In Deuteronomy 14:1-21 we have a section about clean and unclean food. Remember that in the Old Testament we have civil laws and religious laws. These laws about food are probably more civil. God was calling a people to be set apart. In verses 22-29 Moses writes about tithes.
In John 11 we have the really awesome account of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Here we see that He has authority over death. In verses 1-16 we see Lazarus’ death. In verses 17-27 we see that Jesus is the resurrection and the life. In verses 28-37 we see Jesus’ emotions as He weeps. In verses 38-44 Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. In verses 45-57 we see the plot to kill Jesus.
In Deuteronomy 13 we have a chapter about threats of idolatry. Remember that Moses is calling a people to be separated from the world.
In John 10 Jesus continues to teach the people. Remember that John’s Gospel is different than Matthew, Mark, and Luke. John wrote much later than the other three Gospels and he focuses differently. He gives a different perspective. In verses 1-21 Jesus teaches about being the good shepherd. In verses 22-42 He teaches Theology and teaches that He and the Father are one (see verse 30).
In Deuteronomy 12 it seems that Moses begins his second or third speech, depending how we outline the book. The ESV Study Bible calls this the second speech and says it runs from Deuteronomy 12:1-26:19. Remember that Deuteronomy is a series of sermons, or speeches, which Moses delivers to the people before they enter the promised land. Deuteronomy 12 is about proper worship and the end of the chapter is a warning against idolatry.
In John 9 Jesus heals a man born blind. In the whole chapter we find discussion about this healing and the witness of the man. It is a somewhat humorous passage.
In Deuteronomy 11 we have a chapter encouraging them to love the Lord and serve Him with their whole heart.
In John 8 we have the woman caught in the act of adultery in verses 1-11. In verses 12-30 Jesus is teaching about being the Light of the world. In verses 31-38 Jesus teaches that the truth will set you free. In verses 39-59 there is more controversy over who Jesus is.
In Deuteronomy 10 Moses is still recounting the past, including how they got to the place they are at. In verses 1-11 Moses recounts how they received new tablets of stone. In verses 12-22 they are exhorted to circumcise their heart.
In John 7 Jesus is teaching at the Feast of Booths, also called the Feast of Tabernacles. In verses 25-31 the people were questioning if this could be the Christ. In verses 32-36 we see people trying to arrest Jesus. In verses 37-39 Jesus teaches about Living water. In verses 40-52 there is controversy within the people.
In John 6 we have Jesus feeding the 5000. In verses 16-21 Jesus walks on water. In verses 22-71 Jesus teaches that He is the bread of life.
In Deuteronomy 8, the whole chapter, it is all about God’s gracious dealings with Israel.
In John 5:1-17 we have the healing at Bethesda. Then in verses 18-29 we have the authority of the Son. In verses 30-47 we have the witnesses to Jesus.
In Deuteronomy 7 we have warnings about not falling away They have an exclusive relationship with the Lord. Beginning in verse 12 we also have a section on the promises of God.
In John 4 we have the account of Jesus talking with the Samaritan woman at the well. Again, we have teaching on Jesus’ purpose and the love of God. Here Jesus goes to a woman who would be considered an outcast from society. This woman at the well had been married 5 times and now was with a man she was not married to. Jesus cared about her. Then, in verses 46-54 Jesus heals an official’s son.
In Deuteronomy 6 we have a strong passage exhorting the people to obey God and prosper. They are also exhorted to teach their children the Word of God.
In John 3:1-21 we have Nicodemus, who came to Jesus at night. This is a wonderful passage in which we find awesome teaching on the love of God and Jesus’ purpose in life. In verses 22-36 we see John the baptizer exalt Christ.
In Deuteronomy 5:1-21 the Ten Commandments are repeated. In verses 22-33 Moses intercedes for the people. Deuteronomy 5 begins Moses’ second speech. Remember that Deuteronomy is a series of sermons which Moses gives to the people before entering the promised land.
In John 2 we have the wedding at Cana, which is Jesus’ first miracle. Then, in verses 13-22 Jesus cleanses the temple. In verses 23-25 we see that Jesus knows what is in humans, meaning he knows our hearts.
In Deuteronomy 4 Israel is urged to obey God’s Law. Starting in verse 14 and going through 31 idolatry is forbidden. In verses 32-40 there are teachings that the Lord alone is God. In verses 41-43 we have a section on the cities of refuge. In verses 44-49 we have an introduction to the law.
In John 1 we have John’s introduction to the Gospel which he wrote. Notice how he begins going all the way back to creation showing how Jesus holds all creation together. In verses 14-18 we have the writing of Jesus becoming a man. In verses 19-34 we have writing about John the baptizer. In verses 35-51 we have Jesus’ public ministry and first converts.
In Deuteronomy 3 Moses reviews the conquests of certain cities. This goes back to the book of Numbers. The ESV Study Bible shares that this section recounts Israel’s second transjordan victory (see Numbers 21:31-35).
In Luke 24 we have Luke’s account of the resurrection. Beginning in verse 13 and going through verse 35 we have Jesus’ talk with the disciples on the road to Emmaus. In verses 36-49 we see Jesus’ other appearances. In verses 50-53 we have the ascension.
In Deuteronomy 2 Moses continues to review their wanderings in the wilderness. Notice that in verse 14 Moses says that they had been wandering 38 years.
In Luke 23 Jesus is tried and crucified. He is before Pilate (verses 1-5), then Herod (verses 6-12), then Pilate again (verses 13-17). Pilate orders Him crucified in verses 18-25. Jesus is crucified in verses 26-43. Jesus dies in verses 44-49. Jesus is buried in verses 50-56.
In Deuteronomy 1:1-5 we have a prologue to Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy is a series of sermons which Moses delivers to the people prior to their entrance to the promised land. In verses 6-46 we have the command to leave Horeb (Mt. Sinai) and a recounting of the events of the past.
In Luke 22 we have many of the events leading to Jesus arrest and by the end of the chapter Jesus has been arrested. This chapter includes Judas betraying Jesus (verses 3-6), the Passover meal (verses 7-23), Jesus’ prayer at Gethsemane (verses 39-46), and much more.
