Description of Less of More:
For most Americans, the pursuit of happiness really means the pursuit of more--more money, more prestige, more stuff. We've made idols out of innovation, growth, power, and wealth. Far from offering us happiness and satisfaction, this has only left us exhausted, isolated, miserable, and wondering if there is a better way. There is. Less of More exposes our pursuit of more for what it truly is: an attempt to satisfy our souls with the temporary instead of the eternal. Pastor and writer Chris Nye invites us to consider what a full and abundant life looks like apart from money, status, and power. He exposes the lies inherent in our obsession with growth, fame, and wealth and calls us to a countercultural life marked by connection, obscurity, vulnerability, and generosity. If you have gained the world but lost your soul, Less of More offers a compelling path toward a life of true, deep, lasting satisfaction with Jesus--not us--at the center of it.

Growing up, many of us had a vision for where we would be in life once we reached our 20s, 30s or even our 40s. But when we reach those milestones in our lives it’s rare that we feel reality has lived up to our vision. Somehow, we thought we would feel more adult, would feel settled in our careers and would have some idea of what we wanted to be when we grew up. However, the most important thing we can be doing, the one thing that makes us a success, is raising little disciples of Christ. Join host Jerrad Lopes as he discusses the importance of being intentionally invested in our children. Learn how we can change the world simply by faithfully and passionately loving our children and our wives.
In this Mother's Day episode of the Dad Tired podcast, Jerrad is joined by Hunter Beless, host of the Journey Women Podcast. Join in as the two share about what it looks like for a husband to lead his family well, how to become the spiritual leader of the home, and what wives are truly longing for from their husband.
“You can’t pass on what you don’t possess,” the number one thing any father wanting to raise passionate Jesus followers must remember according to this week’s guest, Phil Comer. In his book, Raising Passionate Jesus Followers (co-written with his wife Diane) Phil offers hope and practical help to parents in their God-given task of raising the next generation of passionate Jesus followers. Join host Jerrad Lopes as he and Phil discuss several of those practical tips on raising godly children, including when spanking may be appropriate and the process to implement this tool in your home. This episode is a good reminder for any father about Christian discipline and for any of those feeling lost on where to begin.
We all look to the future. For some, we do it with arrogance (as mentioned in James 4). And for others, we approach the future with anxiety (Matthew 6). In this episode, join Jerrad as he shares why looking to the future with both anxiety and arrogance leaves us missing the mark of Christian living, and how the Gospel offers us a better alternative.
"Making conscientious choices about technology in our families is more than just using internet filters and determining screen time limits for our children. It's about developing wisdom, character, and courage in the way we use digital media rather than accepting technology's promises of ease, instant gratification, and the world's knowledge at our fingertips. And it's definitely not just about the kids." -Andy Crouch, Tech Wise Family
Join host Jerrad Lopes and best-selling author Andy Crouch as they discuss how the Gospel influences the way we allow technology to play a role in our families.
There are many men struggling. It can be anything from disobedient children, broken marriages, lost jobs, or terminal sickness. The list is unending. Scripture tells us religion that is pure is caring for the orphans (James 1:27). In the United States alone there are more than 400,000 children in the foster care system.* Each child is an opportunity to show God's love, to reach out to the most vulnerable and be an agent of hope. Join host Jerrad Lopes and other members of the Dad Tired community as they share their stories of becoming foster and adoptive parents. While not everyone is called to fostering or adopting, we are all called to love and to pray for one another. This weeks episode will give you a glimpse behind the curtain of what it means to take a child into your home. If God is calling you to take that step, you will benefit from the insights of fathers who have already gone through the process. If fostering or adopting is not right for you and your family, pray for those who are.

So often we as Christians want to focus on only one attribute of God, the attribute of love. But we tend to forget that scripture also tells us that God is a man of war. It's important to understand that both of these attributes are important and help to show us how we as men should be living our lives. Join host Jerrad Lopes and guest John Lovell from the Warrior Poets Society as they discuss God as a warrior, the theology of defense, practical things each of us can do to protect our homes, and how best to be a good father and husband. This episode is different than anything you've heard on Dad Tired previously and you'll want to take the time and listen.
Join host Jerrad Lopes as he discusses the topic of sabbath, with A.J. Swoboda. In this episode, the two discuss questions like:
A. J. Swoboda (PhD, University of Birmingham) pastors Theophilus Church in urban Portland, Oregon. He is executive director of the Seminary Stewardship Alliance, a consortium of Christian higher education institutions dedicated to reconnecting Christians with the biblical call to care for God's creation. Swoboda also teaches biblical studies, theology, and church history at Portland Seminary and Fuller Theological Seminary, among others. He is an award-winning author or editor of nine books and speaks regularly at conferences, retreats, churches, and seminars. Visit his website and blog at www.ajswoboda.com.
In this episode, A.J. and Jerrad discuss his new book, Subversive Sabbath
"We live in a 24/7 culture of endless productivity, workaholism, distraction, burnout, and anxiety--a way of life to which we've sadly grown accustomed. This tired system of "life" ultimately destroys our souls, our bodies, our relationships, our society, and the rest of God's creation. The whole world grows exhausted because humanity has forgotten to enter into God's rest. This book pioneers a creative path to an alternative way of existing. Combining creative storytelling, pastoral sensitivity, practical insight, and relevant academic research, Subversive Sabbath offers a unique invitation to personal Sabbath-keeping that leads to fuller and more joyful lives. A. J. Swoboda demonstrates that Sabbath is both a spiritual discipline and a form of social justice, connects Sabbath-keeping to local communities, and explains how God may actually do more when we do less. He shows that the biblical practice of Sabbath-keeping is God's plan for the restoration and healing of all creation. The book includes a foreword by Matthew Sleeth." Amazon Book Description
Past guest and Pastor of Bridgetown church in Portland Oregon, John Mark Comer gave Subversive Sabbath this raving review:
"Few things are as subversive to the hurry addiction of the modern world than the practice of Sabbath. And few things are as life-or-death important. A. J. has written his best book yet. His keen mind, quick wit, and deep soulfulness come through beautifully, page by captivating page. But more than anything, this is a book that is lived. My new go-to book on the Sabbath."

Comparing our lives to others, it's something we all find ourselves doing from time-to-time. This week, join host Jerrad Lopes as he discusses how comparing ourselves to others is a symptom of something deeper, how in this age of social media we must be even more vigilant, and recognizing the joy in knowing we are loved by God.

The Bible is filled with stories of great feats of faith, courage, and strength. But have you ever wondered about the rest of the story? But these moments in between the chapters gave each man and woman of Christ the opportunity to practice what it was to be a follower of God in the mundane. When something is unsettled in our heart, we do whatever we can to mask it. Work harder, drink more, yell louder, buy something new. Anything to cover up the noise of our soul. We are convinced that if we can make enough noise, the tugging of the Holy Spirit will go away.
At the root of our noise-making-efforts is shame. We believe that when things get quiet, we will hear the sound of a sinful heart. And the truth is, you’re right. Your heart is sinful and wicked, deserving of punishment and shame. But there is good news; The Gospel & the fact that God has a reputation of engaging broken and messy people with grace. In this episode, join host Jerrad Lopes as he talks about entering into 2018 with a new mercy and what that practically looks like for us as husbands and dads.

Giving of ourselves as fathers and husbands can leave us susceptible to emotional pain. As men, we can be known for trying to complete a project without reading the instructions. Sometimes we succeed and sometimes we are left with extra parts that we have no idea what they are for. Unfortunately, this is often our approach to the gospel as well. We try to live right and share Jesus with others but we don’t take the time to engross ourselves in the instruction manual – the Bible. In this week’s episode, Jerrad Lopes talks with Jeff Vanderstelt, pastor of Doxa Church in Bellevue, WA, and author of Gospel Fluency, about several topics important to understanding our role as Christian dads including:
· What does gospel fluency mean?
· How should we discipline our children?
· How can we be gospel-centered husbands?
Join us as we learn how to truly become fluent in the gospel by learning to immerse ourselves so completely in the truths of the gospel that it becomes our “mother tongue.”
Host: Jerrad Lopes
Guest: Jeff Vanderstelt is the visionary leader of Saturate and the Soma Family of Churches, is the vision and teaching pastor at Doxa Church in Bellevue, WA, and author.
Mentioned during the episode:
· Gospel Fluency - Even if they want to, many Christians find it hard to talk to others about Jesus. Is it possible this difficulty is because we're trying to speak a language we haven't actually spent time practicing? To become fluent in a new language, you must immerse yourself in it until you actually start to think about life through it.

We often judge our relationship with God based on how close or how far we feel from Him. But what about those times when you don’t feel either either? If we don’t feel that same wide-eyed and enthusiastic passion for God, does it mean something is wrong? Join host Jerrad Lopes as he discusses how our walk with God can become quiet, steady in the everyday and become less about feelings and more about commitment. When the passion fades, faithfulness takes over. A gospel-centered man shows up every day for Jesus because that is what Jesus did for us.

Chuck Swindoll once wrote, “I know of no other single practice in the Christian life more rewarding, practically speaking, than memorizing Scripture…No other single exercise pays greater spiritual dividends!” In this episode, host Jerrad Lopes walks us through the practice of memorizing scripture as a foundation of spiritual life and loving scripture to the point that it is written on our hearts. He also shares with listeners a portion of a sermon by Pastor John Piper as he recites scripture from memory. Commentary is good but nothing beats the word of God!!

As men, we tend to compartmentalize everything, including our spiritual lives. But when it comes to pointing our children to Christ and His gospel, compartmentalization will never be enough. Scheduling times for reading the Bible, prayer before bed and church attendance should not be our only goal. As dads, we should be looking for everyday moments to point our children to the gospel. Join host Jerrad Lopes as he discusses how a father/son outing for frozen yogurt, with his son Elijah, became an opportunity to talk to him about God’s direction for Christians to take care of the needy. If you struggle with how to illustration to your children the relevance of Bible teaching in “real life,” you won’t want to miss this episode.

The concept of “dying out to self” can be found throughout scripture and it expresses the true essence of the Christian life. God often will bring us into situations that provide us a deeper understanding of truly giving up on our own wants and needs and focusing instead on pouring our lives into furthering the gospel of Christ. In this episode, host Jerrad Lopes discusses his family’s journey into becoming foster parents, the crazy emotions that have come along with their first placement, a 2-year-old little girl, and the insight it has given him into the importance of faithfully leading his family to Jesus by stepping outside his comfort zone and dying to self. When you set aside your own ambition and instead focus on furthering the gospel in your own family “congregation,” you might just change the world!

The scriptures tell us to go and teach all nations and make them disciples. Many Christians sit back and let others shoulder this commitment, viewing outreach as the responsibility of those in the church who are paid to be ministers. But there is no such thing as a professional Christian. Join host Jerrad Lopes as he discusses how God has called each of us all to be missionaries. From the investment banker to the school janitor, each of us should enter our homes and workplace with the goal of bringing God’s will into that space. Discipleship may look different for each person but one truth remains the same, our designated mission field is wherever we woke up.

Husbands are called to be the spiritual leaders for their family’s but when you don’t feel close to God it can be hard to be the spiritual leader that your wife and kids want you to be. Many Christian men find their relationship with Christ to be a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows. Just as the children of Israel served God with all their heart one minute and built a golden calf to worship the next, our closeness to God at times seems to ebb and flow. As Christian dads, we aren't trying to raise "moral" kids, we are trying to raise disciples who love Jesus. We are God’s conduit for teaching our children how to live a life pleasing to him but remember actions speak louder than words. Kids are always watching and waiting to see if our words line up with our actions. Teaching our kids is one of the most amazing and important tasks God has given us but it’s not always easy. Join Jerrad Lopes as he offers up three practical ways to point your kids to the love of Jesus through your actions. It’s time to be a more intentional disciple maker with your kids, they are watching.

Whatever you're doing today. Don't forget these two truths. First, whatever you find your identity in, it will fail you. As men, it’s easy for us to find our identity in our work instead of in God where it should be. No matter how good or bad you are at something, there is nothing you can do that can make God love or delight in you more. Remember you are fully known and fully loved by God. Second, all the things you hope will fulfill you, will fail you. Chase after your dreams but find satisfaction in Christ alone.

Your family are the most important people in your life. Your love for them knows no limits. But time and time again you find yourself getting angry with them and don’t know why. The first thing to understand is anger is never the first emotion. There is always something else that triggers an angry response. There is a primary emotion that is trying to remain hidden. In this episode, Jerrad Lopes will delve into the underlying causes of anger and challenge us to look deeper. The biggest question that Christian parent’s ask themselves is, how do we protect our kids from the junk of this world? It’s not easy and nearly impossible to protect our children from all the junk of the world. We can set boundaries to help limit their exposure but more importantly we should take the time to teach them that temptation is sin trying to satisfy our souls in a way only Christ can. In this episode, Jerrad Lopes relays how he and his wife dealt with his young son’s experience of seeing a scantily clad woman on a magazine cover during a trip to Walmart and challenges us as fathers/husbands to create more space for Christ in our own lives by removing temptation.

You can try and convince anyone that you are passionate about Jesus, but your checkbook and calendar always prove what you're most passionate about. What you make the center of your life, will become your treasure; what you value most. A marriage just starting out often seem close to perfection. But as the trials of life happen and two imperfect people try and build a life together, we as husbands can lose sight of the fact that God has given us a gift in our wives. She was created to be a faithful helper, supporter and partner. Saying you’re on the same team is more than a cliché, and despite feeling at times like you're on different teams, there is a deeper reason why marriages often attract opposite personalities. In this episode, Jerrad Lopes will discuss God’s purpose for marriage and how many of us enter into marriage with the wrong premise that our wives were created to make us happy. If you find yourself struggling against your wife or have allowed bitterness to creep into your marriage, don’t miss this episode!
