"Follow your passion"
Follow your passion
You ever heard that advice?
Yes?
Did it help? Hinder?
How do you feel about this idea?
In this episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast, we take a look at whether advice to "Follow your passions" is received in the positive way in which it is usually intended. This episode is inspired by a chat I recently had with a parent of a teen... a parent who said that as her child doesn't really have a sense of what they want to do in the future - the idea of following your passion feels more overwhelming than helpful.
This got me thinking...
I mean, I have had conversations about this topic in real life but it is the first time raising the topic on the Dive Into Your Career podcast.
When I was a teen, that advice was helpful for me, partly because I had a good sense of what I liked and didn't... and felt capable of leaning into my direction of interest (Spoiler alert: That career I was determined to do then is not the career I have now).
But what about the students who are good at everything academically?
Or ones that aren't currently self-reflective and aware of their interests
Or ones who don't know how interests can translate to jobs
Whether the phrase "Follow your passions" has positive or negative connotations for you in terms of your career development, this will be a useful episode - as it gives more context and technique around that notion.

This National Apprenticeship Week 2024 is based on the theme "Skills for Life" and what better time to go back to the basics about apprenticeships and whether they are a good choice for you.
National Apprenticeship Week is a week-long celebration that brings together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider economy.
So... this episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast, Gina Visram - career coach and consultant and host of this podcast explores "What is an apprenticeship and is it a good option for me?" For nearly 20 years, there has been talk of "Blue Monday" - the most depressing day of the year which is said to be the third Monday of the year. In 2024, that is Monday 15 January.
Now, you and I know that there is unlikely to be a scientific way to confirm this as the most depressing day. In fact, it was a travel company (albeit led by a psychologist) who first created a campaign about this - with the first Blue Monday being 2005. All of that said, I suspect that one of the reasons why the notion has lingered for nearly two decades is because it resonates. There is something that can feel 'heavy' about the shorter days, freezing weather, lack of Christmas lights now that the festive season is over, financial challenges after the festive season and more.
As such, in case you are feeling a touch blue at this time of the year - this episode of the Dive Into Your Career has one... just one but a powerful one tip for you to help. Create a high vibe (music) playlist.

At Your Career And Future, it's my mission to support students and graduates on their journey from education to employment (and entrepreneurship) in a spirit of fun and optimism, not fear and overwhelm.
That fear and overwhelm on the journey to employment can be a result of uncertainty, confusion, fear of 'failure', denial and and even just the lack of interest and engagement when it comes to career development.

Hello. Helloooooo?! Anybody there?! If you are a subscriber / regular listener to the podcast (and huge thank you if you are!) - you may have been knocking on my podcast door and asking this question. It has been over a month since I published my last episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast. Not great (says my inner critic) for someone who intends to publish one podcast episode per week.
But (she says, determined to turn lemons into lemonade) - what better time to talk about this week's topic: Finding joy in creating content and your personal brand.
When it comes to career development, I am a HUGE advocate of actively creating your personal brand and an integral part of that is publishing content online.
Think about it:
- Do you have a favourite beauty TikToker?
- Do you know which LinkedIn contacts talk about opportunities for international students? Or social mobility? Or diversity, equity and inclusion?
- Which instagrammers in your world create awesome travel on a budget content?
- When you are ready to pay attention to your finances, which podcasters or YouTubers do you turn to?
Content creators often carve out a niche of sorts - for which you can depend on them. I hope that the Dive Into Your Career podcast here is one of the places you turn to when you are focused on your career progression.
When you associate a certain person with a topic or specialism (or even personality trait - such as a content creator being funny) - that person is successfully building a personal brand. This is something that can make you positively stand out.
... and where else it is useful to positively stand out? Yup - that's right - when you are applying to jobs.
Be yourself - loudly! Whether you want to publish content about sports, marketing, social impact, entertainment (music / film) , travel or anything else - you are engaging with something which is of interest and potentially brings you joy.
So - whether you know you can regularly publish weekly or fortnightly or whether you are a bit adhoc (falling off the map like I did for a month) - get started. You can even warm up with LinkedIn (such an important platform) before potentially going down the road of a blog, podcast or YouTube channel.
As well as any awesome work experience and internships - you can highlight your uniqueness through sharing what you choose to be known for online - and let this be a jumping off point for building relationships and positioning yourself well for job opportunities.
If you are not yet convinced remember, you can revisit episode 077: What is PERSONAL BRANDING and can it improve my career prospects - but I do hope you are 'sold' on what we have been talking about today and are ready to create or revive the platform/s upon which you are creating content.
In the summer or autumn of 2023 I am likely to create an online community where I can support you with this. Message or email me (gina@yourcareerandfuture.com) if you think accountability and support will help you to make thi

"Whether you think you can or think you can't... you're right." This quote from Henry Ford is one of my favourites and is a brilliant embodiment of "mindset" - the focus of today's podcast episode.
In my experience of working with 3000+ students and graduates and indeed in my experience as a human being(!) - I have recognised the importance of mindset on the process towards achieving any goals we set for ourselves.
Paying attention to your attitude, your thinking - whether it is positive or negative - all of this has a massive impact on our experiences going through life and stretching ourselves in the direction of what we want to achieve... what we want to be / do / have.
Mindset.

Ever found it tricky to secure work experience? Difficult? Ooooh.... "impossible" you say? If it is feeling like you are not having any success finding work experience, this episode - "How to secure work experience when you have given up hope" is for you.
I'm Gina Visram - a career coach and consultant who wears multiple careers support 'hats' in varying settings. Head of Careers in a secondary school. Freelance Careers Consultant at a University. Careers content creator, workshop facilitator, coach and (soon to be digital product creator) at Your Career and Future (part of Limitless Coaching).
I have had over a decade of supporting students and graduates with their careers - including the oh so important element of work experience and this is truly one of my favourite topics to come back to again and again and again.
Why?
Well, because it is that important. Work experience (and indeed volunteering) truly has the potential to be a game changer on your early career trajectory. The earlier you engage with it the better (some schools offer work experience from Year 10) as before you know it, when you are applying for apprenticeships, part time jobs and graduate jobs - you may get stuck in that frustrating "need experience to get experience cycle".

Do you get in your own head about interviews? Tell yourself that you don't enjoy them? Or complain that it's a stupid process? You may even have told yourself "I'll never be good at interviews".
That thinking is unlikely to get you the job or opportunity you are seeking because as per one of those famous Henry Ford quotes "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't - you're right." Why ruin before your chances before you even start due to that sort of thinking?
In this episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast - we take a look at how to "Embrace the mindset for successful interviews." There are 5 very clear recommended thought processes here and implementing some of them could be an absolute game-changer for you when it comes to navigating through the recruitment process.
This episode is one of many "interview tips" episodes coming up in this season of the podcast so be sure to stay tuned for more (and don't forget to share the link to this episode with friends if you find it useful).

Students and graduates... Do you want your career to be a happy one? (If your situation is one in which you are working to be able to earn... That question ultimately equates to saying, "Do you want to be happy in your day to day life?!") Not sure I know anyone who would answer "no" to that question - yet jobs and careers can often slip into unsatisfying and mundane territory.
In this episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast, we explore how you can make your career an enjoyable one. A joyful one. Yes... seriously! In the week of recording this episode, I was writing content for the new Your Career And Future website. I thought about what some of the foundations of the career coaching and support I provide are and came up with 8 essential ones. While I suspect that may increase to 10 before the site is actually published - I knew that you would benefit hearing about how the existing 8 can have an incredibly positive impact on your career trajectory - so here they are.
Check out the podcast to learn more about how these values and notions can bring you career joy and excitement.

Should you keep your dreams and goals a secret?
Inspired by a TikTok I saw this week in which the creator was talking about "6 things you should always keep private" - a list upon which "your dreams and goals" was at the top - this week's episode of the Dive Into Your Career considers that perspective.
Should we be secretive about our dreams and goals?
Does the risk of being unsupported or mocked or dismissed mean it's better not to discuss these topics?
Will our dreams not come true or be jinxed even... if we talk about them?
In this episode, I explore one of the childhood beliefs and traditions that could be a foundation for these sorts of beliefs...
... and I share my opinion on this - which is that where possible (and I appreciate it isn't always possible), we should be shouting our dreams and goals from the rooftops! Well, sharing them anyway.

As such, it's no wonder that students ask me how they can stand out in their applications. This is the question that prompted today's episode.
Please embrace a positive mindset when it comes to this topic - as opposed to a pressured one. Any activities you do are brilliant for your own personal development and confidence... and it's a bonus that they also happen to be factors in how you present yourself in your applications.

Happy New Year!
Well, Happy New Year if you are listening in real time... and all the best if you are listening at another time of year - because, well, setting goals at any time of year can be a good thing.
Do you like the energy of New Years resolutions? Or does it feel icky / counterproductive or like you are setting yourself up to fail?
Do the statistics about the failure rate of New Years resolutions mean you are idealistically opposed to setting any?
Have you noticed how on social media this year, there seems to be a move away from them?
Here's what I recommend (lol - not that you asked, but I will share anyway)... don't shy away from deliberately setting goals - just call it what you want in the way that feels good for you. A "resolution", "goal", "intention" "promise" - can be such a great thing. In my experience, deliberately moving towards something you want to be / do / have is better than not setting any goals. Being intentional not only means that you are more likely to take the required action to achieve said goal but it also means that you are more in tune with conversations and some of the more surprising ways that what you want can come into view.
Why not speak it / write it down / set the intention... and then importantly take action towards it.
Real life conversations I have had and what I have seem online tells me that much of the resistance to resolutions or goals comes from the notion that we can be hard on ourselves if we don't achieve what we set out to do, however I'd suggest it's then a case of being kinder to ourselves and being less judgemental - as opposed to not setting them in the first place.
This is a loaded topic and I hope you'll agree that this episode is a great place to start.
There are many more episodes about goal setting on the Dive Into Your Career podcast already (just scroll!) and this January we will continue to explore this topic in varying ways. Have you subscribed? Make sure you do so you don't miss any episodes.

What is a digital footprint?
Do we all have one?
Can it impact my career (positively or negatively)?
Is it true that I can lose a job or opportunity due to my digital footprint
The answer to the last two questions is yes yes yes - anyone who uses the internet has a digital footprint. Wikipedia kindly highlights that:
"Digital footprint or digital shadow refers to one's unique set of traceable digital activities, actions, contributions and communications manifested on the Internet or digital devices. Digital footprints can be classified as either passive or active." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_footprint#Types_of_digital_footprints)
Recording this episode at this time is inspired by a viral TikTok video where a young woman shared that her job offer was revoked due to (from what I understand), what her prospective employers saw of her internet activity.
She is not the only one. There are so many tales like this. In fact, click here to read an article from 2017 about the "Harvard Facebook Scandal" in which10 students had their offers to attend Harvard University rescinded (they would have graduated as Class of 2021) due to their posting of inappropriate discriminatory and hateful memes.
Listen to this episode to find out more about what a digital footprint is - what are the different types of digital footprint - and what control do we have over these.
How can our digital footprint positively contribute to our career and life prospects (ahem... personal branding) or how can it negatively do so?
Also, how is what is currently unfolding with Harry and Meghan entirely relevant to this conversation.
Listen to this episode to find out more. I hope it blesses your career and helps with some of the decisions you make.

What is career success, really? The answer to this is a very personal one and it is with that spirit that I invite you explore 12 secrets of career success for students and graduates.
Your career goals are specific to you. Not your mum, your dad, your sibling, your cousin... you. No matter how well intended your supporters are, it's important to be building towards aspirations that resonate with you. What is exciting you about your future career prospects? Remember that at times when it seems everyone is running around, frantically applying for opportunities which you may not even want, you may start to feel inadequate, as if you should be in an intense period of applications as well.
This is a scenario that plays out every autumn term for example, when candidates applying for banking, finance and consulting spring weeks, internships and graduate schemes are deeply entrenched in their application season - yet students who aren't interested in those industries can feel pressured to be doing the same. Even though their career development at this time would look different.
I'm excited to share these 12 ingredients to your own career success - the secret sauce! I'd love to know what you think about these. What are you already doing and which one or two will you be working towards next?

What A-Levels should I choose?
Judging from the recent interactions I have has with many Year 11s (and indeed their parents and supporters), this is a topical question as late in the Autumn (and sometimes at the beginning of the Spring) term, these pupils are contemplating their post-16 plans.
There are so many things to consider and importantly, one of them is that A-Levels are not the only option so in this episode of the podcast, some of the following topics are addressed:
This and more is covered in this episode. For wider advice on choosing a sixth form or college, check out the "How to choose the best sixth form for you" episode here.
This episode does not go into the factors around grade requirements for subjects and what is included with each syllabus, but as is the case for this whole process - do communicate clearly with your subject teachers about whether they think you'd be a good candidate for their subject at A-Level AND engage with the institution you are applying to, so you are clear about their entry requirements.
(While requirements vary - in some institutions, you will need a 9, 8 or 7 at GCSE to move onto the subject at A-Level. Some may accept a 6. The educational establishment where you hope to do your A-Levels will have some clear information about this to share with you)
Any questions about this choosing A-Levels or any other post-16 option? Cheering you on!

When I spotted the 2-year anniversary video celebrating her social media agency on TikTok - I knew I wanted to (1) connect with her and (2) interview her for this podcast, so reached out excitedly. What particularly caught my eye was that within the celebration video about her business, there was also footage of her university graduation and I just knew that she'd have an interesting story to tell.
I wasn't wrong.
This entrepreneurial Law graduate in her early twenties has already had an interesting career trajectory and it is continuing to evolve as you would anticipate. Since recording this episode, she has delved even further into the influencer world with an offering around influencer management.
As a "Head of Careers", careers coach and careers consultant, I am tuned into a wide range of careers open to young people and recognise that any careers professionals who don't recognise the validity of influencing as a career are not supporting our clients as well as we could be. If you are aged 14-16 or are the supporter (parent, sibling, aunt or uncle, teacher, careers adviser) of someone who is - this episode is for you.
Within the British education system (whether you live in the U.K. or elsewhere), at the age of 16, students sit GCSE (or IGCSE) exams. This is the culmination of five years of secondary education and is the first experience of national exams for most pupils.
So what comes next?! Between the ages of 16 and 18 - students have a crucial runway between GCSEs and university, apprenticeships or other post-18 options and it can often feel like this choice could be 'make or break' when it comes to moving towards future prospects.
It's no wonder then that students and parents alike are often thoughtful and pro-active (and sometimes confused) when it comes to figuring out the best education choices at the post-16 stage.
In recent conversations - I have spoken to a few parents who feel like there isn't enough emphasis or guidance on choosing a sixth form (or indeed a college) - which has inspired today's episode "How to choose the best sixth form for you"
As ever, this isn't an exhaustive list but it includes 13 important considerations for you.
If this is useful for you and those in your community, do please be sure to share it. Let's build confidence for students and their supporters when it comes to making these crucial education decisions!

Volunteering can be one of the most powerful things you do in your early career development. Truly.
Earlier this year I was delighted to speak to David Coles, Volunteer Centre Manager at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) about all things volunteering - and I hope you'll immediately recognise what a 'win win' situation it can be.
First things first - a quick definition. According to the NCVO, "Volunteering is when someone spends unpaid time doing something to benefit others.
Helping your close friends or relatives isn't volunteering. But doing something to benefit the environment (and through that, other people) is.
Volunteering can be formal and organised by organisations, or informal within communities. It should always be a free choice made by the person giving up their time."

Trick or treat?!
That's easy... this episode is a definite treat for you... as it can powerfully support you on your early careers journey (even if said career journey scares you).
In this season of all things scary - this episode, "What scares you about the future" encourages you to name and acknowledge what you fear and / or are worried about when it comes to your future.
Within this episode I also refer to an article on CNBC, by futurist Scott Steinberg, which you can access here
Both REJECTION and FAILURE are mentioned in this episode as are some anecdotes, resources and wisdom which will help you approach your career with the fun and joy it deserves - even if you won't have immediate success all of the time.
Furthermore, it what may be a career podcast first (ha - who knows?!) at the end of the episode I share a careers poem (which I wrote on National Poetry Day) - to help re-centre you and head off with a skip in your step.

Recent conversations with some incredible young people early on their career journey reminded me how important CONFIDENCE is when it comes to career progression.
In fact, I recently did a workshop on "Career Clarity and Confidence" for a recruitment company and experiencing the engagement in the topic further reminded me how valuable it is to talk about this.
... Which leads as here - an episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast called "How can I become confident in my career".

Ready for some useful careers resources for black students (in or connected to the UK)? You're in the right place! This is an episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast - inspired by UK Black History Month.
I know I know - when you are black every day of the year, it sometimes makes you wonder why there is such a focus on Black History Month. I get it... and am here for constructive conversations like this but the fact remains that awareness days can be so powerful because even though there should be equity and meritocracy and all those good things - that is not the world we currently live in.
So, one of the contributions to UK Black History Month (which will exist way beyond) is this episode about useful careers resources for black (and mixed race including black) students and graduates.

Personal branding...
Is this a concept that you have come across or is it completely new to you?
Whether familiar or not - if you are someone who is on your career journey and will likely need to positively stand out in a competitive marketplace... this is a great time to lean (further) into the world of personal branding.
This episode of the Dive Into Your Career is an introduction to personal branding and highlights how understanding and implementing this concept can be beneficial for your career development.
I also share a few examples, off the top of my head of people whose in person and / or online presence includes a strong personal brand that they are likely to attract opportunities as well as be in a good position to be competitive in what they may seek.
When it comes to you... how do you stand out in a crowd in relation to your employment prospects or entrepreneurial endeavours?

2022 saw the return of national exams (externally marked), for the first time in the UK in 3 years, i.e. since the pandemic. Young people around the world have truly been resilient and getting back into their stride.
There is so much to celebrate, including a slew of excellent results which are a powerful springboard towards what's next.
That said, this year, as was the case in every year prior to the pandemic too - there are some students who did not achieve the grades they needed to access what they want to do next. That may be an apprenticeship or university.
Missing an offer for a specific university, course or both can be devastating so in this episode we look at 7 important steps on the journey from disappointing results to moving positively onto the next stage.
There are specifics, examples, anecdotes and much more in this episode.
If you are anyone you know is currently navigating disappointing exam results - do check out this episode. I hope it gives you some peace and helps with your plans moving forward.

Sometimes it is important to get back to basics... to ensure that the foundation is in place to be able to progressive effectively.
That is why - even as far into this podcast as it is (hello season 5!) - we are starting season 5 with a look at What is a career and can a career coach help me?
The definition of a career from the Career Development Institute is the one I like to share - your career is "the journey through life, learning and work". With this accurately, all encompassing definition in mind - the Dive Into Your Career podcast is here to support students, graduates and their supporters along the way.
In this episode there is further helpful exploration of what a career is and importantly, why you are missing a trick if you are not engaging with qualified support.
Whether you have just gotten your A-Level / IB / BTEC / T-Level results... or are on an apprenticeship or uni journey, early in your career - even in the middle of your career - this "what is a career" question can sometimes be enough to prompt some helpful reflection which will be beneficial for you on your journey.
... and think about it - who is supporting you with your career, this incredibly significant part of your life?

This episode is a reminder that visibility can be incredibly beneficial as you continue to move towards your varying career goals. It is your visibility and presence which can result in attracting opportunities, beyond strictly chasing them.
If you would like to stand out, in the best possible way as an applicant - I strongly recommend becoming a "career creator" - i.e. stepping into the power you have to create your career in accordance with a life that you love.

You're currently on your career journey (we all are... as career is all about your journey through work, learning and life). Has this journey ever felt lonely or stressful?
Ah - for you too? You're not alone.
Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK took place from 9-15 May 2022 in the UK and as is the case with most awareness weeks - it's brilliant that the issue at hand achieves huge focus on the week itself but it remains important that it is on the agenda all year around. This episode "Does your career journey feel like a stressful or lonely one" is inspired by this week.
So, how does mental health (wellness and illness) and career progression go hand in hand?
Ummm... how doesn't it?!
I am honoured to support students and new graduates on their journey from education to employment (and entrepreneurship) in a spirit of fun and optimism, not fear and overwhelm - and paying attention to your mental health is a really important part of that.
This episode touches on a few important topics which will make a huge and nearly immediate positive difference to how positive your journey can feel - those are:
1. Comparisonitis and
2. Community

Does this feel like a tricky balance for you right now? We know that taking purposeful steps towards your career development is a good thing... but what does or should that look like during exam season?
Before we even start down a road on this, let me emphasise that the most important thing is that your mental and physical health are in good shape. It is from this foundation that you are in a more solid position to make some well informed, self-reflective decisions about where are how to spend your time right now.
Whether you are working towards exams as part of your university degree, your A-Levels or equivalent, your GCSEs etc - there's a chance that this question has crossed your mind.
The main thing here is understanding that "balance" does not mean 50/50. Listen to the episode and I hope it helps you to work out what the best balance is for you during exam season.

GOAL SETTING at the beginning of a new year is one thing... reviewing and resetting goals is another. There's something about it that feels practical and nuanced among the big dreams and ambitions.
For some, the last quarter may have been a reminder that we cannot do all of the things all the time, so as we shift into a new season and a new quarter it is often beneficial to step back, reflect and reset (existing and new) goals.
This short (less than 12-minute) episode encourages you to do exactly that. Reset.
Remember, as always - physically write down goals (don't let them just ricochet in your head!). I'd love you to share one of them with me - whether obviously CAREER focused or more academic or lifestyle focused. Feel free to share via comments in any social media platform where we are connected or via e-mail... or via LinkedIn messages.

If you are an average student... average... say with what would be a C or C- in GCSE subjects like maths and English - should you be denied a university education?
I would say hellllll no... of course not - but it seems the UK Government has other ideas on this.
I am coming in hot, frustrated and soooo exhausted with Government initiatives which feel like they limit the potential of our young people. This episode is based on leaked and early reports in relation to the Augar Review of Post-18 Education and Funding.
When tuning into this episode it is important to know that:
1. I have not read the whole report or all of the recommendations forthcoming from the Government (they had not yet been released at the time of recording)
2. I am basing the information I have shared on a variety of normally dependable sources - including The Guardian and The BBC
3. I am open to having my opinion swayed and changed if the wider reading helps me understand the perspective being presented
4. After more than a decade of working in education (in the state, university and independent sector) and even prior to that with educational charities - I feel sufficiently informed to share this reaction to what has been reported on these topics so far.
I don't believe it should be down to governments to decide who is worthy to attend university and to decide what subjects lead to employability as the UK is a country in which all talents are needed from our STEM minds to our creative ones and everything in between.
So... listen along. Share in the rage presented... or disagree entirely. I am so ready and open to hear what you think. If you have found this episode from amy social media platforms do please comment below and we can get a conversation going.

CURIOSITY can lead to magic in your career. It's true. There's all kinds of evidence to suggest this is true.
In today's episode of the podcast, I primarily encourage you to be curious about your own wants and needs when it comes to careers. About your skills and interests. It is through this level of reflection that we keep on our toes with our careers and don't stagnate.

At the time of recording this episode, it is National Apprenticeship Week 2022 here in the UK, and it feels like a great time to remind you that traditional university is not the only post-18 route to take.
It is the route, I took (hello Warwick University!). I loved it and wouldn't change it for the world, however there were less options in my day (yes, I said "in my day"!) and while university remains an exciting option - I don't want you to think it's your only one.
So in this very quick episode I mention apprenticeships and let you know a little more about them. This is a topic I can certainly go into greater detail about in the future however today, I am encouraging you to have a look at the options that exist and see whether they appeal. So, check out websites like the National Apprenticeship Service and more and also look up the name of your favourite organisations and apprenticeships and see if they have any. Amazon, Google, the NHS - they all offer apprenticeships so enjoy your exploration.
Finally for now, an earlier episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast features Anna Morrison from Amazing Apprenticeships and Conor Cotton of Not Going to Uni and the hour long chat goes into some real depth. You can check out that episode here.

Ooooh, there is a lot we can learn from James Clear on the topic of goals, which has been the focus on the podcast this month.
James Clear is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, Atomic Habits, which has sold more than 5 million copies worldwide and has been translated into more than 50 languages. To be perfectly clear (see what I did there), he is not a guest on this episode, but perhaps that should be added to my goals list!
In this episode, there is still so much to learn from him however as I introduce 3 of his powerful ideas - ideas which can potentially yield fantastic results on your goal setting journey. If you are a student or new graduate, this will be some important food for thought and for anything that resonates, implementation (such as the goal competition piece- maybe you don't want to have too many goals you are striving towards while also coming to the end of a degree and applying for jobs!)
I'm excited for this to be a taster of his best-selling work in this space and if you'd like to find out more, this link is a great place to start - https://jamesclear.com/goal-setting

I think it's fair to say that I am excited to share on this topic. I mean I am hyped... just listen... that's an excitable Gina right there.
I know why I am bouncing off the walls with excitement in this episode though... it is because I think I have found the secret / cracked the code / made a breakthrough when it comes to what can be done to keep striving towards your goals. And to elevate them. Seriously, there are a number of things I could have said here but the example I am giving really is just one thing... which will so positively change your life for the better.
Want to know what that one thing is?
Good - check out the episode. It is just under half an hour long and definitely worth your time. Have a listen. Think about it. Reflect on examples you can resonate with. Implement (seriously, you will be able to do so immediately... you'll see). Then connect with me and tell me about it.

The theme of GOALS and GOAL SETTING continues in this second podcast episode of 2022. Why?! Well it's not because goal setting should only occur in the month of January (it is a year round, life long endeavour!) but the collective energy and hope of a new year means that you may be susceptible to thinking about what you can do differently or better (while simultaneously acknowledging how fabulous you are already!)
So what are some of your goals this year?
We have so many varied and wonderful goals and in this episode I talk about a popular goal setting method known as SMART.
I also talk about how powerful goal methodologies like SMART can not only increase you chances of achieving your ambitions but they can also have a positive impact on your mental health.
Listen... to find out more about why.
... and as ever remember to:
Let's talk about goals baby!
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a goal is an aim or a purpose. You know that though didn't you!
In this first episode of 2022 and of a new season of the Dive Into Your Career podcast I am enthusing about goals and goal setting and encouraging you set some for this year. I am aware that not everyone is into setting goals but I genuinely don't see how you can roll through life without doing so... even subconsciously... so why not do it with purpose... with intent?!
If you're listening to this episode there is a strong chance that you are a student, new graduate or the supporter of one and at this stage in your life there are some potentially unspoken goals such as getting the best grads you can and meeting deadlines for assignments - however on the journey from education to employment it becomes even more important to actively reflect on goals. Even before working out the "how" you need to establish what it is you are aiming to achieve / do / be / have / feel.
So, this is episode is a friendly kick in the behind, encouraging you to REFLECT and SET GOALS.
... and while goal setting and progression is important year round, this January on series 4 of the Dive Into Your Career podcast all of the episodes will relate to setting goals in one way or another so stick around and let the Dive Into Your Career podcast be one of the soundtracks on your journey.
You've got this! Proud of you...
... and as ever remember to:
How do you deal with job rejection?
How do you deal with job rejection for a position you were 'perfect' for?
Have you ever been rejected?
In this episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast, Gina Visram talks about reflecting on rejection and redirection.
Even though in the moment, "rejection" (i.e. having your application declined for a role you had applied for, potentially even one you are incredibly excited about and well suited to)... is tough - it is incredibly common. It can be hard on your soul and your spirit until you recognise... accept that it is an integral, unavoidable part of your journey.

How do I find a work experience placement?
How do I secure work experience in Year 10? Year 12?
How about work experience placements and internships at university?
Surveys around this topic typically show two thirds of employers "look for graduates with relevant work experience because it helps them prepare for work and develop general business awareness. "
In this episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast, Gina Visram discusses 10 ways you can find work experience.
This is not an exhaustive list of what you can do, but is a great place to start. Don't use the excuse that you can't do all therefore you are not making progress. .. start somewhere... and keep going from there.
The 10 ways include:
... and so much more.
This episode does not specifically refer to internships and placements for university students (that will be in a future episode - and there are some nuggets of information in previous episodes too) however many of the recommendations apply, so it's worth a listen.

The job market is competitive... sometimes tens, hundreds... even thousands of applicants for advertised roles. At the time of recording this episode, it is arguably a candidates market, with talk of #TheGreatResignation however it's always important to know how to ensure your application has impact. So, how do you make your application stand out?
In this episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast, Gina Visram shares 5 things you can do to make an impactful application. This is not an exhaustive list... nor do you need to do all of these if it feels overwhelming, but start somewhere. Don't let your application languish in a pile with minimal hope of being chosen to progress to the next stage.
The topic is reflects on one of the most frequently asked questions Gina is asked. Hope it is helpful for you today whether you are applying for work experience, spring weeks, internships, placement years , graduate roles or anything beyond.

How do I stop comparing myself with others?
Is comparison with others bringing you down? Making you feel sad? Insecure? Annoyed (at yourself and at their success - though of course you're likely to be happy for them too). But why? Why always them? Why not you?
Ooooh - the realness!
In this episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast, Gina Visram introduces you to a term she first learned from one of her online business mentors, Marie Forleo. "Comparisonitis" - the disease / infliction in which we negatively compare ourselves to others. This isn't a verbatim definition but if you'd like to have a look at Marie talking about it in relation to business - in a way where you can also apply the lessons to your own situation - check out the link below.
This feeling as human and relatable as it is, is mainly detrimental to your own progress.
So, what is the best way to live with comparisonitis in a way that it becomes a positive, not a negative in your life? Learn some techniques in this episode.
Gina talks about a new method that she has just created (seriously, it was for this episode!) - called the CHEER method. This stands for:
To find out more about what these words really mean in this context, you'll need to check out the episode.
All of these can help you to turn comparison into something powerful and even positive in your world. You can try all of these or try one - don't overwhelm yourself... but do something different, because the crappy feeling around comparison isn't serving you right now, is it?
If this episode has helped you - do please:
PS - Here is the link to a video that Marie created about comparisonitis. Remember, her content is targeted at entrepreneurs however this content applies for so many circumstances (including yours if you have read this far!)
This episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast is your reminder that even though you have just touched down at university and may not even have unpacked all of your bags as yet... the application cycle for some popular sectors is underway and you won't want to miss these opportunities.
Opportunities within the finance / banking / consulting sectors are open now (including spring weeks, internships and graduate jobs) with deadlines in October, November and December - and also with some rolling opportunities for which early application is advised.
Useful websites such as Target Jobs and Bright Network are also recommended as resources.
In addition, opportunities in a wide range of sectors are available via 10000 Black Interns (deadline is 7 November 2021)
This is a time sensitive episode so listen now (that said, if you are listening beyond the deadlines, sign up for the mailing list of organisations you are interested in, where applicable, so you keep an eye on opportunities for the future).

It's a new academic year... new energy... new possibilities... and a great time to talk about what you could be doing this academic year to positively move things forward in your career development. And that's exactly what this episode focuses on today: 8 ways to improve your career prospects this academic year.
Whether you are new to uni... end of high school... a new graduate - lots here is applicable to you. One thing to remember however is that this isn't designed to be a list to overwhelm you. It's meant to do the opposite, so it's not a case of doing all of the things at the same time (some are quite contradictory actually so that would be tricky!)
Take one or two of the action points and apply it.
We move.
Let's go.
... and as always, please do take a moment to share this episode if you like it. Screenshot and share on Insta tagging in @diveintoyourcareer and if you would like to get in touch, LinkedIn is one of the easiest ways to do so and I'd be happy to connect.
Have you ever considered when is the best time to focus on your career (it's development, prospects and possibilities)? Now... I'd say the answer is now ... and there's good reason for this.
"CAREER (according to the UK Career Development Institute) describes our journey through life, learning and work. We need actively to develop our careers to make the best of them. This process of career development takes skill as well as knowledge and the right attitude. Individuals need to work on career development skills throughout their lives."
With that definition, can you see why right now is a great time to focus on your career?
Topics covered in this episode include:
Whether you are entering sixth form, university, a year in industry, your first job after graduation or beyond - you'll recognise the importance of now when it comes to your career journey. Enjoy!
If you enjoy this episode, be sure to share it with your friends.
If you like it 5 stars worth (here's hoping!) - do take 2 minutes to leave a review - https://ratethispodcast.com/diveintoyourcareer
If you completed your GCSEs, A-Levels, IB, BTECs or your equivalent of these high school / secondary school exams - CONGRATS! You did it! In this crazy time of Covid which has turned so much of our world upside down - you completed these significant qualifications.
So what comes next for you?
(If you are a parent / key supporter of someone who did - this episode will be useful to you too).
In this episode, we talk about what comes next at 16+ and then (from about 11 mins) what comes after 18+.
Broadly speaking - those next steps are likely to include further full time study (at a sixth form, college, university etc.), an apprenticeship, a job and / or a gap year... but you will know that even though it's not a hugely long list of options - details are everything and you may be feeling a wide range of emotions and / or uncertain about the next step for you.
Listen to this episode and hopefully you will be poised to readily embrace what comes next.

In 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared 15 July as World Youth Skills Day, to celebrate the strategic importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship.
(Source: https://www.un.org/en/observances/world-youth-skills-day)
Inspired by World Youth Skills Day, in this episode of the podcast - Gina Visram encourages you to think about your skills (transferable and technical) and gives a few prompts which makes this an easy process. She also talks about a good question to ask yourself to help you establish a goal in terms of skills you would like to improve on (and no, this does not need to be every skill you lack!).
This year's World Youth Skills Day theme is around "Reimagining youth skills post pandemic" - an entirely worthy topic upon which to reflect and where relevant, act.
Don't forget - screenshot you listening to this podcast and tag @diveintoyourcareer on Instagram.
It's coming home... isn't it?! Admittedly inspired by the vibe surrounding the Euro2020 tournament (I know, right?!), this week's episode asks the question "Do you celebrate your wins" and (spoiler alert!) wholeheartedly inspires you to do so.
This episode does not consist of a "how to" or a step by step process but is an in the moment reflection of if we celebrate, how we celebrate and why it's important.
There are also some layers explored about celebrating privately and / or publicly, the importance of finding your squad and a renowned (British) characteristic which could be stealing your joy.
Enjoying this episode? (Whoop whoop!) - don't forget to share it and encourage more celebrations (whatever the outcome in the football!).

What are you intending to do after you finish school and / or what were the options you considered?
In the past few years, in the UK, there have been an increasing number of options about what young people can do after school... beyond the traditional full time university route.
In this conversation with Anna Morrison from Amazing Apprenticeships and Conor Cotton from Not Going to Uni - we are reminded about exciting alternatives to full time university.
Thinking about an apprenticeship? Degree apprenticeship? Gap year? Wondering if this is a good option for you?
... and if you are concerned about how your parents would feel about you taking an alternative route to the traditional university one - that topic is not only addressed in this episode but in summer 2021, Anna and Conor are launching a podcast called "The Parent Perspective" so look out for that too.

It's time. Time to talk about your CV. To create it. Review it. Improve it. It's time.
As much as recruitment processes have evolved in some sectors, it remains true that your CV is essential... whether you are applying for work experience, a placement year or a graduate job. Even when organisations use an application form, some of them will ask for an attached CV as part of it.
Taking it back to basics, Curriculum Vitae (CV) in Latin means course of life - and that is what you are sharing here, as relates to your professional background.
In this episode, you will hear about 10 ways to improve your CV / resume. Enjoy the episode and make a note of what areas feel particularly relevant to you. Then (importantly), take positive steps forward to make the tweaks that will elevate your CV and therefore your prospects.

Let's talk about apprenticeships!
This episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast focuses on apprenticeships in the UK. What is an apprenticeship? How do they work? Who is eligible? Is there a minimum and maximum age? What is better... a degree or apprenticeship? (Spoiler alert: One of the most exciting apprenticeship options combines the two!)
Apprenticeships are a job. Real world experience which involve 80% employment and 20% training. With opportunities in sectors from accountancy to nursing and digital media to sport - and the types of opportunities increasing (there is now a space engineering opportunity!), there has never been a better time to explore this as an option.
Amazon, Virgin Media, Google, BT, Sky, the NHS, Schroders, Mediacom and just some of the well-known companies who are recruiting apprentices and more organisations in additional job areas are getting involved (even though some sectors may be paused due to the pandemic, if you're listening to this in real time).
Enjoy this introduction to apprenticeships and look out for more content on this topic in the future.

Sometimes the seemingly basic questions are the points that are the most important to explore.
Today's episode looks at "How do I find a job?"
It is a question which some of the brightest students you could hope to come across ask, and as such a useful question and answer to share here.
How do I find a job? (How to find a job)

This one will raise a smile...
In this episode, Gina has a quick conversation with her 4-year old about goals and goal setting (Yup... seriously!). The lack of filter from kids is so refreshing and the honesty about the goals that come to mind is funny.
An impromptu discussion with a child this age about this topic is fascinating - and a great reminder that our goals can be as complicated and / or simple as we want them to be.

Where are my goal setting sceptics?! Don't look over your shoulder and the person behind you - lol - there's a very good chance that I am talking to you.
If you think that it is safer on your ego, heart and soul NOT to set goals because odds are you won't achieve them, I invite you to step out of your comfort zone and explore a different perspective. This is the episode for you if you can open up to another point of view.
In "Goal setting sceptics... I am talking to you", Gina Visram (an ever optimistic goal setter!) talks about how even in a climate where a lot feels like it's out of our control, there is still scope to actively get some goals if there are things you want to achieve.
Acknowledge what scepticism may look like, reflect on how your scepticism is serving and benefiting you (yes, really) and embrace the invitation to do something different.

Being in an odd position where it is hard to know what we can plan (when so much is out of our control!) - in this episode, Gina shares 6 universally relevant goals to consider committing to. This episode is inspired by a recent LinkedIn post in which someone told students to stop obsessing about internships, in what could potentially be described as a disparaging "oh, you're being so silly" type of why.
You can get a fuller breakdown of the context in the episode but it made this week's topic a no brainer. "Are Internships really that important?" So are they? Are they?

The first Student Spotlight from the Dive Into Your Career podcast features future doctor Isi The Medic. In Autumn 2020, Isi Ukponzene started on the "Graduate Entry" Medicine programme at Warwick University, a route she is proudly taking after what she describes as 4-failed attempts to become a medical student.
Sometimes, missing the grades for undergraduate medicine can be the end of that journey (even if it's just by one, as in Isi's case) , but this interview will make it clear that determination, intelligence, resilience and a clear sense of purpose means that there are alternative routes to a career as a doctor.
With details about her cultural background, academic journey, information about work experience - and an addition focused on the importance of diversity, inclusion and ultimately representation in medicine - this is not only an episode that should be listened to but one that should be shared.
... and when you have finished this episode, be sure to visit YouTube and Instagram where you can catch up with content which documents her journey through Medicine and some advice about applications, designed to help and inspire you and / or the future medic in your life.

As you've already clicked on a podcast episode entitled "Where can I find virtual work experience" - chances are you are already sold on how important work experience is. For a moment though, let's start at the beginning. In this episode we will look at:
Beyond this, you will discover which organisations are offering virtual work experience in areas including business and finance, technology, law, HR, engineering, health and social care and more.
What virtual work experience will you aim to secure?
Thanks to Emily Spaven, a News Editor at Linked In - it has been very easy to bring you some current (at the time of recording) and insightful information about which organisations in the UK are hiring more than 50 people right now. This list is far from exhaustive but it is comprehensive in that it gives examples of roles in sectors from Accounting to Broadcast Media and Defence and Space to Retail.
There is one sector in there which surprised me and if you do explore the organisations let me know why you think one particular organisation is bucking the trend in relation to similar organisations.
Furthermore - this podcast mentions further organisations (currently advertising on Guardian Jobs) - including a number that are recruiting for a small number of positions - but it all illustrates that while it may be hibernating in parts, the job market is not dead.
It is Black History Month in the UK at the time of releasing this episode.
I always think it would be brilliant to have a world which was so equitable that we wouldn't need varying affinity awareness days/months but alas, we are far, FAR from that as a reality and as such this feels like as good a time as any to touch on the important points of equality and equity.
In this episode the two terms are compared, the relevance of activism at this time is mentioned and some powerful explorations of what racism looks like in the work place are also considered. Definitions which show how even the most genuinely well-intentioned and kind hearted person can contribute racism by not recognising how powerful it can be within institutions.
Gina also mentions some organisations targeted at BAME students which would be good to check out.
You deserve to be here. Don't ever forget it.

There's a chance, a strong chance that no matter where in the world you are, your thoughts have included matters relating to Breonna Taylor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the last few days. In this episode, I share how the circumstances surrounding their lives and/or deaths can help to encourage us to do better, show up and make our communities and the world a better place.
Don't miss five powerful quotes from the late, great Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

September always feels like a new year. A time for new opportunities. Inspired by students returning to university, in this episode, Gina talks about 5 good habits for the new academic year.
This episode will be particularly of interest to parents who want to help their young person thrive in their education and make the right choices for their next steps. Nonetheless, it's a great listen for students themselves too. As parents continue to be huge influencers even when young people are 17 and 18, it makes sense to ensure that both student and parent are well informed about the university application process.
That's where Lucy Aditi comes in. Lucy is a tutor, coach and consultant with over 20 years’ experience supporting teenagers and their parents to get the best from the UK education system.
In this episode she gives a brief, clear introduction into UCAS (the university application system for those who want to go to university in the UK); talks about why overall family understanding is important; gives 4 top tips for what students should be considering when choosing a university; talks about the worst ways to begin a personal statement and so much more.
Lucy also shares a brilliant opportunity for parents who want to powerfully support their young people. She invites parents and/or guardians to a free 5 day challenge, starting 14 September 2020, which reveals how busy parents can help their children get into university by working together to make the best choices and complete a successful application.

The word "incredible" was used approx. two thousand times in this episode (only a slight exaggeration!) and that's because it is a 'from the heart' episode in which careers and life inspiration from the late, great Chadwick Boseman is discussed.
Perhaps best known for his role as King T'Challa in Marvel's Black Panther (and the Avengers series), the world was shocked upon hearing the news of the death of Chadwick Boseman on 28 August 2020.
This is not a eulogy or a series of facts - but this episode talks about some of the lessons Chadwick Boseman directly and indirectly shared which can be hugely inspirational when it comes to career development and life direction.
Please forgive any inaccuracies if they exist and know that the intention here is to motivate and inspire - something Chadwick Boseman achieved so beautifully in his life, cut far too short. Do feel free to connect on social media and share your inspiration too.
It's here! The new academic year is upon us (or around the corner) and in this truly bizarre year, it remains as important as ever to set some goals for the new academic year. Yes, even in a pandemic when lots can change (Never be afraid of shifting your goals when life circumstances change. It's still beneficial to have some to start with).
In this episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast, Gina Visram shares 5 key factors to consider and implement in setting goals for a new academic year.

In this season of global upheaval (courtesy of Covid), a group which has dealt with a significant amout of change and disappointment is the Class of 2020.
The term "Class of 2020" is used loosely in thinking about further and higher education at this time and more specifically in speaking to the graduating classes at A-Level (and equivalent) and at university level - where they are now progressing on to their next steps (post education).
