Balance leads to breakout. After three days of balance that started on Monday, Tuesday was an inside bar, Wednesday was another smaller inside bar that closed on the highs. The big gap was challenged during globex with the day session opening at 1963.25.
Volatility is the name of the game. All those months of compression certainly released explosive energy. The market opened today with inventory long, Globex looking below prior day down to 1850.50, found buyers and spend the rest of the night trending up to open at 1913.50. With the activity related to China, the range overnight has been more than triple an average day day session of 20 points before the sell-off started!
Dead Cat Bounce? The market opened today with inventory long from overnight so it came as no surprise that the first period immediately was sold to a low of 1922.00 before finding buyers. When the rally failed to exceed the opening price however, it succumbed once again and the sellers took control. A second attempt by buyers to hold a low at 1910.00 produced a short lived rally up to 1926.50..
To get a clear picture of this volatility think about Friday’s settlement price of 1970.25 versus Monday’s opening price, 1868.75. Then think about the day range of 119.75 points, but wait, then things get strange, Monday’s settle was also 1868.75! Not to mention globex open also is 1868.75
EXODUS! The day session continued the sell off that came after the release of the FOMC minutes on August 18th along with many markets across the globe. Most point to the weakness in China, oil still plunging and the devaluation of the Chinese currency as contributing factors. The day session ended higher, posted a higher VPOC with a higher Value Area on below average volume. This is also a new contract high. Both highs and lows show no excess. SPX did not make a new all-time high, it peaked at 2132.82; the all-time in SPX was made May 20 at 2134.72.

As of 06:30, the OVN market has once again rallied, Greece is getting some sort of deal that for now are appeasing the market, however, the Greek crisis is far from over. The OVN inventory is net long again today and trading at the top of its range, the OVN high is at 2087.50, the low at 2052.00, currently trading at or near 2083.75
The day session was dominated by sellers and once again a test of the recent lows was made at the 34-36 level and held. The Value Area was contained within the previous day’s Value, the VPOC was lower finishing the day at 2039.25. The bottom was again IMO a healthy test..
The day session had a roller coaster ride with a whopping 41.25 handle range, not bad at all for summer trading. The probe lower to 2035.00 is actually healthy IMO, clearing the way for a rally into the three month old trading range. When the market was unable to take out the Globex Sunday night low, it took off on a rampage to end the day with an engulfing pattern, a buying tail, and a close near the top of the trading range. Still the VPOC ended lower at 2043.50 but the value area was overlapping lower and higher. All this was supposedly due to the Greeks returning to the negotiating table and possibly getting an extension till the end of July to resolve their issues with the IMF.
