The mark of the kingdom is ones life who is not governed by self-preservation but rather self-sacrifice.
The essence of swearing is invoking the name of God to make your words seem more significant. It is design to override the input of others by making your own words seem more important so that you get what you want. It’s manipulation. And Jesus said it is evil.
The reality is that devoice in someway has impacted each and every one of us.
Just like in anger and lust, Jesus does not mince his words about divorce. His goal is to bring the Kingdom of Heaven to earth. “From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force” Matthew 11:12
A new covenant- a covenant that changes the heart.
Fulfilling the Torah- is not simple obeying the law but letting Jesus do this renovation of the heart.
What he is calling his disciples to do is live by a heart change.
Who do you see? Someone who came from poor insignificant circumstances, who mourned and grieved over the sate of this world, someone who was extremely important but did not think of himself as important, and he longed to see God’s world set right so with acts of mercy to hurting people he showed his pure devotion to the cause of the Kingdom and he inserted himself into dangerous situations between people who hated each other and got persecuted and even killed for it.
What does it mean to live under the reign of King Jesus? The kingdom of God is the event about God reclaiming the world through Jesus and forming a people who are going to live under the reign of God.
