A bit of an unusual episode this week. This episode is actually a bit of a Nostalgia fueled discussion of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Both of us have been rewatching that show. Just prior to our discussion of the new Picard show, I turned on the mics a little early in the middle of a discussion we were having about an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation in which Q does something nice for Picard. It's an episode called tapestry, and Oatman was making the argument that it was out of character for Q. He was actually doing something nice which is not something he's known for, so we're going to start right smack-dab in the middle of that conversation and transition very neatly right into our discussion of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. This week we take on The Death of Stalin. Oatman and L.J. just can’t see eye to eye on this hilarious satirical send-up of tyrannical machinations and human rights violations. Sounds like quite a romp from the creator of HBO’s Veep and BBC’s The Thick of It.
We don’t go out of our way to spoil too much of the film; though we might sneak in a few story beats here and there. To be fair though, the title itself is a bit of a spoiler (especially for those of us who attended an American public school).
Whether you’ve seen the film or never plan to, this episode is well worth a listen.
Spielberg's Ready Player One portrays a dark future that celebrates the corporate owned intellectual property of the 80s, 90s, and today. The kids of the future will pay good money to admire their grandparent’s consumerist childhood entertainment, and Oatman & L.J. paid good money to said corporate interests for the privilege of watching those kids do just that. Sounds like an episode of Disrespectfully Agree to me.

We discuss Alex Garland’s latest film, Annihilation starring Natalie Portman. The critics love it. Garland’s previous film, Ex Machina, was a minor masterpiece. The stage is set for us to admire the hell out of this picture. Perhaps you can guess how this is gonna go. (WARNING: we spoil several moments from the film. If you plan to watch Annihilation, pause this episode and come back later. On the other hand, this episode is probably way more entertaining.)
