Find out about Garden of Youth, an innovative garden program to help plant seeds of opportunities for students with obstacles to employment. GARDEN OF YOUTH INTERNSHIP
Garden of Youth provides students with special needs soft job skills through 10-week paid summer internships. Eight sites host interns across Denver where students plant, maintain and harvest produce to share at local farmers markets while practicing merchandising, sale skills, and money math. Each week interns explore one garden or sustainability topic while honing their job skills working in small groups with a job coach. Garden of Youth is in its tenth year and still growing strong.

3rd Annual Earth Week Summit: Apr 17-24, 2021 2021 Annual International Climate Action Challenge: Aug 18, 2021
Schools use a lot of paper. That's what got two high-school seniors, Sethu Odayappan and Lizzy Elsner, thinking.
They decided to take action to help replace the paper that they and their fellow classmates had used during their senior year at Mansfield, Massachusetts. That was the start of Tree-Plenish, with its first tree-planting event. The team has grown from 2 to 25 and turned a small-town project into a national one.
The Tree-Plenish team is working with 90 schools in the 2020-2021 academic year and is on track to plant over 14,000 trees across the country. The team is working with schools across 20 states from California to New Hampshire.
Tree-Plenish works with high school students to host tree-planting events in their communities that will offset their school’s paper usage during the last academic year. Students, guided by Tree-Plenish mentors, follow a 3-step process.
1) Planning - During this phase of the process, students figure out how much paper their school used during the last academic year. They then take that number and convert it into the number of trees they will need to plant. We estimate planting one tree will offset 10,000 sheets of paper.
2) Marketing - During the next phase, students reach out to the residents of their community to ask them to request a tree to be planted in their yard or to volunteer to help plant trees on the day of the actual event, or both!
3) Hosting - The final phase is for students to host their actual event. On this day, teams of volunteers plant trees in the yards of residents of their town.
Tree-Plenish has developed guidelines for planting during the coronavirus pandemic to keep everyone safe.

In this interview, we'll explore what permaculture is and discuss their upcoming Permaculture Design courses.
Denver Permaculture Guild (DPG) is a community-organized, membership-based nonprofit with the aim of building healthy, resilient, regenerative, and inclusive Denver area communities.
DPG is offering a Permaculture Design Course from April through October 2021, with a mix of remote and in-person workshops. The course includes the core 72-hour internationally certified curriculum as well as detailed breakout sessions and regionally appropriate resources.
DPG is also offering a hands-on, intensive outdoor course starting in late July. Additional 2021 course offerings include Social Permaculture, Advanced Landscape Design using Permaculture, Financial Permaculture, Decolonizing, and Indigenous Phenology.

The pandemic and economic implosion have exposed and amplified the pre-existing flaws in our food system. Hunger, access to nutritious food, and the means of food production are more important now than ever. Tune in for my interview with Benu AmunRa, a food justice advocate in Colorado.
Benu is working on her masters degree at Naropa University, centered on Resilient Leadership with an emphasis on Sustainable Systems. She is pursuing a doctorate in Transformative Studies in Fall 2021.

Desperation is never a good look.
You've probably had this experience many times. When you act needy, the exact thing that you've decided that you need so desperately continues to elude you.
Maybe we're all like those buds just below the surface, just so excited to pop! But unlike the buds who aren't rushing or feeling inadequate, it seems like there's a lot of anxiety right now about not having or not doing enough.
This is something that I work to manage in my own life every day.
In this week's Green Team Academy Podcast Live, I'll share my thoughts on how to:

- Discern the levels of having, doing, and being
- Consider the multiple forms of currency available in your life and your work

Tony C. Saladino is a Charmaster, Biochar Educator, Founder and Guide for ECO-Tours of Wisconsin, Inc. As a participant in the 2020 International Climate Challenge, he met his goal of creating his weight in char and turning that into over half a ton of biochar, enough to enrich a dozen 4X10 foot beds to a depth of six inches, forever! He also taught a dozen more biochar classes so that more people would be able to do the same, cheaply and efficiently.

In 1987, Saladino rode his bicycle around all five Great Lakes, teaching people in person, through TV, radio and print publications how to live lightly on the planet and experience a higher quality of life at the same time. Over ten million residents of the Great Lakes Basin heard him speak or read about his trip.
Tony committed his life to "helping heal the rift between humankind and nature" as a child and has helped plant over 60,000 native trees and hundreds of thousands of native perennial food and medicinal plants across Northeast Wisconsin as an adult. He leads plant-ins, seed collection and dispersal tours, biochar classes, permaculture garden tours, canoe and bicycle trips across the region. He also advocates for the Earth Charter, www.earthcharter.org, which encourages people to utilize information from Environmental Working Group, www.ewg.org especially their Skin-Deep database of personal care products and their zip code specific water quality database.
The focus on the six steps required to make biochar will help people understand how-to double crop production, sequester carbon, protect water quality, reduce the need for irrigation and fertilization by half, all while providing a host of environmental benefits. He will help people decide if they are better served by making their own biochar or purchasing it and for those who decide to buy, how to tell if the char you are buying is worth the investment.
Six steps required to transform dry woody material into biochar:
- Make it by getting it to glow, without air
- Micronize it to bits 2mm or less.
- Moisten that material to as wet as a wrung-out sponge.
- Add Minerals
- Add Microbes
- Let it mature, stirring several times a day and keeping the moisture steady.
Saladino and his group, are currently working to secure funding for an 80-acre parcel that will not only serve as a home base for ECO-Tours but allow guests to come and learn the principles of sustainability by doing. In a living laboratory, that builds community through diversity. The property will only be available for Leave No Trace Camping and classes in and about nature which helps guests understand and create more sustainable lifestyles.

Renee Millard-Chacon is a writer, educator, Danzante Azteca, Xicana activist, and most importantly the mother of two sons. She is an indigenous womxn of Diné/Mexica descent, fighting for future generations and committed to relating climate justice to social justice. Her family is from the Denver community and she now works as a cultural educator and teacher. She works as the Youth Program Coordinator/ Cultural Educator at Spirit of the Sun and Co-founder of Womxn From the Mountain in hosting, organizing, and leading marches, workshops, and educational resources for social justice and environmental justice. She maintains her culture every day as a Sahumadora/Malinzin in Azteca Danza for Grupo ColorAztlan in Denver and Tlahuitzcalli in Boulder. Her goal now is to help in the circles she has the opportunity to engage in to move forward to heal through environmental awareness, transformative education, and support to diverse leaders ready to fight for future generations. She welcomes any respectful correspondence to start doing the tedious but powerful work of creating better relations in spaces that deserve to be healed because of the trauma from historical inequality and environmental racism.

Renee is working in Colorado to define environmental justice for legislation.
Renee worked with 350 Colorado, Conservation Colorado, Western Conservation, and many environmental organizations to address how womxn and children are often trafficked in these same areas affected by exploitative practices, such as fossil fuel development. In a collective effort with the International Indigenous Youth Council, they presented an art installation on 16th Street Mall in Denver to highlight Missing and Murdered Indigenous Womxn, Black Womxn, and Migrant Womxn by hanging red and black dresses individually dedicated to a womxn missing or deceased. During the strike with Greta Thunberg, they painted handprints over the mouths of hundreds of individuals to continue to bring attention to these silenced individuals.

Shaina Oliver, a tribal member of the Navajo Nation from Shiprock, New Mexico, is an advocate for Indigenous Peoples’ Rights. In 2015, after the EPA’s toxic mine spill affecting the Animas and San Juan Rivers, which supply water to the Navajo Nation, Shaina became more aware that the environmental disasters that happen in Colorado—where she now lives with her husband and four boys—also impact her tribe’s well-being and future. Shaina began to feel her responsibility to do her part as a mother, aunt, sister, descendant, and survivor of genocide. Living in northeast Denver, Shaina is just south of the Suncor refinery. Sometimes she and her family can’t step outside for a breath of fresh air. On very cold days, her asthma flares, and she must be cautious and stay indoors. She worries about her youngest son, who has more allergies than his older brothers—allergies that may be asthma-related. Testifying with Moms Clean Air Force at EPA hearings and in support of environmental bills at the U.S. Capitol is one important way Shaina lives up to her responsibility to protect all living beings and secure a future for all children. https://www.momscleanairforce.org/state-chapters/colorado/

Litter that begins anywhere can end up impacting the health of our oceans. Tune in to hear my interview with Dann Diez about the International Coastal Cleanup Day.
Oceans make up over 70 percent of the earth's surface. The seas connect all of us to each other, beyond boundaries. Whatever harm we do on land trickles out to the ocean, through evaporation and the cycle of water.
Dann Diez is part of the Philippines National Clean Up Day Coalition. He is the founder and CEO of Sustainable Energy and Enterprise Development for Communities (SEED4COM).
The International Coastal Cleanup began more than 30 years ago, when communities rallied together with the common goal of collecting and documenting the trash littering their coastline.
Held the third Saturday in September annually and convened by Ocean Conservancy, the goal is working toward trash-free seas. This year, the cleanup day will be held on September 21, 2019, one day after the Global Climate Strike on September 20, 2019.

Tune in for a video tour of the Bakhita Garden, St. Ignatius Loyola's community garden. The purpose of the garden is to feed the poor, while nourishing the earth and building community in Denver, Colorado.
When Paul Gibson began attending the St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, he heard about the parish green team. The Care for Our Common Home team, named after the Pope Francis Encyclical of the same name, began in 2016 and was focused on glass recycling, battery recycling and climate action.

Paul wanted to expand the scope to include his passion. "To me, Care for Our Common Home means care of the earth and care of the poor," said Paul Gibson, coordinator of the Loyola garden project.
The garden was named the Bakhita Garden, after Saint Josephine Bakhita, the patron saint of Sudan. It is located two blocks from the church, on the southeast corner of 23rd and Vine St in Denver.

In January 2019, Tara joined the Green Team Accelerator Lab, an initiative led by Joan to mentor 20 teams across Metro Denver. Tara had an idea of a neighborhood-to-neighborhood waste diversion challenge. She brought it to the Accelerator Lab meetings. Other neighborhoods quickly hopped on board. Tara met with Taylor Moellers, of Denver Sustainable Neighborhoods and Tay Dunklee with Denver Recycles, and both programs agreed to partner.
Sponsored by Denver Recycles, Denver Sustainable Neighborhoods and the Green Team Academy, the Denver Compost Challenge kicked off in April 2019 to continue through November 2019.
About half of the materials picked up from Denver residents bound for the landfill could instead be composted. Now, all addresses in Denver's service area (residences up to 7 dwellings) have access to the Denver Composts! program, but only about 10% have signed up for the weekly pick-up of the green composting cart.

Alhassan Sesay's personal motto is, "If not us, who? If not now, when?"
Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the world and is already experiencing the impacts of climate change. In 2013, the United Nations warned that the country was particularly vulnerable to increasing frequency and severity of droughts, floods and severe storms.
In 2015, Alhassan Sesay founded the Sierra Leone School Green Club. In 2016, he attended a training in Ghana as part of YALI, the Young African Leaders Initiative.
Since then, the SLSGC has organized multiple workshops, training and advocacy events, including the first #FridaysforFuture in Sierra Leone. They also participated in the May 2019 School Strike for the Climate and are planning an event for the September 2019 Global Climate Strike.

By transformative change, we mean a fundamental, system-wide reorganization across technological, economic and social factors, including paradigms, goals and values.”

Anese attributes her passion for nature to her parents. Anese was raised in Pakistan and in Latin America. "It made us appreciate the world as entire planet and how amazing it is." said Anese. "We're not all that different."
Anese has been a teacher for 28 years and previously helped with a garden at her previous school. Anese began working at Reagan Elementary with Ector County Independent School District in Odessa, TX in 2016. Anese teaches in a bilingual second-grade class. The kids in the classroom are Spanish speakers, mostly from rural areas.

Recycling at Reagan Elementary
Anese started by reading books to her kids, including The Lorax and The Wump World. This set the foundation of why it's important to care for the planet.
Next, Anese helped her kids start recycling plastic bottles, from their school breakfasts. Anese explained to the kids, "This plastic is from fossil fuels, a natural resource that comes from the ground. We live in the Permian basin. This is why many of your parents have a job. We need to conserve this precious natural resource." She then added recycling of cardboard, paper and aluminum in the classroom.
From there, Anese coordinated with her principal, Mr. Wayne Squires, to get approval to expand the recycling program schoolwide. "It's important to have the support of your principal, custodians, teachers and parents."
Anese's journey with recycling follows what many teachers do. She started by buying her own bins for her classroom. From there, she went out and found several partner organizations that each supported the program:
Advice for Others
Asked what advice she would give to a teacher who want to start something similar in the schools in their community, Anese said,
- Have a big idea of what you want to do, but start small with your classroom.
- Change the routine to include recycling, and let the kids cycle through so they all learn how to do it.
- Be able to motivate people and encourage people. rather than pushing people to do something they don't want to do.
- Be ready to support them when they're ready to change.
- Be positive, helpful and patient!
- Use social media to highlight progress and generate interest.
- Remind your students that they are leaders, and that they will take care of the planet going forward.
- Don't give up! Be the light. Be the change.

It's summertime and that means outdoor festivals, food and fun... and more often than not, a ton of waste!

Zero Waste Tips from Becky Migas, B Green Events Becky has years of experience in event coordination, working with the 80/35 Music Festival and a historic theater in Des Moines, Iowa. In 2014, Becky moved to Denver and began working with an event coordination company, helping with hundreds of events each year across the country.
Seeing the amount of waste generated by events was so unsettling, Becky decided to make a change. She started her own company, B Green Events, to help people hold events that were good for people and for the planet.
One issue is that people during events are so distracted, the last thing on their minds are what to do with your trash. Some events now use "bioplastics", that is, plastic materials that are made from corn, sugarcane or other plant. Because bioplastic cups and forks look and feel like plastic, people often think they can't be compostable. If they can be composted, it will say "compostable" on the cup.
Sometimes the compost Becky says, "I'm the party planner that's a party pooper, some days."
One of the big mistakes is waiting until the end of the event. If you just come in at the end, many of the important decisions will already have been made.
"A lot of people come in two days before their event and want to divert their waste. It tends to be an afterthought, rather than forethought," said Becky.
You can have the biggest impact through decisions made in the planning stage. The first thing is to work with food vendors. Ensure that all vendors are using compostable-compliant materials. Confirm that they are certified by Biodegradable Products Institute and Manufacturers Compost Alliance. Don't get caught by greenwashing. Ensure that the products you choose can actually break down in industrial composting facilities.
Water bottles are another big source of waste. Look at alternatives such as water stations with compostable cups.
With other beverages, again, look at compostable cups or using cans instead.
Composting is still a single-use approach, so it's better to eliminate the products entirely wherever possible.
How do you handle pushback when you recommend that people stop selling water bottles, that might be a good moneymaker?
Yes, we need to incorporate event sustainability, in the same way that we now have Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
There are companies out there that want to support events that are sustainable. So, even if there is an additional cost, it may be offset because a sustainable festival can attract more sponsors. It can also create savings streams when you can reuse things year to year.
Other ideas from Joan from Youth of the Earth Festival:
- Purchase used t-shirts from the thrift store
- Purchase reusable water bottles from the thrift store
- Coordinated with Boulder Food Rescue to use rescued food, served on real plates
What is the price difference going to compostable products compared to the ubiquitous "red plastic cups"?
The prices are coming down as compostable products are now starting to be available in grocery stores, Costco, and directly from suppliers such as Eco-Products or World-Centric.
In addition to sponsors, you can also look at grants, such as:
- Can'd Aid, Oskar Blues Foundation
- Strengthening Neighborhoods Grant from Denver Foundation
Additional cost areas may include:
- Compostable products
- Water stations
- Staffing zero waste stations
- Signage for zero waste stations
- Paying for compost hauling
- Zero Waste management services to help you coordinate the event
Make sure you plan to measure your results! Becky uses a system for weighing the waste as you go, and keep track of it on a piece of reused cardboard. In addition, your hauler can weigh and report so you have a way to double-check. Then, take the time to report your results.
Becky sees that over the next few years, as people get more used to doing zero waste events, this will become automatic. Start slow. The more you do, the more you realize you can do.
Even if you don't have a budget to hire a sustainability consultant or coordinator for your event, reach out to B Green Events. Your consultant may be able to help you identify sponsors or grants to fund your zero waste initiative.

Case Study: East High School After Prom In 1978, I graduated from East High School. And I don't think we even had an after prom! Boy, have times changed!
Nowadays, dozens of parents work to create a safe and entertaining event for 800 to 900 students, running from midnight to 4:00 am after the dance has ended.
After seeing the amount of waste generated last year, East High School parent of Sustainable Three decided that they could do better. Becky Migas joined the sustainability committee for the event.
The committee took numerous steps to reduce waste:
- During the planning process, Liz and Becky worked with the different committees, especially food and decorations to help them devise a plan to divert as much waste from the landfill as possible.
- Instead of giving out water bottles as was done in the previous years, they set up water stations. The water was provided in 5-gallon jugs at a discounted price from Rocky Mountain Bottled Water, with compostable cups.
- They turned the zero waste station into a game called "Think, Thank, Dunk". Staffed by parent volunteer "referees", the kids had to stop and think before they dunked their "trash" into the bins. They were amazed when they learned that most items were compostable.
Final Numbers:
- Collected 900 pounds of compost and delivered it to Eco-Cycle in Boulder to be composted in an industrial composter.
- Collected 1,100 pounds of recycling waste sent to Alpine Waste & Recycling through the Denver Recycles program.
- As in previous years, 80% of decorations from this year were either recycled, donated or placed into storage to be used for next year's After Prom.
- A large carload full of decorations from this year were donated to George Washington High Schoool for their prom the next weekend.

Some communities have loads of grocery stores and Farmers Markets options, while others have little to none. Rose Thomas noticed the lack of options in her community of Green Valley Ranch in Denver, Colorado. Without any background in this, Rose dove in and founded the Green Valley Ranch Farmers Market. Tune in to discover the challenges and joys of starting a Farmers Market!
Green Valley Ranch is in the "Far Northeast" area of Denver, Colorado, just west of Denver International Airport. Rose Thomas has lived in this area with her husband for 20 years, from the time it was mostly fields and farms. Green Valley Ranch is now home to 30,000 people and yet has a single grocery store. Not just a "food desert", with plenty of non-nutritious options such as convenience stores, liquor stores and fast food, some refer to such areas as a "food swamp".
Ironically, the area was quite recently agricultural area of farms and fields, so it was the source of fresh, local food. But there was also no Farmers Market. After years of discussing the issue with friends and neighbors and hoping things would change, Rose made the decision in April 2016 to go ahead and start the Green Valley Ranch Farmers Market as a resource for Green Valley Ranch and other communities in the Far Northeast Region.
The Green Valley Ranch Farmers Market is now in its fourth year. The Market is operated under the Green Valley Ranch South Homeowners Association. Rose is the founder and chair of the Market.
That first year was rough. Most of the farmers had committed to other markets in January or February. And of the 10 vendors that committed, only three showed up to the first market day.
"Those three vendors had some of their highest selling days of any market!" said Rose. Even though it was a disappointing start for the number of vendors, the people that showed up vowed to support the market and expressed their appreciation. This buoyed her to keep going. They ended the first season with 10 vendors.
Every year the market has added new features. It now includes:
- Food trucks
- Live music
- Family-friendly activities by the GVR South HOA, and
- Instrument Petting Zoo by Swallow Hill Music
- Sustainability Themes with different nonprofit and community partners every market
The primary focus of the market is to build community engagement in a fun, healthy way where people of all backgrounds get together and enjoy each other and the environment.

As part of Cris Sorency's literacy class at South Lakewood Elementary, students studied the art of persuasion. Then, they put it into action!
Hear from Ben Kerchner, who just graduated from fifth grade at South Lakewood Elementary and how their class, the "Styrofoam Stoppers", worked to get their school to stop using the 2,000 Styrofoam trays per week in the school cafeteria. The school is located in Jefferson County School District in Colorado.
In the spring of 2018, Mr. Sorency was teaching literacy to his sixth graders. In the persuasion unit, his students read in one of the texts about students who started a petition on Change.org and successfully got Dunkin Donuts to stop using Styrofoam.
The students then got the idea to use persuasion to get their school to stop using Styrofoam trays in the cafeteria. The "Styrofoam Stoppers" began a petition on Change.org and began doing research. Yet, with only a couple months to work on it before school was out, the 2018 class wasn't able to accomplish their goal.
So, when the 2019 fifth-grade class began studying persuasion with Mr. Sorency, he informed them of the efforts of the previous year. The 2019 class picked it up. The 25 Styrofoam Stoppers created a board game, a coding game, and put up posters to persuade everyone in the school and the parents to support their initiative.
In April of 2019, the Styrofoam Stoppers presented their research and ask and gave a performance with puppets and humor to Lakewood Mayor Adam Paul, the city’s sustainability manager Jonathan Wachtel and other community members.
In May 2019, the students heard that the school would be transitioning from Styrofoam trays to reusable plastic trays. The trays that had been in use in prior years were relocated and put to use for three grades before the end of the school year. It's expected that the reusuable trays will be expanded for all classes in the school in the coming year.
In August 2019, Ben Kerchner and other former Styrofoam Stoppers will head to Creighton Middle School and elsewhere.
My message to those schools: If you're still using Styrofoam or have areas that could be improved, get ready. These kids now know how to make change happen. It all starts with using the art of persuasion to go for what you believe in.
"It's better if you do it than being afraid. Not only will it help the cause, but it might help you. If you're scared, you might become less scared. It will be a good thing for you and your community."

Violent conflicts between herdsmen and farmers in Nigeria led Dr. Daniel Gbujie to change his focus from medicine to climate action. In order to understand what is climate change and what we can do about it, Daniel attended the Climate Reality Project training in Denver, Colorado in 2017, which is where I met Daniel.
Daniel went on to start Team 54 Project, a nonprofit registered in the U.S. He helped start a new app called RepClime and is asking people to voice their support to ask Google to support it.
Team 54 Project uses a strategy called "All-Inclusive Concept". The idea is that everyone can "come as you are". Use whatever skills you have. Daniel gives an example of a spray-can artist who didn't know anything about climate change. By working together through ideas, the artist created a "Parallel World" painting, using nontoxic paints. The painting has been used to raise awareness about our impacts.
Team 54 Project started to focus on the then 54 African countries. In three months after the training, Daniel gave 100 presentations. It expanded and now works in 169 countries and over 200,000 members in just two years. With their eight creeds, Team 54 helps people get together online, then do actions in their own communities.
What types of projects? For example, Team 54 Project provides ideas for youth-based advocacy programs with art and sports.
- One simple activity is to work with young children by providing them photographs of natural scenery in their area. The students are encouraged to paint it accurately. Through that activity, that spurs conversations around comparing how their areas look versus clean, natural landscapes, and what can be done.
- Another example is hosting soccer matches, starting with a climate presentation then moving on to Team Climate Action vs Team Climate Change. Because soccer is a top interest for youth around the world, this allows local teams to raise awareness about climate action and bring it to the community in a way that is relatable.
Another initiative spurred by David Gbijue is an idea for a new app called the RepClime app, for "Reporting Climate". The goal of the app is to facilitate climate mitigation and adaptation by allowing people even in remote areas to report what they are experiencing and ask for assistance. This could be areas that are experiencing droughts, floods, food insecurity or any issue.

Take a spiritual approach:
Embrace everything and treat it as if it's a living organism. Try to coexist with the land, rather than trying to tame it or dominate it.
Healing land: There's no shortage of land that needs remediation. Traveled around the world, working in deserts, mountains, rainforests.
"It wasn't so much that I found it, as much as it found me."
Joan's engineering background taught her to isolate situations and ignore interactions. Gardening teaches you interconnectedness.
Yes, hands on learning is important, but it's nice also to have studied agriculture and horticulture.
Frank grows flowers because they are food for the soul, but they're also a good market item and they attract beneficial insects.
Strive to create a healthy ecosystem. If you're not moving with nature, you're going to move it against it. And you'll never win.
As the garden grows, so does the gardener.
Tips for starting a community gardener:
- Get a commitment that the spot will be available for the long haul, if possible.
- Consider protection from animals to avoid the heartbreak of having your garden destroyed overnight.
- Make sure you have access to sun and water.
- Be prepared to spend time building the soil with compost.
- Have an enthusiastic group of people that can work together.
- Most gardens have one person who is willing and able to do what needs to be done. Be willing to embrace that.
- Look at it as a learning process.
- The garden and the gardener will change and grow together over time.
- Why not do it like you're going to do it for the long term? Do it like you're going to do it once.
- It's gotta be fun.
Living things are like that. If you invest in them, they pay you back. If you invest in the soil, it gets easier because it pays you back.

The first few years are the honeymoon. You gotta love it. It's a godawful amount of work.
If you're not doing it well, it will teach out. You can make educated mistakes. You don't have to reinvent the wheel.
How do you improve your soil?
Add compost. It adds the microbial array, including worms that are working round the clock to improve the soil.
Or start a worm bed using California red wigglers.
Live each day as if it's your last, but garden as if you're going to do it forever.
My approach is working with the land is I try to heal the land. But that ain't true. The land heals you.
That's horticulture therapy.
In addition to community gardens and school gardens, consider barrier-free gardens. One example is a project at a VA center so people with disabilities can participate fully. By traditional gardening metrics, the gardens may not appear to be as beautiful or productive, but the people that are able to use them are having fun and that's really important. Even a quadruple amputee at VA is able to participate. He is inspiring and fun to work with.
The paradigm of gardens for healing encompasses healing the land, healing the people.
Gardens also provide a valuable connection with your food.

Every year when you plan out your strategy, make sure you consider how to operate at or at least partner with others who are operating at every level of the engagement ladder.
Yes, there are restrictions around what percent of time registered nonprofits can operate at a political level, but it may not be as restrict as you assumed. Get some expert advice to be sure.
Just remember that our government is 'representative'. Let's take the time to let them know what we care about so they can indeed represent us.

I have a really great great-niece. Tune in today to listen to my interview with Elena Magnie. Elena is 8 years old and lives on the island of St. John in the Virgin Islands. In today's episode, hear about how she did the research to produce a video on plastic pollution. Listen in as Elena and I brainstorm ideas for how she could start a Green Team with her friends.
I contacted Elena after watching this video that she researched and created, with help from her cameraperson (mom!).

Elena's interest in plastic in the ocean was based on hearing about, reading about it in books and on the internet and from seeing it firsthand on the beautiful beaches of St. John. Instead of just feeling sad and angry, Elena created a video to help raise awareness about the issue of plastic in the ocean.
Elena summed up her research on plastic pollution:
"It has to go somewhere. Usually it ends up in the garbage can, which ends up in the ocean, which ends up in fish and all the other things that eat fish and sea animals. It just gets everywhere and it's hurting the environment."
Elena and I discussed ways she could start and grow a Green Team:
- Find one person to start meeting with regularly.
- Plan an event: community clean-up or Earth Day festival
- Or plan to table with information at a festival
- Choose a name for your team
- Focus on: getting together, making a difference and feeling better
Elena's advice for anyone who cares about the earth:
"Remember to always help the earth because it can't get better on its own."

That's why it's important to form a Green Team. Sitting in a circle with people that each in their own way are passionate about the planet... that is going to be a profoundly healing experience.
Yes, together you're going to make a big impact in your community.
But also know that a bunch of "green sheep" in a circle is going to be a place of solace for you, where you will fit in.

Join us for a look at the Green New Deal and what you can do to make it happen, in today's episode with an interview with Marie Venner.
When newly-elected Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joined a group of young protesters who showed up in Nancy Pelosi's office, many heard for the first time about a Green New Deal.
The idea has been around for awhile, but it is gaining steam largely in part due to those young protestors with the Sunrise Movement who are pushing Congress to adopt it in the rulemaking for the 2019 session. The youth have a "healthy impatience" urging us to deal with and resolve these issues.
Advocates of a Green New Deal are asking people to contact their U.S. House Representative this week and on into the end of December and ask them to:
"Commit to establishing a Select Committee for a Green New Deal and reject fossil fuel campaign donations."
The two key pillars of the Green New Deal are:
- Transition to clean fossil-fuel-free economy
- Jobs for everyone who wants them

The best thing about organizing a team in your community is that you can have one-to-one conversations. In today’s episode we learn about the Belonging Revolution in Longmont, Colorado. In an interview with Dan Benavidez, we hear how he and Director of Public Safety, Mike Butler, are building community by walking neighborhoods with the simple message: You belong.
Dan Benavidez is a long time Longmont resident who has served his community in many capacities. From Mayor Pro-tem to board member of Teaching Peace, Eco-Cycle, Longmont Community Justice Partnership and many other organizations he has represented the Latino community with heart and commitment. These days Dan is literally walking his talk about building strong, cohesive communities by walking Longmont neighborhoods with Director of Public Safety, Mike Butler as they venture to grow “The Belonging Revolution”.
Mike has served Longmont for two decades as Chief of Police and now Director of Public Safety. He makes a habit of engaging innovative strategies for connecting “public” and “safety”. His latest innovation is to be an ambassador for Belonging in Longmont. The city’s slogan is, “You belong in Longmont”, and these two are bringing that notion to life.
Longmont, Colorado:
Population 100,000
Approximately 30% Latino population, many foreign-born Mexicans
Many come from places where the police and politicians are corrupt.
July 2014: Mike Butler reached out and asked Dan Benavidez to take a walk in the neighborhood.
Now, Dan and Mike go out and walk neighborhoods in Longmont most Sundays.
Typical interaction:
Residents are out working in the yard or on their cars, Dan says in Spanish, Hello, This is the Chief of Police and he’d like to meet you. Then Mike says the same in English and gives them his card. He tells them they belong in Longmont and asks how they feel. He then asks them if they would volunteer. A conversation ensues. Sometimes, they’ll be invited for a bite to eat. Dan takes a picture so they have something to share with their friends and family, showing that they know the Chief of Police.
Have walked over 200 neighborhoods. Talked individually with 2,000-3,000 people. Over 1,000 have signed up to volunteer.
Commitment: Dan and Mike, nearly every Sunday.
Longmont: Lowest crime rate in the state of Colorado. Five years ago there was quite a number of gangs. Virtually no gangs now.
This didn’t happen because of Ferguson. It took off before that.
Spreading across the U.S…. so they really are starting a revolution.
They are taking the power right down to the people, where they are. They’re not asking people to come to a City Council meeting. Instead, they’re going where the people already are.
In addition to Mike and Dan, sometimes others will join them: Mayor, City Councilperson, Congressmen, County Commissioner. But the rule is, no politics. The goal is to bring the power to the people.
Mike asks, Have you ever had any interactions with the police? Has anyone ever stopped you? Tell me about it.
Another question that the Mayor might ask, Do you like the way we’re running the city?
Advice to others who want to start a similar effort, around public safety or environment:
Go to the people. You don’t say come to an event out of the neighborhood. Go where they’re at. Don’t make them come to you.
Example: Did an initiative with Eco-Cycle. Had an event in the community, with the Mayor, food and information. Did not ask people to sign up. Results: Recycling increased 130%
Simple agenda:
You belong here. How’s it going? Having a conversation.
This demonstrates that having one-to-one conversations makes those deep connections.

If you’re feeling exhausted by making millions of decisions about shopping and recycling, then this episode will give you hope! In this episode, let’s discuss the video The Story of Change and the key to societal transformation.
I'm a big fan of the free videos created by Annie Leonard and the nonprofit that grew out of her 2007 viral video, The Story of Stuff. If you want a short video to cover the basics of key environmental issues, chances are The Story of Stuff has one. That's why I wasn't surprised when I found their Story of Change video.
In under seven minutes, you can watch the entire Story of Change.So, yup, watch it and use it with your team.
Here are the key points from the Story of Change movie:
We are getting the message:
We can go green by being better shoppers and recyclers and telling our friends to do the same. If I do this, I've done my part. And if I don't, it's my fault that the planet is being destroyed.
This has some serious shortcomings!
It's not about just voting with our dollars. Real change comes when citizens come together to demand rules that work.
We can learn from successful movements throughout history: Gandhi, the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, the U.S. Civil Rights Movement and the environmental victories here in the 1970s. They didn't nag people to perfect their day-to-day choices. They changed the rules of the game.
Here are the three things to do to change the world:
- Share a big idea for how things could be better.
- Millions of ordinary people need to decide, "We will work together until the problem is solved."
- With big idea and commitment to work together, take action.
After I first watched this, I gave a huge sigh of relief. I realized I was exhausting myself focusing on a million shopping and recycling decisions.
Now, I know, my real power is working on these three things: sharing a big idea, getting together with millions of people, and demanding the change we want.
The best way to get millions together is to start with two, then ten, then 100's, and 1000's around the world.
In the movie Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom, they kept using the symbol of an open hand to represent the fingers (individuals) as vulnerable, compared to the closed fist (group) as strong.
It's not enough to try to "be the change". We need to get together and "demand the change" we want to see in this world.

After all, would we even know who Gandhi was if he just sewed his own clothes and then sat back waiting for the British to leave India?" - Annie Leonard, Story of Change

In honor of World Mental Health Day on October 10, let’s explore how we can bolster our mental health. Each of us is at risk for the debilitating impacts of mental health struggles. In this episode, discover Joan’s top five mental health tools and how her mental health needs have shifted after the death of her mom and sister.
As I was out in my car, I heard bits and pieces of an interview on Colorado Public Radio with Adam Cayton-Holland discussing his tragic-comic memoir about dealing with his sister’s suicide. In talking about the book, Tragedy Plus Time, Adam talks about how mental health is something that requires constant awareness.

Find out how two teachers started an Eco-Club at St. Mary Redcliffe and Temple School in Redcliffe, Bristol, England. In less than two years, their initiative changed from starting an eco-club to building an eco-community. Their projects include litter patrol, plastic recycling, school gardening, hosting a green event for other schools, and more. Tune in to this inspiring story of regular people becoming eco-leaders in their communities!

[1:00] SMRT Eco-Club started in November 2016.
[1:45] Started by two teachers in response to the school leadership encouraging teachers to demonstrate environmental stewardship and the town of Bristol issued a goal of becoming a measurably cleaner town by 2020.
[2:45] Started meeting weekly at lunchtime ← important strategy: meeting at a regular time
[3:00] The litter patrol was seen as a bit of a joke at first, but grew to give voice to those that care about resources and their school.
[3:45] Partnered with Redcliffe Garden Club for transforming a neglected piece of land into a school garden.
[4:15] Worked with the school’s leadership team to encourage changes in how photocopier paper is used, and how to encourage more walking to school.
[5:00] Hosted a “green event” for other schools, and included speakers from the town Council
[5:30] Started a mini-recycling center and holding discussions about the problem of plastic in the school
[5:45] Vision for future: plastic recycling well established, zero tolerance for litter, school garden producing healthy food for the school cafeteria, continued links with our community and above all, students automatically embracing the values of respect and care.
[6:00] Changed from an eco-club to an eco-community ... cultural transformation!
[6:30] Advice: Be convinced and be passionate. Don’t let negative remarks put you off. Students can only benefit through an eco-club. Respect for self, others, our planet and our future.

[1:00] In Australia, voting is mandatory. Voter turnout over 90%.
[1:15] If 10 people represented all of the US eligible voters, in 2016 presidential election, 3 voted for Hillary, 3 voted for Trump and 4 didn’t vote.
1:45] Midterm election turnout is historically around 40%.
[2:00] Have you seen the video with Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Rashida Jones talking about the Last Weekend? What could I have done after November 2016 election? Now we have another chance.
[2:30] In this episode, six research-based strategies for getting the vote out.
[2:45] Why? To stop rollbacks of environmental protections and have a government that really represents the people.
[3:15] That’s what increasing voter turnout is all about.
[3:30] 1. Believe you can make a difference.
Increasing voter turnout isn’t easy. Don’t worry that your efforts will go to waste. Simple steps can increase the number of voters, and they rely on person-to-person interactions.
[4:00] 2. Make sure that you’re ready to vote and that you have a plan
Rock the Vote: check your voter registration status, register to vote and find out more about ballots and polling places.
[4:20] 3. Set aside some time on the last weekend to volunteer.
Organizers say that you can have the most impact on the last few days. Look at your calendar right now. Set aside some time to get out there. Saturday November 3 - Tuesday November 6.
Easiest: Sign up with LastWeekend.org. You can help by canvassing (most effective), phone calls (great for reaching other areas), or help with writing, editing, social media or events. You choose.
[5:15] 4. Research and be a resource.
Voting isn’t necessarily easy or straightforward. Visit RocktheVote and look up your state to dig in to details about what documentation is needed, regulations for convicted felons, voter registration deadlines, what to do if you’ve recently moved and if you can register the day of the election (as you can in Colorado!).
[6:00] 5. Hold a house party.
Have a voter registration party or election watch party to help your friends be voters.
[6:30] 6. Have better conversations (five parts):
- Talk to people about voting.
- Tell them that voter turnout is expected to be high.
- Talk about what it means to them to “be a voter” (rather than just “voting”).
- Discuss their plans for voting.
- Hold them accountable.

Hey, I’m pretty excited about the November 6 election. There’s really a lot at stake this time and they’re expecting a high voter turnout. It’s really important to me to be a voter. How about you?

Climate change is arguably the biggest global health threat of the 21st century. So, why aren’t we taking steps to change our behavior? The Australian Psychological Society (APS) has tackled this head on with their Climate Change Empowerment Handbook. The handbook covers the known cognitive biases we need to overcome, and eight strategies that can help people more effectively engage with the challenge of climate change. APS also created a nifty graphic using the acronym ACTIVATE to illustrate the eight strategies.

The ecological challenges ahead of us are of epic proportions. We can learn a lot by studying successful revolutions that have come before us. How often do we take the time to declare the world we want and commit to helping create it. “The World We Want Is” is a global movement centered on interactive public art. You can use a paper version of this exercise to help your community brainstorm the future they want.

[1:30] Every five-year-old knows how to draw, dance and sing, but somehow adults don’t. What happened?
[1:40] Education has some negative side-effects. Dampens spontaneity. Dampens creativity.
[2:10] Toddler will dance, sing, draw.
[2:20] Adults suffer from a lack of spontaneity, from thinking that things are easy or doable.
[2:30] Include people as young as possible.
[3:00] Example: Four-year-old had a booth to teach about sea animals.
[4:10] The key to creating the new world that we need is all about imagination. That’s what kids are so good at.
[4:45] It might be that the experts that you need are the kids in your community.

[1:30] Being polite has serious consequences.
[1:45] Talking with my dad and hearing Jimmy Carter, I thought working in energy efficiency was enough.
[2:15] There was this feeling that you couldn’t really talk about the big issues.
[3:15] This came up with people I’ve interviewed: not wanting to be pushy, wanting to stay under the radar to avoid vehement opinions about climate action.
[3:45] There is no way to stay under the radar. I’m sorry. There is no way to do this work and not make people feel uncomfortable.

[4:15] There is going to be friction there. You are going to make people uncomfortable.
In the process of change, you need people to go from not thinking about it all, to starting to think maybe there is something wrong with what I’m doing.
[4:45] With pesticides, we needed to raise awareness about impacts with neighbors, school districts, big Ag, etc.
[5:30] Just because this isn’t an easy conversation, we aren’t going to walk away.
[5:40] There need to be people that will have these conversations. We need to forget about being people pleasers.
[6:00] Example: plastic. Those benefiting from profit, comfort, convenience.
[6:30] See the discomfort as something positive.
[6:40] Good! Now we’re being honest. Let’s talk about what we can do better.

What’s stopping you from becoming an eco-leader? If you’re thinking that you need experience as an eco-leader or even as a leader, at all, think again! Learn from Xiuhtezcatl Martinez’ first public speech at age six.

Don’t get discouraged before you even get started. You don’t need a huge group assembled to start. In fact, every movement starts with just two people. Can you find just one other person to work with?

While many in the Trump administration are denying the science around climate change, it’s up to us to know the science and be confident sharing it. Here are a few facts to share about the warmest years on record.

[3:30] According to NASA, 17 of the 18 warmest years in the 136-year record all have occurred since 2001, with the exception of 1998.

My evolution as an eco-warrior was hindered by the fact that I was so naive, for so long. Today’s episode is a short and sweet message. Instead of being gullible and trusting. be more like an investigative reporter. Don’t be naive.

The idea that social ills will just work themselves out over time is a myth. In his March 31, 1968 speech, Martin Luther King, Jr., explains how we must use time for the good of society or it will be used to our detriment by those who are using it for ill will. We can’t be “too busy” to stand up to protect each other and our planet.

The hour has come for everybody, for all institutions of the public sector and the private sector to work to get rid of racism. And now if we are to do it we must honestly admit certain things and get rid of certain myths that have constantly been disseminated all over our nation.
One is the myth of time. It is the notion that only time can solve the problem of racial injustice. And there are those who often sincerely say to the Negro and his allies in the white community, "Why don’t you slow up? Stop pushing things so fast. Only time can solve the problem. And if you will just be nice and patient and continue to pray, in a hundred or two hundred years the problem will work itself out."
There is an answer to that myth. It is that time is neutral. It can be used wither constructively or destructively.
And I am sorry to say this morning that I am absolutely convinced that the forces of ill will in our nation, the extreme rightists of our nation—the people on the wrong side—have used time much more effectively than the forces of goodwill. And it may well be that we will have to repent in this generation. Not merely for the vitriolic words and the violent actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence and indifference of the good people who sit around and say, "Wait on time."
Somewhere we must come to see that human progress never rolls in on the wheels of inevitability. It comes through the tireless efforts and the persistent work of dedicated individuals who are willing to be co-workers with God. And without this hard work, time itself becomes an ally of the primitive forces of social stagnation. So we must help time and realize that the time is always ripe to do right.

This is a beautiful story about two girls who started at age 10 and 12 with the initial goal of being significant. Through their efforts, the Governor of Bali agreed to help Indonesia be plastic-bag-free by 2018. It’s a story of determination, creativity and commitment. They formed a youth organization, collected petition signatures, gave educational talks and went on a hunger strike. Their takeaway is that youth can make change. And my takeaway is that there is no reason that any of us can’t also be significant now.

[6:40] Kids can do things. We can make things happen. Don’t need a business plan or agenda.
[6:55] Kids have a boundless energy and motivation to be the change this world needs.

[7:50] This is a big shift from the egotistical view of thinking that we as humans have all the answers, know what’s best and can outdo nature.
[8:00] If we can flip our thinking around, it makes our job easier because the blueprint is in front of us.
Life’s Principles:
Life runs on current sunlight. (We run on ancient photosynthesis trapped in fossil fuels.)
Life does its chemistry in water as the universal solvent. (We tend to use very toxic chemicals like sulphuric acid.)
Life depends on local expertise. Organisms have to know the limits and opportunities of their places.
Life banks on diversity and rewards cooperation.
Life wastes nothing, upcycles everything and most of all does not foul its home.
Life uses a small subset of the periodic table: the safe elements. (We use all elements.)
Life uses low temperatures, low pressure, low toxicity. (We force elements to bond or break with high temperatures and pressures.)

[5:30] One in three don’t talk about it because “it never comes up”.
[5:45] Spiral of silence: We don’t talk about it because it never comes up.
[6:20] Only four in ten Americans (43%) say they hear about global warming in the media at least once a month
[6:30] In the U.S. federal administration, we have people proactively deleting mention of climate change.
[7:00] As individuals, the place we need to start working is having conversation to change hearts and minds.
[7:20] When I drive for Uber, I find ways to talk about climate change through hurricanes, wildfires or changes since youth.

[5:00] Mayor and City Council members attended

It’s so tempting to close your eyes. Busy yourself with other things. How do we be with our world without going crazy. I think, For the past 40 years, that’s been the question that’s pursued me. I’m actually grateful for it. When you find a question like that, it’s good news.

Dealing with the Pain of these Times
In every myth, the hero or heroine are called to look the monster straight in the eye and not turn to stone.
We need each other in ways that we never have before. Because All through human history there was this tacit assumption that life would continue on this planet. Oh yeah, there were wars, there was poverty, there was plague and pestilence and death of course and illness and old age and all that. But always there was this tacit assumption that life would continue. That the work of our hearts and hands would go on for future generations. And that’s what’s lost now. And that loss of certainty for the ongoingness of life is the pivotal psychological reality of our time. So my way of dealing with the overwhelm is to look it straight in the eye and and say, there you are again. To realize that we are suffering with our world. And not try to pave it over or apologize for it. And not see it as a personal weakness, a personal craziness. But almost to bow to it, you are suffering with your world. It’s the most natural thing in the world. It’s the most wholesome, healthy thing in the world too. Don’t be afraid of your heart breaking open.. The heart that breaks open can hold the whole universe. It’s that big. I want so much to feel sure. I want to be able to tell people don’t worry. It’s going to be okay. But I realize that that wouldn’t be doing anybody a favor. First of all, we can’t know. But secondly, if somehow, we could be given a pill to be convinced, don’t worry it’s going to turn out ok. Would that elicit from us our greatest creativity and courage. No. It’s that knife edge of uncertainty where we come alive to our truest power. So we do ourselves the favor. We honor ourselves to live with sufficient realism and dignity to know we’re right with that knife edge of uncertainty. We don’t know how it’s going to come out. There are no guarantees. Then we realize, wait. There aren’t any guarantees anyway. There are no guarantees when you fall in love that you’re going to have a lasting relationship There are no guarantees when you go into labor that you’ll have a healthy delivery There are no guarantees that When you put seeds in the soil that there’ll be sufficient rain and warmth for a bumper crop. There never has been guarantee for human life. And it’s in that uncertainty. And this crisis is like an exquisite wind and fire of uncertainty, that is the nature of life. All the wise ones tell us that. That’s where we come alive.
