Statistically speaking, a large portion of sexual abuse happens by someone that the victim knows. So many parents believe that their children will tell them when something happens. As a child growing up in a close-knit family, I told no one when it happened to me. Which is why your vigilance is necessary at all times when your children are left alone with other adults.
Another grain of sand bubbled up yesterday. Another experience that I now see so differently than I did back then.
Episode number two describes a scenario whereby I was reading the news and suddenly remembered a trauma that my brain buried for far too long.
The time is now to shine a light on how common sexual abuse is and how it is that the memory protects itself from the truth.
