On June 26, 2014, the life of Bree Moore, a 20-year old young woman with a bright future, was cut short with an act of violence. She was shot to death by her boyfriend in a fit of dating violence.

The murder of Bree Moore was more than tragedy. It was yet another sad moment in an ongoing American tragedy. Dating violence is one of the unreported issues in America.

The story of Bree's life, the inspiring person she was and the unspeakable tragedy that befell her, has focused a searchlight on the epidemic of teen dating violence in Alaska. Bree’s parents, Butch and Cindy, wanted to make sure Bree’s death was not simply a statistic. What happened to Bree should not have happened and her death should be a lesson for all Alaskans. Their efforts prompted the Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Education (known as Bree’s Law) into The Alaska Safe Children’s Act, which was signed into law by Governor Walker in July 2015.

Because of Bree’s Law, dating violence education is being taught in grades 7-12 in all Alaska public schools. It instructs teens how to develop healthy relationships, practice supportive communication skills, recognize the warning signs of an abusive relationship, and where to go for help.

We have received a drastic increase in phone calls from parents and family members about tragic loss due to fentanyl overdose death. After our conversation on Ep. 24 with Dr. Laura Berman, whose son Samuel lost his life to a pill he purchased on snapchat, we were left heartbroken and passionate about finding, or creating, a real solution to this problem. We connected Dr. Berman with our Ep. 9 Guest, Titania Jordan, who is the Chief Parent Officer at BARK technologies and they, along with others, came up with #LetParentsProtect—A petition for Snapchat, TikTok, and other social media platforms to urge them to allow parents to use third party monitoring tools like BARK to protect children online. The petition argues that in order to save lives, parents need to be the ones who make the choice about whether they want to use third party safety apps, and we couldn’t agree more.

Today on The Balanced Voice we welcome Dr. Berman and Titania Jordan back to the podcast along with Dr. Berman’s husband, Samuel Chapman, Marc Berkman the CEO of the Organization for Social media Safety, and Roger Crystal, CEO of Opiant Pharmaceuticals, Inc and the founder of NARCAN Nasal Spray to discuss the need for better regulations on social media and the dangers of fentanyl. Leading memory experts such as Dr. Elizabeth Loftus suggest that memory is not always as reliable as we think it is, especially amongst children, but jurors are extremely swayed by eyewitness testimony.

In fact, it is widely accepted in the field of psychology that 75% of wrongful convictions include faulty eyewitness testimony. When someone is wrongfully convicted, their life is not only stolen from them, but justice is not served for the victim.

As an organization who believes strongly in elevating and believing the victim, we were extremely interested to have Michelle Tuegel Simpson, attorney and advocate for the legal rights of victims, and Jennifer Hohman, Crime Stoppers of Houston board member and podcast contributor on The Balanced Voice to discuss the intersection between wrongful convictions and victim advocacy.

In this conversation, Rania, Michelle and Jennifer discuss wrongful convictions, eyewitness testimony, victim advocacy and trauma informed care.

Welcome to the episode 3 of The Balanced Voice with Rania Mankarious!

At age 18, high school football all-star, Greg Kelley was convicted of two counts of sexually assaulting a child, and sentenced to 25 years without the possibility of parole. After spending over 1,100 days in prison, Greg was granted bond thanks to a community of mostly strangers who stood up and #foughtforGK. He was able to sufficiently prove his innocence of the crime and with the help of the small army behind him, was able to accomplish the almost completely unheard of in November of 2019—total exoneration.

Now the focus of Showtime's docu-series #OUTCRY, Greg and his now wife Gaebri share the horrifying series of events that led to his wrongful conviction, and how he was able to make it out of prison alive.

Greg has now been signed to play football for Eastern Michigan University and we could not be more happy for him!

Lina spearheads NCOSE’s campaigns against corporations profiting from sexual exploitation.

Ms. Nealon is driven to elevate survivor leadership and promote women’s and girls’ empowerment and has done so as the Policy Specialist and Trainer for the Institute for Inclusive Security, Executive Director of Girls on the Run (Greater Triangle Area, NC), Women2Women Advisory Council member, and as a mentor to numerous young women.
