✅ Bio Punam Kaji is Assistant General Counsel at Ben E. Keith Company, a food and alcohol distributor. Her practice focuses on employment and litigation matters for the Company, which has about 5000 employees working in 14 states. She is Board Certified in Labor and Employment law. Punam’s expertise comes from years of counseling and litigating employment law matters for clients while working at Haynes and Boone, LLP in the firm’s Fort Worth, Dallas, and Houston offices. Punam received her Juris Doctor from SMU Dedman School of Law and her Bachelor’s degree in government and Plan II from the University of Texas at Austin. Punam has been recognized for her legal work as a 2019 Top Lawyer in Fort Worth Magazine, and she was a Finalist for a Corporate Counsel award from the ACC-DFW in 2019. When Punam is not handling labor and employment issues, she serves her community. She is currently on the Diversity Committee of the Tarrant County Bar Association. She was recently appointed to the State Bar of Texas Diversity Taskforce. She is the past Chair of the Asian Pacific Interest Section of the State Bar of Texas. She has served on the board of the South Asian Bar Association of Houston (SABA Houston) and as a committee chairperson of the Dallas Asian American Bar Association (DAABA).
Punam’s commitment to local bar associations has been recognized on various occasions - In 2013, she was recognized as DAABA’s Member of the Year. In 2016 she received the Outstanding Public Service Award by SABA Houston. She has served on the board of various non-profit organizations in Houston and Dallas. She is currently on the board of New Leaders Council Dallas as the Mentorship Chair, and she is on the board of WiseUp TX, a nonprofit for South Asian Texans to become more engaged citizens and a host of their podcast. Punam regularly speaks at conferences and other venues regarding workplace issues, employment law, and on diversity and inclusion. There was disturbing news reports a few weeks ago about the lack of COVID-19 protections and inadequate medical care, including a report that a number of women detained at the Irwin detention center in Ocilla, Georgia were unnecessarily subject to hysterectomies. These allegations are the clearest examples to date of the horrors of our immigration detention system—a system that perpetuates racial violence and undermines access to justice, while providing billions of dollars in profit annually to private prison companies. DHS oversight bodies and Congress must launch full investigations into these claims immediately and those responsible must be held accountable. We must not turn a blind eye to the impact that our immigration detention system has on individual lives.

Our guest Richard Celestin operates his own law firm as a criminal defense attorney since 2014 and his consulting company since 2009. On June 3, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison amended the charges against Chauvin to include unintentional second-degree murder under the felony murder doctrine, alleging that Chauvin killed Floyd in the course of committing assault in the third degree. 📒 Show Notes 📒 STATEMENT OF PROBABLE CAUSE 5/29/2020 1️⃣ "On May 25, 2020, someone called 911 and reported that a man bought merchandise from Cup Foods at 3759 Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota with a counterfeit $20 bill. 2️⃣ At 8:08 p.m., Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) Officers Thomas Lane and J.A. Kueng arrived with their body worn cameras (BWCs) activated and running....Once handcuffed, Mr. Floyd became compliant and walked with Officer Lane to the sidewalk and sat on the ground at Officer Lane's direction... 3️⃣ Officers Kueng and Lane stood Mr. Floyd up and attempted to walk Mr. Floyd to their squad car at 8:14 p.m. Mr. Floyd stiffened up, fell to the ground, and told the officers he was claustrophobic... 4️⃣While standing outside the car, Mr. Floyd began saying and repeating that he could not breathe. The defendant went to the passenger side and tried to get Mr. Floyd into the car...The defendant pulled Mr. Floyd out of the passenger side of the squad car at 8:19:38 p.m. and Mr. Floyd went to the ground face down and still handcuffed. Kueng held Mr. Floyd's back and Lane held his legs. The defendant placed his left knee in the area of Mr. Floyd's head and neck. Mr. Floyd said, "I can't breathe" multiple times and repeatedly said, "Mama" and "please,"... 5️⃣ At 8:24:24, Mr. Floyd stopped moving. At 8:25:31 the video appears to show Mr. Floyd ceasing to breathe or speak. Lane said, "want to roll him on his side." Kueng checked Mr. Floyd's right wrist for a pulse and said, "I couldn't find one." .. 6️⃣ At 8:27:24, the defendant removed his knee from Mr. Floyd's neck. An ambulance and emergency medical personnel arrived..The defendant had his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds in total. Two minutes and 53 seconds of this was after Mr. Floyd was non-responsive. Police are trained that this type of restraint with a subject in a prone position is inherently dangerous. Defendant is in custody."
