In today’s episode of Magic in the Room, Chris and guest John Ruhlin discuss a new way to think about gifting. The bottom line is that gifts can be used to build long-lasting relationships, but not if you just put the company logo on a mug and send it to everyone. In today's episode of Magic in the Room, we continue our series on leading a team with the foundational skill leaders must have: the ability to build trust. It may sound cliche, but trust is the foundation of a high-performing team. In fact, Luke and Hannah argue that dogs have better lives and fewer people die when teams have high trust! When teams don't have trust, the result is lower performance, lower well-being, and ultimately, people leave. If you focus on one thing as a leader, it should be building trust.

Intentional Leaders notice something that could be better, choose how to change things for the better, and act to make the change. However, to notice things that could be better, we have to keep our eyes and ears open to take in information from all around us.

Intentional Leadership requires awareness of the under-the-surface factors that impact the things we notice, our choices, and our actions. In this episode of Magic in the Room, Hannah, Chris, and Luke introduce the Iceberg Model. The part of the iceberg above the surface of the water represents the things we do that are visible to the people around us. Under the surface is all the factors that influence us, starting with our personality and the things we have experienced. When we know how our experiences and personality impact us and others, we can make more intentional choices about the outcomes of our actions.

We are kicking off a new season of Magic in the Room with a four-part series on Intentional Leadership. In this episode, Hannah, Luke, and Chris make the case that everyone is a leader, no matter their job title. Because we are all leaders, we can intentionally influence the people and situations we encounter.

We define Intentional Leadership as a three-step process:

  1. We notice something that could be better

  2. We choose how to change things for the better

  3. We act to make the change

By cultivating our awareness to notice, ability to choose, and courage to act, everyone can have a more significant positive impact on the world around them.

The past and present wilt—I have fill'd them, emptied them. And proceed to fill my next fold of the future.

Listener up there! what have you to confide to me? Look in my face while I snuff the sidle of evening, (Talk honestly, no one else hears you, and I stay only a minute longer.)

Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.)

I concentrate toward them that are nigh, I wait on the door-slab.

Who has done his day's work? who will soonest be through with his supper?

Who wishes to walk with me?

Will you speak before I am gone? will you prove already too late?

Happy Holidays from Purpose and Performance Group!

We hope you are having an incredible Holiday Season! Enjoy this bonus episode!

Twas the Night Before the Office Holiday Party

'Twas the night before the office holiday party, and all through the house,

The leader was pacing, consumed by stress and doubt.

They had to face their team at the party, and didn't know what to say,

About the coming recession, and the challenges that lay ahead after new year's day.

The kids were all nestled, snug in their beds,

While visions of squishmallows danced in their heads.

But the leader lay awake, feeling overwhelmed and drained,

Wondering how they would get through the party, let alone sustain their business and refrain

From spilling the beans about the struggles they feared,

And the challenges that lay ahead, most likely in the coming year.

They knew their team was counting on them, to provide cheer and hope,

But they just didn't know how to keep smiling, through what felt like an existential joke.

Suddenly, from downstairs, there came a knock on the door,

The leader hesitated, then rushed down, not wanting to ignore.

But as they opened the door, to their great surprise,

Stood Santa Claus, dressed as a businessman, in a red, green, and white tie.

"Don't be afraid, my dear leader," Santa said with a grin,

"I've come to share some wisdom, let us begin.

You see, the key to leading with hope and resilience,

Is vulnerability, honesty, and clear purpose, to enable persistence."

The leader's eyes lit up, as they listened with intent,

Finally seeing a new way to prevent

The stress and overwhelm that had been weighing them down,

They knew exactly what to do, and a smile began to drown

The doubts and fears that had been consuming their mind,

They knew that with Santa's wisdom, they could leave all that behind.

And with that, Santa chuckled and waved goodbye,

Hopped into his sleigh, and disappeared into the sky.

Next morning the leader rose with a new sense of pride,

Determined to lead with vulnerability, honesty, and purpose, open and wide.

They arrived at the office, feeling light and free,

And spent the day reflecting, clarifying, and their purpose beginning to see.

Finally 'twas the night of the party, and the leader was ready,

The snacks were being eaten, and ugly sweaters were sweaty.

The team was nestled all snug in their places,

While the leader stood before them, ready to meet their gazes.

"I know we've faced some challenges," the leader began to say,

"But I want you to know, that we'll get through this, come what may."

They talked about recession, talent retention, and the struggles they faced,

But also about not letting fear distract them from running their own, special race.

The leader took a deep breath, and looked out at the team,

Feeling welling gratitude, and a tear in their eye began to gleam.

They knew that their team was more than just a group of resources,

They were people, with hopes and dreams, with untapped energy resources.

"Deep down we all want more than just a paycheck," the leader said with a smile,

"We want to do work that matters, and to feel a sense of belonging all the while.

We're not just a group of people, trading our hours for cash,

We're a team, with a shared purpose, and an opportunity we shouldn’t let pass."

The team smiled, and listened close, feeling a sense of pride,

Knowing that they were part of something bigger, and that they could always confide

In their leader, and with one other, they could create a new song.

Together, they could tackle any challenge, make one another better, and belong.

"We're all in this together," the leader reminded with a smile,

"And with honesty, vulnerability, and a clear authentic purpose, we'll go the extra mile."

The team nodded in agreement, feeling uplifted and ready to slay

Any challenge that lay ahead, on this, the most festive of days.

As the party rocked on, and the team made merry,

Santa watched from the office window, his heart feeling very

Full of joy in the hope that radiated from the leader and team.

He knew that they were well on their way to achieving a dream.

And later, as the boss walked into the night,

They called back to the team with all their might,

"On spreadsheets, on dashboards, on emails and calls!

On production, on deadlines, on sales and all!

Aligned on our purpose, we’ll refocus when we fall!

Now bring it on, bring it on, bring it on all!"

Instead, they have a strong vision and invite people to join them.

Hot Toast Music Co. is the product of dad, educator and musician Symon Hajjar who writes irresistible kids’ music, all with purpose. Hajjar, or Mr. Symon as his students call him, draws inspiration from the way children often find magic in the mundane parts of life that are hidden in plain sight. For Hajjar, Hot Toast is not just "kids music" but an opportunity for wide-eyed innovators of all ages to join in the fun of self-discovery and creativity. Hajjar's stellar songwriting skills bring an easiness to talking about difficult or serious topics with kids, as well as delighting in the pure joy children find in simply being silly. Songs are anchored with creative activities that combine the tactile with the message of each song, turning each song into an opportunity for discovery!

In this episode of Magic in the Room, Chris, Hannah, and Luke make the case that the traditional compensation formula of "wage + cost of benefits + cost of recognition programs" is inadequate for organizations that want to provide meaningful employment. Leaders must be willing to think about compensation in disruptive ways to attract and retain employees by using a new formula, "wage + cost of benefits + recognizing your needs." Recognizing people's needs means listening and being creative in ensuring employees' well-being.

We made it to 100 episodes of Magic in the Room! In this episode, Luke, Hannah, and Chris reflect on what we have all learned together by recording 100 intentional conversations. Everyone who has listened, contributed, commented, and supported us are part of this milestone, and we are grateful to you all! This episode was originally recorded and streamed live.

During this episode Luke, Hannah, and Chris each mention an episode that had a big impact on them. Here they are:

Luke: Magic in the Room #79: How to Develop Leaders with Greg Robinson

This conversation with Greg Robinson helped Luke understand that leadership is not defined solely by the science of best practices, behaviors, and competencies. Rather, leaders are also defined by their character, values, and conviction.

Hannah: Magic in the Room #65: The Hope Theory with Special Guest Dr. Chan Hellman

This conversation with Dr. Chan Hellman helped Hannah understand hope as a tangible idea that can be measured. People with hope have a vision, a pathway to accomplishing the vision, and the agency to execute that plan, which is in direct contrast to someone who dreams of a better future but has no hope of that dream ever becoming a reality.

Chris: Magic in the Room #84: Win and Help Win in Tribal Enterprise with Brian Gooden

Episode 84 included a conversation with Brian Gooden about what it means to be a Warrior or an Elder, in particular in the context of Tribal Enterprises. Elders provide counsel, and Warriors take action to be responsible for people’s well-being, which does not necessarily mean bearing arms in battle.

When we listen to other people’s stories, we may realize there are challenges in the world that are bigger than ourselves. Sometimes we are compelled to take on these challenges and change the world around us. In this episode of Magic in the Room, Hannah and Chris are joined by guest Jeanne Allert, who tells her story of living a purpose-driven life by making sure victims of sex trafficking have access to qualified, compassionate care through The Samaritan Women Institute for Shelter Care.

Jeanne L. Allert, Ph.D. is the Founder and Executive Director of The Samaritan Women Institute for Shelter Care. In 2007 Jeanne was convicted to leave the trappings of a lucrative career as an Internet consultant to establish one of the first long-term restorative care programs in the Mid-Atlantic for victims of domestic sex trafficking. She immersed herself in learning—mostly from survivors themselves—and created TSW-ISC’s unique Care Model. Over the years TSW expanded its service and took on several national research projects. In 2018-2019 she led the organization through a major shift to create the Institute of Shelter Care, which leverages the expertise of TSW-ISC and industry peers across the country to train and mentor new shelter programs in the areas of greatest need.

His experience includes working as the Program Director for HoneyRock, the Outdoor Center for Leadership Development of Wheaton College, as well as President of Challenge Quest, LLC in Pryor, Oklahoma, the Managing Member of Adventure Quest Recreation, LLC.

Why does your company exist? What is its “why”? In this episode of Magic in the Room, Chris, Luke, and guest John Stewart discuss John’s company Encompass. The people and leadership of Encompass work hard to serve their clients with the purpose of investing in the communities where they work and live. Because the company exists to support communities, measuring success includes profit, but everyone is intentional to use that profit for the good of the community.

About John Stewart, President, Encompass Develop, Design & Construct, LLC

John has a lot of titles – company owner, registered architect, licensed contractor, recognized authority in the gaming and hospitality industry. But the title he prefers is “partner.” That’s how he built a $100+ million company that is the choice of major companies such as Yum! Brands, Ford Motor Company, Churchill Downs, Pinnacle, and Brown-Forman. John’s nearly three decades of work experience runs the gamut from gaming and hospitality to religion and retail.

He has built churches, casinos and corporate headquarters, but his greatest skill is building teams of dedicated, talented professionals. He’s a servant leader who devotes time to his family, community, and church, volunteering as a teacher for 3rd and 4th graders, a marriage mentor and an educator on Business and Work as a tool for missions.
