all. Meli belives we have the power within to create our most abundant, meaningful and fulfilling lives, and attributes yoga, meditation, and mindfulness to this.

Meli uses conscious living practices (yoga, meditation, mindfulness and self reflection) as a framework to accomplish her goals, nourish her wellbeing and build up her confidence. She believes perseverance and the pursuit of what matters most to you is the key to "success."

What does "keeping it real" and authenticity have to do with success, or happiness? I believe it's everything. And so does today's guest mom Mona-Jane Hannemann.

Mona is an active, fit mama of two who loves working out and being outdoors. She also believes she doesn't fit into one motherhood box. Her social media following is large and successful, but it wasn't due to trying to change who she was. In fact, I believe, it can be attributed to her "real" down-to-earth nature, and humble approach to life.

Mona has seen her own mama friends struggle with doing the things they once loved after becoming mothers and promised herself she would try to incorporate her passions into her daily life as a mother.

Mona, is a self professed fitness nut, and her drive is inspiring others to live the lives they love and be their best physically in the process. Mona received a degree in Exercise Science, and lives on the North Shore of Hawaii, somewhere that really mirrors her outdoor lifestyle.

Today we talk about:

  • How stepping into new motherhood wasn't easy for Mona, but how she adjusted by taking her oldest son with her on all of her adventures.
  • How being an ocean mama can sometimes not seem very "conventional"
  • How we both admit to mom guilting ourselves over things like having dinner prepared nightly. Not every mom is the same!
  • Not fitting into one motherhood box, and why that is OKAY.
  • How to own our own authenticity.
  • Why being "real" is what people are gravitating towards on social media.
  • Mona-Jane shares about her humble beginnings and how much it taught her about gratitude and hard work.
  • How maintaining her successful social media accounts looks day to day as a mom of two
  • How sometimes we have to work in the middle of the night in order to get our passions realized.

Mom guilt. We've all grappled with it. But how do we get rid of it for good so we can be the most authentic version of ourselves for our kiddos?

Today’s guest is a mama of not one, not two, but six kids. Kristin Andrus is going to share about how her own mom taught her kids that taking time for herself was more than okay. Kristin's own kids know that mommy takes time for yoga, working out, or health pursuits, to name a few.

Even with such a big family, Kristin also manages to remain quite energetic and effervescent.

Kristin's You Tube channel has 250 free at home work out vidoes for moms who like short at home work outs.

Her faith drives her life and commitment to her family is at the core of everything she does. Community means a lot to Kristin, and she is going to share how important it is for moms to reach out to other moms around to share their authentic stories.

Today Kristin is going to share honestly about:

  • How to articulate that we need time to ourselves sometimes
  • Talking to our partners and being on the same "team"
  • How we can end up resenting our partners if we aren’t taking time for our own happiness.
  • New motherhood and how adjusting to our new roles isn't always easy
  • How all six of her kids have different needs and she has to parent them all differently
  • Her secret to "success" when working on entrepreneurial pursuits with her husband
  • How moms can sometimes feel like we aren't "enough" if we don't have a full time income
  • Why stay at home moms, at home moms, and working moms all have an important role
  • Why we need to celebrate being "enough" as mothers

One of the byproducts of the COVID pandemic is that divorce rates have gone up.

Often the things that are taboo are the hardest to talk about, but I feel it takes extreme times to speak up and be honest about our inner happiness and truth. Today’s guest Renee Bauer is an entrepreneur, author, peacemaker and blended family aficionado. …and is dedicated to helping you find your Happy Even After. She is also someone who speaks truthfully about uncomfortable topics and believes wholely that we deserve to live our most rewarding and fulfilling life experiences.

Renee is a mom of a four (including 3 step kids) who has won awards, faced her fear of public speaking, litigated cases in a courtroom, and grew a business from nothing but a folding table into a thriving family law firm in Connecticut.

She has been divorced (twice) and now is married to a man who is her partner in every sense of the word. …those bumps and bruises along the way led her to the happiest, most complete, most purposeful version of herself today. I believe that doing the big, scary, uncomfortable thing can be the most rewarding and fulfilling experience of your life.

Today we talk about:

  • How to get rid of shame or “less than-ness” in any facet of our lives whether it is our relationship, jobs or life choices.
  • Renee's story and how she went from litigator to entrepreneur/divorce specialist
  • Why big life changes like divorce don't have to be the end of our happiness
  • How we can truly start over
  • Why it's okay to go against the status quo and follow our truth
  • How to know when enough is enough
  • Why it's okay to leave a marriage if you are unhappy. Doesn't mean your partner is a "bad person."
  • Why Renee is a proponent of working on our marriages
  • Why she is a proponent of couples and individual therapy, but how to know when it is no longer working
  • How to approach divorce in an empathetic and loving way
  • Why mediation is a much preferred method to litigation
  • How to keep your family in tact after a divorce
  • Why being amicable during the process is important for the future of co-parenting and for your kids
  • Other benefits of mediation
  • How our kids pick up on their parent's being unhappy
  • Why two happy homes is better than one toxic one
  • Why Renee moved from litigator to entrepreneurship
  • How to live the life of our dreams and why we deserve it

Do you ever feel like you are at a loss when it comes to how to positively approach your child’s behavior? I myself have a very strong willed little girl, and often wonder if I am being a push over when I let her push my boundaries, but then don’t want to always be correcting or nagging her. Wendy Snyder, is a Godsend to mamas because of what she offers in terms of Redirecting Children's Behavior. Wendy believes in connection over correction and is going to share all about her Positive Parenting Approach with you mamas today.

This mama of two is a Positive Parenting educator, family life coach & advocate. She is certified in Redirecting Children's Behavior & The Joy of Parenting Program. Wendy founded her online business, Fresh Start Family, so that she could spread the message of positive parenting across the world. She is the developer of online positive parenting courses and also has a monthly membership program to further support families. I downloaded Wendy’s free guide and what I have already read through has helped me immensely!

My daughter is resistant to change, asks why a lot, is highly sensitive, and I can relate to all of the bullets on her list. She talks about how to nurture a child’s strong will through acknowledging their creativity, or natural leadership rather than criticisms. She talks about different approaches to strong willed kids and why having them is actually a blessing. She uses positive role models and successful people, that were once self professed challenging kids as examples.

Wendy assists families to parent with great purpose and intention by creating healthy, respectful & cooperative relationships.

Today we chat about:

  • How Wendy's experience with her own challenging child led her to become a positive parenting educator
  • Why our own upbringing can affect our parenting approaches immensely
  • How to shift the paradigm towards more positivity when it comes to speaking to our children
  • What constitutes a "challenging" or "strong willed child" and why it should be celebrated
  • How strong willed children are often quite creative and successful as adults
  • Wendy's advice on how to approach topics like sharing, temper tantrums, friendships, etc.
  • My own experience with my toddler and Wendy's tips for positive parenting shifts when I feel I am being too lenient
  • How to avoid being "too" lenient or too strict
  • Why being honest and humble with our kids when we our frustrated is better than hiding it or yelling
  • How to reframe simple sentences with our kids
  • Why phrases like "your being a bad friend" is not helpful for challenging kids. Switching the conversation and giving kids options for sharing, for instance, makes them feel less out of control
  • How Wendy got into the online parenting coaching business
  • Why business isn't always easy but persistence is key

Mom guilt. None of us mamas are immune to it. Many of us mamas in this community are independent, active, outdoorsy, adventure-seekers. Unfortunately this comes with societal and internal pressures which can lead to mom guilt and shame.

For example, today's guest Lindsey Lapointe would receive comments when she would go on her all women's trip once a year once she became a mother.

Today she talks about how it was difficult to return to being a freelance adventurer, especially after having her second child, and how the stigma for women is different for men once we become parents.

Topics also discussed include:

  • A return to teaching as a mother during a pandemic
  • How it is not always easy to deal with identity shifts that come along with becoming a parent.
  • How our lives change drastically when we become parents
  • The challenges of having two children under 5
  • How Lindsey was able to return to hiking and adventuring with one child, but how difficult it was with two
  • Gender roles and how society views moms and dads differently
  • Why her husband hasn't received criticism for traveling away from his kids, but she has.
  • The inequities sometimes faced by mommies
  • How her and her husband negotiate self care & their roles as mommy and daddy
  • Lindsey's newfound affinity for hiking in the snow

Is living the life of our dreams something that we actually believe is possible? I know I have used many excuses in the past of why that isn't really possible. But why do we tell ourselves limiting beliefs so often? Todays mama is someone who decided to trust herself as a mama enough to create real magic.

Meghan Schoneberger is a talented singer/songwriter, reiki master and friend who left her conventional job to pursue her real passions and help others. I admire her courage to leave something that wasn’t serving her and pursing the road less travelled.

Today she is going to share about

  • How to remove mom-guilt from your life
  • Facing the shadow side of ourselves
  • Feeling like we are spread to thin and changing that
  • How to let go of preconceived notions of what a mother “should be”
  • How to examine the hidden talents within, but don’t know how to honor them.
  • What Reiki really is
  • How she started experiencing spiritual guides
  • How her life is now more the life of her dreams than it has ever been before
  • Why we can pivot and change our lives at any moment
  • How courage to leap leads to great rewards

How can we connect with our innate creativity when we have so many responsibilities as mamas? Todays mama, Brittany L. Bergman, author and mama, is going to tell us why we shouldn't lose sight of our identities as women.

She is an author whose goal is to provide connection to moms who don't want to lose sight of their identities as women. A storyteller at heart, she invites women into her life and wants them to feel seen and known through her words. Brittany is a mom of two kids and has been married to her husband Dan for 7 years. She's the author of the book Expecting Wonder: The Transformative Experience of Becoming a Mother. By day, she is a copy editor of nonfiction books at a publishing house.

Pregnancy and motherhood are not simply about adding children to our families. Through the process of becoming mothers, we are fundamentally transformed into new people. Sometimes this can process can feel like loss or grief, but we also find so much joy and goodness when we embrace what this change has for us. My goal is to help women reflect on their own process of becoming mothers—not a one time event, but something that is still unfolding in them—recognize what they bring to the table/the unique mother they are, and trust that they are exactly the mother their kids need.

To Brittany, being a Soul Mamma means honoring her own desires, ambition, and gifts, and not stuffing them down just because she has small children. I want to set an example for my kids, especially her daughter, of a woman who goes after what she wants for the betterment of herself and her family. Brittany believes that when we honor our needs and desires, we are better moms. For me that meant choosing to write a book while pregnant with my second child. It was a dream that couldn’t wait, and while it was incredibly challenging, it was absolutely worth it.

Travel. Something that made up such a large component of my life pre-baby, is also something that can easily go by the wayside once we have little ones. Looking back on my life I feel that the most transformative moments were from traveling to different countries in the world, experiencing different cultures, and seeing first hand how the rest of the world lives.

Today’s guest, Robyn Robledo of Nomads with a Purpose, is a creative, mindful and courageous mama of five who chose to set off on nomadic adventures with her family of seven. At first it started off as a temporary thing, and eventually ended up being his they orchestrated their life.

Today she is going to talk about:

  • How she is raising mindful kids through adventure travel.
  • How travel for her family is about embracing challenge with our bodies while also using every experience as an opportunity to learn and grow.
  • How her and her kids learn to adapt, practice gratitude, and be fully present in their daily adventures.
  • Holding a space to help our children thrive
  • Realizing your children's greatest passions
  • How to give kids tools to live out their purpose
  • How to homeschool a variety of ages on the road
  • Creating mindful practices with your family to bond
  • Naysayers and why not everyone has been supportive of their nomadic lifestyle
  • Inner knowing and practices to help with self care
  • How the pandemic has affected their nomadic travel and how different states look very different right now.

Today I am talking to a friend/ local doula mommy Kim Summer about the current state of the world, going through a pandemic with little ones, being on call as a doula and empowering women during tough times. Kim is a mother, writer, birth doula, maternal health care advocate, and postpartum educator with a focus on postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. She supports families from all walks of life including Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.

Just as all of us are coming to terms with social isolation and major societal upheavals during this time, Kim is going to share about the effects this has had on birthing mothers, hospital visits and how many mamas are switching to at home births. Kim’s own mom and brother had their own battle with COVID 19 and came out on the other side. Kim wants to emphasize that there is a lot of hardship right now, but also a lot of healing and good that will come from this as well. All while acknowledging the full spectrum of emotions that come up during such an extreme time.

Kim is a mom of three who has gone through single motherhood and isn’t afraid to talk about mommy empowerment and sexuality. As a fellow Aries (like myself) I can resonate with with her passion, leadership and fire, as well as intensity of feelings which is why she feels so deeply about helping mamas and their pre and postpartum wellness. What I love about Kim is her willingness to open up about subjects that are sometimes taboo like extended breastfeeding, and maternal rights in healthcare.

  • What a doula’s roles are and why they are important to a pregnant and birthing mother
  • How Kim’s own experience as a young mother and caretaker of her siblings, informed her practice as a doula
  • Kim’s experience with two family members who came down with COVID 19
  • Mothering and doula-ing during a pandemic
  • The implications for birthing mothers during a pandemic
  • Why more moms are birthing at home right now
  • Kim’s experience with young motherhood and postpartum depression
  • Why we ALL need support pre and postnatally as moms
  • How to inform and educate ourselves about birth and postpartum mental health
  • Why we should speak up if we are experiencing postpartum depression, OCD or anxiety
  • Why our partners might not understand postnatal mental health concerns
  • Why Kim is passionate about helping mamas and why she believes we all need MORE support than we think

So how do we even begin trying to practice self care during a pandemic? Most of us have never experienced mandated social isolation and quarantine measures as we are seeing them now. The news is filled with stories of sickness and death and sadness and All of us are worried about the health and well being of our own families.

That being said, there is a lot to be thankful for and a lot to learn during such extreme and jarring times as this. With this forced "togetherness" we might be realizing that we can now focus on the things we were too busy for, or turn our attention to those things that truly matter.

There is a full spectrum of emotions experienced by mothers and fathers during a time like this, and I honor anything that is coming up for you now. I want to offer you some tactile tips to returning to a semblance of self care during this time.

Today I am going to talk about:

  • If you are feeling lost, how to turn your attention back on the things that light you up
  • NOT MOM GUILTING YOURSELF DURING THIS TIME
  • Getting clear on what lights you up and what depletes you
  • Finding 20 mins a day to do that thing that you were doing before that lit you up, or are wanting to do now. Doesn't matter what it is. But it has to be true to yourself
  • Write down what those things are on a sticky note, or in the notes of your phone and try to give yourself mental and physical attention to it once a day
  • If you are having a hard time focusing-that is NORMAL
  • If you are feeling like you are returning to "bad habits" to deal with stress-That is NORMAL
  • Remember, we are in a pandemic and many of us are worried about finances and health and livelihood. Whatever you are feeling is okay.
  • You may need to do "that thing" that lights you up like painting, playing the guitar, cooking, crafting, etc. while your kids are around and that's okay too.
  • Give yourself space and grace. These are new and unique times and uncharted territory
  • Personally I have challenges with being around my husband so much when we are both independent people. I share about things I've resorted to (like wine) to process stress as well, and what sustainable practices work better for me.

I love the idea behind new mama & entrepreneur Erin Motz's brand Bad Yogi. I have often thought of myself as a bad yogi also or didn't fit into one box.

Today this mama tells us why she wanted to make yoga accessible to everyone + a little more accepting to the world. Erin speaks candidly about the "internal tug of war" of wanting to spend time with your kids & contribute creatively to the world. She also speaks about mom guilt and how we can never win in our own minds and are often really hard on ourselves.

She also speaks honestly about PPD and the fog that has rolled in and out since having her son Theo.

So many of us soul mammas have experienced a traumatic 1st birth & because of that, we are now hesitant to have another child. Kelly De Chantal, mom of a toddler, is going to share her traumatic first birth experience, long labor/ emergency C section & I will be interweaving your responses as well. This prompted a discussion about disappointing births, post traumatic stress/anxiety & emotions that ensue following our births. Thank you to those of you who responded to the prompts for this on Instagram.

Take aways from today:

  • Why our birth experiences need to be talked about
  • How traumatic births are more common than we expect
  • Why it's hard to let go of control when it comes to how we planned our birth experience
  • How we need to let go of mom guilt and the fear of failure when our births don't go as planned
  • C sections and the stigma around them
  • How vaginal births can also be traumatic
  • Modern medicine; and why Kelly feels it's important she had access to it when things went awry
  • As an athlete it was hard for Kelly to endure a C section for mental and physical reasons.

I've been promising some one on one coaching episodes with you all, AND have been getting some good feedback onto what things are going on in your lives at the moment. So today I am sharing about the MAJOR hurdles that come up for mamas in our lives and how we can still discover our purpose nevertheless.

Some of these hurdles include:

  • Feeling lost in our identities
  • Letting go of things that used to define us
  • Having little time for ourselves or not knowing how to advocate for our free time
  • Having too many responsibilities so we crave vegging out at the end of the day instead of working on our purpose
  • Financial difficulties
  • Single parenthood or strained relationships
  • Children with disabilities
  • Sick family members
  • Feeling an extreme sense of overwhelm
  • Living in "survival mode"

Today I do my best to pose new ideas and answers to you mamas who are going through any of the above scenarios. In addition, I also am going to share honestly about my own experience with feeling totally turned upside-down as a new mom, the power struggles with my husband when I left my full time job to stay at home with my daughter, as well as our opposing natures and parenting styles, to name a few.

This goes hand in hand with my new course "Uncover your Purpose in Ten Steps" at www.soulmammas.com. The impetus and passion behind the course is so mamas who are going through any of the challenges above, can all have access to their truest creative purpose as well as helping them step in to their self worth. I thought total exhaustion in new motherhood was a normal occurrence. What I didn't realize was that feeling low energy through the day, everyday, & then not being able to sleep was actually due to postpartum depletion. This is a phenomenon I hadn't heard of until I interviewed today's guest mama Amy Kotch. Today this charging surfer & surf retreat owner, is going to share about her experience with postnatal depletion, her interest in orthomolecular nutrition, gentle parenting & living abroad with a child.

Today we share about:

  • Raising a child abroad
  • How Amy's views on surfing have changed now that she is a mama
  • Living on a resort island 9 months out of the year with a little one
  • Running a surf retreat in the tropics with her husband
  • Gentle parenting and how Amy approaches motherhood
  • Postpartum depletion-what it is, the significance, and when Amy realized she was suffering from it
  • Why feeling exhausted all day everyday may be from postpartum depletion
  • It takes more energy out of the body to produce milk than to beat our own hearts
  • Why women's bodies undergo stress after having a child
  • How Amy uses vitamins to remedy depletion
  • How Amy's life has changed since studying about vitamins and how they can replenish the body
  • Advice for mamas struggling with extreme fatigue, sleeplessness, stress, anxiety or illness

Most people know today’s ocean mama, Tristan Prettyman for her music, beauty, and authenticity. I personally remember her music from the surf flick Shelter over a decade ago. As a singer-songwriter out of San Diego California, Tristan was invited to join Jason Mraz, her former fiancé, on his Natural tour back in 2006. Tristan has received much notoriety for her music and albums, like her song Hello’s No. 2 position on the iTunes Digital Albums chart and headlining tours across the U.S., Europe, and Japan, but what people may not know about this mama is that she has done a lot of inner work to get her to where she is today and is very invested in health and wellness. She has used life hardships, one that was very public, to propel her to her highs. She also talks candidly about divorce, co-parenting and doing the inner work.

What would it take to radically re define ourselves as moms? Are we stuck in a rut, or wanting to pivot or add more creative passions into our lives? Are we in a situation that is not working but we stay because of fear? Today's guest & fitness instructor mom of six, Kayla Johnson-Neal, knows from experience what it was like to hit rock bottom and have to re-invent herself and believe in her own truth.

After a tough divorce & three kids by 31, Kayla had to pick herself up by her bootstraps and decide what direction she wanted her life to go. Fear or empowerment? Having always been ambitious about the fitness world, Kayla went on to branch out from a day job that turned into her very own business.

Now with thriving businesses, and married to the love of her life, Kayla believes passionately in how our lows can teach us the most and lead us to where we are meant to be. She also feels so called to help other mamas take care of themselves and empower their own goals and creativity.

Today we discuss:

Ughh. . .sleep depravation is the pits. It can exacerbate anxiety and cause all kinds of stress within a household. Is sleep something that has become a problem in your house? Do you have babies, toddlers or kids that you've deemed "just not good sleepers?" I certainly do.

I didn't get ANY sleep postpartum (for like 2 years for that matter). As a matter of fact, the nights where I finally did get 8 hours were so few and far between I was literally surprised by how good I felt the next day.

So what did I do? I consulted the sleep trainer on the show today, and thank goodness I did! Her name is Samantha Day and her advice changed my entire outlook on sleep! For instance, did you know that when babies or toddlers nap at the WRONG times or stay up even a tad too late, their bodies are filled with cortisol and makes for even more sleep resistance or disturbed sleep?

Samantha Day is a wife and fellow mom of 2 kiddos. She is also a children's behavior specialist, certified sleep expert, host of the Happy Days Rested Nights parenting podcast and author of two children's books that model healthy sleep habits. Her passion is connecting with families and guiding them to a rested and happy home in a way that fits their family.

Today she is going to share with us:

  • Why our kids aren't just "good" or "bad" sleepers
  • How we can vet our kids to sleep longer
  • Why almost all children require 11 to 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night
  • How napping at the wrong times, under or over sleeping can affect overnight sleep
  • Why schedules and routines are so important for little ones
  • Why nightlights are okay
  • How our bodies actually produce cortisol when overtired.
  • How she became an unexpected entrepreneur
  • Why to follow your passions

Stepping into the role of mother can be jarring to our sense of self identification. It is easy to start feeling lost when we are feeling exhausted, stretched thin, maxed out and drained. When I first became a mom two and a half years ago, I didn't realize how important taking to to myself and saying "YES" to help really was.

It wasn't until I experienced a "low" as a new and anxious mom, where I felt adrenal fatigue coming on, that I realized I had to make a shift. Once I decided to take the that leap and follow my creative passion, I started realizing who I really was again.

This episode is about:

  • How I got started coaching and what my major coaching principles are
  • How YOU can pivot and rediscover your purpose at ANY stage of motherhood
  • How to start becoming aware of the signs you are feeling lost or frazzled
  • My 3 main tips to starting to home in on your truth
  • What to watch out for
  • How this is accessible to mamas from all walks of life and all backgrounds.

While I was pregnant I felt supported and cared for, but to my surprise immediately after I had my daughter and left the hospital I found postpartum support for mamas was sparse at best.

I was shocked that I was only scheduled to see my OB one time postpartum and that is where the “support ended”. I was never urged to see a pelvic floor specialist, lactation support person or sleep trainer for instance, and all of this would have to be figured out on my own.

As new moms, breastfeeding is often WAY more difficult than we think, and without someone standing by to offer personalized support, a lot of mommies give up in fear that their babies aren’t getting enough milk. It happens more often than we’d like to admit in this society and today’s guest Lauren Archer is here to explain just why she feels every woman deserves and needs a postpartum doula.

Lauren is a spunky, passionate, and authentic mama who offers postpartum doula, childbirth and postpartum educator, and lactation support to all moms, all ways of life.

Today we talk about:

  • The value of postpartum support & what she offers as a postpartum doula
  • The importance of education for mamas specific to nursing, sleep training, adjusting to new schedules, etc.
  • Why we should speak or truths
  • How to empower ourselves through postpartum support and education
  • Why we don't have to fit into one motherhood box

Anxiety. Many of us have dealt with it in our lives at some point or another, but oftentimes it becomes more exacerbated postpartum. For me, profound worry, and insomnia consumed most of the first year of my daughters life. Postpartum anxiety is not easily diagnosed and not often spoken about, but so many mamas struggle with it.

Postpartum anxiety symptoms can include: extreme worry, irritation, anger, rage, OCD like behavior, control, insomnia, dissociative thinking, etc. It is something that many women feel shame around speaking about, or not supported with and it impacts their entire lives.

Todays guest Dr. Carly Crewe is the mother to twin 3 year old girls, a Canadian small town family doctor from Alberta Canada, an anxiety coach for moms. Carly is passionate about maternal mental health, starting in pregnancy and far beyond the postpartum period. She experienced her own struggles with severe postpartum mood disorder and now helps women all over the world through private coaching, group coaching and online courses.

Today we talk about:

My mom. My hero. The very person who taught me so much about myself, but also a woman that I saw burning the candle at both ends, being the YES person for everyone, and not taking care of herself.

Did you have a mom like this? Are you like this?

Let's face it, we can all relate to this. Because at one stage or another it was hard for us, as moms, to create boundaries. Some of us are better at it than others. For my mom, saying yes to everyone ALL of the time and essentially playing the role of mom and dad in my life took its toll on her health.

She suffered anxiety for as long as I knew her, as well as autoimmune diseases like Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue.

Because I adore my mom like no one else, other than my daughter, all I wanted to ever see was a happy, vital, thriving mommy. Part of the impetus for this show was living out our truest purpose as moms and not modeling pinched-off lives to our kids. Why did I choose this as a major theme of the show? Because of the way I was raised and how I saw my mom as I grew up.

Listen today to my mom and I discuss:

  • The paradigm shift as mothers; then vs. now
  • Getting married young (in her case) and inner knowing
  • Being a working mom and how she reluctantly returned to work and how it took it's toll on her mental wellbeing
  • What being "domesticated" means to her and why her and I are so different
  • Setting boundaries and why saying yes to everyone has taken its toll on her health
  • What I've learned from her about motherhood
  • Why I am so passionate about self care and how I am so different than my mom in this way.

Non resistance. How dos this relate to motherhood? Well, I can think of a million ways. One- letting go of control can actually lead us to more alignment than trying to micromanage every little detail of our lives. Two-softening is essential for conceiving and giving birth, and three-we can either accept what IS or resist it and suffer, those are our two choices.

For me, as a mom of a toddler and two stepsons, I have a hard time letting go of control. Sometimes I feel like control is the only way I know how to operate as a mother. But when I have been forced into situations where I had to rescind all control, I actually realized how many more things manifested into my life.

Today Lindsay Gonzalez of the Balancé Yoga Studio in El Salvador, is going to share about her experience with hypnobirthing her son 3 months ago, letting go of control, and retiring to the water as a new mama.

Today she shares about:

  • Hypnobirthing her son and letting go of resistance
  • Practicing non-resistance in our lives as a whole
  • The challenges of living/traveling in El Salvador with an infant
  • How communication is key in maintaining a positive relationship with her partner and business partner.

Sometimes it takes big, scary life shifts like loss, cancer, divorce, etc. to make changes that we really need to make in life. It also helps put what really matters in life into clear perspective immediately. Mom of three Shauna Mc Coy was faced with just that.

After a breast cancer diagnosis that led to a double mastectomy, Shauna decided to reevaluate all that was important to her, change her diet, her sleep and work habits, and face the world with entirely new eyes. She admits to burning the candle at both ends and never taking time for herself or her health. She also recognizes not listening to inklings or little warnings in her body that may have signaled something was off.

Today she is going to share about:

  • How she altered her diet completely and how she believes in the power of food as medicine
  • How her perspective on control as a mom changed since her cancer diagnosis and how she's learned to not "sweat the small stuff."
  • The role faith has played in her life and wellness

No matter how we look at it, we are all working mamas. At home mamas, working mamas, & work from home mamas. It is all WORK. Part of the impetus for this podcast was shedding light on all of this.. As a stay at home mom who also works from home, I have felt equal parts grateful & overwhelmed. Motherhood can be isolating, disillusioning, fulfilling, & exhausting.

Today I share:

  • My experience of moving from a full time job to full time mom
  • Intense postpartum anxiety
  • Stay at home motherhood challenges and successes
  • Why I don't believe motherhood should ever be divisive.
  • My podcast journey & following my dreams

Have you wanted to take off work to travel with your kids but felt riddled with exhaustion or busy-ness? Do you feel overwhelmed at the prospect? You’re not alone, but Anelise Salvo, today's guest and owner of Anelise Salvo Design Co., is going to remind us why it is totally possible. In fact, her and her family travelled the globe or 6 months together & are going to SE Asia this year! Anelise, is a mompreneur/graphic designer who speaks about the importance of taking a maternity leave, making time for self care & passionate living.

Today we discuss:

1.) Living an "on purpose" life, in her case a nomadic one, takes sacrifices and hashing out what's really important in life.

2.) Discussing her two maternity leaves and why she took 7 months off with her second baby.

3.) Why we need to take time for self care even if it's just in 15 minute intervals.

4.) To be gentle with ourselves and not judge ourselves or other parents.

Let’s face it, there is so much pressure on mamas to DO, BE, and FACILITATE everything. Getting back to our “real” job or accomplishing external goals often receives more accolades than staying at home and snuggling our babies. It takes a lot of internal moderation to make sure we stay aligned to our truth and pay attention to if our candle is about to burn out.

Today’s guest and creative entrepreneur mama who makes creative, beautiful and unique handmade leather bags, Emily Da Foe, knows just how challenging it is to always stay present as a mama and business owner. This is why her and her two mompreneur friends recently launched her platform Present Day Moms that offers a perspective from a "far from perfect mother" point of view, who is navigating the waters of running businesses and a home!

Today we discuss:

1.) How saying yes to too many things can lead to burn out

2.) How society often recognizes hard work as "external work" rather than staying at home with our kids & how this can lead to unneeded pressure as moms.

3.) Why staying creative is important for self fulfillment

4.) The ups ad downs of mompreneurship

Today’s guests and new mamas know about courage, the power of pivoting and how much we can learn from making BIG life shifts. Annabelle Torgman DeGrazio and Annie Jensen Chapur left their jobs as lawyers (something they had worked hard for, for a significant portion of their lives) and launched their own company called TAJA collection in 2017 out of a passion for thoughtful gifts, candles and creative design.

Their candles, diffusers, and vases, are all completely customizable keepsakes. are unique because they are completely customizable and work really well as thoughtful gifts. This means, you can engrave anything you can dream up on our products: a picture of your pet, your company’s logo, your dad’s signature, the lyrics to your favorite song, an inspirational quote—seriously anything!

Today they are going to share about:

  • How being entrepreneurs and now mompreneurs is not easy and takes grit,
  • How following their truth and what they were good at led them to alignment in life
  • The power of listening to your inner voice
  • How being mamas makes us realize no time should be wasted on things that aren't in alignment with our values
  • Why it's so important to surround ourselves with people who support us.

Enough-ness. Do you every feel enough as a mom? Do you ever take the time to pat yourself on the back and acknowledge what you've accomplished rather than what you have not? It's so easy to fill up everyone else cup before our own, or feel unworthy if we don't check off all of the "to dos" on our list. But what if we just accepted that we were already doing enough?

I’m super stoked for today’s guest. Why? Because she’s a fellow podcaster mama who candidly speaks about just this. Maria Alcoke is also is a Cross Fit Level 1 trainer who not only inspires with her physical prowess but her ability to shift gears at the drop of a hat.

Maria made the brave move to leave the corporate world to pursue her own business right before the birth of her first child. In fact, her show “The Engine Mom Podcast” is all about the gears we have to shift as busy, ambitious mamas.

Today we speak about:

  • Enough-ness and when and where to create boundaries
  • Making sacrifices for our dreams
  • Why she doesn't feel she fits into the stay at home mom or working mom box & how that is sometimes challenging.

Mamas most certainly can find themselves burning the candle at both ends and putting everyone else health, wellness and wellbeing in front of our own. Todays guest is going to share with us a great lesson in why we should always listen to our bodies inklings. Kayla Mangione, today's guest, was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease in her twenties, which resulted in major surgery. This mama of two daughters has walked quite a road to arrive where she is today as a LMFT and Art therapist as well as the founder of the *Family Food Project* on Instagram.

Today she shares about:

  • Why our body is much smarter than we often think it is and to listen to it!
  • Why it's important for mamas to have a creative outlet
  • How we never know where life is going to lead us, ad how our downs often lead to our biggest successes.

Because Kayla admits she is stubborn and didn’t want to accept being on pharmaceuticals for the rest of her life, she decided to completely change her diet, which included removing gluten completely. Now she has kept this autoimmune disease at bay, through diet and health alone and has become quite passionate about health and wellness and empowering other mamas to be versed in it as well.

Her Instagram food journal is where she shares plant-focused meal ideas, parenting tips for selective eaters, and how to create healthy food relationships for kids.

Are you a mom who often says yes or does everything for everyone else? It is quite common as moms, & creating boundaries isn't always easy. Today’s guests believe that we have to learn to say “no” in order to live our greatest “YES’s” because if we are spread to thin we won't be living "on purpose" lives.

Sonnet Simmons Matthews and Veronica Morales Frieling are friends, new mamas, & podcasts hosts. "Not Your Mothers Podcast" was created out of a passion to make mothers feel more connected/ less alone. They also believe that speaking our "unsaids" transparently can help us feel more connected and heard as a community of moms.

Episode Take-Aways:

1.) Accepting our new motherhood identities rather than trying to resist them.

2.) Why creating boundaries opens us up to the things that can actually help us thrive.

3.) Why there is no such thing as balance, and motherhood is a constant dance.

4.) Why we shouldn't try to fit ourselves into ONE BOX

5.) How living "on purpose" lives is totally attainable whether we are working outside of the house or staying home with our kids.

Moms, do you ever feel like you need to "juggle it all" but don't even really know what that means? Whether you are "working mom" or at home mom, or a mom-preneur, there is a stigma that moms have to "do it all." I believe this does us a disservice as moms. There are going to be some days that are harder than others, and some days we don't have it all figured out and that is OKAY.

Today's guest, former lawyer and co-founder of Vega Coffee, Noushin Ketabi is a mom of a certified coffee roaster and mom of a toddler. She's the first to admit being a mompreneur is not for the faint of heart & that there really is not such a thing as juggling "it all". Through her company Vega Coffee, she works hard to provide jobs for coffee farmers abroad, and knows the dance of trying to carve out little bits of time for herself in the meantime.

Episode Take Aways:

1.) Recognizing how much we've already accomplished as mamas instead of always striving for what's next.

2.) How to balance loving our work and giving our family enough presence.

3.) Why partnership communication is of the utmost importance.

4.) The challenges of traveling solo for work when your a mom.

How many of us mamas can attest to having very little time for meal prep, or for wanting to feed our kids wholesome meals, but then we get so busy they end up snacking all day? How can we feed our kids healthy meals in a creative and affordable way? Today’s guest Kristy Richardson of the successful online space for kids meal planning “On my Kids Plate” is here to tell us why a little tweak here and there can help kids get interested in food they were once turning away.

After her daughter went through a huge picky phase she decided she needed to create fun and inventive meals for her. Some examples include; smoothie popsicles and Dr. Suess Skewers (with bananas and strawberries), and green pancakes (with some secret spinach thrown in). "On my Kids Plate" started as a diary for her daughter’s meals and is now a platform that helps kids have fun with food and gets parents involved in the fun!

Kristy’s humor, honesty and accessibility is what drew me to her and why many thousands of others have followed her lead and are dedicated followers of her blog. Today she’s going to share with us:

  1. Easy Recipies for picky eaters
  2. Why to get started and be yourself if you have a new or creative idea or business you want to start
  3. How you can still incorporate "treats" into a healthy diet

Not everyone has a "traditional" family. Some of us are stepparents, in a longterm partnership with kids, have big age gaps between children, or have children with disabilities, for instance. More often than not we think we go through challenges alone, but if we share our unique stories we realize there are many mamas out there experiencing something similar to us. I was always really private about sharing my story of becoming a stepmom at 25 of two boys full time, one with a disability, but since I began the podcast I realized how important it is to be transparent with our stories. This is why I am sharing mine today. I believe this will resonate with moms from all walks of life; not just stepmoms.

Topics covered:

  • Step parenting teenagers
  • Having the "birth mom" not in the picture
  • Not getting married until 10 years into my relationship
  • Becoming a mom figure at a young age
  • Having a baby "later in life"
  • The dynamics of a new baby on a family with older children
