What is mental health care provision like for the police?
Are psychologists enough to ensure the wellbeing of police officers?
Why do we need peer support in policing? What can fellow officers provide that professional psychologists cannot?
"The gap was we found many police officers were a bit reluctant to engage in these services due to trust issues, they were worried about confidentiality, but mostly worried about the idea that their therapists would not understand what policing was really like. They didn't think that the therapist would understand what it's like to be a cop."
"Peer support fills a niche in the support continuum that cannot be filled in any other way" "The difference is the power of the peer.
The difference is a police officer speaking to someone who he or she feels has done the job, walked in their shoes, knows what it's like to confront the stressors of especially modern policing in you know today's tumultuous world. So, this is why I'm a strong advocate of peer support and I've coordinated and supervised and trained peer support teams for several decades and continue to do so and encourage other departments to do so as well."
"What we have found in the last several years with the best statistics we have available and again, I'll caution that these statistics are very difficult to develop, is that the number of suicides in the American policing profession has exceeded the number of police officers killed by accident and by felonious assault combined in the last several years."

From Issue 1 of the Police Science Dr Magazine
"I believe evidence-based policing is a trending topic and we should follow this path because it is necessary for you to have strong evidence to support our decision-makers and once we have academia beside us it's really important, because we are not alone and we start in this process right now. This is something really new here in Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro specifically. I don't see any initiative so far, so what we are trying to do is to bring academia closer to the police to work together and to investigate together, to study together, to discuss. I think this is the path that once we have better informed decisions based on academic evidence, it will help us a great deal, I believe."
"We have a strong problem here concerning drug dealers, concerning illegal firearms, so we need to better investigate how these firearms, how drugs arrive here in Brazil, specifically in Rio de Janeiro, because we don't have international borders, we are on the coast, we are bordering the Atlantic Ocean, so borders in Brazil are far away from my home town, my home state, and we don't produce drugs, we don't have coca plantations, we don't produce firearms but we have a lot of problems with drugs and firearms here, so we need to study more in depth what's happening and take some actions based on informed academic decisions."
"It's really a huge problem, because we have huge borders and our borders are porous. For you to have a rough idea, Brazil has 17,000 km of land borders and we share borders in Brazil with 10 different countries in South America, among these 10 we have Colombia, Peru and Bolivia, the three major producers of coca in the world. So, cocaine arrives pretty easily in Brazil, just in terms of comparison, the United States South border with Mexico has roughly 3,000 km of land borders and Brazil has 17,000 km of land borders with 10 different countries, and three major producers of coca, so just considering these numbers you can understand how huge is our challenge here in Brazil to control our borders, to avoid international trafficking, to counter international organised criminals is really huge problem."

There is a way in which victims of domestic abuse can obtain vital police assistance within minutes of their first call, rather than waiting for physical attendance, sometimes until the next day. And they don't risk neighbours talking about a police car being parked outside the house, which could eventually get back to the perpetrator.

Easier Said Than Done webinar - Video Response
The time it takes to get a response from police is a key determinant of public satisfaction and police performance. In recent years, forces have experimented with using video-call technology to connect callers to police officers more quickly. Rigorous evaluations have shown it to be much, much faster and popular with victims of crime. But like anything involving technology in a fast moving environment, it's not easy to get it up and running. In this episode of ESTD, we'll talk to people who have been at the forefront of the early pilots and their follow ups. We'll discuss the potential problems and solutions on the implementation journey and, as usual, give everyone the opportunity to ask the panel questions directly.

The Society of Evidence-Based Policing and Police Science Dr are hosting a webinar with a panel of experts who have implemented focused deterrence strategies within their police force
First of the SEBP & Police Science Dr webinar series on how to implement research projects or set up trials, studies and initiatives.
Today, we're speaking to a panel of experts about how to set up a Deferred Prosecution program. If you are with us live, you can post questions into the comments that we can put to the panel.
Deferred prosecution is an alternative to traditional criminal justice processes where prosecution is delayed, typically dependent on the offender meeting specific conditions or completing an intervention program. If conditions are met successfully, prosecution is dropped.

Although this very popular interview has nothing to do with Christmas, now can be a very challenging time for many.
Here, DCI Brammer and I spoke about how important mental health is both for us as individuals but also to the people we love and serve.
If we don't look after the inner mental and emotional workings of our police, they cannot function and keep us safe.

Live interview with Police Chief Cory Darling, of Sunriver PD, Oregon, USA.
Cory managed to cut down his police department's sick days to one third and reduce insurance claims by half, "simply" by addressing the mental health of his officers.
If you would like to know how he did that, and how this could perhaps be done in your own police force, make sure you watch this interview.
Ginny McKenna, police stress expert, and Dr Susanne Knabe-Nicol aka Police Science Dr, speak to Cory on how he improved his officers' wellbeing and saved the force thousands of dollars!
Enrolment closes today for 'Emergency Stress Pit Stop', an online coaching program by police stress expert Ginny McKenna

You will learn how to control your stress response in critical situations, be they at work or in life generally, how to be able to calm yourself down, stop anxiety and negative thoughts, and how to get your life back.
External to your organisation, confidential, specifically tailored to law enforcement and emergency services.
Professor Alison is Director of the National Unit for Critical Incident Decision-Making and leads the University of Liverpool’s Psychological Resource Network and Chair in Forensic and Investigative Psychology at the university's Institute of Population Health.
He has done a lot of work in critical incident decision-making and interviews of high-value detainees (e.g. terrorism suspects). He developed a unique interviewing technique that embeds motivational interviewing, which has its background in addiction therapy, to create a safe space for guilty suspects to open up about what they've done.

Gabrielle Salfati is a Professor of Psychology and the Director of the Investigative Psychology Research Unit at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Her 25+ year career to date has been focused on serving the law enforcement and mental health practitioner community.
She has developed and spearheaded initiatives to prioritize best practice in translation of scientific evidence to be applicable in practice through the development of practitioner-focused training, and trains law enforcement officers, crime analysts, forensic psychologists and other criminal justice and mental health professionals.
She is part of the first group of people who emerged within the new field of Investigative Psychology, and was instrumental in its development as an international research field on the empirical analysis of violent criminal behavior. Her main areas of expertise relates to how psychology is applied to police investigations, in particular with reference to behavioral crime scene analysis, offender profiling, and linking serial crime. All of her work has focused on developing evidence-based practice tools for law enforcement and the crime analysis field, specifically as it pertains to behavioral analysis, has been done in collaboration with law enforcement agencies internationally.

The legend of investigative interviews himself, Professor Ray Bull, was interviewed live by Police Science Dr Susanne Knabe-Nicol .
Ray helped develop the 'PEACE' method of investigative interviewing in 1991 and very recently in putting together a UN guidance document on investigative interviewing. He's also ranked in the top 4% of scientists in the world.

Ex-police officer Gareth Keyte was a very happy and successful police officer - a Public Order Commander, Initial Firearms Commander and Senior Investigating Officer, until it was not the trauma of the things he saw in the community that broke him, but how he was treated by his organisation, that made him fall. He had to take time off to deal with his mental health and then had to leave the job altogether - but he was able to climb out of that hole and start a new life with the help of coaching. We speak about mental health in policing, a massive topic at the moment, and the steps you can take to ensure you don't remain stuck in a bad situation.

Interview with PC Andrew Harris, who might possibly be the UK's most effective cop!
Andrew managed to reduce violence and disorder by 70% (!) by being a uniformed presence on mental health wards that wanted more police support to protect their staff and patients.
Bedfordshire Police are working with local mental health services and these services are very cooperative with Andrew, as the project has been so incredibly effective at reducing incidents.
Andrew is approachable both to patients and staff, he enables patients to come and talk to him when they are frustrated and to talk things through rather than reacting without thinking. Andrew gets the patient to reflect on their decision-making and their behaviour, and many incidents have been prevented that way before they even took place.

Police Science Dr will interview Prof Clifford Stott, an expert in public order policing, on how best to handle large crowds, which has been a serious issue for policing around the world recently. Clifford Stott is a Professor of Social Psychology and Dean for Research in the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Keele University. He specialises in crowd psychology and has a wide-ranging interest in understanding the role of group-level dynamics in police-citizen interactions. He currently sits on the Behavioural Science sub-committee of the UK Government Scientific Advisory Group in Emergencies and co-Chairs their Policing and Security group.

LIVE interview with the amazing Ginny McKenna, who helps cops reclaim their live by guiding them through stress and trauma brought on by the job.
She gets what these officers and staff are going through, as she's walked in their police boots herself - she was a frontline police officer for over 21 years and found herself on the brink of suicide.
Today, she dedicates her life to helping those who are where she was, so that they never reach those dark places she's been.
Dr Matt Bland from Cambridge University talks about his research into domestic abuse and also the algorithms that have been created to help police predict which couples need particular attention.

This is a LIVE interview with Detective Chief Inspector Ryan Brammer, Bedfordshire Police (UK).
We talk about the changes he made as a person and as a police officer that had immediate impacts on his wellbeing and his career. He had become desensitised, fell out of love with policing and had to learn the 'softer skills' to break out of this dark place.
DCI Ryan Brammer talks about how he dug himself out of a mental and emotional low, following a breakdown with symptoms akin to a heart attack.
He used his time off work to regroup, refocus, and to do a full-scale review of himself. When he went back to work, he was functioning better than ever.
Ryan talks about the importance of working on your inner self so that you can function as a cop.

Drawing on over 30 years’ experience, Patrick argues that we need to find a new way to understand, investigate and talk about sexual crimes. He forces us all to question our own prejudices and assumptions – about both victims and perpetrators – and to question the social, criminal and judicial systems that mean that so few of these crimes ever end in convictions.

Interview with Dr Olivia Johnson, founder of the Blue Wall Institute, where she trains first responders and their families about suicide awareness and prevention, peer support, stress and anger management and leadership issues.
Dr. Johnson is a veteran of the United States Air Force, a former police officer, and published author. She holds a master’s in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Missouri, St. Louis and a doctorate in Organizational Leadership Management from the University of Phoenix, School of Advanced Studies.
Due to her perseverance in raising awareness of the issues facing our first responders, she was named the Illinois State Representative and active Board Member for the National Police Suicide Foundation. Dr. Johnson recently announced the inception of the National Law Enforcement Suicide Mortality Database™, which will track all law enforcement and correctional officer suicides and non-fatal suicide attempts.

Police Stress & How to handle it Ginny wanted to take her own life as the stress of the job as well as her working conditions made life unbearable for her. She had to leave policing for health reasons and recovery took her years, as she went about it all wrong: on her own, with no support.
She doesn't want that to happen to anyone else. She now helps police through these challenges, as she gets how difficult it is to even admit that you're struggling, when you're meant to be this strong persona in a uniform.
Ginny also provided a free training session at last week's Rapid-Fire Conference on Behavioural Science in Policing, you can watch her session here.

From the 2021 Online Conference of the Society of Evidence Based Policing
Professor Jason Roach from the Applied Criminology and Policing Centre at the University of Huddersfield presented live on 31st March:
Unless you have been inhabiting another planet for the past ten years, then you are likely to be aware of Thaler and Sunstein’s ‘nudge’ approach to encouraging us humans into making more ‘prosocial choices’ (2008). Examples include’ nudging’ to help people give up smoking and to encourage people to donate their organs when they die (the former presumably prolonging a promise to do the latter). In terms of a means by which crime might be reduced, then the uptake of nudge continues to lag behind its application in health and social policy initiatives. It is suggested here, that this is primarily because there has been little advancement in nudge thinking in a crime reduction direction, nor has it become more bespoke to policing in the same way that it has for numerous public health issues. Several ideas for how nudge thinking might be advanced, by making it more in tune with policing are presented (e.g. NUDGE-IT), along with the suggestion that by moving current thinking beyond ‘nudge’ towards a broader ‘psychology of influence’ approach, this will be more appealing to those charged with reducing crime.

This video is based on an article written by Professor David Canter: https://www.davidcanter.com/wp-conten...
It addresses the following questions: why are policing and academia so different? Why are there conflicts between the two? How can police and academics work together better?
The premise is that if both sides understand each other better, they can collaborate more effectively. There are good reasons for why the police and academia are the way they are - their objectives and pressures are very different.

How long do the effects of hotspots policing last? Simon Williams interview I'm Simon Williams and I'm currently a senior sergeant with the Western Australian police. Prior to that I was a police officer with West Midlands Police I'm Simon Williams and I'm currently a senior sergeant with the Western Australian police. Prior to that I was a police officer with West Midlands Police for nearly 16 years.
I first heard about evidence-based policing when I was running offender management teams in Birmingham. And we partnered with the University of Cambridge to deliver what was then the biggest randomised control trial and policing anywhere in the world called operation Turning Point. So operation Turning Point was a test of deferred prosecution. Of low-level or first-time offenders away from the criminal justice system. And that's what was my introduction into this concept, this thing called evidence-based policing.

Can emotional skills predict gang membership? In 2017, it was estimated by the Children’s Commissioner (2017) that over 46,000 children between the ages of 10 and 18 years are involved in gangs in the UK. Even though this problem is increasing in severity with a number of fatal stabbings having taken place in England in the last few years, psychological understanding of gang membership is currently limited (Wood & Alleyne, 2010). In an effort to alleviate this shortcoming, recent research has attempted to shed some light on the emotional risk factors of gang membership by reviewing and summarising existing research (Mallion & Wood, 2018). It is known that emotional processes guide moral reasoning (Dhingra, Debowska, Sharratt, Hyland, & Kola-Palmer, 2015), aid decision making (Modecki, Zimmer-Gembeck, & Guerra, 2017) and support behavioural regulation (Coffman, Melde, & Esbensen, 2015); And we also know that deficits in emotional competence can cause offending behaviour (e.g., Day, 2009; Ward & Nee, 2009). There has been an increasing recognition of the influence that emotional processes can have on other risk factors of offending behaviour, that is social and cognitive factors (Ward, 2017).

What is an RCT?
You’ve probably heard the term ‘RCT’ a few times, especially in the field of academic research and / or evidence-based policing. Commander Alex Murray used it a lot in his Dr IPIP interview on evidence-based policing. But what is an RCT? In essence, it is the most robust and reliable way of carrying out research that tests something.
RCT stands for randomised-controlled trial. Now, you might think the terms ‘random’ and ‘controlled’ might sound as if they don’t really belong together, but it will become more obvious in a bit how they are connected.

What is the evidence-based policing matrix?
What is the evidence-based policing matrix? And how do you use the EBP matrix?
It is an online tool that has been developed to help police decision-makers make sense of the current
research that is out there. Hopefully you’ve seen in the ‘What is Evidence-Based Policing’ video what EBP is and why we need it to become more and more a part of policing, and you may also know that it is not always easy to make sense of all the research, or you might not even be able to access any academic works. Watch the ‘How to read academic research?’ video if it might be useful to you. In essence, the evidence-based policing matrix is there to provide you with a single location where relevant policing research on interventions that have been tested is stored, and it also tells you whether the interventions it lists are effective or not. And they are all of at least moderate robustness. Quite neat, isn’t it? And it’s openly available to anyone who’s interested, just go to www.PolicingMatrix.org. It was put together by Drs Cynthia Lum, and Christopher Koper of George Mason University, with the assistance of Dr Cody Telep. It is updated annually with new research that has come out and it tells you a number of things about each study, including whether it worked, didn’t work or had mixed results, or whether it actually had a negative effect, as in backfired.

Analysing the future of policing - Nic Pole interview
My name's Nick and I'm a principal analyst at the College of Policing, and I suppose people might know me because in policing, when people think of 'analyst', they think of crime analyst or intelligence analyst or performance analyst. But I do a different type of analysis which is futures analysis. Which means I kind of analyse the future to try and inform and support present-day decision-making. So to think about issues that are kind of developing on the horizon. So for the longer-term five or ten years from now and what implications those things might have for, for policing - in the here and now. So how we might better prepare for them.
