Peptides have become a hot topic in the fitness and recovery world, but what's the truth behind the hype? In this revealing conversation, special guest Marissa Liza, a licensed acupuncturist @allpointsacu who's been taking the peptide BPC-157 for the past month, explores her firsthand experience and the science behind this trending compound.
BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound) is a synthetic peptide derived from a protein found naturally in the stomach. While animal studies suggest promising benefits for tissue repair, inflammation reduction, and even gut health, human clinical research remains limited.
We dig deep into the mechanisms that make BPC-157 potentially valuable for athletes and anyone dealing with nagging injuries – from its ability to stimulate angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation) to its potential role in accelerating recovery. We also discuss important concerns, including its regulatory status, safety considerations, and the quality control issues that come with any unregulated compound.
Whether you're an athlete looking for an edge in recovery, someone dealing with chronic pain, or simply curious about cutting-edge wellness approaches, this conversation offers valuable perspectives on the risk-benefit analysis of peptide therapy.
In this episode of Botox and Burpees, host Sam Rhee invites Dr. Lawrence Tong, a renowned plastic surgeon from Toronto, to discuss the tragic passing of 31-year-old Brazilian influencer Ana Bárbara Buhr Buldrini @anabmusi following cosmetic surgeries traveling from Mozambique to Istanbul, Turkey.
They explore how the transactional nature of trading surgical procedures for social media exposure potentially compromised standard safety protocols from allegedly partying with the surgeon before surgery to operating late at night and possibly ignoring basic safety measures like NPO status.
The conversation delves deep into what makes cosmetic surgery safe – proper patient preparation, medication disclosure, facility standards, and the risks of multiple procedures. Both surgeons emphasize that while excellent doctors exist worldwide, patients must conduct thorough due diligence when seeking treatment abroad.
Whether you're considering cosmetic surgery at home or abroad, this episode provides vital information to help you make informed decisions that prioritize safety over cost. Remember - if a surgical deal seems too good to be true, corners are likely being cut somewhere, and the price may ultimately be your safety.
The battle against premature aging begins with a single, crucial step—applying sunscreen daily. But with countless options flooding the market, how do you select one that's not only effective but also something you'll actually use consistently?
Two seasoned plastic surgeons, Dr. Sam Rhee and Dr. Lawrence Tong @yorkvilleplasticsurgery, cut through the noise with clarity that only comes from years of treating facial aging. Unlike many "dermatologist-recommended" lists that rarely consider practical usability, these surgeons deliver straightforward guidance grounded in both science and real-world application.
We dive deep into the differences between mineral and chemical sunscreens, exploring how UVA rays (the aging culprits) penetrate clouds and glass, silently damaging your skin even on overcast days or during your daily commute. As Dr. Tong soberly notes, "Once you get beyond a certain amount of sun damage, you cannot reverse that. No surgery, no lasers, no creams, no peels can fix that."
Beyond reviewing traditional favorites like La Roche-Posay and Elta MD, the conversation ventures into emerging alternatives from Asian and European markets that utilize advanced UV filters without the endocrine-disrupting concerns of conventional chemical options. These innovative formulations promise the cosmetic elegance people crave without compromising protection or environmental safety.
The best sunscreen is simply the one you'll use consistently. Whether you're bothered by white cast, concerned about chemical absorption, or seeking something that works seamlessly under makeup, this comprehensive guide helps you navigate options aligned with your personal priorities.
Ready to transform your relationship with sun protection? Listen now to discover how this small daily habit creates profound long-term benefits for your skin's health and appearance.

Creatine stands as the most heavily researched supplement in the fitness world, yet myths and questions about its use persist. What exactly happens when this natural compound enters your body? Who should take it? Is it truly safe?

But creatine's benefits extend far beyond the weight room. For perimenopausal women, creatine offers unexpected advantages, potentially counteracting hormonal-related muscle and bone loss while supporting cognitive function.
We also tackle practical concerns: Which form works best? When should you take it? How do you choose a quality product? Is loading necessary? Cultural identity exists in the spaces between languages, generations, and countries. When Sasha joins her father for this candid conversation, they unravel what it means to grow up Korean American through their distinct generational lenses.
Sasha, a third-generation Korean American with suprising Korean reading and speaking abilities, proudly embraces her heritage while acknowledging its complexities. Her father takes a different stance—having consciously distanced himself from certain Korean traditions he found restrictive growing up. Their dialogue opens a fascinating window into how immigrant families navigate cultural preservation across generations.
The conversation travels through unexpected territory: how the Korean language itself encodes hierarchy, making it impossible for children to argue with parents as equals; the traditional family genealogy book that's meant to pass through sons, not daughters; and the delicate balance of maintaining cultural touchpoints like birthday celebrations and food traditions while letting go of more restrictive practices.
What emerges is a thoughtful exploration of belonging. Is being "Korean enough" about language fluency, cultural knowledge, or something deeper? How do families decide which traditions to preserve and which to modify? When Sasha shares her plans for raising future children, she reveals how each generation must create their own relationship with heritage—keeping what resonates while making space for new cultural identities to emerge.
Whether you're navigating your own cultural hyphenation or curious about how immigrant identities evolve across generations, this episode offers a warm, honest look at the beautiful complexity of Korean American experience. What happens as an athlete when your own body becomes its own worst enemy? In this raw and powerful conversation, CrossFit athlete Laura "Legit" Romanek @mcskins opens up about her journey with rheumatoid arthritis, a diagnosis that threatened to redefine everything about her athletic identity.
From waking up with a mysteriously swollen wrist on Open Quarterfinals day to navigating a complex web of medications, Laura shares the physical and emotional challenges of living with an unpredictable autoimmune disease. Her story reveals the frustrating paradox of an "invisible" illness – how someone can perform bar muscle-ups and heavy lifts one day, then struggle to open a door the next.
Laura's brutal honesty about her condition cuts through common misconceptions about chronic illness. She doesn't sugarcoat the reality of flare-ups. Yet her approach to living with RA challenges conventional wisdom about chronic disease management. Rather than completely overhauling her lifestyle or letting her diagnosis become her identity, she follows a philosophy of "do everything you can when you can do it."
The conversation delves into the complex relationship between stress and autoimmune disease, the grief of losing physical capacity, and the challenge of maintaining relationships when energy must be carefully rationed. Through it all, Laura's resilience shines through – not in a sanitized, inspirational way, but in her unflinching determination to remain herself despite everything her body throws at her.
Whether you're living with chronic illness, supporting someone who is, or simply interested in stories of human resilience, Laura's journey offers valuable perspective on what it means to adapt without surrendering your core identity. S05E105 Navigating High School and the College Admissions Journey with Nicholas Rhee
Ever wonder what it's really like to navigate the high-stakes world of college applications as a teenager today? In this family conversation, host Sam Rhee sits down with his 18-year-old son Nicholas to unpack the reality behind the high school experience and college admissions process.
Nicholas shares his journey from elementary school math programs to becoming a Duke University-bound senior, offering a refreshingly honest perspective on the challenges and triumphs along the way. The conversation delves into how early academic habits formed through programs like Kumon created a foundation for later success, despite the resistance most children naturally feel toward extra work. As Nicholas explains, these formative experiences made achievements feel "obtainable through enough practice and prep," establishing a growth mindset that served him well through high school.
The discussion tackles several universal struggles facing today's students – from managing screen time, to maintaining healthy sleep patterns during academically demanding periods. The discussion also explores the emotional dynamics of sibling relationships, and the importance of time management and study habits.
Perhaps most valuable is Nicholas's candid account of the emotional rollercoaster of college applications. After receiving a deferral from Duke during Early Decision, he shares how he maintained perspective during the agonizing months of waiting: "It's not like it's the end of the world... it just means things didn't go your way this one time." His advice to fellow students focuses on "de-polarizing" the process, applying to multiple schools, and remembering that no single admission decision defines your worth or potential.
Whether you're a parent supporting a teenager through this journey, a student in the midst of the process, or simply curious about how today's generation navigates these critical transitions, this conversation offers invaluable insights into maintaining balance during one of life's most stressful yet formative experiences.
College admissions - the high-stakes game that dominates the lives of high school students and their families. In this episode, my guest is my spouse Susan Rhee @susanrhee as we unpack how our two children successfully navigated their way to Duke University, despite both facing deferrals in the early decision round.
Susan shares the rollercoaster of emotions we experienced as parents - from the crushing disappointment of initial deferrals to the eventual triumph of acceptance. Together, we candidly discuss the strategies that worked for our family: did it help when our kids did test prep early after freshman year? How important was developing consistent personal narratives through extracurriculars? We also discuss the importance of attending a school that provided individualized attention and leadership opportunities.
We also take a behind-the-scenes look at actual Duke applications. Through FERPA, our daughter obtained her college application review, revealing how admissions officers numerically score different aspects of applications and what factors truly matter in the selection process. This insider perspective demystifies how elite universities streamline the evaluation process of the thousands of qualified applicants they receive annually.
Beyond tactics, we explore the psychological dimensions of college admissions - how to support your child when they don't get into their dream school, why resilience matters more than acceptance letters, and the importance of having backup schools students genuinely love. The conversation serves as both practical guide and emotional support for families navigating this challenging journey.
Whether you're a parent of a high school student or someone fascinated by the complex world of elite college admissions, this episode offers honest insights about what works, what doesn't, and why the college your child attends is ultimately just the first paragraph of the foreword of their life story. Have you been through the college admissions process? We'd love to hear your experiences and strategies!
The way we've been taught to treat athletic injuries could be completely wrong. In this eye-opening conversation with certified athletic trainer Kayla Andrews @kay__wellness, we challenge the decades-old RICE protocol (rest, ice, compression, elevation) that has dominated injury management since 1978.
Kayla reveals why immediate, extensive icing might actually impede your body's natural healing processes and how complete rest can lead to longer recovery times and poorer outcomes. Instead, she introduces modern recovery frameworks like MEAT, PEACE, and LOVE that emphasize appropriate early movement, controlled loading, and allowing the inflammatory response to do its critical work in tissue repair.
What's particularly fascinating is how counterintuitive some of this advice feels. We've been conditioned to think that an injury means stopping all activity, icing constantly, and taking anti-inflammatories around the clock. Yet Kayla explains why this approach may be robbing our bodies of the signals and resources they need to heal properly.
Through practical examples of ankle sprains, hamstring pulls, and shoulder injuries, we explore what "appropriate movement" really means - finding that sweet spot where discomfort is tolerable but movement is possible. Kayla also shares valuable insights about compression (never sleep with it!), the power of mindset in recovery, and why working your uninjured side can dramatically benefit your injured side.
Whether you're an athlete, coach, or someone who occasionally tweaks something at the gym, this conversation will transform how you approach injury management. Listen now to learn why "movement is medicine" and how you can take a more active, effective role in your own recovery process.
Does yoga have a place in a CrossFit athlete's training regimen? In this eye-opening conversation with yoga instructor Kristen Fazio @kristenfazyoga, we explore the surprising synergy between these seemingly opposite disciplines.
Kristen, who brings an athletic approach to her yoga instruction, explains why mobility matters tremendously for CrossFit performance. Most athletes struggle with depth in squats, overhead positions, and various other foundational movements—not because they lack strength, but because they lack the necessary mobility in their joints. Through her years of teaching yoga to athletes, she's witnessed remarkable improvements in performance, recovery, and injury prevention.
The conversation reveals how yoga offers far more than just flexibility. We discuss how practicing balance poses develops crucial stabilizer muscles that protect joints during heavy lifts. We explore how controlled breathing techniques translate directly to maintaining composure during challenging workouts. And perhaps most surprisingly, we uncover how yoga's mindfulness aspects create mental resilience that carries from the mat to the competition floor.
"CrossFit training itself is not conducive to mobility," Fazio points out, highlighting why supplemental mobility work is essential for long-term athletic development.
For those intimidated by yoga's spiritual reputation or concerned about "not being flexible enough," Fazio offers practical advice on getting started, finding the right style of yoga for your needs, and integrating it effectively into a strength-focused schedule. Whether you're looking to improve performance, recover better between workouts, or ensure longevity in your fitness journey, this conversation will transform how you think about complementary training.
Ready to roll out your mat? Listen now and discover why some of the most competitive CrossFit athletes are turning to yoga as their secret performance enhancer.
The secretive world of Wall Street recruitment has always fascinated outsiders – but few understand just how early the talent pipeline begins. Host Sam Rhee chats with his daughter, Sasha Rhee, about her journey and experiences in securing a summer internship at an investment banking firm. Sasha, a sophomore at Duke University, walks us through the intensive networking process, the technical preparation, and the strategic self-marketing needed to stand out in a sea of qualified candidates.
She also compares investment banking with asset management, discusses the rigorous interview process, and emphasizes the value of genuine interest and soft skills. The episode highlights the importance of making early career decisions and the challenges that come with them, providing a detailed look into the competitive world of investment banking from the perspective of a young aspirant.
Most tellingly, Sasha reflects that the grueling process serves as its own filter: "If you don't like recruiting, you're not going to make it in banking."
Whether you're considering a career in finance, parenting a college student, or simply curious about how Wall Street shapes its next generation, this conversation offers valuable insights into an often opaque world where career trajectories are determined remarkably early. Subscribe now to hear more thought-provoking discussions at the intersection of career, family, and personal growth.
What happens when you miss your competitive goals despite giving your all? In the world of CrossFit, where success is measured in seconds and pounds, missing qualification cuts can feel devastating—especially when you made it the year before.
This raw, honest conversation with @crossfitbison athlete Kristen Torres @kristenan explores the emotional rollercoaster that follows disappointment in competitive fitness. We unpack the experience of watching leaderboard rankings drop from the top percentile to outside qualification as scores came in, the mental battle of deciding whether to redo workouts, and the surprising reactions when realizing dreams won't be fulfilled this season.
The CrossFit Open 2025 brought dramatic changes, cutting qualification percentages from 25% to just 2% for age groups, leaving many accomplished athletes on the outside looking in. We analyze each workout in detail—from the lung-burning burpee/lunge combinations to the technical gymnastics and heavy lifting challenges—examining where things went right and wrong in our execution.
Kristen shares powerful insights about finding balance between competitive drive and actually enjoying life, revealing her training schedule, recovery methods, and the mindset that allows her to find joy in every workout regardless of outcomes. Her approach to supporting friends who qualified instead of dwelling on personal disappointment offers a masterclass in sportsmanship and community values.

How do you reframe disappointment into opportunity? Join us for this candid exploration of resilience in the face of missed goals and discover why the journey matters more than the destination.

Also, the start of a weekly thankful at the end of the podcast.
Another Botox trend where people are changing not their facial appearance, but how their bodies look. Should we be doing this?
One of the latest Botox trends is called "Prejuvenation TOX." WTF is this? Let's talk about it.
You are a woman who never had weight issues before. Suddenly you hit your 40s and that weight creep becomes relentless even though you haven't changed anything. The struggle is real. A recent Wall Street Journal article discusses why the midlife weight management can be harder for women than men. What can be done about it?
Paulina Porizkova @paulinaporizkov supermodel is now 58 years old. And she claims she's "tweak free," using hashtags #nobotox #nofiller #nosurgery #nointerventions. But is she really?
Paulina Porizkova @paulinaporizkov supermodel is now 58 years old. And she's posted a lot about aging and self-worth. Should we be emulating her? Maybe. Maybe not.
There's one reason why I do what I do as a surgeon. Three patients recently reminded me of this.
"A person who makes few mistakes makes little progress." - Bryant McGill.
Well, I have certainly made a LOT of progress then. I hope to talk on this podcast about some of the more interesting mistakes I have made. Here's my first example of a mistake during a breast augmentation procedure.
Of course, life never goes exactly how you expect it will. How will you make the most of it? I talk about this year's college application process in our family.
S03E39 THE ATHLETE I ADMIRE THE MOST
Last week I talked to an athlete at the gym and I decided I admire this person the most, and I wanted to talk about it.
How do we feel when someone makes us question our self worth, our physical attractiveness, or damages our confidence? As a plastic surgeon we have a unique responsibility to our patients, who are often at their most vulnerable when they come to us for our opinions.
Part 2 Last week was about a patient whose self-esteem got dinged, and this week is other situations in the gym and elsewhere where this can also occur.
How do we feel when someone makes us question our self worth, our physical attractiveness, or damages our confidence? As a plastic surgeon we have a unique responsibility to our patients, who are often at their most vulnerable when they come to us for our opinions.
Part 1 discusses a situation I encountered last week with a patient whose self-esteem got dinged, and future episodes will talk about other situations in the gym and elsewhere where this can also occur.
The new drug, Ozempic (semaglutide) and its related medications Wegovy and Mounjaro are ushering in a new era of seemingly safe appetite reduction and weight loss with no need for willpower and mental effort.
As more patients who are being prescribed these expensive medications off label and speculation grows for every Hollywood star (or even acquaintance) who suddenly appears thinner, what does the future hold for our society in regards to what is the new normal for skinny?
As a plastic surgeon, sometimes the hardest thing to change about someone is their mind, not their physical body. How do you help people around you grapple with their negative self-image if what bothers them physically is something they cannot change?
How do you go about encouraging others to get fit? Here are some thoughts about helping those around you.

You would think Annie Thorisdottir and Katrin Davidsdottir - the DOTTIRS of ICELAND and the Fittest Women in the World would have no problems with their self images, right? But perhaps it is not so surprising that elite athletes themselves grapple with how they look all the time.
This podcast episode discusses their recent episode of their podcast @DOTTIR, titled "What Should The Fittest Women on Earth look like?"
How can we relate to their struggles and learn how to deal with our own self-image challenges?

"She literally has man muscles." So starts the article "CrossFit, "Man Muscles," and the Feminine Ideal" written by @brittney_s Senior Writer at Crossfit.
What is the "Feminine Ideal?" Are CrossFit "Man Muscles" compatible with that ideal? Let's take five minutes to think about this.

How can teaching surgery possibly be related to CrossFit coaching? If you have never been athletic or a coach before, then drawing on your experience teaching surgery can result in some interesting comparisons to the challenges of coaching CrossFit athletes.

Special guest Stacey Marino is a rising CrossFit star, but the ascent was not without many challenges. Coming off her best season ever, Stacey finished in her age group 34-39 last year 10th at @wodapalooza, 2nd at @_legendschampionship, and narrowly missed going to the @crossfitgames by four spots. With her new coach @mattdlugos of @underdogsathletics, a well known elite athlete in his own right, Stacey has revamped her training and mindset. Fresh from a win at the 1st Phorm Monster Games @themonstergames in Joplin, Missouri, Stacey is looking for even more success this year.
In addition to talking about her successes, Stacey talks frankly about the challenges, including an eating disorder from childhood and related health issues, as well as dealing with negative body images and self doubt. Stacey has put her best foot (and the rest of her body!) forward recently with @jfzphotography in a series of photos for the Body Positive Project.
If that was not enough, Stacey owns CrossFit affiliate @crossfit201 in Oakland NJ as well as @201nutrition, a nutrition coaching business. Find out more about how Stacey juggles her many roles and yet is poised for even more success in the sport of CrossFit in the future.
If we constantly see "beautiful" images on social media, does that change what we think is "beauty" in plastic surgery?
We conclude our deep dive into social media and plastic surgery by looking at what is "normal" and "beautiful," and how social media influences what we think and want.

A growing number of patients are traveling to get their cosmetic plastic surgery procedures done. Whether overseas or more recently to surgery centers in Florida, patients see fantastic pictures on social media, travel for surgery, and then return home - sometimes with problems that their local surgeons are forced to address. Is traveling for surgery safe?
Our latest episode is with special guest @bajajplasticsurgery Dr. Anu Bajaj, MD MBA FACS. She is a board certified plastic surgeon in Oklahoma City. Dr. Bajaj is a past Chair of the Ethics Committee of ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons) who recently wrote an article "The rise of domestic medical tourism - and the ethical questions raised." (link in bio)
We examine the complex problem of domestic medical tourism, the issues about educating patients, and the role social media plays in leading (or sometimes misleading) patients into choices which may result in problems.

In the world of plastic surgery, Dr. Lloyd Hoffman needs no introduction. In 1987 at 30 years of age, Dr. Hoffman became the youngest chief of a plastic surgery program in history. After a long and distinguished chairmanship at Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan, Dr. Hoffman was an extremely successful private plastic surgeon on the Upper East Side for many more years.
Dr. Hoffman recently returned to Columbia University Medical Center as an Associate Professor, resuming teaching responsibilities as well as working with the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of New York (https://www.laserskinsurgery.com/dermatologists/dr-lloyd-hoffman/)
Beloved by his residents, honored by his peers, Dr. Hoffman continues to share his wisdom and life experiences. Having managed over 15 thousand patients and counting, it was truly an honor to have shared some time with one of the true stalwarts in the plastic surgery world.
(This long-delayed podcast episode had production issues, which you will note. After wrestling with them sporadically for several months with limited ability, I decided not to wait any longer. My apologies for any technical issues and I hope they do not detract from Dr. Hoffman's fascinating thoughts.)
This podcast episode features guest Dr. Jess Ting. Jess and I go way back. We were classmates back in the 90s at Columbia University's medical school, Columbia's Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Jess was valedictorian of the class, and as you will hear, he has continued on to great achievements.
Dr. Ting grew up in New York City and attended the Juilliard School, studying the double bass. After going to medical school, he also went into plastic surgery.
Dr. Ting is an Assistant Professor at Mount Sinai's Icahn School of Medicine, where he has headed the groundbreaking Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery. Dr. Ting and his team have performed more than two thousand operations, making it one of the busiest centers in the country.
For this work, Jess was recently featured in an award winning documentary, called Born to Be, directed by Tania Cypriano, which takes a close look at how his work impacts the lives of his patients as a pioneering gender-affirming surgeon, as well as his own transformation as a surgeon. More information about the documentary can be found at borntobefilm.com.
Jess talks about growing up in New York, his love for music, how he was able to achieve his successes in life, and his experiences with transgender medicine and surgery.
Tim Carroll is a high level CrossFit athlete (former 4x Regionals athlete), former professional GRID league captain, and owner of CrossFit 908 (now 908 Athletics) Berkeley Heights NJ and 908 Central, Westfield NJ. In addition, June 2012 he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, making him one of over 25 million Americans with this health challenge.
Right now there is a lot of controversy surrounding Crossfit the company, and particularly the owner, Greg Glassman. This interview was recorded a few weeks ago, but hearing my guest Tiim Carroll’s thoughts and opinions before the Glassman controversy shows how critical it is to stick to your fundamental guiding principles for anyone involved in Crossfit or in any business.
We will always face challenges in our lives. When you listen to Tim, you have no doubt he has already faced his share of challenges and will continue to do so with great success in the future. I have great respect for Tim Carroll, and it was a pleasure to talk to him about accomplishments in his life, his health, and his business.
