Before today's high-tech era, discotheques in North America and Europe just spun tunes on dual turntables. Mixers were rare if at all – it was simply transitioning from phono 1 to phono 2. This collection is for the polyester, afros, high-heeled wedges, and the love of dancing under the lights. For Toronto, it was clubs like Floating World, Space, Checkers, and Coleman’s just to name a few.

BMS 10th Year Anniversary!
During this segment of BMS you will hear a selection of tracks from the Canadian Urban Music scene released over the years. Some of these recordings were from major label signings while others were released and promoted independently. Canada like many countries has a vibrant music scene but, to make it in the “music business” (10% Music/90% Business) has always been a struggle for most. Persistence, talent, timing, and plain old fashion luck have always seemed to be the key factors to success.
This is just a tiny slice of the struggle over the past couple of decades. From hip hop to reggae, these are artists that I have either personally worked with, crossed paths with, or admired from afar. Many (too much to mention) have come before them to pave a path to breaking rhythm-based music into the mainstream. I would like to thank all the musicians, writers, promoters, mom & pop retailers, and the independent media that all played a part in trying to get to the next level.

The last few years have been upside down and sideways for many of us with seemingly no end in sight.
We are living in a constant state of emergency and something just seems different; and not in a good way compared to past world events.

Pierre Elliot Trudeau and Ronald Reagan ruled our borders, Steven Spielberg dominated the big screen, and Dallas and Dynasty dominated television. In sports, the Magic Johnson and Larry Bird rivalry was heating up the courts, and I sported a jheri curl to the clubs. For me, it was all about the music, the parties, and the dance halls.
